I get it tomorrow! - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Get my nexus 7 tomorrow. Just want to know what to look for so I know if I have a good device. So far I've seen issues with: dead pixels, bad speakers, lifted screens,.... anything else I'm missing? What should I do.. take it back to the store or contact Google? Thanks Also buying it from the store I should still get the play store credits correct? Kind of looking forward to that. Would be a total downer if I don't.

All the best and congrats at the same time for your purchase !! Have a look at the Home Screen thread and yes, download Nova Launcher if you wanna experience the home screen in the landscape mode. btw, I have ordered mine too. sadly, it will take 2-3 weeks to arrive.

woot!
BTW, there a simple build.prop edit to make the homescreen auto rotate, all you do is add this line to your build.prop and reboot.. launcher.force_enable_rotation=true

Is it necessary to root the device to make the above code work ? Also, people have experienced slight bugs with it. I might be wrong but that's what I read in the forums here.

I'm just assuming, and can be very wrong since I don't use adb, but its probably possible to add that line to the build.prop with adb. its much easier with root though(root explorer). knowing ÜBER™, he'll probably have it rooted as fast as did

for any nexus its really easy. heres the process in a nutshell..
1. fastboot oem unlock
2. fastboot a custom recovery(twrp or cwm, i recommend twrp)
3. flash the su binaries or a custom rom in your custom recovery
4. reboot
5. profit
no need for root toolkits, youll learn nothing from them.

do a little reading, familiarize yourself with the words/terms, youll pick it up. what scares and messes up most are the words. the process is actually very easy but the word/terms make it seem intimidating.

I remember when I thought I was going to get my tablet the next day I ordered from Google, so I had to wait for UPS to bring the tablet to me.
Camped the tracking site every day, and it said the estimated date was exactly 3 days from purchase. The day it was supposed to arrive, the information on the site updated like all my other packages (left the shipping warehouse and was marked as out for delivery). Waited all day, got nothing, and eventually late in the day the order was rescheduled for like 2-3 days later :/
UPS Live support said it was a shipping mistake. Can't recall what was exactly said, but it was almost as if they were blaming Google for shipping the package later then mentioned...
Also, I never actually manually rooted my device, but would you just flash a custom recovery, push a CWM-flashable superuser file (either Superuser, or SuperSU), and then flash it for root? And then after that, I think you can install busybox somehow?

No... Im going out to get it tomorrow. As long as Google gives my payout like they should.

Well lazy Google didn't pay me my money... so I won't be getting it till tomorrow. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Bump for this!
We really need a recovery for A700F, we already have root thanks to ShinySide, but without Recovery there's no chance for custom ROMS.
I would have developed/ported it by myself but I haven't found any guide how to do it and I don't have the sufficient knowledge.

You're wrong, as long as you have root you can install custom roms with Flashfire, in fact it does most things a custom recovery can including backups.
If I get time I'll knock up a build of twrp.
What build is this device running at the moment, is it bootloader unlocked and is it Exynos or qualcomm?
I require someone to upload their recovery.img from the stock firmware.
Note: I don't have this device so a decent tester is required who doesn't mess about.

Thats not a problem I just need to adjust the resolution.
It works OK apart from that, backups etc?
Can you check adb works. Load ADB, Connect your device and type ADB DEVICES. See if your device is detected.

It can't. It's just a dump of the system partition. Usually benefits people with other devices looking for something off this device. Maybe an updated app or lib.

If someone could modify this to be able to prompt me for an unlock code when I enter a different SIM card, I would be very, very happy. Apparently T-Mobile does something to stop the prompt from coming up, and I want to be able to unlock it almost immediately. I'm on my way to get the phone now, but I don't want to come home with a useless paperweight.
Apparently a similar stock ROM was created for the LG G4 as it had the same problem. I would love to see a ROM for this once TWRP is publicly released for the V10!

I want to root my Nexus 6p

I want to root it so bad but I have not even the slightest clue on how to use adb command or any of that. I'm surprised this phone being pure Google doesn't have one click root. I have even tried finding some one on Craig's list but no luck.
Oh well I guess I'm stuck on stock

Just an opinion, if you have no clue how to use adb, fastboot, and other things like that, you have no business rooting your phone. Routing can sometimes cause problems that require you to use these tools to fix them

There's a step by step guide that walks you through it.
If you have no idea how to root, I have to ask, why do you even want root?
I second posts #4 and #5. Just leave the phone alone and forget you even found this website.

Instead of berating you for not having any experience with adb and fastboot (like some other members are doing here) I'm going to encourage you to learn. It isn't hard, once you've learned how to use it you'll wonder why it took you so long. I have a detailed guide here:

It explains everything in detail, in a way that should be easy to understand, from installing adb/fastboot on your PC, to unlocking your bootloader, and everything else. Have a read.

ALL THINGS ROOT, BOOTLOADER, ETC

Good day all,
I noticed several cluttered threads in Q&A that are becoming more of a discussion than question and answer format.
I wanted to make this thread as a one stop shop for all things Root and Bootloader related for the G-930T (Tmobile Galaxy Note 7).
Please discuss root, bootloader and work with each other in here.
Please do not discuss the bounty in here, and do not clutter the bounty thread with casual conversation about root.
Cheers,

Well we know the Bootloader is locked and can only be unlocked by Samsung( That's not gonna happen).
Based on what happened and is continuing to happen with the S7 there is a possibility of achieving Root on the N7(ENG) which I will not be a guinea pig and try. I'm sure others will if and when it's available.

One of them is from Google and doesn't care about Knoxx and the other is from Samsung and does care about Knoxx. Two completely different things. The Samsung Pay not working after Knoxx is tripped has been going on for a year as of tomorrow. The systemless root that doesn't trip Knoxx is one thing but as soon as you start flashing, kiss Samsung Pay goodbye.
Yep, and worst of all. Once it's tripped, Samsung pay will never work again on that device

Luckily for me, if root becomes available its a no-brainer. Samsung pay doesn't support my bank, and I won't have a credit card. Even if Samsung Pay would work for me, it would still be an easy choice to have root instead. I would like to play around with altering the speaker volume, deleting bloatware, making tweaks, ad blocking, etc.

In order for you to flash anything to any bootloader, it needs to be unlocked. With it locked Odin says it can't. So till the note 7 gets unlocked (in time) we have to wait. Phone only few days old, be work around soon.

That is true. Android 7 Nougat will have more security features that Samsung is going to take advantage of with the Galaxy Note 7. That may make unlocking bootloader and rooting even more difficult.

I got the stock n930t boot.img but im wondering is how would i go by making a kernel "engboot". I also removed dm-verity but that didn't work. All i get is a failed message through odin. Another testing i have done is I even just modified one simple thing in the stock kernel say in default.prop ro.secure=1 to =0 and i still get a failed messsge. Once i flashed the stock unmodified version of the kernel i would get a success message and works which means any modification to the kernel will cause it to fail i just have to see what in the kernel checks for md5 changes or it may be something else if more devs can help together, then we can get this working.

1. There is no way to convert a kernel to an "engboot."
2. The bootloader is LOCKED, so anything you do to the kernel's ramdisk will obviously not work because the whole point of dm-verity and a locked bootloader, among other things, is to stop the modification of system images, including the kernel ramdisk. Surely you didn't think it would be as easy as unpacking the boot.img, changing the ro.secure value from 1 to 0, then repacking..... did you?
3. The kernel doesn't "check" for anything MD5 related.
4. The bootloader is rejecting your changes, not the kernel.
5. Nothing you do to the boot.img, no matter how many devs you have, will do any good.
Hang tight, guys. We're trying everything we can.

Working Hotspot Without Provisioning Check Guide

For those like myself that want to be able to use hotspot and do not have a custom ROM with it already enabled I found a working solution:
Step 1
Download this hacked apk here:
http://downloadmirror.co/Usp/CarrierEntitlement.apk
Step 2
Your going to want to paste this inside /system_root/system/priv-app/CarrierEntitlement and replace the one already there.
Step 3
Change the permissions on the hacked apk to match the ones on the original (so it functions the same way)
I have attached a screenshot from Root Explorer as to what the correct permissions settings looks like.
Step 4
Reboot and profit.
Cheers,
Jake
Have to be rooted I assume though?

Yes because it requires overwriting a system apk. But this is easily achieved with flashing the SuperSU zip in TWRP
Can you explain how this is different than editing the build prop? Also what carrier are you using this mod with?

sounds good i have no unlocked yet though lol
Ah yea. Most mods and hacks will require it. Luckily with our phones it's super easy and free and Officially supported by Google! All tutorials can be found directly through them online!

This might be a stupid question but can I unroot after making the change?
I suppose. It will stay until you change roms or update. Long as you don't reflash anything it will persist.
If I choose to root device only, Pixel XL, and apply this method, will I still be able to receive the software/security updates from Google? I believe if you have a custom rom installed, it wouldn't work.

What exactly is the process to unroot without a reset? I've rooted every device I've owned and never went back... Until this one. I like android pay... So no root for now. Would love to do the mod and unroot if possible to keep Android pay working. But tethering is far more important than taping my phone to pay.
Inside SuperSU app there an Full Unroot option that will do it for you

Just side load the OTA image. Wont wipe a thing
You can just add the following line to your build.prop file, save and reboot then the provisioning check will be bypassed.
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
I'm curious why this method is better than the one already listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/themes/mod-tethermod-systemless-install-guide-t3501448
The one linked above can be binded to the /su directory and will survive OTA's...plus it comes with an installer if you use TWRP

Looks like I'll be rooting tonight then. But in reality other than tethering, I really have no need for root, or a need to jump on 7.1.1 just yet.... Unless there is some shiny new toy hidden inside it lol
