Samsung has been the undisputed flagship carrier of Google’s Android mobile operating system. But the court defeat by Apple was an alarming development for Google, which sees Apple widening its battle front against Android makers. Google apparently doesn’t want the Samsung setback to drag the whole fleet down and is now distancing itself from its most critical business partner.
If samsung is the biggest seller of android phones. and google doesn't want the drag from samsung, do you think this will cause trouble for the android market if google is purposely distancing itself? I sure hope not

Finally, somebody who thinks before jumping to conclusions. The lawsuit has no effect on Android as an entity. It's open source, nothing short of the end of the world will hurt it.
google never said they were distancing themselves from samsung, thats what the reporter said. Google just said the samsung trial had nothing to do with them. thats not distancing, its distinguishing.
i understand what you guys are saying, but from the public eye who doesn't know much about android OS like some of us do, it spells bad publicity to android dont you think? samsung is the biggest distributor of android phones and if samsung is being sued by apple and if apple is winning these law suits then the public is going to say, hey maybe they're just a rip-off blah blah blah so they won't buy samsung. google could lose alot of money with this.
^ the public isn't aware. Just ask your neighbor, coworker etc.... They have no clue.
Apple is only winning in the US. The world is much larger beyond the US.

I would love to see this lawsuit go somewhere, but the only one that will benefit is lawyers. Phone makers just wont announce any updates until they are ready to be released fearful of lawsuits.

The i9000 does. And the canadians.
Its just the US.
And I think samsung purposely told tmo to not release the update because it would impeed sales of the vibrant 4g, which would definitely be against the law since all galaxy s phones were launched with the specific statement of "will be upgraded to android 2.2"

looking at the comments, makes me lol. Seems like some Apple fans
True, but Apple doesn't pay for its OS, it actually makes it, unlike Google, they bought it, shoved a bunch of stolen tech from other companies, repackaged it as "Google invention" and gave it away. Remeber, MS is making the bulk of manufacturers pay them between $5 and $10 per handest, then you add in Apple's cut, RIM's cut, Oracle's cut and whomever else's cut from each phone sold and you see their profits decline even further. Also MS makes more money off Android than Google does in Ads, kind of sad isn't it. To me Android does not make any sense to hang onto as a manufacturer, its not a viable and sustainable OS, its fragmentation is a joke, and the security is laughable. The only reason they sell these cheap plastic knockoffs are because of two reasons, and two resons only, first its free or darn cheap and second, it's not made by Apple. In its simpliest terms, that is the only reasons why.
Android sold people on the fact that it is so called open and free, its not, at all, but most people bought into that idea. Why? because Google told them so, so people beleived it. Truth is, Android is the worst Mobile OS in history when it comes to fragmantation, malware, trojans, viruses, and a slew of other problems. More so than ANY phone on the market, worse than Windows Mobile. Heck, I'd go as far as to say Android is neck and neck with the windows desktop OS when it comes to security threats and like I said, its the ONLY mobile OS to have this big of a problem. If you call having to install an anti-virus program on a mobile free and open, then you can have it.]

Unless it is indefinite I would keep my storage down to the "free" level. The problem is once they hook you into all that storage and it becomes necessary and the only option they then can start billing. Likely something people would not have done themselves.
As for me. I'd prefer a 32MB phone with a 64MB card.....I am my own DropBox.
I do have the free account to upload files I want to later use on my phone or in my business to transfer shared files when necessary . But I don't use it for Mass Storage.

Nice to see someone from the wonderful island nation of Barbados here!! I live in St. James near Holetown a month or two out of the year on average. Haven't been down in a while though (getting homesick something awful!) .
What provider are you using, and how are the data speeds? I usually go with a pay-as-you-go SIM from Digicell (good for island hopping), but might go C&W if there are better speeds/data buckets/tariffs.
It is so repulsive that Google is getting on the advertising train even with their naming convention. I cant believe they are calling the new OS "KITKAT" instead of "KeyLimePie". Should be "KickbackKingdom" or "KeepKneepads".

It's indeed getting more commercial which CAN mean that they('Google') only see $$ bills and don't give much attention about their OS.

Why is everybody bent out of shape? No money was exchanged in this deal at all, it was corporate synergy at its best. The reason Google went with KitKat was because KitKat bars are the Google teams favorite chocolate bar and they wanted to acknowledge that. They asked KitKat for their permission and 24hours later they agreed and decided to take it a step further and launch a campaign around the idea.
Google gets more recognition for android with the non techie people because more of them will actually know about the new android updates and their naming scheme. You can just imagine regular people wanting to know what the next android "flavor" will be, and they might actually start demanding updates and force the hands of the carriers and manufacturers because more people will actually care about them. Hell, Google might even make this a yearly thing and if it goes well we might have companies clamoring to be "The next big update" kind of like how people wait to see who the next Bond is going to be, but on a smaller scale.
KitKat will get marketing practically free, and have an association with the most popular mobile OS in the world. They now have permission to use Andy the android in their commercials, and if you go to the KitKat website you can see what I'm talking about. They just created an entire marketing campaign around android without paying Google a single cent
Perfect corporate synergy, this is a CEO's wet dream.

I absolutely love it. Everyone knew the android OS was being named after delicious treats.
After all, it threw a curve ball to anyone and everyone on the KeyLimePie bandwagon. I mean key lime pie does start with a K. but the word Key itself isnt essentially a "Treat" instead the word "pie" is the treat. Key lime is just the flavor. You know? Just a random rant.
What's the fuss?
I got news for you guys, Google has been a for-profit organization since they got started and makes BILLIONS of dollars in profit yearly. To act like they were your favorite "indie" music band that just sold out with this move is a little disingenuous (IMHO).
Android is a mess right now as everyone is trying to abuse the open nature to install bloatware and make warped systems. Google need to take control back.
