Who thinks Dev Edition will sell well? - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wondering if anyone thinks sales will be "decent" by sales numbers go for the dev edition?

I preordered mine the other day, but I sincerely doubt sales of the dev edition will be a significant percentage of overall sales for this phone.
We'll see...hope I am wrong.

I doubt it will, especially if someone figures out how to unlock the bootloader of the regular one.

Ugh no.

Unpossible... remember the German RAZR Developers Edition?

I haven't been interested in a RAZR before this one, so I don't know about the German one. What happened?

Nothing.. That's what I was trying to say. The Developers Edition can be unlocked, the other versions can't.

But we will still be able to gain root access on the regular version yes?

I don't think it will sell well at all. If they would simply allow it subsidized with no warranty coverage, then it would do much better.

Since a lot of us have unlimited plans we want to keep, we'll be paying full price for phone upgrades anyway. If I have to pay full price I'll just get the developer's edition even if it is a few dollars more.

Ditto. I'm getting the regular one for the wife but when it's my turn I either loose unlimited data or pay full price. If I'm paying through the nose anyway what's the extra few bucks.

I really think that an open unlock bootloader program more similar to what HTC has is going to be what helps the development community move forward, not through selling a developer edition at full cost. The reality of the situation is that Motorola (especially now that they're owned by Google) probably isn't against an open bootloader unlock program, but they don't have as much on the bargaining table compared to say Verizon who is has always been very against the idea of unlocking and really controls the way the phone is customized for the carrier.
I'm not knowledgeable on the current RAZR and RAZR MAXX unlocking process, but I think if that community works on the RAZR M and HD, maybe down the line sometime they could find some sort of solution for at least root. Maybe that's being too optimistic though.

I ordered the developer edition today. Has anyone who also ordered had it shipped yet? Says not until the 24th, but before that it said the 13th. So I figured it could be sooner.
I hope this sells well, but just how many people are willing to pay that much. I don't have an upgrade, so I had to pay full price anyway, and I had a promo code that made it a little less than 549. Worth it to me, especially to have it unlocked.

Free xperia play at google io !

The giveaway took place in the C++/Game Developer panel, which discussed the use of native code in Android applications (games, in particular, are likely to use the NDK as opposed to standard Dalvik). And aside from winning some karma points from developers, Sony’s motivation for handing out the phones are pretty clear: give developers a phone that features the gamepad, and they’re much more likely to make sure their games work flawlessly with it.

Does anyone know if these are carrier unlocked and able to connect to Fastboot? I'm seeing a few popping up on eBay in the $500-$600 range and I think I'm going to take the plunge.
If they're from Sony then they're most likely unlocked phones. I can't imagine them going "here, have a phone, it only works on -network- though"
Thanks. That's what I was thinking.

However, still kind of bummed devs aren't taking this seriously...

Excuse me for my ignorant question but is it correct to assume that even though these Google I/O Xperia Play's are unlocked that it's only for SIM and you would still need to use Gingerbreak to get root access right?
I'm asking because I'm in the process of buying one so I want to know how much I need to tinker with it. I also assume I won't need to debrand it and that it is pretty stock no?

From what i could tell on eBay there were a couple CDMA phones.
As well the GSM ones all appear to be the exact same phone as the Canadian one R800a just unbranded so i'd guess root access would have to be done via gingerbreak, however as mine arrives monday i'll update if this is the case.

Lucky you, i ended up at $540 as my timing sux.
Awesome phone at crazy price. I also got the dock and it looks very good.
I got it on ebay for $450 (item number 120725728032) and add a 10% back in ebay bucks as I bought it before the IE9 + Window 7 8% bonus ebay bucks ended. Very sweet deal at $405 + $7 for almost overnight shipping. I think the seller didn't care for much profit and also he didn't mention R800a prominently to get attention.
It's not much thicker than X10 and is actually a little shorter. The four buttons it has should have been on Arc along with the front camera. Will be using it for a week or two before I pass it on to my son while I go back to my Arc.
I have one of these coming tomorrow (ebay, ~$500 shipped). Is there any difference in software compared to the Verizon model? Is it going to be primarily stock 2.3?
This may sound like a foolish question, but, considering these aren't widely available, does everyone think these will get proper updates from SE?
Has anyone gotten the verizon version of one of these phones? I was thinking about grabbing one on ebay before they disappear to use on my verizon account, but wanted to check ahead of time to see if the bootloader on the developer version would be unlockable. Can anyone confirm this?

Ordered the T-Mobile version!

I ordered the T-Mobile version earlier today, FINALLY. Not sure if I should have waited for the DEV edition, but the T-Mobile version comes with an unlockable bootloader so I guess that's good. If the DEV edition becomes available later this week I will simply return the tmo version and get that.
Anyone else order the T-Mobile Moto X?
UPDATE: Our Moto X's have started shipping, although the moto site still does not reflect it. Showing a delivery date of 9/16 (Monday)!

Might wait for the Dev. Edition and/or Motomaker edition, the appealing thing about the Moto X is the possibility of the 32gb internal storage and you won't get that with the carrier version.
Do we know if the Dev edition will come with T Mobiles AWS HSPA? If so, that is what I'm going to wait for.

It probably won't. The T-Mobile version does though, and is fully unlockable... so I'd go with that one.
Almost bit the bullet and bought one of these. Can't justify dropping 600 bucks for 16gb and from most accounts a poor camera and average screen. I really wanted to love the phone, but in my limited time in playing with one, I just don't feel it's a 600 dollar product. Motorola pays 220 dollars to have the phone made, they would have taken over the world if they didn't try to get 3x the price out of customers.

Thanks for wishing me luck, it worked. I bought a LG G2 for 600 dollars. Problem solved. I appreciate the luck! :good: 32GB, 1080P screen, Great camera with OIS, for the same price. It wasn't the fact that phones cost 600 dollars, its the fact that Motorola is charging 600 dollars for that phone. Its not a 600 dollar piece of hardware. Anyway, I'm good to go now, back to my regularly scheduled G2 forums. Best of luck X guys! Its really a cool and unique phone.

You're welcome
And congrats!
I tried to order one several times yesterday. I had it the basket every time and when I clicked the purchase button I kept getting a message about an error with my credit card which has plenty of money on it. Now I have three holds pending on my credit card in the amount of the purchase and they all say Motorola Direct. First chat session was cut off and second one was with a person saying the only moto x available for purchase was the att exclusive one. I told them they had bad information and they insisted I was wrong. I made a call about it and have had two call backs today but each time I was busy. Hoping for another call back today because I'm not going to sit on hold for another 20 minutes today to see what they have come up with. They did admit that the website has a problem but without more info I am in the dark still I'm losing my faith in this company and it sucks because I want to try this phone and give them a chance but it is frustrating so far. I know its early in the game for the T-Mobile variant but damn, its not looking good so far.

I don't believe that matters seeing as the price drop was on the off contract option for the AT&T branded Moto X as well as the contracted options. Now whether or not the Moto Maker will have an option for the T-Mobile payment plan feature is the real question.

I have had a T-mobile MotoMaker Moto X from the past week now, and thought I'd chime in to help answer any questions any of you may have. For starters, Yes, you have the option to choose from all the currently available color combos and accents, and the choice between 16gb and 32gb, to the best of my knowledge. The wood backs are coming soon. Price should be taking a $100 cut as well, similar to AT&T and Verizon. And I can also confirm that like the standard woven black and white T-mobile Moto X you can buy right now through Motorola, the MotoMaker ones will also be devoid of any branding and unlocked out of the box. Will post some pictures of mine when I get a chance. I have the lemon lime with silver accents and black front, 16GB
Let me know if you have any questions that you need answers for, I will try my best to answer them.

I don't think these come with a manufacturer's warranty but idk for sure. It's a great price for a great phone!! I actually like the white woven back/black front combo a lot.
Just search for Verizon Moto X on ebay and you will find the listing. N/A. Last night there were only about 500 sold but tonight over 1600 sold! I don't know how many the guy has to sell.
Also check your email for an email from paypal for a $50 statement credit if you sign up for paypal credit. Not everyone gets the offer, but it came around the end of November. If you sign up and then buy the phone on credit, you will get a $50 statement credit! Do be aware, it seems most of these are from the September 2014 batch that left the factory with incorrect programming (seems the CID is set wrong) and the boot loader unlock site will tell you that the phone cannot be unlocked.
Your going to need to go to this: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/f2061da875?page=1 thread and read the section of the OP in red letters if that is the case. It provides an email address you can email your information to get the unlock code.
Motorola IS unlocking these phones however, and having read through that thread multiple people have inquired about warranty and been told its being honored...
Still a good deal, I have been happy with my phone... but it took about 5 days to get it unlocked and a bit of digging around to figure it all out. Now that Motorola has been dealing with the issue, and you already know about it it should be a lot quicker to get your code. I got in RIGHT after then stopped having you PM oliver on the forum, right before they started trying to figure out how to handle us all.

If you're on Verizon and are looking for a smaller phone that can be rooted/boatloader unlocked, get this. Root exploits are likely going to be harder to come by after 5.0. With this phone you don't have to worry about root exploits being closed with an OTA.

It'll be a nice jump up from the S3. I'm back on the 2013 version after trying both the droid turbo and moto x 2014. It's a great little phone!
I purchased a new Moto X Verizon Dev Ed from one of the cheaper sellers on Amazon. As expected it was part of the Sept. 2014 batch of phones. I used the links provided on the first page and had my code from Motorola in less than 12hrs and had Lollipop installed not much longer after that.
Very happy with the purchase, don't be scared by the Sept 2014 batch of phones the process is simple (if you can unlock the boot, you have the abilities) and quick.

I ordered the Moto X Developer Edition that will work with Verizon Wireless on Amazon yesterday. I can hardly wait to get in my hands so I can play with it and get everything from my Samsung Galaxy S3 transferred over to it. Looks like it will be one that I will definitely be very happy with. I've had Motorola cell phones and smartphones in the past and they have never let me down.

I just went to that last December from the S3 to the Moto X (1st gen). Love it, love it, love it. NO LAGS!!!! It's been seamless and smooth. Battery life is excellent. I get almost a day and a half if I'm not playing Diamond Digger (the makers of Candy Crush). I love the notification without having to open it up (have a pin code). I have it paired with my Bluetooth stereo in my Honda which plays music off the phone. It even reads back to me whenever I get a text message and gives me the option to respond (and this while driving ). I'm still trying to get use to using Google Now commands so I can do things more hands free.

I got mine almost three weeks ago and I'm really loving how this one works. I also find that my phone really doesn't lag like the S3 did. The cell phone signal is also a lot better on this phone. I really notice it when I'm at work.

I haven't been able to get Lollipop on my phone without going to a custom ROM. How did you get Lollipop on your phone?

Pixel C 25% Off For Developers!

Google is offering a 25% discount off the Pixel C for developers. You can read about it here, and sign up for it here.
I signed up and got a code several hours afterwards.
Give it a shot...

I'm not gonna lie, as a day 1 adopter, this kind of breaks my balls. Those of us here who dealt with problems with the touchscreen and wifi since release should be receiving this "developer" discount, as we were the ones that were basically beta testing this for Google. I feel somewhat betrayed for this, but I am also glad at the same time, as this should increase the adoption rate of what has turned out to be an amazing tablet.
Sadly this is only for the USA. Too bad for the rest of us

Damn, that's a proper kick to the family jewels...
I bought the Pixel C two weeks ago. I called and got an RMA and ordered it again. Saved me $150.
Nexus products always go on sale a few months after release. If you want a brand new Nexus when it first comes out, you pay a premium. This is the case with most electronics anyways.
I'm getting my Pixel C delivered Tuesday
I really want to buy it.. but every single tablet I have bought I rarely use them (nexus 7 1st and 2nd gen, lg g pad)
I'm not sure if the Pixel C would be any different.. decisions decisions
To those of you who've received the discount: how do they decide whether or not you're a developer? And how long did it take for you to receive the code? I've written simple apps, but never published anything.

Don't think they did any checks I don't have a developer account with google (although I've done a few off playstore apps) I got mine within 30 minutes after submitting the request.

Thanks. Just got mine.
For reference: I don't live in the US, and my Google account is not registered there. I used a VPN to register for the code, and I plan to have it sent to relatives in the US and have them forward it to me.

I think you don't need a VPN. I got a code without it but can't use it I don't have any relative in the US so I can't buy it with the code. Still waiting that G extend the promotion...

i would think you would just need an u.s. address with someone who would forward it. personally, i think the developer for N preview thing is somewhat of a guise just to help boost sales without overtly offending those who spent full price on tablet. i have not seen google do a 25% off sale 90 days post release. The recent Christmas promotions did not go to 25% did they?
For info, it's also available for UK and for Ireland, Australia (and somewhere else I can't remember). I'm UK and received my code a few hours after application. There's no check, it's just an offer based around the fact this is a dev device like the Pixels. Unfortunately, el goog have moved away from low price offerings to the faithful (and early) adopter, especially abroad. The N6P went with $50 play credit in the US and nothing elsewhere. Part of me sees this Pixel C discount as some reparation to the lack of pre-order Nexus love.
Ramble over, apologies!
Any word if discount codes are still being sent out? I signed up for one today (Saturday), just curious if I should expect to get one still or not.

I took advantage of this deal and still feel like it is overpriced at $400 for the 32gb considering its being marketed to developers as a quasi nexus but then we are punished for unlocking the bootloader with 30 second warnings on start...
I'm building aosp for it right now hopefully I can get $400 worth of fun out of it somehow

Do you guys think, since the discount was expanded to UK, Australia and so on that there is a chance Google will expand it even further, to maybe other countries in europe?

It was extended only to English speaking countries so it seems unlikely to me
