For all devs... - Galaxy S III General

Tank you for your very hard work!
I would like see in all your roms the 2g/3g toggle..
I think that it is very useful for our battery...
Am I alone with this request?
Thank you!

No, I agree 100%. However, I think its unlikely that will happen. In the meantime, you can use a tool by a dev called the red baron here on xda to convert most any rom to a 2g/3g toggle compatible rom. Google and thou shalt find, it may be worth the extra hassle. Im using cm9 myself, which has the toggle built in from scratch.
Feel free to report how it goes.

I actually don't like Autokiller for making the phone fast.
Most people use 4-5 apps on their phone 90% of the time.
When re-opening those apps (even the dialer) due to them being killed from memory (thanks, autokiller), it takes longer than if they were still in memory.
My experiences with autokiller say, if a ROM has aggressive settings when you get it, download autokiller just to set them back to normal.
I hate to say that to make friends' Eris's faster (since I have gotten a dozen or more friends to buy this phone), I pretty much put xtrSense on there (or whatever fastest ROM I like is out there), and move on with life.
Some things as simple as optimized .png files in the .apks and simple overclocking make the phone noticably smoother and faster, and are very worthwhile.
This is a great tutorial page though.
You are a boon to the Android community. You are noble to help share your wealth of information with others, especially those who are new to the community. Thank you for your service, good sir. +1
I agree with what he said about autokiller.
You may want to mention that setcpu's widget has caused a lot of problems for people so it should be removed if they start noticing lag.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=763857&highlight=build.prop
^ Smoother scrolling.
You can also change your wifi scanning time by editing this line to 90:
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval = 90
You can put that up to 130 as well. It should save a bit of battery when wifi is turned on.
Thanks for all the input. I only put the suggestions on the page that I have personally dealt with; I rarely ever suggest something personally unless I've tested it personally myself.
What I'll do is run through the things I've missed and the ones I'm not so familiar with, I'll test and see before I do a write up on them. Thanks though; I really do appreciate the help and input. Any more suggestions/comments are more than welcome!
For me it was having a brightness widget handy, turning my Calender and Contacts sync on about once a week and watching my 3G. I used to run Autokiller but it closed that pig called HTC browser to many times on me while I was switching back in forth between apps.
Edit: Actually now that I think about it, I just bought a car charger and called it a day lol
i have a sprint htc hero running CM6 [which is a VERY similar phone to the droid eris for those that dont know] and my GPS was all messed up, but following the GPS section of your guide fixed it for me! thanks!!!!!!!

Took your consideration on the AutoKiller and since it seems to be more of a preference, I put a disclaimer saying what it will do and to set the settings lower if one wants.
Thanks again for your input; it's my pleasure to share the little that I know from experience.

Hey, I'm glad it helped! It was frustrating to me too to wait 3-7 minutes for my stupid GPS to lock in place. It's been a great help to me
I really like your post.
I already knew most of the tips, but I can see how this would be very helpful to most. And you wrote it up wonderfully.
Just added "Dialer One" to the list of the custom apps I recommend. Truly a great app to get away from the default Dialer that I absolutely HATE!
You may want to post an alternative location for SetCPU (market link, barcode) so some people can pay for the app and not get it for free. I believe the dev wants to drive traffic to his paid market app to support him. Not suggesting you remove the free location on the XDA, but help a guy out.
no I dont work for that dev, just saying, give him a 50/50 chance to make some cash for his hard work that everyone takes for granted.
otherwise great blog post.
Dialer One
So far your advice has been spot on. I just flashed my phone with KaosFroyo and am doing all of your suggested changes. I am total agreement that Dialer One is a much better dialer. I made the mistake of using Titanium Backup to uninstall the default dialer. Next thing I knew my phone could not make calls. Is there any way to make the default on screen phone button use Dialer One?
Nice guide. Keep up the good work

Great guide! Thanks for taking the time to put all this together. It should help a lot of people.

I have only one suggestion, as I did not see this on your blog.
You need to have a disclaimer somewhere in that post, preferably at the top of the post, disavowing any liability on your part if someone bricks their phone following your guide.
You also should repeat and STRESS that warning in your radio section. Flashing a radio may be easy with flashable zips, but it is also the easiest way to brick a phone. If that MD5 is off and the person doesn't know it or if their phone screws up somehow during the flash process, it will be dead. You should also probably state that if their radio is working fine, there is absolutely no need to flash a new one.
Other than that, I thought it was a pretty nice guide.
Thanks to everyone that took the time to review the read! In the next couple of days, I should be adding a couple more tips; been so swamped this past wk haven't had much time to do anything.

Well, I'm not sure if you use ADW or LauncherPro. If you use LauncherPro, I know the dock icons (last row) can be customized. Just long press one of the icons (probably the phone icon in your case) > Change shortcut > Applications > Dialer One. That's what I did.

I do have a section under "Root is vital" that has a disclaimer, but maybe I will take the time and create it's own section. I'll add and put the disclaimers up as soon as I can, thanks

More updates to come (as I can find the time to do so!)
You may want to mention the Collin Battery Tweak, but personally I would skip it. It's for more advanced users and you should really only do it once you're comfortable with the phone.
I really like your guide... Kinda wish it was out when i started messing with my eris in march lol.. but i think a good add-on to the guide would be a apps section.. i see a couple of people are recommending some apps and stuff like dialer one and titanium.. If you throw a app section in with a little info on what they do, im sure the people using the guide would love it.. its just a recommendation keep up the work
Used your site along with this one and some irc and now my wife's phone is twice as fast as before, it's sweet...thanks

To all the themers and modders...

First off I just want to thank you all, I think myself and the community appreciate your work in developing content for the relatively new Samsung Epic and building the base of options we have.
That being said, I hope I'm not out of line when I suggest the following:
I know that themes and mods all affect a small core set of files within a ROM, since we're all using different combinations of these, it might be helpful to indicate in the OP for your theme or mod somehow what files are included. If all mods and themes showed this we could see which theme might "knock out" which mod we are running. Just a thought, open for discussion.
Good idea, however idk how that convenient that is for themers. They probably would want to use their time themeing instead of writng everything out.
Sent from my Epic 4G
I'm trying to get my theme to include every mod possible. On my there already got the battery percent mod. My theme I'm testing now has the multi mod also. Im also working on the reboot mod. As we speak. Is there anything else I'm missing?
Sent from my Emotionless Beast of an Epic using the XDA App
No I think that sounds like it, aosp lockscreen? I and I think most people enjoy that.
And to above: I get that but its a take it or leave it idea. We all love a clean informative OP, phoenix kernel is a perfect example.
I run blue min theme and he just upped a version with the reboot option and battery popups gone, but I can flash any other mod without killing parts of the themes, I just thought it might help the community for those who choose to run with it
sent from my epic experience
Aosp lock screen can be flashed without loosing reboot. Check the thread out. The themed version of his aosp don't have the updated services.jar file.
Sent from my Emotionless Beast of an Epic using the XDA App
What you can do is download the files of the mod you are interested in, extract everything out by changing apk's to zips. Then using a program like WinMerge, compare the files of the theme to the corresponding folder of your mod. It will return with any files that are different and any that are similar.
I did this to combine the Multimod Fascinate Music mod with the Circle Battery mod. Took a couple of minutes.
That's a pretty great idea too, I was thinking of trying something like that actually but figured its too easy for a noob to muff up, I've been reading the theme guides so I'm trying to ge a better understanding of all these inner workings
sent from my epic experience
What a coincedence, I just completed the add options to the power menu mod and tried to list all of the effected jars and apks. I did that mostly for other themers and rom creators without thinking that end users would be interested. I don't think its realistic to expect everyone to do this but it would be helpful for sure.
As for blue mini, I plan on adding that mod in soon, just busy right now. Sorry for slacking...lol
sent by an Epic4g through the cosmos
ha! yeah i think it was actually one of your posts which gave me the idea as i found it helpful. i realized that certain features would get knocked out, yada yada. np, thanks for your work. like i said i dont really expect everyone to do it but it would be helpful

Dev shopping for music-only ROM idea

I had been thinking of all those who are going to or already have gotten a new phone, but thanks to the development community still love their old Erii. I am going to eventually (as soon as I get a job) switch mine, but I really love my Eris and don't want to see it end up getting tossed out like it's garbage. So I had an idea for a super-light ROM that disables or deletes anything not need for being a fancy mp3 player (read Android version of an iPod Touch).
I had asked Workshed if he might want to do it, and he said he thinks it's a great idea. I think it should happen and so I am asking the rest of the devs to try.
It should :
Be as fast as possible.
Be super stable.
Have (baked in) the WiFi only script.
Be sexy.
If possible, be either ICS or ICS-themed. (optional but would be cool)
If there is a dev that feels like giving it a try, respond here and see what you can do.
I love you all here on XDA. But even more so the development community of the Eris. It's made the using of such an outdated phone bearable and, in fact, enjoyable.
a froyo rom like this was made a year ago.. im surprised nobody has made a gingerbread version.. and honestly for a device thats not a phone.. i could deal with froyo... 2.3 on my touch pro 2 runs so slow...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979808
I have made my own "music only" ROM based off GSB 4.5 that workshed just released.
basically, I just load the "wifi-only" script via init.d, and have stripped out everything not necessary. The only remaining annoyance is that the signal bars for the cell network still appear in the status bar, just grayed out and with an x over them... I'm trying to find a way to remove the signal bars entirely from the device, and then I will be happy.
Is it not possible to just remove them from systemui. In a sense just remove the actual PNG files.
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk
I'm using xtrROM, because I needed native wma support. I stripped everything I didn't need. I used zeam launcher and put only one screen to avoid the annoying auto scroll from the well known crappy track-ball problem. I underclocked it with setcpu, down to 256Hz with the screen off. Added wifi only script, and I can get about 6 days moderate use and 8 hours of continuous play. I think an mp3 rom is a good idea, but I have already got a good setup. WMA support is a must though.

Futile post, I made a thread with the rom I released.
Called (ROM) Abridged for Music
I'll have to try that one once I get my new phone (soon so don't worry). If it's not fast, I suggest asking workshed for tips, since GSB has speed figured out. It should be really fast if the bloat gets removed, or at least easy to make faster. And as far as forgetting the script, don't worry. All devs forget something from time to time.
Also, if there are any devs working on ICS for the Eris, I would love one of them to try this out, as it could be a simpler "starter version" of their final work and be perfectly suited for this. After all, most ROMs start out really rough, with no working phone or some such problem. In this version, they wouldn't have to work all the major problems out, after all. All we want is to have no phone access, but WiFi. Not even Bluetooth.
However, I have to point out that this thread is for getting devs interested in the project. You should make your own thread for the result, so people can come to you and let you know of issues and suggestions.

preludedrew: oh btw, kinda on the same subject of your small builds
preludedrew: I Want to do a 'media' build
preludedrew: more or less, a build that can be used as a media player
preludedrew: goes through and disables all telephony except wifi
preludedrew: for people that have spare phones and want to use them as mp3 players.

So regardless of now, this denote you gave might end all the controversy about this 'MP3' rom run. Very discreet of you and your team

might make a 4.4 rom for the p600 if anyone is interested

there isnt much development being done for this device lately. ive only ever built a few roms for myself, but if there is enough demand and i can get some features that people want, i could get in the game. i might need a little help and it might be a little slow for releases though, as im still in school. anyone interested?

What I would like to see are some features I know from cyanogenmod:
Close apps with long press back key
Customizable pull down menu
Screenshots via on/off menu
Maybe a better music player
I have lots of ideas
Very interested! How about a dark theme? All black backgrounds instead of the ugly touchwiz white???????????
Its realy not that easy to change from wihte to black BG. Also tekst switch needed.and the fun part comes now...basicly for best result needed for ALL systemapps.

A good minimal rom debloated and with just a few tweaks sounds perfect!

What about active display, could it be implemented "natively" like some aosp roms (Omni's is superb) ?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
A fully debloated kk-Rom was great with a good tweaked Kernel with OC/UV-features. Than the ability to chance the screen-resolution to fullHD for better gaming-performance like in SDBAGS Cromi-X Rom for Asus tf701t. ES File-Explorer, Xposed Framework as system apps. Than the old webkit-android-browser(aosp) with bookmark-sync, like in Scroslers Clean-Rom.
And I think there is a lot more to make KK better.
sorry guys, project is cancelled. hanspampel made a 4.4 kat rom which is almost exactly what i would have done. i highly recommend checking it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2725121

ROM Recommendations for Atrix 4G

I have been scouring the forums for a long time now and after many flashes I'm still not quite happy with what I have come across. It just hurts going back to GB because I find apps that aren't compatible, so I suppose that I'm asking for help finding an ICS+ ROM that will connect to AT&T, wifi, GPS, and is for the most part stable.
I am not asking for "the best ROM", I do apologize if this breaks the rules but I do want some current information about some good stable ROMs that I can look into. I am asking opinions for those of you that feel you finally have the best setup for you and please include what you don't like it if anything.
You guys obviously don't know me, so you can suggest ROMs for me, I simply want others opinions on they have had luck with perhaps i have missed a retired jewel
Perhaps the CM10+ bugs have been fixed since I've last looked.
I don't recall what it's currently running now, but the calendar app won't work..it's not so much a deal breaker because it generally worked pretty well from I understood, but for someone that relies on a calendar, it's really annoying.
In the mean time I'm going to get back to my search. Thank you very much for any info that any of my Atrix brothers and sisters might share.

Almost everythings works (included Wifi, BT, GPS) in Blur ICS, CM9, CM10 and CM10.1. Now the MIC input for apps (Skype, Googlenow, etc) is an issue in some builds and also HDMI out
Now i'm using AtrICS 2.0 + 24-04 Krystianps kernel, I heavy use Lapdock thats why I need proper HDMI-out
Other HDMI-Out option is CM10 (with old 2.3 kernel), I'll test that later
CM 10.1 doesnt have HDMI-Out but performs really good. Nice battery managament
