Windows 8 and compatible touchpad drivers - Windows 8 General

A lot of people seem to have issues with the native touchpad driver included in Windows 8. The lack of configuration is pretty annoying when you use the touchpad of your portable. Most manufactures do not have a Windows 8 driver for their touchpad yet.
Synaptics users: download the latest driver from the synaptics website
Elan users: From what I understood, Elan touchpads are actually synaptics touchpads but without the proper license. Therefore the manufactures of portables need to provide their own driver. Mostley through Elantech. As long the manufacture does not provide the driver through his download site, it is not yet supported.
However! there is a driver available! Published on x-driver. Google "elan 10.6.9.9". I've tested this driver on two Acer aspires, and one Asus netbook and it works fine.
Good luck!
(error message: Windows Shell Common Dll has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.)

Same problem here but on an HP. I downloaded latest Synaptics Drivers (sp47815) to enable multitouch on touchpad. It works, i have multitouch scrolling, but when i try to get the configuration menĂ¹ I have this error message ( Windows Shell etc.) and I can't edit all the other settings (such as the touch areas for specific behaviours or things like this).
Quite annoying...

You can try the elam driver. Hardware is the same. Aal symaptics touchpads.
Good luck

I found a working touchpad driver for ElanTech touchpads. Just double click the system tray icon to go into the settings.
Go to the Asus support site and select a recent notebook like the S46CM with Windows 7 x64 (http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=3&s=435&m=S46CM&os=&hashedid=vxr7O9ZbnWI09JJm)

Don't know how or why but after installing Elan Drivers i also installed Synaptics Drivers and now i have both and magically Synaptics Drivers works perfectly! I have Multi Touch Scrolling, Momentum, and all the features i couldn't have before!

Do these drivers give the windows 8 charm/start menu gestures because they lastest synaptics driver works but not for charm start menu gestures.

[Q] Dell XT2 Touch Click Through issue on Windows 8 [Solve mostly]

Hello-
I have the Windows 8 Preview installed on a Dell XT2. Everything about the touch screen works except I can not actually select or execute anything with my finger. I can scroll, pan and pinch to zoom and I can select and execute with my pen. Additionally, when I touch a tile it reacts as if it is about to execute, it just doesn't.
Things I have tried:
-Install latest N-Trig package (dpinst.exe from the installer package) using win 7 and win vista compatibility modes.
-Removed all drivers and performed screen firmware rollback using the tool from N-trig. This caused the screen to become completely inoperative.
I understand this is a Developer preview but I am intrigued to get it working.
My partial solution-
I downloaded the XP drivers from the n-trig support site. I extracted the files from the install and reran the DPINST.exe but that didn't work. I then uninstalled the existing drivers from Windows 8 and then reinstalled the exe right from N-Trig. I ran it in XP compatibility mode and it forced a reboot and then reran the install upon boot up. Interesting that I now have multi-touch in Windows 8 but I no longer have multi-touch in Windows 7 (I am dual booting). I am okay with that since I only use the pen in Windows 8 so I just shut touch off in the pen and touch settings. The pen works great in Windows 7 and both the pen and touch work great in Windows 8.
Thanks for the input on this issue.

some tiles don't work but things like ie, social and metro do work
as does weather, 5 and a few games
I have a dell xt2 and save from apps, everything works
Also chrome sucks for finger input, stick with IE
I'm in the same boat with this issue. Will let you know if I fix it though...
Touchsmart TX2Z
Hi all
Same result on HP Touchsmart TX2Z. Must be N-Trig drivers in Win 8.

Interestingly, the extract/DPINST method worked for me (on XT2). This morning it was working perfectly with multitouch and pen (although pen was overly sensitive).
Sadly, this evening I booted back into Win7 for the first time since installing Win8 and now touch in Win8 seems to be completely broken (even after a cold boot). It still works fine in Win7, so doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. Ah well, was nice while it lasted!
UPDATE: I disabled the "Duosense Secondary Interface" driver and reset the primary MultiTouch driver and hey presto, back in business. The multitouch is almost as smooth as a dedicated tablet (do have the odd touch recognition issue at the corners of the screen though) and I'm loving the interface actually - there's even a "Share" function like Android's when you swipe in from the right of the screen!
As long as Metro is made optional for all the traditionalists and poor saps with no touchscreen, Win8 is going to be the most popular MS product ever I reckon.

Elan trackpad drivers

Aside from waiting for official drivers, does anybody know a way to turn off "tap-to-click?" I have an Acer Aspire One, and W8 runs great, but tap-to-click is a pain. I have installed official W7 drivers, and everything works great, except when I try to change tap-to-click in the mouse options I get an error.
"Windows Shell Common Dll has stopped working."
Any ideas?
On X-drivers you can find the driver release: elan 10.6.9.9 which is fully compatible. Or first hit in google when querying "elan 10.6.9.9"

Make sure you have the proper driver active in device manager. Manually remove the ps2 embedded driver. It is working on both my laptops and a friends one.

Odd the only driver I have under my Mouse is "ELAN PS/2 Port Input Device", but still when I try and load the settings to enable two finger tap right clicking it get the command shell error - this is legit version of win 8 and the 10.6.9.9
Just checked something. On my aspire one , when I click the taskbar icon it goes directley to the touchpad config and no windows device dialog is opened. I will post some screens of my config later this evening.

Going through the trackpad icon just leads to the main mouse control panel, no matter if I left or right click on it. Tried with the driver you just posted, stock Asus drivers, and stock Samsung ELAN drivers. All do the same thing and crash with the "common dll has stopped working" error.
Anyone know if there are any new drivers that have been released? Since we are nearing the official launch - in just a few days.

Asus X53(Sv) / K53(Sv) touchpad drivers for Windows 8 (EDTWare ElanTech Smart Pad)

Hi
I'm a Dreamspark Premium member so I can already upgrade to Windows 8 for free. I installed it earlier this week and I love it. My Asus X53Sv works fine on Windows 8 except for two things:
1. The function keys
They actually work. But it could be better. Windows 8 shows a nice little popup when you press the volume keys on a keyboard. It works when I connect my Logitech USB keyboard but the popup doesn't show up when I use the volume keys (with Fn) on my notebook. In the metro interface I don't see anything and in the desktop interface I see the same popup as in Windows 7. It would be nice if it just worked with the default Windows 8 interface and popup.
2. The touchpad
EDIT: found a working driver, not needed anymore

Ok, so I first tried the latest ElanTech driver. Still the same problem: the configuration utility crashes.
Then I tried the latest Synaptics driver: it doesn't really detect my touchpad so it doesn't let me configure it. It says there is a touchpad, but it's not a synaptics one.
Ok I have an ASUS N53SN and I have gotten the drivers working (charm bar swipe etc...)
But when I press a key on my keyboard I have this 1-2 seconds delay, which is hell'a annoying, and I figured out I need to remove
palm tracking for it to get fixed. But when I open my ELAN settings they look like this: http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/8780/elan.png
How do I fix that?
To get the volume OSD working in Windows 8, you have to install the Keyboard Filter driver and the ATK package from the ASUS website.

Windows 8 left edge swipe gesture does not work. (FIXED)

I downloaded the latest synaptics drivers 16.2.16.2 and a lot of things work right edge swipe, top edge swipe but not left edge swipe. Every version of synaptics I tried didn't work with left edge. Anyone know why?
The problem has been fixed by this guy "smjameel93" There a registry file that needs editing here is the download you just import this to your registry after removing .txt at the end of file.

You're very lucky to have Synaptics. My ALPS trackpad doesn't even have a Windows 8 driver now or later. I'm forced to install the Windows 7 ones. Anyways, what is the brand of your PC? I suggest you downloading Sony's drivers. http://www.sony-asia.com/support/download/520553/product/vpcsa36gg
You can install Synaptics drivers for other touchpads. I tried it on a different computer, it worked. But it has Windows 7.

My laptop is HP
I don't think the driver is out yet. I have an HP Probook 4530s with a Synaptics touchpad. Searching online I find a section on Synaptics website detailing the Windows 8 Gesture Suite but there are no download links or user reports anywhere. Therefore I think we just have to wait a little longer for the drivers to come out.
see http://www.synaptics.com/solutions/touch-solutions/sgs and http://blog.synaptics.com/?p=85
Hopefully it'll be along soon.
16.2.16.2 is exactly the one I had tried as well. There is nothing newer. You'll get right swipe and that's just about it until they release the new drivers.
I've also tried probably 10 different versions of drivers, including a beta Lenovo Win8 Synaptics ultranav driver. Didnt work.

16.2.16.2 seems to be the very last one. But actually the left edge works on my Envy14, however it doesn't on my Vaio VPC Z1. i suppose it's because the Envy has one of those big touchpad whereas the Z1 Touchpad is still the small one. Anyway even with 16.2.10 12 driver that came in august, the left swipe still works on the Envy

So left swipe not working is because of the touchpad area size?
The latest one available from the Synaptics site works. Left swipe, right swipe, top swipe, etc.

Some people are saying it has to do with the larger area touchpads --> newer laptops seems to have a bigger touchpad, perhaps the option is cut off because of the smaller pads?

Mine isn't big. It is around 10 cm wide. But I don't think it can be considered as small, so I don't understand. Maybe a solution or a workaround could be find.

[Q] Will Windows 7 driver and ccc will work on windows 8?

I am using ati mobility radeon 5650 on a vaio VPCEB46FG and running windows 7 home premium.
When i checked with the Official Windows 8 upgrade tool from microsoft it said that ccc have to be reinstalled, but it showed that device is compatible. The problem is i cannot use the drivers provided by the AMD bcoz of switchable graphics, have to rely on sony for that driver for windows8 compatibility, and they are not releasing the drivers.
So will the drivers for windows 7 and catalyst control center work on windows 8.

I had problems with that on the CP and RP, id might be possible to force the AMD drivers to accept your graphics card as one of their own.
I don't have time just not to go through it all but basically if you look at the amd drivers, you will see an INF file with a list of supported devices and their device IDs, essentially you will replace the device ID of a similar card with your device ID, uninstall the drivers you have, and when you install the AMD ones it should think your device is now supported....
In Theory

ok, we know it is a AMD/ATI chipset, do you know what its based on?
Download the latest AMD drivers for win 8
When you run it, it will copy all the guff it needs to a folder, for example
C:\AMD\AMD_Catalyst_12.9_Beta\Packages\Drivers\Display
you should have two folders
W8_INF
W86A_INF
one is 32bit one is 64bit
lets take the 32bit one, the same applies to 64 anyway
you will see 3 INF files, these are for different versions of windows, id change all three but you should be able to get away with changing
CE146933.INF which is Win 8 version
this file is EPIC in size, the first bit you are looking for looks like this
(This is an example, until I know which card you have I cant be sure which to use)
"%AMD68B8.1%" = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68B8&SUBSYS_30001002
Note the bold black on the left and the bold red on the right, the red one is a unique ID code for a piece of hardware, the bold black code is a number that is tied to that hardware ID and assigns it a Name, the Green is the important bit and tells it what it install. In short, if that hardware ID was detected it would load the driver settings for the device "AMD68B8.1" using settings ati2mtag_Evergreen
if you look at the very bottom of the INF you can see a list of what those codes mean, in this example it translates to
AMD68B8.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series"
What is happening at the moment is that the driver is loading, and not detecting the hardware ID, because its not listed it fails to install
what we want to do is to fool the driver in to thinking that your hardware ID IS in the driver.
in theory its simple, in practice there can be a number of things that stop it working, like getting CCC working may be an issue but there you have it, that's the basics of what you can try, it may not work though so don't hold your breath
I had to jump through a crazy number of hoops to get AMD's drivers working on my notebook's 5650 with switchable graphics - and it's unfortunately all because AMD insist on running pre-installation checks. The drivers work, but they don't let you use them.
It eventually worked when updated my notebook from 7 to the RP, and chose to keep drivers installed during the process. I then reinstalled CCC, as the update wiped it out. My driver version is 8.692.1.0, and is dated 22/01/2010.
Switchable graphics works, but I can't right click on the desktop to open the program. I need to run CCC, and then navigate to switchable graphics.
I highly recommend this approach of using switchable graphics - if it works for you. AMD drivers for this are an unmitigated disaster, and any attempts to get a better situation may leave you worse off. Expect lots and lots of 'Install was successful' messages - even though nothing was actually done at all.
If your Windows 7 GPU drivers are working in Windows 8, you'll see the following in Device Manager:
-When GPU is disabled, "Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator HD" appears in Device Manager.
-When using the GPU, "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650" and the above Intel graphics appear under Device Manager.
Remember that your Intel drivers must be working too - they're part of the switchable graphics. If you see 'engineering sample' or anything next to the driver name, then something is probably wrong.
Anyway, this is just confirming that W7 drivers do work perfectly, if you bypass the OS version check.
If you manage to get W8 drivers to have switchable graphics, that's excellent.
I'll be happily updating my notebook to the full W8 release in about 2 weeks. I am expecting great pain.
The CCC I used was the CCC pro off of their website. I ran all the apps in w7 compatibility mode. Took about 1-2 days. I'm running a never released ati 4600 series so I designed my drivers.... it was very fun
