New N7 Owner, a few Questions - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
Im a new Owner of a 2nd hand (but perfect) N7(JB v411) and Ive been reading around the forums and the web, Ive used Android phones for awhilw now, but never a tablet, so a few Questions:
- My N7 also suffers from the Screen lifting, which I followed the instructions, tightened all the screws, but it still creaks on the left side, is that ok, or should the screw tighten fix it?
.
- I also get the grey colour banding ONLY in settings, but everything else is black backgrounds and bright icons and menus, with no dead pixels anywhere.. does that mean my device is ok?
- Do I have to root and unlock N7 to get the 720p video. If I do unlock and root., can i still recieve OTA updates from ASUS/Google and any Nexus specific Apps on Market place as well as updates to Apps linked to my google account.
- Because my device was 2nd hand, I wanted to do a Factory Reset > Cache Wipe> Dalvik Cache through recovery, but all I get (Vol Up, V Dwn, PWR) is a big Start icon, android on its back and tiny text in the corner, but no recovery menu, so is it possible to still get to it, or can I d/l a 3rd party recovery mode without rooting or unlocking, so i can get my $25 and my transformers movie. OR is factory Reset in Settings, good enough.
Any advice
Night

As anew Nexus 7 owner, I share these questions as well.
Can anybody reply ?
Specially, I'd like to root my N7 but shall I receive OTA updates then ? If not, how can I receive OTA after rooting ? (any method to un-root ?)
Btw, do we still have no kernel that supports OTG USB for USB flash memory ?
thx.

Rooting it's not going to block ota updates. You'll have to root every time you update.
Factory reset can be done in settings

Just my opinion but don't root your n7. I've seen too many problems with people trying to root and screwing up their devices. I think you have to have root to use the 720p recording but think about it can you really record quality video without being able to see the screen? Currently you have the most up to date device so putting a new ROM or kernel won't put you ahead. Anytime you root and change roms's or kernels there's always drawbacks (ergo force closes). This is just my opinion. As of now no apps or games require anything above the hardware we have so why over clock a CPU or GPU???

kieso,
I've been an Android phone & tablet user for last 2,5 years. It's quite a long time. N7 is my second tablet and 5th Android device.
I've always used my Android devices with root. Because atleast for cifs, ntfs and vpn access I require a custom kernel/ROM.
Rooting does not mean using custom ROM/kernel. So it's not something to be afraid of, as you seem to be.
Now, back to our original questions:
- What is the best way of rooting/unrooting Nexus 7 ?
- Do we have a method to support USB OTG for USB disks ? (what about NTFS ?)

Is used N7 Toolkit to unlock/root/... my N7, its easy to use so you may check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
For USB OTG support you may check out media nexus importer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer&hl=de)
A Friend told me CM10 also supports USB OTG, but I haven't tried it.

For 720p video, see this short article:

Nexus 7 is my first tablet and first android device. I rooted using wugfresh's tool, which worked fine for me.

If you choose to root, do it sooner rather than later. You need to "unlock" before you "root", and unlocking resets some of your settings. Not a big deal, just more of a PITA to redo all your personalizations. I'm glad I rooted and just got it over with. Now I never have to worry about not being able to use an app. If you are interested in customizing and adding lots of apps, sooner or later you're likely to hit a barrier where you need root. Read the many guides on here, you'll find the rooting the nexus 7 is relatively easy compared to most devices, and perhaps not as scary as it might sound at first.

nexus 7
I think biggest bonus to unlock and root nexus 7 is you can buy otg cable google it and then use usb drive for extra storage with app called stick mount free on the playstore. I had 8 gig model i could use my 32 gb flash drive giving me 37 gb of storage as apposed to 5 gig of storage.

Cool app for those who aren't rooted. If you are rooted, also check out StickMount on the google play store.

I've rooted using the Toolkit v2.0.0
it's easy...
now I'm looking for a kernel with CIFS support as the stock kernel does not support CIFS.
any recommendations?

seems like Faux's kernel at following thread supports USB OTG natively without any 3rd party app:

As always if you have to ask then the answer is no .
You root when apps or mods require root only .
Root voids warranty ..
This is not the Tab forum do not use any firmware or mods from here on a Tab .
Do I need stock recovery to get OTA
Yes stock and original with no root for OTA .

If you are happy with your Note, than it's not necessary.
I rooted mine, because it was still on 4.0.3, and that is the reason for the many bad reviews on the internet.
After upgrading to 4.1.2, it was like a whole new tablet.

So that I will try and root but BTW just asking is HighXXXXXXXX CMW Recovery good or Darkman Recovery Good ?
TWRP is only for stock rom right ?
There are many benefits to root. All the flashable files here require it.
But technically you will void your warranty.
However there are ways to get back to stock and "unroot" so mostly no one will know the difference if you have to return it.
Both recoveries are good, but HighOnAndroid supported a couple ROMs that Darkman didn't, though I'm not sure this is still the case

You will need to flash the HighXXXXXXXX CMW in ODIN to get root and cwm. You can then flash either darkman recovery with CWM, TWRP recovery or stay as is..
TWRP recovery isa modified recovery like the other 2 and requires root to use. If you look around you'll find the stock recovery too.
I root my tab with Darkman Recorvey is easy then I tot . Thx you guys .

Yes! Rooting is the way to go. There are ways around the warranty issues.
My main reason for rooting is for these essential apps:
Titanium Backup
Ad Blocker
Mobile ODIN
Triangle Away
ROM Toolbox Pro
and many more apps that have useful extended capabilities once rooted.
Some Con's of rooting
1) good mobile app no longer works after rooting.
So if u use good mobile for checking corporate emails, rooting device will break this.
2) there will be some overhead for you to upgrade device when any new firmwares are released. If u are a very busy professional, then this is an overhead you can live without.
3) there are and there always will be chances that you may brick your device.
4) I think u legaly void warranty on device by unlocking it. (I am assuming u want to root to load different firmware)
I am not discouraging.. just givin you other side of the coin.

Sorry to bump a three month old thread, but would anyone know whether the Lotus Traveler app used for syncing corporate email and calendar works after rooting? Good is trash, so I'm not surprised it wouldn't work. There's not much of a downside finding out for myself by rooting my Note 10.1 because I intend to keep flying stock on my Note 2; but I thought someone might save me the time and trouble.

For Lotus Traveler - I have no idea. I am unlucky enough to have Lotus Domino for our corporate e-mail and I hate it with a passion.
I have installed and configured Aqua Mail to connect to our Domino server (IMAP) and I can confirm that it works perfectly after rooting. You just need your IT guys to ensure that you have web access enabled. I set mine to check for mail every 15 minutes, if it's more urgent than that then why is it an email anyway.
Rom Noob tips, from a noob, please feel free to correct, add or expand on any points
General rooting options
Titbits
- rooting under normal circumstances shouldnt slow your system, in fact most devs i believe will attempt to make their roms bring out the best performance from that particular tab/phone you may own, throught software optimizations, in cojunction with working as best as it can with your specific hardware, although, sometimes you may have a N8013(american wifi version), the dev may have the n8000(3g version).......n810 is the european wifi version...................weve been mixing and matching rom versions here, i.e. using a n8000 rom on a n8010 hardware, ive done it, as far as i know, no adverse effects, well at least no obvious signs of em
- Usually, the process of flashing a rom will first involve rooting your tablet, and then flashing a recovery, which replaces the official one that may already be on your tab, the official one is usually pretty limited in what you can do, the custom RECOVERY is flashed because it gives you these options, but not limited
-factory reset
used when, flashing new rom, best to use the recovery when ever you wanna factory reset, i dont know if this was a oje of, or just specific to my situation, but ive used the android factory reset on my tf201 asus prime, after having rooted, custom recovery and been running a custom rom for some time, and it soft brick, since thats happenened ive been shy to do it on any android device, which is cool, as the custom recovery is a beatiful thing.......maybe someone can expand on or correct that suspicion
- wipes
cache- wipe your app cache
Davlik - someone gonna have to chime in there
factory/data reset- brings back your android back to its original state, wipes your data, that means, all apps installed, all settings changed
format - allows you to format the different seperate sections of your android rom, example of the different sections would be......kernel, os, sd hardrive ........
nandroid - the best part of a custom recovery in my opinion, the ability to completely back up your rom, settings, apps, homescreens, widgets......essentially, restoring your android EXACTLY where you left off, the few seconds before, it takes to boot into recovery and start the backup procedure..........you can also backup and restore only certain sections of your rom, so you may decide to back up just the kernel, or you may decide to restore, JUST the kernel from a FULL previous backup (that is, all sections backed up, minus, the sd hardrive,
Unless you specifically FORMAT the sd card, it usually wont be touched......id advice caution and reading up, before making a decision to format sd harddrive, with a custom RECOVERY, that may not know the requirements to your android device, i.e. a custom kernel ported from another android device from another company....plus, formatting sd harddrive is not really a thing done all the time, not unless you are thinking about starting from scratch, i mean, REALLY fresh, disclaimer:this would wipe any files you have stored on your android devices, specifically, documents, pics, vids so on so forth
- stock rom
the original android OS shipped with the device
- stock based rom
tweaked stock rom, speed, battery other mods
-CM (CynogenMod)
third party rom, built from the ground up, kinda....there are other different flavors of third party roms, CM is one of them
-when flashing a new rom, it is strongly advised by most devs to wipe cache/davlick and factory reset....before flashing, this helps avoid any conflicts with the previous rom and the new rom......at this point, if you were to reboot, rather then flash the rom, you would have essentially reset the rom to its original state, that means re-entering your wifi, changing settings, installing apps, generally a pain in the ass, if you find your self having to do it to many times in a short period.....titanium backup(root) is your friend, does a good job at backing up your apps and wifi.....havent figured out how to backup the settings i change in the android setting
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
-quick boot
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot
This free app, is a life saver when your new rom doesnt give you the option to reboot into your recovery, sometime found in hold power button/restart/recovery.......just more quicker then the manual way......especially when your having to google up the hardware method because you've not done it in a while and forgotten......which i believe is power off/hold volume down key/then press hold power button/wait for samsung logo/then let go of all buttons and reapettedly press volume up key untill the recovery shows up.......if you end up in DOWNLOAD mode, hold power to switch off, and repeat the process, changing the volume key, its one or the other, one takes you to the recovery, the other to download mode......so just reverse the volume keys, same method, just up instead of down
- supersu/superuser
installable app, that hands out root permission to apps that ask for root, if you dont expresly give persmision, using a supersu app, the app asking for root permission most likely will not work.... .....this app is installed as part of the rooting process
- afwall+ (free)
third party wifi/3g firewall, requires root........allows you to control what apps are able to use your wif/3g......i think its a passive firwall, as in, it uses very little of your resources, in the way it operates
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.ukanth.ufirewall
- rom flashing
sometimes, if you have already flashed a custom rom, and the dev has released the next version of his custom rom, as long as no drastic changes have been made between the two versions, you are able to flash the new version over the old version, keeping all your settings/apps/homescreen/widgets.......although a cache and davlik wipe is usually suggested if doing so
ive forgotten half of what i was originally going to write, so ill just leave it there before i rack my brains .......goodluck whatever you decide
Yes :good:
if it was me?
yea i would do it. it brings life to an old tablet. the 80XX tablets were abandoned by samsung. there are custom roms for Oreo the latest Android OS for N8000. i have a 8020 but no custom roms at the moment.
Good been waiting a whole 5 years for a reply .

[Q] can i connect nexus 4 to devices as DOK?

Hi guys ,
i just purchase a nexus 4 and i have a question about it.
if i want my nexus 4 "behave" like disc-on-key,
it is possible ?
I want to connect it to my xtreamer and play movies from my nexus storage , or to connect to my usb stereo in my car and play
music...
Of course i have OTG cable...
I supposed I need to ROOT my device... but i am willing to do that (another question - can i update android version after I root my device?)
thanks guys.

Hi someone can help me?

If your device supports MTP then yes, it will work.
However, you cannot use the Nexus 4 storage like a regular USB drive. The memory isn`t "mounted" that way and there is no way to do so.
Unless you can somehow partition the internal memory and then remove the MTP function. Which nobody has done...
So, in summary, if your device supports MTP or even PTP then yes it will work. If it needs a proper USB thumb-drive / hard drive / key, then you are out of luck my friend.
Sorry!
EDIT: To your second question, yes you can update after you root. Unlock the bootloader and flash away some different ROMs with additional features to the stock software. It`s why you bought a Nexus right?
thanks man!

Well, if you used a custom rom, just flash back to stock and go into settings/infos about phone/check for updates, and use the OTA update.
I guess. I've never made it before, since it's my first nexus, and I had it shipped with 4.2.2 :/
However, that is how I will do to update.

[Q] Please help this super noob mama, to not ruin Christmas!

I'm the "tech mama" in a family of iphone/pod users. Our youngest (7 year old) is getting the first tablet in the household for Christmas, but due to finances an iPad was out of the question. Also, I liked the idea of having at least one android device to see what we're missing After some research I decided on the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0, as it seems to be the best in our price range (for light games, watching video and ebooks), and the Kids Mode is also extremely useful. Unfortunately, I realized too late that KitKat makes the 32GB card I got useless for installing apps, which is about 90% of his usage, and the internal memory filled up DANG fast when I started setting it up and getting it "ready to play".
After more research, I know that I need to root it, which has been an issue on the 7.0. I know that I want to use Odin, as it's the safest, and is un-rootable for warranty purposes. And the last thing I want to do is brick it before he even unwraps it. I found this set of instructions, which seems to be accepted as safe and effective (at least for our T230NU with 4.4.2). http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-4/general/root-galaxy-tab-4-7-t230-t2835264 But this noob is still lost... I am a relatively tech savvy person, who can figure out any average user, and some above average things on a PC, but when it comes to mobile, I'm totally out of my realm. I flirted with the idea of jailbreaking a couple of times, but never bit the bullet. And when I read these simple instructions, I still have no clue how to flash, how NOT to boot to Android, and how to reboot to TWRP directly from download mode. Both tablets in general and all things Android are totally new to me and I literally can't afford to screw this up...
So I guess my questions are... is this really the best root for what we have? Is it safe and extremely unlikely to leave me with a brick? And does anyone have any, even more basic, foolproof (not that I'm a fool, lol), instructions to walk me through this before Christmas?
anjii,
hi,
the basics of odin flashing your samsung tab
download and install samsung usb drivers - http://d-h.st/jphS , click download now
download odin and extract to wherever - as per thread you cited
return to the thread you cited and follow instructions.
your device, button combos, force booting to...
odin mode,
use the three button combo to put you samsung tab into odin mode -
usually - hold down home,vol-down, and then power, wait for odin screen on tab to appear
let go of buttons, odin screen will tell you to what button to press to cancel or proceed
recovery mode,
home, vol-up, and power, when screen appears let go of power
to force reboot to recovery from odin as per the thread you cited, after your business with odin is done,
disconnect you tab while still in odin mode and use the three button combo for recovery boot.

Anji, hey, there is an app on google play that is called sdcard fix that actually let's you read and write to your sdcard again. It only works thru root though from needing us permissions. I had to find it to be able to play my music from my external card and it worked like a charm as I could install apps to external also. Hope this helps to get your present fixed!

Well, I put it off until now and have just been living with the internal memory, because I'm terrified to mess it up. I found another guide that filled in some of the basic gaps for me, that I didn't know how to get from one step to the next, and I successfully flashed it through Odin and got the green PASS to show up. Then I put it into recovery mode, but now I'm stuck at step 5 in the tutorial I linked to in my OP. The options I have onscreen are:
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset (Obviously not what I want)
wipe cache partition (Also not what I want right now, but for future reference, is this a useful tool (ie. does it just clear your cache?) Or a potentially damaging one (ie. changing partitions)?)
apply update from cache
I don't think any of the update options make sense, as I'm not updating the firmware or anything. But I don't know what to do... these are the instructions I need help figuring out.
5.) reboot device to TWRP directly from download mode. TWRP will detect that tablet is not rooted and ask if you want to intalls root. Slide to Install
6.) find SuperSU installer, follow instruction to install.
Scratch that... I figured out something I did wrong and re-did with with Auto Reboot unchecked. Now I am in TWRP on my tablet, but this "TWRP will detect that tablet is not rooted and ask if you want to intalls root. Slide to Install" did not happen. I have 8 big buttons to choose from, and am thinking the INSTALL button in the upper left corner is the one I need to use, and from there I found TWRP in the folders, and my bar now says "/sdcard/TWRP" and at the top it says "Select Zip to Install" and I have Internal Storage selected (I assume installing it onto the external card wouldn't root the tablet). But I can't figure out how to continue.
Okay, I kept experimenting and figured it out. I am now rooted and have verified it with a root checker app... woohoo!!!! My last question is now, what's the best method/app for installing/moving apps off the internal memory and onto my card, AND is there a way to set things up so that new apps and media will automatically install to the external card.

Hi! Well I dont not know really how to fully install apps onto sd cards. Umm what I do is when ever I download like a big gaming app, I use foldermount or link2sd to transfer the data files over which would make the app take up less space. (theres a video on youtube on how to use foldermount). Hope this helps!
on google play get SDCardfix.apk it allows kitkat to read/write to the external sd card as kk has a code that normally prevents this from happening. once you do that you can use link2sd or get romtoolbox and use its built in apps2sd setting to select it. now mind the fact this only works for apps you install AFTER you set it up and it may not work for all. as for that use either ti-backup or the romtoolbox as both allow you to backup apps and freeze/move/uninstall all apps. hope it sets you on a good path anjii!

Thinking of Rooting the wife's old N7, suggestions and guidance needed.

OK, got the wife a new tablet as she could not deal with how slow her N 7 first edition had become, even after numerous FR.
So with that being said, I was going to sell this device, as I really didn't need it, but for $50 it's not worth selling, so I am thinking about rooting it to see if I can speed it up a little and use it as a back up, when ever needed. I heard about Towelroot, is it safe, or is there a better and safer way ?
1) Best way to root
2) Will rooting it make it at least usable, it's so slow now
3) What Roms do you recommend.
you can use the nexus root toolkit, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475 ....to install twrp , wipe the device and then install another ROM like one of those in this forum. It's not really the fact that you will root the device that will make it faster, it's more a matter of installing a new Rom and clearing all the garbage on the tablet. ( cache and davlik cache) . Reinstall a small Rom and not too many apps to let more memory for the device to work properly is the trick . You can flash one of those roms based on 5.1.1 lollipop like "dirty unicorn". There are no bad Roms in this forum, so it's a matter of choice...I'm not sure that your wife need any apps that will need Root. Many Roms have the options of being superuser, which is almost the same. You will have to learn how to get into the developer mode , on the tablet's options, to activate the usb debugging so that you can flash TWRP and use any program that can be used to flash a new rom. The nexus root toolkit has a good guide to help you start with it. Once TWRP is installed, I like to use a OTG cable and a flash drive to install any new Rom from TWRP itself. I find it faster and easier to use than the toolkit. TWRP will remain on the tablet so you can try a few Roms and choose the one you like. After installing a ROM , you need to install a Gapp to access the google store. Choose a small size gapps ( 80 megs or so) because the nexus 7 doesn't have the memory to flash a large gapp. Good luck and happy flashing.
Thanks I will definitely check it out, cheers

Beginner's questions - Which ROM how to flush

Hi,
I've been reading for some hours and did not want to bother you with one more beginner's question but I prefer to ask before rather than pulling my hair off and discovering that I did something wrong. Here are my questions.
I have a Nexus 7 2012 Wifi with android v5.1.1 running on it, extremely slow.
1)To flush a new ROM I saw one movie on youtube that was using the android default bootloader, but here on the forum I read (and later learned what it means) about TWRP. Do I need to first install TWRP on my Nexus 7? can you please help me with a link to a tutorial or even better to a youtube movie on how to install it.
2) I remember a long time ago I flushed the v5 ROM by using an OTG USB Cable, I can't use an normal cable right?
3) Which ROM to choose. I'm not that picky, I guess any would be better than the current one. I read that v7 is pretty good, but there are too many ROMs and I got lost in the acronyms. I need a ROM that will run as fast as possible (at least decently). I do not need any google aps, but I read somewhere that sometimes if you choose a ROM without the gapps (I guess this is the acronym used right) then you do not get even the Google Play. I need Google play to install Chrome and a few applications for my son. (to learn a second language: Duolingo)
More than I do not need. It would be good if the battery would last longer, but it's not a problem if I need to charge it every now and then.
I learned that the ROM that I need is called grouper (wifi only).
4) OTA means over the air. Now I guess that all the rooms for android v7 are unofficial ROMs (meaning not provided by google, sorry if I got it wrong). In this case, does the OTA refers to the security patches provided by Google to patch their OS? or does it refer to the installation of a new ROM without the USB cable, directly from the internal memory
5) I do not care about the internal data, I can delete it all, but I did a factory reset of a Samsung Galaxy A10 (a more recent tablet) and I regretted it dearly, because I had forgotten the username and password that I created when I first used the device, and then I had to take it to an official Samsung repair shop to have it fixed, as it couldn't be used without the original account (username and password). I guess this is not the case for older versions. I can of course check my current Google account that I created while using this tablet for the first time. I checked the Users on the tablet, and I can't really find a Google account, but just a local account. In any case, could anyone of you confirm that if I clean all the data it shouldn't be a problem to install a new ROM afterwards.
Many thanks for your time and efforts in answering the above questions, but also to develop new cool great amazing ROMs that bring old devices back to life.
I think the easiest way to go is using Nexus Root Toolkit and Pure Nexus MM rom. Using NRT is pretty easy as long as driver works. It'll unlock bootloader and install TWRP. After installing rom install Parrot Mod and tablet will be reasonably quick way faster than stock lollipop. Thats what I have and it's still usable.

Hi,
I guess I should be doing something similar with this tutorial (ok the NRT version is newer now).

And then flush the custom ROM that you were talking about the Pure Nexus MM Rom, which is not in the above video.
Do I need an OTG USB cable for that? I need to be careful and test first as the USB port connection was phisicaly tricky (I need to ensure the connection and then do not touch the USB cable anymore so that it does not disconnect). I think if I'm very careful it should be working eventually.
Many thanks
Any USB cable that allows computer to recognize Nexus 7 as a device is ok. Before doing anything make sure that full driver test is successful. Next is OEM unlock which will wipe the device, then TWRP flash and root. Then flash stock from NRT and boot.
Next download PN MM rom, copy to some directory on Nexus 7, boot into TWRP, install, boot. Repeat same with Parrot Mod (flash from TWRP). After that tablet will be usable. ROM build that I have is MTC19Z

Hey guys listen up, your gonna love this! I have a grouper too and i have it using 7.1.2 tried your methods and ended up here, its incredible if you can do these things :
1) Change your data and cache to f2fs which wipes your internal storage.
2) Install crdroid ROM from this week with june kernel.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7/development/rom-crdroidv3-8-3-nexus-7-2012-t3710834
3) DO NOT install GAPPs (for ultimate otherwise pico I guess but this beast is old and tired we are trying for ultimate efficiency.)
Ohh and use NRT 2.1.9 to install your select couple of apk's thats it for performance.
4) Despite all warnings try ParrotMod it works for me.
Literally many times faster than PureNexus..
