I have a problem!! I'm stoked on Android, havn't had a phone in a very long time and now its time to get one! I'm trying to decide on which one to get... I've had my eyes on the Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 and was certain this is the perfect one...
however now i realize that it doesn't have the hspa 1700 band which is used by T-mobile, and I-wireless.. both of which offer a $50/month unlimited text/talk/web plan... and this is the carrier I'm going to choose, as AT&T is my only other choice, they charge $75/month for unlimted talk text, and 1gig of web! plus i used AT&T before i don't like em!
So then I look at the US version, has dual core instead of quad, which i hear isn't much of a difference right now.. and has 2gigs of ram.. which doesn't help much... AND has an inferior audio chip... which sucks because i plan on using this as my main mp3 player as well! Im quite the audiophile and planned on getting some vsonic earphones!
So then theres the Galaxy Nexus... MUCH cheaper... Has all the bands i need... Made from google... Not sure on the quality of audio chip but i think i read its not great... had quite a smaller screen, especially due to the software keys... AND has no MicroSD
So my question for you guys, since i havn't used a cell phone for like 4 years... Should i sacrifice the quad core and Wolfson audio chip for a 3g network? or is 2g decent speed? I'm assuming most of my net use i would be near a wifi anyways... and how much inferior is the audio quality on the US version?
I'm thinking the 2g network is prbly a decent speed now that its offloaded to the 3g and 4g bands...
So far I'm thinking im going to go with the International version and sacrifice internet speeds... I don't plan on youtubing/streaming/downloading lots of stuff when im away from a wifi anyhow, If anything just simple web browsing... and whatever Apps i get myself consumed iN! ><
Whats your guy's input and experience on this?? I registered just to know
Tmo are refarming their 1900mhz band to 3g in the next few months so you'll have 3g on tmo. Some places already have been switched over.

If i wireless use tmo's network then I'm guessing it'll be the same for them, although it wont be for a few months, its a work in progress.
The quote is from the TV show "The Wire" and the avatar is the Greek symbol "phi" (uppercase) and in mathematics it is the symbol for the golden ratio, which is all around us in nature and architecture. (Its the lowercase one technically but I like the uppercase one)

Ah, yea i was gona guess phi.. wasn't sure..
Well i hope so... I guess the Int version it is!! It should last me a long time then, as the quad core has yet to be fully utilized by the OS and Apps... My phone will get better over time
Another thing, I plan on using Cyanogen mod, I know because of the undocumented proprietary pins on the S3, i wont be able to use the MHL cable to link to my tv using cyanogen mod... Would cyanogen mod effect my wolfson audio chip in anyway? I'm hoping it would make it better but i skimmed over something about some voodoo audio thing that makes it worse?
I guess all i need to decide on now is which case i want, which screen protector is best... and Pebble blue orrr Pearl white... Im leanin towards blue
Ya the mhl thing is known, as for the sound, the cm team use am open source audio hal and the sound is just as good as stock (I think) and voodoo sound once it is released will be amazing, supercurio (voodoo dev) can work wonders with the Wolfson DAC.
You should try out stock Samsung ROMs for a while, they aren't that bad and the JB ones are nice and smooth and fast and have all of the Samsung extras.

Yea I plan on using the stock samsung rom for MAYBE a month... just to make sure i don't have a lemon... also want to test and see how well the stock rom works to choose for myself which is better. I just want to flash it asap though because i don't want all the bloat that comes with it... We'll see stoked.... I understand i risk the chance of bricking my phone, but once i get it unlocked and put clockwork recovery on it, can i do any damage from trying a bunch of different roms? as long as i make sure the rom is for the I9300?
Not really, if you follow the instructions then it'll be smooth sailing.
Flash the wrong firmware or something like that and there'll be trouble alright.
I came from the galaxy nexus to this and I loved aosp but for the last month or two I've been using touchwiz ROMs, I just delete all the bloat from it first.
They have usable ram up from 778mb to 833mb now in the JB leaks.
I'll be sticking with Sammy ROMs from now on.

I live in the Princeton, NJ area and already have TMobile 3g coverage in the 1900mhz band.
2G (edge) is terribly slow. I wouldn't recommend it.
You can also look into straight talk, which uses AT&T's bands and provides 3G. I think its like $45 for unlimited talk, text and 3G data. The unlimited data is capped at 5GB and then they throttle you down (or so I have heard). So why do they call it unlimited data then right? Right....

Hummingbird Chipset
My guess would be that the Samsung Hummingbird chipset only supports 7.2 Mbps. Same as with the GSM Galaxy S series handsets.
many reasons why it may not be there. but you still get up to 7.2Mbps down which is very good.
Whoa your totally the 1st person to notice this and post about it......
To me, it doesn't matter. I live in a HSPA+ area and have never even come close to getting 7.2Mbps on a G2. Let alone HSPA+ speeds.
How many networks actually support those speeds anyways ?? I mean in reality not on paper. Besides, 7Mbps is enough for all mobile needs, a youtube 720p HD video averages around 2Mbps which is the highest bandwidth consuming task I can think of. Unless you are planning to tether it to a laptop and download huge files, which IMO is not a requirement for many users, since mobile data is pretty expensive.

lol Anyways whats the big deal. 99% person of the world is not on 4G yet
I know we wanted everything from this phone but its not to be
I don't care since in my country we don't even have 4G so that would be completely useless.
But I understand entirely you're complaining about it, they're expected to make progress not regression(but that's technology, constructers choose what we will get...).
It's true "4G" isn't prominent right now. I'm guessing the disappointment comes when you try to see Nexus S as a phone into 2011, and beyond. Dropping $529 dollars for a phone that won't be taking advantage of "4G" speeds which all carriers are moving toward and pushing for, and which handsets are already featuring, doesn't seem future-proof, and maybe even a step back. It doesn't live up to the Nexus branding.
Agreed. I've decided to stay with my Samsung Epic (which has a bad ESN that I bought for $300 and I am using as an Android touch), and wait it out. When phones that come out that are compare to the Galaxy S as how the Nexus One overshadowed the Hero, I'll probably upgrade. Not then ... it's not worth selling my current phone.
I just want to make sure before I buy this phone that it will work on Simple Mobile at 3G speeds at the very least... HSPA+ maybe in the future?
I dont want to get it if it wont work since I dont want to be on slow EDGE for ATT and dont want to pay a premium if I am going to use TMOBILE service anyways.
Thanks.

Simple Mobile is intriguingly priced.
The Nexus One will never work on the HSPA+ network any faster than the regular HSPA network; the hardware isn't HSPA+ compatible.

Simple Mobile is a T-Mobile reseller so yes it will work.
Since it is a Tmobile phone it seems like 3G should be good.. how about HSPA+???
I know the Mytouch4G is good and the G2 but nowhere does it say on the NExus S it is HSPA+.... anyone know if that will work at the SUPER FASTER SPEEDS?

HSPA maxes out at 7.2mbs, HSPA+ at ~22mbs but the MT4G/G2 max at ~14.4mbs if i recall correctly.
On average, I see around 2.5mbs to 3.8mbs on my Nexus which was about the same as I was seeing on my MT4G oddly enough. The G2 was getting 4-8mbs

Yep, same here. My Nexus One barely pulled >1mbs. Everyone hails that phone as the greatest thing since sliced bread, and don't get me wrong it was pretty damn great, but it had several flaws too such as the poor 3G reception I'm citing here.
Simple mobile gets t-mobile speed. I am proof that this work. Everything works except 4g since nexus s doesn't have that but I get amazing 3g speed.

I would be happy with a consistent 3.0mb. within a span of 3 miles I can go from 5mb to less than 1mb and lots of areas still are edge
last time i did a speed test maxed out at 2.8 Mbps down on Wind Mobile
and it was even less on Rogers / Fido, so i'm very happy
So finally pulled the trigger... TRUE 3g speed on this phone. I couldn't be any happier.
Only problem is T-Mobile network isn't the largest so I have a lot of edge network areas. When 3g is running its pretty darn quick though.
All for 60 unlimited....

Thats awesome. I have been contemplating getting SIMple Mobile for use on my MT4G or G2, but, I have been thinking about getting a NS to use on SM.
Do any of the Visual Voicemail apps work on this (or any T-Mo phone) using SIMple Mobile? It is my understanding that any FlexPay or Pre-Paid providers cannot offer any type of Visual Voicemail services. I know, Google Voice would work ok, but I'm not happy with their UI, and other aspects of GV.
If any Visual Voicemail apps would work with SIMple Mobile, flawlessly, then I'm sold on both SM & NS.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Just figured I would give you guys thinking of moving to Simple a heads up. Their "unlimited" data is capped at 1GB. There have been reports of them shutting down your service once you reach this and charging you for prepaid data to continue use. Do your research before you jump especially if you like to tether or do a lot of streaming.

I've read the same thing on HowardForums. Since it's prepaid, you can pay for the service but they can disconnect the data anytime they want during that month.
I'm paying $55.99 a month on a non-contract basis right now, gives me 500 minutes and unlimited data. For SMS I simply use Google Voice which is free. I use it as my primary number instead of the T-Mobile one. I don't know my T-Mobile number even.
So for $60 a month, seems like Simple Mobile is more expensive and its very likely that Simple Mobile's contract for data is rather expensive hence why they cap at 1gb of data. I wouldn't expect you to ever be allowed to go past that given that MVNO's make much less profit overall.
I considered it, but quickly abandoned the plan. If it was actually cheaper (for me) I'd be willing to try it.

Woah 1GB data cap? Seems like a plan that would be good for parents, grandparents, or busy businesspeople who don't have the time/desire to do anything but light data use.
Glad you mentioned this, I was actually thinking of trying out the service.
You may want to read here. Might impact your decision.
Just wanted to let you know and give you the best possible buying decisions.
I can upgrade now, as it has been over a year, or I could wait till November till my contract ends. I think I'm gonna hold until my contract ends with Verizon, and switch to the best phone possible (Kal-EL anyone?) regardless of carrier (unless the carrier is notoriously terrible at service). After the codec issues with the Tegra2, I'm just waiting on Samsung's Exynos GPU (although that might change in the near future). 4G wont be avaliable anywhere I live anytime soon, so.....eh.
Edit: Sorry for the numerous amounts of side notes/parenthesis
3G won't be capped at all, will it? If it isn't, then I'm pretty sure 5GB will be enough for me per month with 4G. I'm pretty often in some place with wifi, and I don't watch many videos or download particularly large stuff directly to my phone, so I'm not gonna rush out and get a Thunderbolt now. I'm still waiting on Verizon's Galaxy S II before I make the switch to a new phone (or some comparable, non-Bionic dual-core phone).
EDIT: I did just realize that I won't be able to do any data intensive tethering on 4G, which sorta sucks, but I've been fine with 3G, so I'm not gonna suddenly start complaining now.

3G smartphone plans have always been and will always be unlimited. Yea they have a soft cap which they issue warnings and stuff, but I've never seen any, and members on here claim to use about 15-20 GB on 3G and never claim to have been bothered, so I'd say, yea, its pretty much unlimited.
Since it's now Friday and nothing seems to have happened (you would have seen a big fat announcement somewhere), let's file this under "debunked".

So I used and loved my Dell steak for a good year or so and I upgraded to an HTC vivid yesterday. The phone is fantastic, but I definitely miss the large screen. I gotta say, there's a lot of things that I find different about the vivid than in the Engadget review. Check out some of the comments in that thread. I spent well over an hour deciding which one I wanted. But this isn't about that. I think if the Note worked on AT&T's lte I would jump on the Note.
I'm a former Streak user and I've just upgraded to a Note. Loving it, although being a former Streak user means I'm not overwhelmed.
IMHO the Streak was a massively underestimated device, and sadly I think the Note may be heading the same way. And all because it's a bit big .
My first mobile (NEC P3) was humungously bigger than the Note and only had 4-line LCD display - the P3 was a real struggle to put in a jean pocket , the Note is definitely not and that's all that matters surely ? What is it with the "how it looks up to your ear" angst
The reason I upgraded to the Note is the increased performance, resolution, drawing/note taking ability and a better chance of getting decent and timely OS upgrades.
Can't help you with the connectivity questions (I'm in UK), but it seems a shame that in the US it's so hard to get these answers for you early adopters thinking of importing. Can't the US journos who review these things get the answers ?

Fantastic points of view! I miss my large screen quite a bit, but lte here in Dallas is incredible and worth taking the hit. I've been finding that reviewers are reporting speeds that people get with hspa+ here as lte speeds. I've been getting a consistent 35 to 45mbps download speeds. I find that incredibly strange. If the Note can access those kind of speeds here in Dallas, it would certainly be a dream device to say the least. And definitely worth the cash.
Something I did to really sell me on the device (I dont have it... yet) is I went to best buy and dinked around with the Galaxy Player 5. It is running 2.3, is huge and still rather thin, which is the closest simulation to the Note I can think of. The people looked at me weird when I was trying to slide it in my pocket, but it confirmed that a device that huge can still comfortably fit.
Just a warning... as has been said, if one goes that big, Im not sure how one could ever go smaller...
and btw... first post
I had the streak. The note is better in every way!!! 21 MBPS at a desktop resolution while on the web at 1200 x 800 is much better for me than 50 MBPS on a smaller, less resolution screen. I am on wi fi most of the time anyway.
It looks like it does support lte according to Engadget's review, but it's very vague...

LTE won't be coming to most areas till 2015 on At&t.
All LTE means is worse battery life, more bulk, and most likely a worse processor. Just look at the skyrocket.
There really is no need for LTE on phones either. HSPA+ allows me to stream 1080p without stopping.
If you want LTE go buy a SGS2 ****rocket.

Wasn't an angry reply. At&t hasn't even rolled out LTE in NY yet. It's about to be 2012 and AT&T only has LTE in about 8 cities, not including NYC. By the time AT&T covers all of the US at this rate, it will be about 2015 or '16. I don't understand how that's wrong info? Most of the US doesn't even have HSPA+ yet. I'm lucky to live in the small portion of HSPA+ area.
The ****rocket is heavier enough to notice a diff. when holding it in your hand against the og SGSII. It has a bulkier design and is choppy, again LTE is in about 8 cities.
How would I know where you live? I'm on the mobile version if you couldn't tell... Even if I was on the full site, I don't look to see where people live... that's just sketchy.
About your data usage and how it fits your "lifestyle". Unless you're illegally downloading movies, games, or other copyrighted files, there really is no point in having LTE. My home wifi sucks so I use my phone to download things occasionally, HSPA+ works fine and is fast enough and I watch netflix, download apps, and youtube vids on my unlim. data plan. LTE is also kind of pointless unless you have unlimited data as well.
Anyway before you start calling people idiots, use your head. LTE has been around for a long time now with VZW. It took them about 4 years to roll out their LTE network and it still doesn't give coverage to everyone. Now, since I'm "idiotic", correct my math... 2011+4=2015.

My location is right there under my screen name. Again, you don't know what my lifestyle is like and I'll tell you now, it has nothing to do with illegal downloads. more about streaming from my cloud via pogo plug. Next, you clearly have a problem with reading things thoroughly as I clearly wrote Dallas, not Houston. So to answer your question: No. You didn't "duz gud". And if you think the weight difference between the skyrocket and the sgs2 is a big enough difference, then you should probably do a few curls with a dish towel to get a little stronger. As far as internet speeds go, you have crappy wifi? It's comparable to when you girlfriend says "It was good for me too". She just doesn't have anything better to compare it to. It's pretty awesome getting 45mbps on my phone as others that have experienced it can attest, and as they say; once you go LTE, you can't go back to slower speeds... or you can't go back to playboy! (well no one really says that, but it's awesome!) Think about what technology we will have soon that might require more data or faster speeds. Thinking what you have now is good enough technology wise is short sighted. I'd like to add that I still get unlimited data. It would be kinda lame if I didn't have that. Hey, at least we agree on something! Last but not least this article on engadget indicates that LTE Advanced will launch in 2013. http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/08/atandt-commits-to-lte-advanced-deployment-in-2013-hesse-and-mead/
That means either most people will get LTE sooner that later or some of us will most likely be enjoying near 1gbps while HSPA+ is still good enough for you.
Woooo! Can I get an Amen????

Where did I type Houston?
Oh so now you are resorting to muscular insults. Well before I say anything, I bench 250 and hit the gym every other day, the reason I care about weight is I don't want an ugly fat phone that could be lighter.
I honestly do not see any use for 1gbps download speeds on a MOBILE Phone. Don't get ahead of yourself. PC's don't even require that kind of speed, so why would a phone need it?
Back to LTE... cool you get 45mbps, now name some practical uses of that speed. Doing anything that strains internet connection would not require even a tenth of that speed.

Everyone is crying about the N4 not having LTE but honestly, who needs that? Aren't you guys connected to a wifi anyway for most of the time? HSPA or HSPA+ or whatever it's called fast enough to me.

Actually in my school campus there is highspeed wifi. The only time I need data is while I am driving or somewhere else. Also many times, devices switch off wifi to save battery. This can cause live updates to stop coming. That doesn't happen on mobile data.
Why should a brand new flagship phone NOT support the latest mobile standards?! If there were no need for LTE it wouldn't be available because nobody would use it.

As a T-Mo user, not me. But in a phone that is supposed to be the cream of the crop with all the latest technologies, I can kinda see why some people are slightly butthurt it's not included. With that being said, I definitely do not think it should be a deal breaker like some are claiming.
Don't get me wrong, but I love the speeds that 4g Lte offers, but paying for it its kind of expensive.

Keep in mind, there's always got to be a huge leap forward every year. For the past 3-4 years this has been the amount of cores and ram (specific chipsets aside). What the hell can they do next year, octo-core phone?
Another fanboi trying to justify no LTE... I swear these forums are worse than Apples sometimes.
I personally don't want LTE because there is no unlimited plan, it's too expensive and coverage sucks here in the UK. However am I going to start trying to tell people who are on LTE and enjoy it that they're wrong? Not releasing a new top end Smart Phone with an LTE model is a mistake.. just like it is a mistake to not have a Micro SD slot or a 32GB model.
This phone ha a small niche, it's for people who want to buy a mobile outright, however if you're on contract and getting an upgrade or signing for a new contract you might as well go for another mobile.

I thought LTE wasn't standard, but some Verizon-specific thing? If this is the case... I can see why the Nexus 4 doesn't have it... But do correct me if I'm wrong I've only heard of LTE with Verizon, but haven't actually looked into it at all (I just know it's something I'll probably not use).

All 4G helps with is downloading things. Browsing experience won't change much above 5mbps, after that it's all down to hardware/software

The lg optimus g has lte, its also twice the price. Is lte worth an extra $300 to you?
Personally it would be nice to have LTE because I live in a big city in Canada where there are 3 big carriers that offer LTE using the same bands. I always like to have the latest tech but other than that the nexus 4 seems to fit most of my needs with the DC-HSPA which my carrier also offers. I understand the cost issue but that aside if e phone has LTE than everyone will be happy because places without LTE people can still enjoy HSPA.

Just curious, has Google ever officially described what the Nexus program is? Where can I find out more information about it rather than just taking the words from third party people?
Never needed LTE and probably won't need it until it's shoved down my throat in the future. My current carrier only has 3 mbps (real performance) data connections and I only use it for Facebook, email, checking websites, so I don't really think I need LTE. Though, I'd be happy if they would at least give us true HSPA+ speeds at 21 mbps though...
deltatux
I fully blame Verizon for botching the Galaxy Nexus release for this. It's just too much of a burden for Google to support. It takes Verizon and Sprint forever to roll OS updates, whereas other carriers just push the updates when Google releases them.
I will only get Nexus phones, and am on Verzion, so it's disappointing, but I know why,
Unless there's a carrier with LTE that doesn't require a contract, then I have absolutely no need for it.
No LTE in a new flagship phone = bad
But hey, the technology isn't wise spread yet either, so the benefit would only be to the US and some European countries. So I believe thay Google/LG decided not to hurry with putting that tech in their new phone for now. Nexus 5 is 100% gonna have it, or maybe LG is gonna release a 4G model later
No LTE here anyway. But its rumored to be right around the corner..

My data is like 700 KB/s tops lol. I'm fine with it, I'll be fine with HSPA+.
Nexus S (GSM i9020a)
Euroskank AOKP (Build 5 - 4.1.2)
Matrix Kernel (24.0 - CFS)
Ondemmand (Screen On) (800/200)
Wheatly (Screen Off) (400/200)
Deep Idle (N/A - Noop)
BLX (N/A - Inverted Apps)
Black Exodus (Stock Voltage)
The speeds of LTE are awesome. Everything else that goes with it is horrible.
The dual radios, lead to battery drain. My phone likes to get caught between 3G and 4G and I'm left with a hot phone in my pocket without signal.
The price of LTE, Verizon is just so expensive.
The fact that you can't make one phone fit all, all LTE implementations are different.

This is exactly it, a Nexus can't be a Nexus with contracts and carriers crap.
