I'm an idiot and forgot to unlock my bootloader when I got my n7, and now I don't feel like reinstalling everything if I do haha. has anyone figured out how to do this yet?

root without unlocking so I can install titanium before I unlock?

There's a way to use adb to back up everything with fastboot, which I don't have the link to right now, but after you back everything up, you just unlock the bootloader and then restore your backup.

Here is the guide:

Backup new Nexus S

I sold my iPhone 4 today and bought a brand new nexus s. I'm not new to android though, I used to own a nexus one before iPhone 4.
My question is that I want to install custom roms on it, but I might want to restore it back to original factory settings in case I want to return it to best buy. How can I backup my phone so that best buy would take the phone back without questions?
I saw a thread to root the phone without unlocking the bootloader. Is that what I should do? Any help is appreciated!

Just root and do a nandroid backup. If you use rom manager to install the custom recovery you can just use it to so the backup.

Go to the Samsung nexus s android development section. Look for the thread that begins with Odin 1.81... bookmark that thread. That thread will help you flash completely back to stock. And always make sure you relock your bootloader.

The only advantage of not unlocking the bootloader is to avoid a full wipe of your internal storage such as pics, music etc. However custom roms or apps may have stability issues without an unlocked bootloader. No harm in unlocking the bootloader because you can always lock it again. Just make sure you back up any files you may want to keep.

I agree that the only advantage to not unlocking the bootloader is to avoid a full wipe and loss of all data.
I'm curious if you can point to an example of any current existing ROM that displays issues because the bootloader is locked... if so, I need to add that information to the non-unlock method instructions.
Sorry I don't. I was just quoting one of the root guides in here. But then again there's always that IF. Now that I think about it, unlocking the bootloader is to be able to install root and a custom recovery. If you can do that without unlocking the bootloader then you should still be golden. Don't see why a rom or app would be dependent on the bootloader. Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah, we've found no reason to HAVE-TO unlock it yet. Just to be clear, I wasn't challenging you, just looking for anything I might need to add to the guide on doing it without the unlock. I already have a caveat that it might be an issue for something, but don't know what something could be.
Anyways, if you're a fresh out of the box phone, no problems unlock method, since you have no data to lose in the wipe. For late-comers, the no unlock method spares them that data wipe. The beauty of it is that you can root and install titainium or other backup software without wiping the phone if you already have data on it, and then if needed you can always unlock it and re-root, and then restore your wiped data. Best of both worlds for some.
Pretty much exactly what happened to me Distorted loop, Very thankfull for that non wipe root method, definately saved my ass as i had a good play with the phone before getting it to a PC for backup/rooting.
I am going to swap my device for another tommorrow to confirm if my reboot issue is even remotely hardware related. So i will have 30 mins with no nexus s ...s'gonna kill me as i love this lil thing (even with my calling problems).
Looking forward to a nice stable nexus, and then i'll try out some of the mods and roms (still on stock for now)

[Q] Recovery options for new user

Hi, just bought myself a new Motorola Atrix phone and i'd like to know what are my backup options?
Tried stock recovery but it shows only wipe+reboot options. There are no backup/restore features i'd expect from recovery system.
If i flash CWM, how can i uninstall it and get back to stock one if i happen to have return it to service shop someday (god forbid)?
Thanks

please read the noob thread at the top of the forum, it will explain everything you need to know about unlocking your bootloader, installing a custom recovery, and then flashing new ROMs.
im very familiar with unlocking bootloader, rooting, flashing recovery and such. That topic doesn't say anything about going back to stock recovery if i remember correctly. Correct me if im wrong.

if you've already done all your research, then you would know that you can reflash a stock 2.3.4 sbf file with RSDlite to turn your phone back into completely stock.
that is, if you've already done all your research.. i mean, it's not like you can google these questions or anything
heh, so flashing SBF will erase CWM recovery right?

There is no stock recovery.... CWM does not come with your phone, you installed it. And who cares if you have a recovery on the phone and have to take it back?? You think the jack holes at AT&T even know what recovery is, let alone how to enter recovery mode... they all have iPhones.
Just flash a fruitcake if you have to take it back, and be done with it.
OBTW, since you unlocked your bootloader, you're unlocked forever... how you going to hide that?

it will turn your phone completely stock again. it will even 'relock' your bootloader for you. just be careful, and only use it as a last resort since RSDlite always has a chance to brick your device permanently.

which is why relock was surrounded by apostrophes. although, technically if you reflash the stock .sbf it takes away the pudding files in the bootloader, which is what allows us to flash custom recovery and stuff. have you ever reflashed a stock 2.3.4 sbf and then tried to install CWM through fastboot? it just doesn't work. the fuse in your device may be blown, but without those pudding files injected into the bootloader, you might as well have a locked device.

your questions aren't making any sense. you can't install CWM without unlocking the bootl.oader, so if there's no unlocked text when you start the phone up, you're not gonna be able to do anything with CWM.
and it's already been established that if you flash a .sbf file, it will give you a stock recovery again.

Dude... are you done crying. Man up, grab your sack and stop worrying about what may happen if you have to return your phone.
Why do you want to install CWM Recovery... I'm assuming to flash a ROM... well guess what genius, you have to unlock your bootloader first... which means if these super scientists who work only at your local phone store, want to know if you've tampered with your phone, they're gonna know.

i just wanted to know if flashing SBF erases already installed CWM. If i have CWM, its quite obvious bootloader's unlocked, at least to me it would.
My question was inspired by situation where i might need to return phone under warranty to service shop and hide that it has been unlocked and screwed with custom ROM's as much as i can.
There are some strange reboots/shutdowns which wasnt paid so phone is going back with hidden traces of being total geek.
Clearer?

Let me more precise with you.... Since you have unlocked your bootloader, you have burnt a fuse that can not replaced, short of cracking open the phone, finding the fuse, and fixing it (if that's even possible). So, if they are paying that close of antention to notice that you have CWM Recovery installed, they most likely would also notice that the bootloader fuse is gone, therefore who have tampered with your phone.... whether you flash a sbf file it not.

[Q] Root without wiping?

Since I was smart and forgot to unlock my N7 before doing anything, I'm in a bit of a predicament. I don't want to wipe everything off my N7, I have game progress, lot of apps, etc. I looked in the dev forum, but didn't see anything. I just need a root to throw TiBu on there. Not sure if I missed it, misunderstood something, or if I'm boned and just have to deal with lost data or no root. This is my first nexus, and on other devices, there's always been root without wipe. Is that just something effort isn't put into on a nexus since unlock is so easy?

As far as I know, no, there isn't a way. To get CWM on the Nexus 7, you have to unlock the bootloader which deletes all user information for security purposes. I made the same mistake, but it didn't take too long to get it back to where it was (I mean, we only got them less than a week ago!).

Bootloader unlock without wipe only comes about via some kind of exploit/hack. Such discoveries are unpredictable.
The first one I saw for the GN was about a two months ago (though I won't pretend to have seen everything).
I suggest just biting the bullet now rather than waiting potentially months later.
Couldn't you just backup the /sdcard/Android folder that has some (if not all) of your game data? I'm a little rusty on my ADB commands but you might be able to pull it from the system partition, although I doubt it..

The "Nexus Root Toolkit" lets you back up before unlocking:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
Also, I believe you don't need root to run AirDroid (search the store).
I suppose you could see if any root exploits work to get root without unlocking the bootloader no harm in trying a few, use backup then unlock the bootloader. Not sure if any root exploits work with jellybean though.

[Q] Rooted, but nothing got wiped, did I miss a step?

I rooted my phone yesterday, and every guide I've read said that unlock would wipe the data, but nothing on my phone was wiped. When I was finished, all of my apps, and data on my sd card, and settings were still there and working just fine.
I'm just wondering, did I miss a step? or is this something new in the latest version of JB or CWM? Should I be concerned?
I documented the steps I took here: https://gist.github.com/4247542
Thanks.
Actually, did u unlock the bootloader?
This is normally the first step and this wipes your data
Interesting. The non wiping of data during bootloader unlocking was heard of first from the play store version of the galaxy nexus. Did you only unlock the bootloader prior to rooting or have you done an unlock before already?

Rooting a phone does not wipe data. Unlocking the bootloader is what wipes the data, it does a factory wipe of everything. A phone does not have to be unlocked to root or to install a custom recovery and ROM but it does have to be unlocked to install a custom kernel.
Edit: I should have added that currently there is no way to root this device without unlocking the bootlaoder as it requires an exploit which no ones has found yet, or is looking for that I know of. It could have been that the phone was already unlocked before you got it. Tt should tell you when you boot into fastboot if its unlocked.
Yes I did an unlock and it did not wipe.

Updating with unlocked bootloader

Hello im on stock 4.2.2 and im rooted with an unlocked bootloader. Will i have to relock it once the new 5.0 klp update comes out to get it or will it still work fine? I know theres still a while until the update but id like to be prepared
Depends, if you want the KLP version from google, you'll need to go back to stock and lock the bootloader.
However, there's a 99.99999999% chance someone here at XDA will have a KLP rom before google officially releases one for our N10s.
Ok thanks but can i keep it rooted or do i need to unroot aswell?

OK so I heard some rumors about a jellybean update to 4.3 soon. I really don't want to lose all my data by flashing a stock image once it comes out. Is there a way to relock the boot loader without losing data? And if not is there a way to backup all my data and restore it afterwards. I tried using wugs toolkit to do this but the problem is it only backs up the main user and not the secondary ones. Any suggestions would be appreciated thank you.

I believe unlocking/locking the boot loader will in fact wipe all data. So you'd have to manually handle the backup/restore if you don't want to lose the data.
I'd try something like TB to backup and restore. I usually start from scratch again as I've read restoring app data can cause issue under certain circumstances. YMMV...

hmm, from reading that apps description it gives me the impression a bootloader could be locked again w/out wiping - its just then when you would want to re-unlock that it would re-wipe.
right now Im unlocked but stock everything else. I think I will see what happens just trying the upgrade w/out relocking (again because Im pretty sure that's the same as the .2 I just did.)
if anyone can confirm any of this it would be welcomed

To get any Google OTA you do not need to re-lock the bootloader. You might need to flash the stock recovery prior to install the OTA.
At least this is what I did. Of course, to be safe I installed "Bootunlocker", "Voodo OTA Rootkeeper", and "SuperSU".
SuperSU gives permission to keep your phone root when you flash stock recovery.
After you re-install a custom recovery you need, prior to reboot, to wipe "Dalvik-Cache".
The long wait can start
@gunner1937 OK thanks. But where can I get stock recovery?
