New Kindle Fire HD Forum - Please Read - Kindle Fire General

FYI... It looks like the admins have decided to separate out the new Kindle Fire HD devices from this forum...
Amazon 7" Kindle Fire HD
Only the 7" HD device is represented at the moment and there is no forum for the 8.9" HD version yet. Maybe it's because we're still 2+ months out from that ship date, but I've been told by the higher-ups that one will be created as we approach its release date. In the meantime, it looks like all discussions on the new HD versions should now take place over there.
My thread regarding Amazon's announcements made yesterday has been moved over there...

Here's the wiki!

[Help]Kindle Fire ICS A/V working Project...

I first want to say thanks XDA for allowing me to post here. second i want to ask for help. Ive been learning the basics on how to flash roms and root many devices and currently got a Kindle fire because i believed it would get support faster then a Nook Color. i currently have both now and have been waiting for the Kindle fire to recieve an ICS rom that at least has Sound and video working among the working stuff available now. i check every night to see if its up and to no avail. i finally decided to make an XDA account and seek help. I want to be able to build my own ICS ROM. if anyone can help me learn how let me know with a reply.
My System: Lenovo T410 Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit
Devices: Nexus S, Droid X, Nook Color, Kindle Fire
Email: [email protected]
Goal: Get Audio and Video Working on ICS Kindle Fire Roms
I want to extend this to message also to the moderators
-i know you have the ability to add and delete posts on the forums and thats fine but if you can, can you please put this under android Development. i feel this will be useful for all android developers new and old and its best for everyone to get together and work on fixing these snags along the road. i am new to this forum and this is my first post so you know already i cannot do it myself. thanks in advanced.

**WARNING** You will BRICK YOUR KINDLE if you don't READ THIS FIRST!!!

The hardware configuration and software for these devices are significantly different from their 1st generation counterparts (version 6.3.1 and earlier). Their bootloaders are signed, meaning any alteration to the device in regards to installing a custom bootloader (FireFireFire) or custom recovery (TWRP, CWM, COTR) will most assuredly brick your device, PERMANENTLY! There is no fix for this as of yet and and it is unclear if there will ever be.
DO NOT attempt ANY of the tutorials you find in these forums unless you understand exactly what the consequences are. All the information and tutorials you find in these threads were made with the 1st generation Kindle Fires in mind. If you are looking for information regarding certain aspects of the Kindle Fire OS, be warned. While there is still some usable information that carries over to the 2nd generation devices, there is also some that will most definitely render your device completely useless, and with NO way to fix it.
So again, if your device is NOT running software version 6.3.1 or earlier, you are probably in the wrong place, despite what the title of the forum says. The forums you are looking for are located here. And even though those forums say "Kindle Fire 2 and Kindle Fire HD", they are still the same in regards to rooting and modification. Remember, the box will not say you have a Kindle Fire 2, you have to check the software version.
***Pay close attention to the information in those forums and make sure you understand it before trying ANYTHING.***
You have been warned.
Does this need to be a sticky, or what?
It certainly needs to be stickied to keep people from bricking their 2nd gen. Kindles for good!!!
You have potentially saved a bunch of kindle fire hds and 2nd gen kindle fires.
This should be a sticky

Thankyou FSM bigjoe2675!
We are aware of that problem and are discussing possible solutions.

I just received word that the Kindle Fire 2 has been separated out of this forum and merged with the 7" Kindle Fire HD forum. Hopefully that will help to keep the 2nd generation KF owners from getting themselves into trouble, but this thread probably still needs to remain stickied to warn the strays.
I have hope! The developers on here will find a way around this in no time

Guys look at this

I was looking to test roms on kfhd and look at the responses. We could get ubuntu soon on this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119015
While that's all fine and dandy, this does not belong in the development section. In the future, please only post development related threads in here. Thanks.

KindleFireGuy,
This is still a work in progress and depends on many factors so do not get too excited. Eventually, we will offer this ROM although we are hoping to collaborate with others in this community who specialize in custom ROMs since we want to share the ROM, not keep it exclusively.
As soon as Canonical Ubuntu authorizes the release of the platform, we will make it available to developers first, the the end user. Having said this, we are a ways off.
Focus our efforts on CM10, Hashcode has developed a beautiful ROM for the Kindle Fire 2, I am sure he will release on for the HD 8.9" soon as well. This is what we need to be excited about - Ubuntu is a very different approach that requires docks for the home office that are not fully supported yet. When the manufacturs begin to offer a wide array of Docs then Ubuntu will be ready to launch.
We will post an official response when we are authorized to release Ubuntu.

*WARNING* new Kindle Fire HD7 (KFSOWI)

For anyone who has purchased the new Kindle Fire HD7 (KFSOWI) please be aware this is not the same device as the 2012 Kindle Fire HD7 (KFTT) and therefore none of the advice posted in this forum is applicable.
I'm posting this before we see multiple posts re bricked devices from people who have been misled by Amazon's naming conventions.
Link to Amazon's specs for all their Kindle devices are here. Its pretty easy to identify what device you have.
https://developer.amazon.com/sdk/fire/specifications.html
IMO This device should be included in the HDX forum along with the other two 3rd gen devices. I've just acquired my first Kindle (KFSOWI) and am loving it but quickly became aware that there is very little support for it on XDA.
It would also be useful if Amazon's device naming conventions were followed in the various Kindle threads. This is the practice for other devices listed on XDA. eg International SGSiii is GTI9300, US LTE Version GTI9305 etc...
Perhaps a mod could look at this and sort it out?
EDIT - I have started a new thread in the HDX forum for discussion of the KFSOWI as i think it would be best discussed in that forum. Link

Good post. Hopefully others have read around the forum and seen the many other posts noting that none of the newer Kindle's have any root or other exploits available. I suppose an official sticky type of warning would not be such a bad idea though.

Wow. Thanks! Guess I can stop trying to root my KFSOWI. Tried several times, and thought it was the drivers...

Good to know! It's so confusing, Amazon UK currently have the 16 GB Fire HD on sale for £99, but it seems unclear which version that is. It lists a front-facing camera and microphone, so presumably it's the older model? Still, if there's a chance of getting the other one it wouldn't be worth the risk for me. CM still sounds kid of buggy on the KFTT anyway, so a Hudl might be the better option.
It says last generation right on the title of ad. Also, no camera and no HDMI output for 2013 KFHD firmware 11.xxx

So can anyone create a new topic about 3rd gen Fire HD?
because I'm trying to find something and at all forums I see mixup between old-hd7 and new-hd7 and no any new-hd7-specific threads.
So new topic will be pretty helpfull!

Thank you for this clarification, thought I could save money with a kindlefire hd but i lost 100bucks and got a useless piece of plastic.
Now I can stop loosing time try to root it for 1 weeks , good luck for the new devices root research !
EDIT : after little reading it seems HDX got rooted today ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542508 )
Does anybody may now if this root works also on KFSOWI 11.3.1.0 ? ( since KFSOWI got same OS it might maybe work ? )
At the moment it's only working on the 8.9 hdx (KFAPWA & KFAPWI). But it's only a matter of time before the other 2 new devices have root as well. I would advise owners of all 3 devices to use the hdx forum as that is where all the development for these devices will occur.
EDIT - I have started a new thread in the HDX forum for discussion of the KFSOWI as i think it would be best discussed in that forum. Link

Tested it and adresses wont match. I have a pretty slow internet connection, can someone download this:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/kindle-fire-updates/update-kindle-11.3.1.0_user_310084920.bin
and extract boot.img and build.prop (with winrar) and reupload it to this thread?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542456
The developers could change the kernel adresses fitting to our device and compile the exploit for us.

Or make use of the internet-feature named "links"
Root KFSOWI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2544736
By the way: The question was asked here before the above root posting was created.
