how can I put my phone in stock recovery mode? I tried holding both volume keys down and power, it just powercycles. Even if let go on the second screen off. if I continue on holding - it just powercycles. If i hold vol down and power - it goes into download mode...
I have Clockwork installed. If I start recovery from ROM Manager it bypasses stock recovery straight to Cloclwork menu. I am trying to install battery percentage indicator, which I can only do thru stock recovery menu. How can I start stock rec mode?...
Also it says DO NOT INSTALL this lag fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765820 using ROM MANAGER. So how can I install it then??
in clockwork recovery theres an option to boot into regular recovery. i believe its in advanced settings?
adb is your friend. seriously, how have people on this forum not figured this out yet? (I don't actually even know how to reboot into recovery with just the buttons off the top of my head)
either "adb reboot recovery" or download "Terminal Emulator" from the marketplace type "su" and then "reboot recovery"

Should I delete it from my internal after I have the battery indicator installed, should I get rid of that update.zip? I did a backup using ROM Manager before adding the battery indicator. So I have my former ROM and Current ROM backed up.
OMG, I've been going crazy trying to get my phone into boot screen all night. Thanks for this!

yea delete update.zip(battery indicator). open rom manager to install your clockwork recovery which will automatically put an update.zip(clockwork recovery) back on ur sd card. thus "update.zip" is just a rename for whatever program/file.
Also there is an app called quick boot in the market. Its free and will take you to stock reboot and recovery without going through the whole hold power
And vol up and down at same time. Is super easy to use. It have icon on my phone next to rom manager so one will be clockwork recov, and the othe stock.

I have a kernel that replaces stock recovery with clockworkmod. I'm trying to work out whether I can actually distribute such a thing, and also how to incorporate downloading it into my kernel build script so that I don't need to include it with the sources.

I'm pretty sure Koush said he wanted this from the start. The reason he changed the way clockwork recovery works for our phones was because recovery and the system are handled by the same part of system code, unlike with other phones.
He wanted to make it available to be incorporated into other kernels/ROMs instead of relying specifically on his kernel (which is why the roundabout happened from earlier where he offered the stock kernel to revert to)
It doesn't use a custom kernel, it's started from an update.zip normally.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Does our recovery system work the way it does because of lack of fastboot?
Another idea. is there something we can add to build.prop or perhaps init.rc so a command such as adb reboot clockwork would work? Just spitballing here.

Unless I'm mistaken, his original method did require a custom kernel or modified the stock kernel which is why he offered the stock kernel for people to reflash when he provided the final release.

This update.zip will flash clockwork recovery, overwriting the need/ability to use the stock recovery folder with command in it.
For advanced users only.
v.8 Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?dvleg4oatkfxm7w
The credit for this all goes to Bekit for the biggest step forward on the Gtablet, and obviously Koush for the custom recovery to begin with. Roebeet packaged this update.zip.
Instructions:
1) Unpack download to root of sdcard. (Internals /sdcard, NOT /sdcard2)
2) Start tablet while holding volume + and power. (Let go when you see text come up saying entering recovery)
3) You will see a short installation and it will reboot.
4) Check the install by powering off, the powering on with volume+ and power
5) You should be greeted by a menu with Clockworkmod at the top
i have been using clockwork on my gtablet for several days now. it backs up and restores just like i would expect it too.
well done as usual.. props for all involved.
Works great no problems at all !!!
wishlist:
1. add SDCARD2 to the mount and storage section.
2. ... wait that is it.!
Should I be able to take this file and rename to update.zip, put it in the root of "sdcard" internal space, put the recovery folder in root directory too and then boot up with power + volume up to install this?

Or just extract the zip file supplied in the first post onto the sd card. Everything will go into its place. Then boot from recovery using power and volume+.
So, if I place the cwm update.zip and recovery folder in the root of sdcard (internal), then when I boot into recovery, CWM will show up instead? Just want to know if it really is that simple. Also, if I want to flash a new ROM (Like the zpad one), do I simply place the update.zip from that rom anywhere other than the root of "sdcard", and flash using CWM?
One last question, if I delete the CWM update.zip, is it like CWM was never placed on my g tab?
Am I the only one having trouble getting cwrecovery on the root of sd card? cant get this to run. i am a visual learner and reading how to do all this is helping me very little. if anyone would be willing to do a video or reference me to a link so i can learn to do all this, i would appreciate greatly. this is very frustrating tab stock!
hey this might help you get it installed..
plug your gtablet into your computer, then on the gtablet, click the "enable usb storage connection" button
then on your pc, open windows explorer, and open removeable drive F, the letter may be different for you.. it should show 13gb free on it, and there should be an android folder and a dcim folder.. that's the root of the storage inside the tablet.. it's the same as sdcard.. unzip the clockworkblahblah.zip to the root/top level directory of that removeable drive. then turn the tablet off. and then hold down the volume + button while powering it back on, it should install the clockworkmod recovery manager.. that's about it
jw52637 don't feel bad... I'm a visual learner as well.
uncola,
I followed your instructions and I saw the update install on boot up. Now I'm lost. I expected to see and application named ClockworkMod Recovery or something like that... but I did not. How do I know it is installed and how do I use it to back up my stock ROM? Also, do I remove the "update.zip" from the root directory or just leave it there?
Sorry for the questions but I want to learn how to do this so I can stop bothering you guys.

ClockWorkMod Recovery is the recovery system...so you have to boot your tab into recovery (hold volume + and power the tab up). If installed, you'll get the ClockWorkMod Recovery instead of the stock recovery system. You can make backups, do restores, install .zips, etc... from there.....then "reboot" the system to boot back to your normal system.
Thanks tcrews. I moved the update.zip from the root directory to a saved directory then rebooted holding the volume + key and it booted into ClockWorkMod Recovery. I chose back up and everything seemed to backup fine.
So if/when I install another ROM and I do a restore to the ROM I just backed up I should be right back to where I was at that time. I have used Titanium Backup to back up all my applications and settings and know I would have to restore them also.
I'm just wanting to understand how I can get back to "stock" so that I can get the automatic updates from Viewsonic.
Well i just tried it all again, and all worked very well. Thank you very much
Ok, I'm totaly new to this so please bare with me, having some troubles with my G tablet NOT booting so I cant access it through Windows to install CW to fix my tablet. How can I get the Files on the tablet? I can get it to attempt recovery but no luck. PLEASE help. I'm pulling my hair out here.

There is a physical reset button inside the device, or you can try ADB.
I cant get the recovery image to find update.zip
I have clockwork recovery gtab-cwm-v08 installed and renamed to update.zip in the root of the internal sd but when i boot into recovery it goes to the android screen then shows a triangle with a exclamation point, then reboots normally!
I rooted with z4root 1.2.1
I have superuser permission so am rooted!
Unrooted then rooted again figuring this might help!
Tried a few different clockwork recoveries
have no idea what the problem is! if anyone has any clue it would be appreciated!

Had that happen to me. What I did was run the CWM again into the gtab. Next reboot I had CWM insgtalled and working.
Hope that helps
CWM 0.8 is the one that I used and is working for me. I have the gTab w/the "original" partition scheme, and installed it by the original gTab update process.
If you're using newer CWMs I've read posts in the CM6b4 thread that newer CWM version seem to be causing problems for some people.
Also if you have a "newer" "batch" gTab w/a different partition map scheme you might want to check what the latest info is on the IRC channel, #tegratab on freenode IIRC. Might be quickest to ask for help there anyways, as it sounds like this probably isn't your problem.
So about 2 months ago I rooted my phone. I followed the method here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
Everything was ok, until my super user permissions program stopped working. The program opened but its a solid black screen and I cannot give any new program SU permission. At first the programs that already had permission could still have SU permission, but, in an attempt to fix the issue I cleared the program cache and those programs lost their SU permission(like TT and terminal).
Their is a new SU permissions program on the market that I paid for from the same company but I assume because the old one is still installed that it is not showing up for that reason and cannot be opened.
I cannot figure out how to get rid of the original Superuser Permissions program. I have tried every program I could find by surfing forums, I have factory reset the phone... but that SU permissiosn program is still there upon a clean factory reset!
I have the ADB installed on my PC, but when I try to run a remount I get an error that I am not allowed to do that. After my factory reset I tried running back through the walkthrough I listed. Visionary says its temp rooted, but in terminal the SU command says "access denied." I think this all has to do with that bad SU program being in stalled and if I can get that off and install the replacement one I paid for, then the SU could grant access to terminal and I could re-root the phone.
My theory is only speculation. Can anyone tell me how to remove this SU program. Its located in directories that are read only and all the commands I have found to remove it so far have required a rooted terminal command, or ADB remount commands that I cannot use. Please help. Thanks
Couple of things to try. First can you boot into recovery? What Rom are you using if any? Since you already did a factory reset I assume you don't have any data you want to save so I would just reflash a Rom from recovery. I don't remember off the top of my head but I think you hold vol - plus power when booting to get to recovery? Or if your current Rom has the permissions still to boot to recovery from the power menu?
Another thing to try is the "rage" method to gain root. I know there are issues with using visionary after you already have root. So give rage a search and try that. Come to think of it you might just try the rage method first. Let me know how its goin I might be able to help more

Thanks for the reply!!
Nothing has worked. The original superuser permissions is still installed. I get errors when trying to push files to those read only directories even though ADB.
Any ideas on how I can get everything back to factory settings?
What do you mean "a new SU permissions program that I paid for"?
There's only one SU program that I know of. The only paid one that I know of is just a license file for an upcoming, yet to be released, program. You'll need to be specific in order for this to get resolved but it sounds like you may need to reinstall the SU binaries and the SU program.
To uninstall the current one you just need to go to applications>manage, click on the program and then click uninstall. Then use ROM manager to download and install SU for you.
Thanks for the reply but I am way past that. The OS will not let me uninstall the current SU program. The "paid" SU program is a separate program because it asked me to install the file rather than "update" like the free one says when I open it from the market.
I am very specific in my original post.
Somehow the SU program stopped working. New programs that require SU access were not givign the pop up that allowed me to grant SU access. When I open SU its just a black screen with no options. I cleared the cache to try to fix and this removed SU permissions from all the programs that I had already granted SU permissions to(like terminal). I cannot uninstall the program from the built in manager or any of the several file managers I have tried. I also cannot overwrite the current file by "updating" the existing installed version. I paid the 1$ for the paid version because its a different program all together. My thought process was if android sees it as a separate program, it will install it as a separate program and I can use it independantly of the original non-functioning version. That did not work. It says its installed but the icon is no where to be found and I cannot run it, even from a file manager. The old SU icon(of a ninja) still stays in the program list even after I wiped the phone and dida factory reset.
The point is its going to take some advanced procedure to remove the SU program. Its in adirectory that is read only. It takes SU permissions to make that directory read/write and I cant get SU permissions, even temporarily with visionary or Z7. I have tried ADB and it also says permission denied.
So this is NOT resolved yet.
At this point:
-I have reset the phone several times, each time SUpermissions is still installed when the phone comes back up.
-USB debugging is enabled.
-I have googled possible solutions that all have not worked(using ADB failed, updating the SU program failed, clearing the cahce failed, disabling usb debugging then hooking to cpu and reenabling it and using adb to try and use SU command failed...etc
-using 3rd party apps to uninstall failed
-using other SU apps failed
A rough rundown of my problem is:
Phone is rooted. At some point when I opened a NEW app that would require SU access, the pop up generalted by SUpermissions stopped popping up allowing me to give access. Programs I had already granted SU access to would still work(like terminal and titanium backup). Per someones request I tried to clear the cache. When I did this all the programs that DID have SU access lost SU access and I still could not add new programs to the SU list. I have tried ADB commands, file managers, factor resetting the phone. Nothing works. The SUpermissions program is there when I factory reset the phone as if it is one of the preinstalled apps. Apps tell me that I DO have my phone rooted, but that I still need to allow it SU access. I have not been able to uninstall the SU program and if I could get that program updated/re-installed then I believe that I could get the root access back.
Any real suggestions?(not the "is usb debugging enabled" Tier I troubleshooting steps that I am WAY past)
Thank in advance
Kk do you have s-off and the eng-bootloader? Do you have a custom recovery?
If you have s-off and custome recovery you can back up your rom using nandroid, then do a wipe and install a freshly new rom
Also you can boot into clockwork and try to run fix permissons
If you don't have custome recovery (clock work) you will need to have eng-bootloader to do fastboot commands to flash recovery
Also have for adb make sure debuggin is on and boot into bootloader from there try to do adb commands there
If your able to do so and get access
You can go into adb shell and remount to rw then push a new SU.apk in and reboot and su should work as well
This if you don't remember commands
Adb shell
Su
#mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
#
Then exit out of shell then do adb push
Adb push (where ever su user location on pc) /system/app
I installed rom manager by clockworkmod, which I believe is the program you were refering too.
I tried to "fix permissions" and it failed there.
How would I reload the stock ROM?
If I backup the current ROM, and reload it, then it will reload it as it is with SUpermissions already installed.
Where can I find a copy of the stock rom that came on the G2?
BTW
I do have S-off, but I did not install the engineering hboot.
Let me know the best way to go about getting a stock rom put back on.
Do you have clockwork recovery, not rom manager, turn off phone hold vol dwn and power.. you should boot in custome recovery all letters should be orange,
If you have that good! Jus go to dev section and download a stock rom that is rooted put in sdcard and boot in cwm recovery go to back up and restore, do a back up after back up is down do a wip/factory reset, when down click install zip from sdcard, then choose zip from sdcard and look for rom that is in sdcard and flash that.. or you want you could also get cyanogenrom too but also get gapps too
You never answered if you could get to recovery. If you really have soff then your fine. So when your phone boots it says s off correct? And what happens with you hold vol down while booting? Even if you dont have clockwork recovery you can still install the original rom which you can find in the forums.

If you had the cwm recovery b4 and all you did was a factory reset then you should still have it, only time you lose recovery if you update to official rom or you flashed another recovery, clockwork recovery is made my koush, and rom manager is also made by koush

Try flashing another ROM or a kernel. this could be an error or corruption in the folder located in the root folder of your phone. Flash a new ROM and try it again but set a backup and see if this error continued to another ROM. Hope I helped

Ok... maybe I was mistaken. When I boot into recovery, it says S-off, and the options I have to choose from are orange, but ALL the text is not orange.
When I go through ROM manager to flash a ROM(which is the stock rom i downloaded that I want to flash) it says I need to have CWR installed and to use the option at the top to install it. When I click that it says its asking for permissions to install, which means I need SU permissions, which is my problem in the first place.
I have the rom loaded on my SD. As I said, the 4 options I have in the initial recovery mode are orange(though the rest of the text is now orange) but I do not know which one to choose. Any advice? Do I have clockwork recovery installed? If not, is their any way to flash a ROM?

---------------
adb shell
cd etc
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
mv install-recovery.sh install-recovery-no.sh
that will mount the system as writable and rename the file that overwrites the recovery image on reboot so that our custom recovery will stay
--------------
thanks
When you install clock work recovery the first time and than flash super user and try to go back to recovery it will load the stock recovery and have an android and exclamation mark. I take it your using the unlocker method. For clock work to stick every time you go into recovery, most people download rom manager and flash from there. Personally I just flash clock work from fastboot again because I don't like rom manager. Btw here is a tip when you first flash clock work from fastboot make a backup before you install super user so that you can have a backup with stock everything and all you have to do is OEM lock.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Another way to stop the recovery from disappearing each reboot is:
flash recovery
flash superuser
boot into android
download "super manager" app, set it to read/write access (needs superuser), move to system/etc folder and rename install-recovery.sh to something else
then flash recovery again
done
---
Basically what I described is the same the lines in OP do via adb shell.

Btw here is a tip when you first flash clock work from fastboot make a backup before you install super user so that you can have a backup with stock everything and all you have to do is OEM lock.

i think now i get it, if we don't install the "custom recovery" , we can not install the "superuser.zip". and the phone can't be rooted, right ?
and if i go back to the stock recovery after flashing the "superuser.zip" the phone will stay rooted ?
thanks

Well flashing the superuser.zip through recovery is the easiest way. That is why. Recovery is needed mainly ro flash roms radios kernels.... just for root, recovery is not mandatory. you can also use adb, if you know how to do it.

Hi all,
I have a Nexus 7, rooted, running stock 4.1.1 rom, and just installed TWRP 2.1.1
I have been reading this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779092 , however I cannot post on the thread due to being a new/low post count member.
I read that, and it does happen, that each time I reboot, the stock recovery reinstalls itself.
I attempted to follow this....
NOTE: The stock ROM may automatically replace TWRP with the stock recovery. To prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP, boot TWRP, go to the mount menu and mount system, press the home button, then press Advanced -> File Manager. Browse to /system and select the file named recovery-from-boot.p then choose to rename the file to recovery-from-boot.bak

but it doesn't seem to work.
Firstly, when I go to the "Mount" menu, there is only 3 entries.....1 large button which says "Mount USB Storage", and 2 boxes which are selected with a cross in the box, "Unmount Data", and "Unmount Cache". If I do press Mount USB Storage I can only Unmount it to return to menu.
So regardless of that part, if I then go to the file manager, and browse to the system folder, the folder shows up empty, and the only thing showing is a Bin subfolder (also empty)
any ideas whats wrong?
Use the one-click root tool. Install TWRP via GooManager. Profit.

hi,
yeah I did use the tool, all is rooted fine. If you install TWRP from GooManager, and then press to reset to recovery, TWRP loads fine. Once you reboot again however, the stock roms overwriting the TWRP so it no longer works each time. The steps there were supposedly to stop this from happening, from within TWRP, however the options aren't even there. Sadly, I can't post in the TWRP thread due to having less than 10 posts
How r u booting into recovery? Do u power off then use button combo? I use quickboot from market. Its free and boots u into recovery without having to manually turn off the device. I had the same exact issue u drescribe when attempting to follow op instructions. I couldn't do it so I said what the hell, let me see if I boot into recovery using quickboot it overwrites. I was happy to discover that it didn't.

Hi.
I booted into recovery directly from the GooManager option which restarts it into it for me. After a reboot though choosing the same option gives the official recovery I presume (android robot with chest open and exclamation mark)....until I tell it to install the OpenRecoveryScript again
I'm not familiar with Quickboot - take it its just a button to press to get it into recovery the same way as the GooManager option of "Reboot Recovery"?
I'm looking at this TeamEOS nightly build at the moment, toying with the idea of whether to stick with stock rom or flash their custom rom over it.....hard call as its still early days for the roms I think, but if spend ages again installing my apps, will have to do it again afresh when do eventually change the rom

Yes quickboot is as u describe. I know what u mean about starting to flash. It's a bit early for me considering conditions of the roms ( early stages). I am getting tempted tho...lol. won't be long I'm sure.

yup....just installed Quick Boot (Reboot),
chose Recovery, and again its rebooting back to the original recovery instead of the TWRP.
Guess I'll have to flash to a custom rom to get around it if want it sorting now....or wait till I have the minimum post count to post on the main TWRP thread
Not end of the world to reinstall apps and games I guess when the custom roms are more mature, so long as I remember to use Titanium Backup to save my games progress
you need to rename the recovery-restore.sh file in /system/etc/ (I forget the name offhand - if you look at the filenames there you'll figure it out). It restores the stock recovery at every reboot unless deleted or renamed. Then flash your 3rd party recovery.
Hi,
thats the trouble.....I use the file manager in TWRP, and I can't see that file anywhere.
The TWRP page says to go to /system......but when I go there its empty, only one subfolder, /system/bin, which also shows up empty
