Your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is transmitted to the Network provider the moment you switch ON your phone
It is used by your Network to identify the following
1) The first two numbers is RBI (Reporting Body Identifier) = who registered that type of phone ( verify here )
2) The next four numbers is TAC (Type Allocation Code) = what type of unit and its complete specifications
3)The next two numbers is FAC (Final Assembly Code) = who manufacture it
example :-
01 AEG
04 Samsung
07 Motorola
10 Nokia
30 Ericsson
41 Siemens
50 Bosch
51 Sony
4) The next six numbers is the Serial Number of the Phone
5) The last number is sort of a check sum, that verifies the previous numbers
Combined a total of 15 numbers is used by your network to get the complete information about your phone that is used against their database of Blacklisted phones and final approval to connect to their network, IF they were inaccurate or had complaints (like being stolen, not paid telecoms dues etc) it will be rejected and BLOCKED immediately from connecting to that Network
You can verify all this by entering you IMEI here and here
And also here to check if it is blacklisted
Your IMEI is also needed for networks to BLOCK your phone when needed as well as ANTI theft apps.
Hence if your IMEI changes or gets lost, it may fail to connect to the network, depending on the restrictions of that network provider.
It is clear that Flashing custom ROMS can cause your IMEI to Change or get deleted as they may be ported from another manufacturer or from another version of the same manufacturer as the IMEI embedded in the chip of your phone.
IF you want to AVOID this problem, safe you EFS folder the moment you think of Flashing any ROM that is NOT the original Firmware for that phone
It is noted that to resolve this problem you have to return to its original firmware to recover your embedded IMEI and do a progressive upgrade . eg. from GingerBread to ICS before going on to Jelly Bean

I believe this is also possible as some of the manufacturers are using more than one FAC (Final Assembly Code) and some do have the same FAC....end of the day only the manufacturer would have chosen what they wish to use, on the other hand the checksum of the 15 numbers in total, should give the correct model and specs to the network .

I had this very problem tonight. Flashed back to stock to try and fix a camera problem, then just installed cm10 to fix the partitions and applied my JB backup.
That's when I hit the imei problem. When I copied the efs folder across and rebooted it didn't fix it, came up some error. Then I manually copied the imei folder across, and then manually copy/replaced the loose files from my efs backup across into efs, leaving the extra files that were there from the install.
Meaning instead of completely replacing the efs folder with my backed up one, just adding all the files from the backup folder into the installed efs folder, replace any with identical names though.
Rebooted and it worked fine saving me having to go back to GB and progressively work my way back up. Nice..

Nope...what you did has already been written and advised as a way, to resolve IMEI recovery by me in June 2012 and other methods were recently deleted by MODs as they can sort of edit the IMEI (which is illegal to do) ..so, no problem, you have done it in one way ( because you had a backup) and there are other ways too...all compiled on that link as well as My Android Solutions, link below
Just had a proper read through that thread. Thanks
I thought that the way I did it was a little different because it didn't work when I tried replacing the installed efs folder with my backed up one, maybe not though.

I had recently flashed my rom to wm6.5 without thinking much at all.
I then find out that my imei is now different from what is printed on hte phone (under the battery)
As I dont really like the WM6.5 rom, I used the rom from this thread to go back to wm6.1, everything looks the same as i 1st got the phone. BUT the imei shown in "Device ID" and "About" remains different from the original imei on the phone. I also checked it by *#06#.
So where did I get this imei no from? Did i get it from the wm6.5 roms?
I search and yet to find a tool to edit the imei yet. any advice from anyone pls?
Hello Frank, have a custom Rom wm 6.5 installed aswell and indeed my IMEI also changed. Did not pay attention to it sofar, so thanks for pointing this out.....
Think that a different IMEI is not so much an issue unless you have to bring it to HTC for repair.....therefor always the recommendation to back-up your original Rom.....with original IMEI
Change of the IMEI might be the problem. And the big one. As I know, changing of IMEI is illegal in almost all countries and might be prosecuted. Also your mobile phone operator can put it on blacklist and you will not be able to connect to network. More here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276851
Anyway, there are some tools available, but I can't point you directly. Try to google them.
frankbeer, Frank Caarls: Which ROM do you use? I can take a closer look at it. And please send me that new changed IMEI via PM.
The last 2 digits of the IMEI can change, they are the Software Version Number (SVN).
Only the 1st 15 matter.
Dave
Hello Dave, is correct....last 2 digits changed......my IMEI under battery only shows first 15 numbers.....
Frank Caarls: Then you are making false alarm. Next time please study, what is IMEI and from how much number it is composed. And as I told you changing of IMEI is a problem and that is why I posted that link, so please make fun from somebody else. Btw. you cannot backup IMEI in your ROM.
Hello all
Seeing as my last thread got closed because I asked about writing MY OWN IMEI back to my phone manually (which apparently is illegal... not sure why...) I decided to ask a couple of different questions instead:
1: Will installing a custom ROM fix my IMEI?
2: Can I install a custom ROM on my I9300 which is currently locked to Three
3: Why is it illegal to write MY OWN IMEI (found behind my battery) back to my device that is corrupted?
Thanks
Have you searched the forum for the imei / serial fix?

1.Tell me what u 've done u lost ur imei?
2. What u mean?
3. In many countries changing IMEI is illegal. That can only be done only by official services. Even restoring ur own imei can in that fact is illegal cuz u r not allowed serbice. Second thing even if u tell "I want to do it for myself only" that not mean its 100 % sure. Even if u tellthe true, some other ppl can lock at our instructions and do this illegal. I think that is the reason why u've got closed the old topic.

1 - flashed stock unbranded 4.3 rom which changed efs to v2, then reverted back to different variations of 4.04 and 4.1.2 trying to cure the "Not Registered On Network" issue I was having. This has seemingly damaged my efs folder which I did not back up (as I didn't even know about this folder)
2 - My I9300 is currently sim-locked to accept only sim cards from the Three UK network
3 - Thanks, this point is much clearer now.

1. When u updated rom to 4.3 ur /EFS files got changed to v2. If u didnt made backup of thats files u cant downgrade low than 4.3
Keep 4.3 with MK6 ota update and IMEI will be fine.
2. Simlock is not same as brand of firmware. U can use any brand or unbranded rom. Branded rom=bloatware from operator, most of them useless, if want to uninstall it u need root cuz those app are preinstaled with rom in ur system. If u want warranty, use branded soft from ur operator. If want smooth and good system w/o trashes use unbranded soft.

I am not sure that's completely correct.
My understanding is that EFS changed to v2 from July 2013 XXEMG* onwards. "This means if you have flashed an official ROM (or custom ROM based on official) from July 2013 (MG* or newer), you are now in a situation whereby only an EFS v2 baseband (MG* or newer) can read the IMEI in /EFS." This therefore also includes the latest versions of 4.2.1.

Hello,
I have an issue with my gt-i9505.
It was running fine, I received the 4.4.2 OTA update, but it failed several times.
So hooked it up to the PC and used KIES 3 ( latest version ) to update to the latest build.
Suddenly I only had 2G data connection left, I tried switching to WCDMA only and it showed me this circle with a diagonal line in it.
After that I tried rebooting several times, but to no avail.
After this I replaced the sim card, same issue ( went to the provider store to get a replacement ).
So still with this issue, I booted up the recovery and did a hard reset.
Still the same issue.
It is very annoying as I am relying on my mobile data a lot.
Anybody any clue?
1. Paste here one screenshot of what appears in Kies 3
2. Dial *#1234# and paste here one screenshot too pls
For the kies question, what do you want to see in the screen shot ?
Here Is the 1234 screen.
PS im from the Netherlands and this is a Vodafone branded phone.

Suddenly it all makes sense to me!
This is what I think happened:
I connected the phone to KIES while on the custom firmware, the CSC code must have been set to Bulgarian or something...
Since i did not change CSC afterwards on regular 4.3, I think the value was still set to bulgarian, because now that i think about it I saw the disclaimer in a weird language to me...
So downloading the proper firmware now.
Waiting for it and will flash and check back in here...
I feel stupid.
Well... That didn't work either.
Going back to 4.3, praying almost..
Edit: can't downgrade.
Oh wonderful day
Edit: restored but still only 2g....
Edit:
Just keeps getting weirder and weirder.
I was in another town and suddenly saw the G logo change to E
When I was almost leaving the city I had a working 4G connection.
I leave the town and back at G again sadly...
Seriously this thing is freaking me out...
Bump.
Still the same issue, Provider is at a loss as well it seems.
Samsung is looking into replacing the handset, but deciding if they will takes them a week.
The help received here is very appreciated.
Hope you guys can help me solve this.
Checked my sim in a S3 and well... It worked !
Got instant 3G connection.
So now we can surely say it is the phone.
Also flashed agian with 4.4.2 official stock rom, issue is persistent.
Hope you guys can help me

Hello Repulsa,
Yes I did,I even recreated it via settings on the mobile provider website, even after that only the 2G connection works.
When I go into servicemode, none of the suggested key inputs give me anything, it just stays on that page.
If connected to the GSM network (900), I will see it as connected in the service menu.
When I select WCDMA it shows me that it is unavailable.
IF it sees a WCDMA connection, it shows no data and on registering it on the network all connection is lost.
If it sees the WCDMA connection it will state Band1 and IDLE constantly, it will go to active for 10 seconds and jump back to IDLE.
Also:
In this servicemenu it states :
IMEI Certi : NA
But if I do *#06# the correct IMEI is shown...

Well, it didn't work so went to the service center.
you want to know their answer:
We can't do anything for you!
When i showed him the servicemode menu, he was stunned and did not know what it was...
My provider is refusing to help me in a quick way, now calling Samsung praying for help.
But really, I've missed 2 agenda appointments and had to drive home! to get wifi to load google maps...
Still they say i have to wait for them.
This is insane!
For all of you :
Thank you so much for all your effort and help!
Edit:
For now I have switched to the evil apple....
You guessed it, EVERYTHING works!
On the gt-i9300 : Everything works.
Edit2:
So on advice of Samsung I have flashed CM to my phone.
It did not resolve the issue, but might shed some light on it.
It constantly showed an E, so there was an Edge connection...
When in the menu I switched to CWDMA only and phone process crashed.
So tried another setting, only GSM : Again failure and a crashing phone process...
Only setting to worldwide or LTE lets me connect to Edge, nothing else.
And to make it more fun, I tried with a sim of a person next to me with also a GT-I 9505, with a SIM that supports 4G and on a location where we verified there was 4G coverage and saw it on his phone.
So booted CM for the first time with his sim and the result was the above.
I can now safely say : this is a hardware issue to my opinion.
Also noticed that some of my SMS messages have been sending 8 times , 10 times or even not at all for some!
If anybody wants to have a last shot at this: Be my guest, but I am not expecting this thing to work as it should anymore.
I just checked my pc and checked my AV software ( the only consistent software between my machines) and found out that a lot of DLL files used by kies were blocked by my AV ...
Can this help understand the issue?
It even blocked adb-windows.exe from being loaded.
What I will do :
Remove the AV from the pc.
Run the AV removal tool.
Reboot
Reconnect the phone.
Reflash it.
See if issue is resolved.
Will post back later today.
Fingers crossed people!
P.S.: AV is Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 with protected mode ENABLED.
Final update.
Ok, so I changed the CSC to VDF...
Was on SIM.
Still no 3G, only 2G.
On a different provider it goes up to Edge.
Could it be the IMEI Certificate is used for higher speed connections?
Either way, this phone is a drama.
And well the 'service' from samsung hasn't really been optimal.
After it has been swapped, I'm going for a different brand.
Two days ago,I posted a new way to unlock bl.First, Its my mistake that I posted it ambiguous.
But the way really existed.I didnt lied.Beause I am not good at English.I just hope someone can hack it but I didnt express my idea exactly. My firend unlocked his bl by a specilist that controling remotely his computer. Maybe he used a tool like a Hard solution tool of HTC excetpt these adb cmd shared by me. He may shared his tool to my firend PC by Usbover(not sure). He would not publish his way.So my firend payed him money. But my firend took photos secretively when he was controling his computer. He firstly rewrited CID then downgraded to 7.1.1 from 7.1.2 by adb cmd (Maybe he used the special tool among the period. Then he flashed the ROM pacaged in a new way. he made it specially .Finally he unlocked bl. And all these steps was disussed by a group people not myself. We just dont have that tool. I have the address of the special ROM .[emoji40] Hoping someone can make it

Those screenshots dont make sense on a Pixel. The CID commands do not work on a Pixel.

Okay, responding to this, there are a few problems, and some interesting things.
The initial tool you mentioned must play a hell of an important role here.
By default, no Pixel has cid/mid read/write oem commands, and I don't know of a Pixel bootloader that does. This makes it odd. He then also uses htc_fastboot to flash "zip" which is a way to flashed signed RUU's on HTC phones. It is also worth noting he flashes NDE63H which was the first 7.1 build that shipped on the Pixel (vulnerable to DePixel8 at that point).
Our current bootloader doesn't support flashing "zip" either. It does oddly have a remnant oem rebootRUU command that does absolutely nothing, but we can't flash an RUU.
It is possible that there is some leaked signed HTC internal stuff being used here, which would explain the added HTC commands, and ability to flash an RUU. The only thing this wouldn't explain is why the rollback protection didn't block this (maybe their RUU doesn't include the older bootloader).
I don't know, additional information would be necessary to conclude anything about this.
I know this,my Verizon xl has been unlocked by the method.but the skill I don't have.days ago I buy the service from a merchant.the main method is downgrade the Android to 7.1.maybe someone can hack it.
---------- Post added at 09:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:49 AM ----------
But in fact.i cannot get the img and he must have some documents to crack the cid to 111111.than it will go to htc download mode.

Where did you buy the service from?
I'm still very dubious about this.
If there was a way, I've a feeling our developers would be aware of it here.
also, why is everything labelled HTC ?

I agree.. and HTC is the phone's manufacturer.
@jcase any ideas as this may be a good way for those to unlock the bootloader?

I would try
from taptalk
It looks like the file in question can be found here: http://www.easy-firmware.com/index.php?a=browse&b=category&id=16647
My GoogleFU is strong.
I am at work and cannot download to find out what is in it, as anything else I try to do on the site is blocked. I do not think this firmware is for the Pixel, but if someone with an idea how our phone works can download the file, we can see what's inside and if it looks applicable. I find the entire thing VERY dubious, but if there's a way we can write the CID on our Verizon models, believe me, I WILL change mine.
Edit: I found the file on two other websites. All of them had it behind a paywall, but I found a different file with the same naming convention on another site that wasn't paywalled. I downloaded that file just now and will see if it is even software for our phones. I suspect this might be fore the HTC One Mini, but I'll see what's in this zip.

It's one of the process,I cannot remember all the steps
Could you please put up link to service that unlocks bootloader
So the other file that I downloaded with a similar name: G-2PIMG_M1_WHL_N70_HTC_Generic_NMF26U_user_release_Radio_Not_Specify_release_493363_2 contains a _VERY_ weird set of zip files inside. Inside atleast one of the zip files is a signed bootloader. There's an Android file that has model descriptor numbers that match the Pixel XL per what I found here: https://www.techwalls.com/google-pixel-pixel-xl-model-number-differences/
Inside the file that has the signed BL image is a file that contains what looks like a list of steps that tell it to wipe every partition on the device. I have no idea what program would be used to flash this firmware in the format it's in (the system image is chopped up into small chunks, and there are other oddities). I am posting the file in question on my Google Drive. Can @jcase look at this or someone who's got more knowledge than I do about how these phones work?
File can be downloaded here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6BaDxaggle2YndJU2Ywd3BHRkk
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS GOOD, DO NOT FLASH ANYTHING FROM THIS ZIP UNTIL WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE LOOKING AT. IF YOU BRICK YOUR DEVICE, I WILL DIE LAUGHING

i tried flashing the file you uploaded* and now my phone won't turn on.. do you know why or can you fix it for me? lmao
jokes aside, thanks for looking so far into this, especially when it could have been a malicious file.

I havent tried flashing it, I need my phone for day-to-day purposes at work so I can't risk bricking it. only made a joke because of the necessary disclaimer

Missed that joke! Lol
After looking at this a bit, I don't have a good way to figure out if this bootloader is valid, and I'm not sure I want to buy a new phone if I brick my Pixel. If this actually does work, here's what I suspect was done. The file in question (possibly the specific version this guy used, maybe even the one I downloaded) is a version of the bootloader for our phone that supports additional commands. The guy installed the other version of the bootloader, changed the CID and other information then unlocked the bootloader. If I had a pixel laying around that had a broken screen or something, I would be willing to try to do what I think needs to be done to test this. That said someone else with more expertise may know of a way to check if the bootloader image is signed or check other things. I support the Beanstalk ROM on the Nexus 6 still but have not tried to make a build for the Pixel yet. While I am capable of making that happen, I am a retard compared to @jcase and others when it comes to this stuff.
Hi
I have 2 PCs OnePlus 8 pro both are IN2020
One of them have OOS(android 10) and other have coloros (android 12)
I put the phone repairman to change their IMEI number.(Because it was imported as a used phone and was not registered in the network and did not receive services.)
Repair man change one IMEI for both , but when I check them see a problem on a phone that had coloros Android 12
On a phone that had OOS android 10 , IMEI change it was successful and when check from system status and fastboot , both IMEI changed and work without problem.
But on a phone has coloros android 12 , in system status write new IMEI but in fastboot show original IMEI, in this phone don't work SIM card
In the ,When I saw good care , IMEI in the system status not stable! A moment have IMEI and in other moment show 0 Instead of IMEI.
Repair man after change IMEI flash OOS android 10 with MSM download on the phone , but in this ROM baseband version and IMEI number don't show and just write (unknown)
Repair man use umt to do this work.
Now he can't repair phone.
I try to re flash modem.img from fastboot . But it had no effect
Please help me , How do I correct this problem?
