Ok, so I just found out that I'm going to China for 5 weeks in May. I've been doing a bunch of research but thought I'd ask some questions here.
Will my Bell Atrix work in China with one of their sim cards?
What is the best chinese tel/ company to use for Zhengzhou China?
Will my gmail/google maps, docs, etc work behind the great firewall?
How can I ensure I have access to online services? Sshtunnel?
What is the best/fastest service for ssh?
Is there a free way to do it from my home computer?
I also just bought the Moto Keyboard in hopes that I can survive without a laptop and only my Atrix. I'm pretty confident it will work for everything I need. I plan on setting up a ubuntu img just in case but any suggestions for replacing my laptoop? Currently using kingsoft and box.net as I have heard dropbox is blocked in china and worried about docs working.
Any other China travel tips are appreciated....

MB860 can be used directly in China SIM card, China Mobile Network in China is comparatively good. Mailbox at home is generally not shield, except for some sites, such as the faceBook
The use of translation tools translation, sorry
of course you can use any google service in china, like google maps and gmail.but you cannot access to facebook and twitter.
i think you can choose china unicom when you travel in china.it provides 3g service.
Thanks, so do I not need to purchase a Vpn service?
My Facebook messages get forwarded to my gmail, when I reply in gmail, it replies to the fb message, will this work there too?
Which is better for Zhengzhou, China Mobile or China Unicorn?
What is a good translation program that will work on my atrix there?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but China uses 900mhz for 3G. If I'm not mistaken the Bell Atrix does not include that frequency. If that's the case the Atrix will work in China, but only on their 2G network. I don't know if Bell has the quadband 3G version.

3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
That means it should work right?

There are 2 versions listed on gsmarena. The one that Bell used to carry is the same as the AT&T version.
It's this one.
http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_atrix_4g-3708.php
Crap!
Does that mean I can't get 3g on my atrix there? Is there any way to check on my phone which version it is or which networks it is capable of? Or is it a mute point since it is a Bell Atrix?

No you won't be able to get 3G in China. The Bell version is identical to the AT&T version. I don't know if this version has the 900mhz band in it. If it does, maybe rooting it will release that frequency. This is something I'm not familiar with. I know some of the Motorola dumbphones were capable of this.
That is not what I keep seeing in everything I read, I don't really see a difference listed. See http://www.wirelesswave.ca/bell-phones-and-smartphones/phone.asp?Phone=173

> Will my Bell Atrix work in China with one of their sim cards?
If your atrix is sim unlocked, sim cards in China will work.
> What is the best chinese tel/ company to use for Zhengzhou China?
If you need 3G internet access, China Unicom will be better. Pick one of
their 3G plan. Their network is HSPA/HSPA+, which is supported on my
AT&T Atrix. AFAIK China Telecom's networks, CDMA EV-DO(3G) or CDMA
1X(2.5G) and China Mobile's network TD-SCDMA(3G) are not supported on
Atrix. Correct me if I'm wrong.
All 2G GSM networks should work on Atrix.
> Will my gmail/google maps, docs, etc work behind the great firewall?
GMail works, but it's much slower than you expect. Sometimes attachments
will not download, while other times, the web UI does not load at
all. Google docs is the same story. All in all, don't rely on it unless
you have VPN or ssh proxy. According to Murphy's law, the service will
be down when you most need it. Note that google search is also kind of
half blocked in GFW. It works on a few tries, then all result links and
later search will fail. Either "connection is reset" or other errors
will shown in your browser.
Note that I don't know ssh works on stock ROM unrooted device. I guess a
global ssh proxy at least require rooting your device. On the other
hand, VPN works out of the box.
> How can I ensure I have access to online services? Sshtunnel?
Android has built-in support for VPN. Using VPN you can access all
online services, like youtube, face book. For youtube, you need WIFI to
have good network speed. 3G in China is kind of slow. When VPN is
enabled, it's slower further.
> What is the best/fastest service for ssh?
I'm not using ssh. For VPN, Witopia works here.
> Is there a free way to do it from my home computer?
For ssh tunnel, yes. If you have your home computer is turned on for
24x7 and auto reboot on power failure, it can work as a server. Beware
that home computers usually have limited upload bandwidth, which is bad
if you want to watch youtube etc. To support ssh tunnel/proxy, run an
ssh server, like openssh-server. It's very easy if you are running Linux
like OS.

If you are going to purchase anything from online shopping website in
China, a laptop or VM with windows OS is a must. Because most Banks and
checkout service support only Windows + IE browser + ActiveX controls.

Dropbox is blocked. No experience with box.net.
My first post here. Hope that helps.
Thanks! Very helpful for a first post!
I hope you don't mind clarifying a few things:
First, I am rooted unlocked, and running cm9. I'm considering going back to blur for webtop but......ugh ....
Edit: sorry read your post wrong...I will be mostly in Zhengzhou city so I'm hoping that I'll have pretty steady 3g access.
Do you think it is worth using a the SSH?
I do have my Canadian banking app (TD) on my cell, will that work there? Are you saying I need a windows os for normal banking use there? Wouldnt Firefox on a Ubuntu .img work?
Thanks again.

Dude, quit freaking out! No matter how much you plan you will never cover every eventuality that might or might not happen to you. Its fine out here, dont worry, there are shops for everything you might need and alot of what you will need you will only find out when are are in a position that you need it.
They use mobile technology alot more here than in the west, so SIM cards and pay as you go data plans are the norm, the two big providers are China Mobile and China Unicom, but only unicom uses 3g networks, China mobile is still on Edge. But look, dont worry there are alot of internet cafes around if you need to use the internet desperately. Dont be one of those people that sit on a mountain top or go to a tiny village and complain that there is no starbucks with wifi...
If you are here for business then your business will help you, if not... then kick back, enjoy the adventure and savour some untouched cultures....
ps. oh yeah i would invest in a vpn for those fiddly sites that they dont like you to visit, do this before you come out as the signup pages for vpn services are also blocked.
I do not know exactly where you will be, but in all my Asian travels I have found that free WIFI is very prevalent in the larger (modern) cities. I have never bothered to buy a G3 data sim yet have always been well in touch.
Do you not have access to a corporate VPN back home? That would handle all the blocking issues.
I just came back from a 3 week trip in Thailand where I was using my Atrix with a lapdock. Never really had any issues. The worse case was when I needed Windoze, had to VPN to corporate, then VPN to my office, to my notebook with an XP VM running on it and RDE in. That was slow, but usable.
BTW, maybe I have bad Karma, but I have always had scattered issues with DNS servers in Asia (regardless of my device). 8.8.8.8 is your friend,

If you can install or have installed a system level ssh proxy, then ssh
is not bad at all. Like I said, this option/feature is not built into
the stock ROM, because an ssh proxy would require root privilege to
modify routing table.
Someone with more experience with root device and ssh can guide you how
to use your remote SSH server as a global encrypted proxy.
> I do have my Canadian banking app (TD) on my cell, will that work

Yes.
> Are you saying I need a windows os for normal banking use

No. What I mean is if you want to purchase something from online
shopping websites in China like taobao.com, 360buy.com etc, their
checkout usually support only Windows OS. Unlike paypal or simple credit
card checkout which usually work on any device/browser. Purchasing from
amazon.com, or any foreign shopping sites will not be affected.
Your normal online banking will not be affected at all. I haven't heard
of any foreign bank website being blocked in China. Android browser or
your bank's android app should both work.
So would the app DroidVPN be good, or teamviewer?

Right now I have no problem tethering off my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile with an unlimited plan, whether on my tablet, laptop, or desktop. The Nexus 4 looks pretty nice, but my concern - since T-Mobile is also carrying it, does that mean it'll have the capability to block tethering without the proper plan, even using the Play unlocked version? Does the T-Mobile one even have anything confirmed other than a higher price? Apparently 42Mbps speeds are confirmed on the Play version through the Google press release and the Play Store specs are wrong.
I know its all speculation at this point since nobody has the phone, but that'd be a huge factor as to whether I sell my Galaxy Nexus now and go back to my HTC G2 until I get the Nexus 4 (while I can still get a decent amount for it), or just get my high-performance fix with the Nexus 10 (which I'd be planning to get regardless after selling my Toshiba Thrive).
If you can root it, you can tether w/o being charged a fee. True story.

How exactly can you root "wrong" like you're saying? Fact is, I've gotten the "get a hotspot plan" pages when tethering to my laptop/desktop numerous times while I had my G2, running both CM7 and CM9. Maybe T-Mobile is just more stringent about sniffing out tethering?

No, no. My VZW LTE tethered from my Gnex is more reliable than my Charter cable internet, in fact I use it as a backup when Charter goes out. (which is a few time a month.) If you don't have data it is because of your carrier. And when I said doing it wrong I meant tethering not rooting. There are many many threads on how to properly tether. When done properly tethering works 100% of the time, not having data to tether is a different issue altogether.

It seems to be pretty well established that T-Mobile is packet-sniffing to detect unauthorized tethering. It appears that they detect the User Agent string if you are using Internet Explorer or Chrome (but apparently not Firefox, I imagine because Android Firefox is able to pretend to be the desktop version with one tap). Changing the User Agent string for your browser or using a VPN tunnel circumvents the detection, and non-browser access (SSH, SMTP, etc.) is not checked, either. All that's independent of whether you are rooted or not.
just install a user agent add on or extention on your laptop. Firefox and chrome both have them, i set mine to nexus 7 user agent and the tether blocking pages go away for good.

IMEIs are assigned in blocks. Even if they don't have access to the info from the manufacturer, (they almost certainly do), they can still figure it out. If, for example, they've sold Nexus 4s with IMEIs 1001 and 1003, and you log onto their network with 1002, they can draw a pretty solid conclusion.
The hard part is figuring out if you're tethering or not, which requires invasive packet sniffing if the phone itself doesn't report tethering (that's how they track tethering with branded devices). I don't believe, based on my quick research, that T-Mo is sniffing everyone's packets. Which means they probably aren't watching you unless you are streaming 20GB a month. They are tracking user agents on branded phones, it seems.
Okay. I've searched XDA and Google, and even posted in another thread here but never got an answer. I am leaving VZW for T Mobile. I am expecting my Nexus 4 to arrive this coming week. I plan on rooting the N4 pretty much as soon as I get it. I have also read lots of posts regarding difficulties tethering a laptop to an N4 on Tmo.
My question is:
Will I be able to tether (wifi or BT) my N7 to my Tmo N4? If so, will i have to use any special apps?
I have had success using PdaNet+ on my VZW phones to tether my N7, but I need to know if Tmo will flag me for the N7 like they do with others for their laptops. My daily usage includes the Slacker Radio and NetFlix apps. i also have OnLive, but didn't typically use it that much due to high latency issues in the Lynnhaven area of Virginia Beach. If absolutely needed, I am open to the VPN option, but I would need instruction as to how to do that (like do I set up the VPN on the N7 or the N4?) but I would prefer, if possible, to just tether normally.
Thanks in advance. Btw, please no "it works for me" posts. If you're going to answer, please provide relevant information(i.e. HOW it works for you). Thanks again!

i'm on Orange UK (aka. EE now also incorporating T-Mobile) and couldn't originally tether either my dell NB or playbook -- that is, they could connect to the N4 wifi hotspot but no data transfer nor internet access was possible. this was despite my being able to tether successfully on my old HD2 using the same account.
turned-out i needed to phone Orange and have them activate tethering on the phone, i received an "service update" text and restarted, since when it's worked a treat on both devices. there was no charge for this and i was told that orange imposes no restrictions on tethering outside of the existing account data cap, in my case 1GB.
t-mobile may operate a different policy.

Truly Unlimited blocks the tethering feature from being added to your account. However, since the Nexus 4 is a stock device and doesn't connect to the network using the tethering APN while tethering is enabled, you should be able to tether any device to your Nexus 4 without issue.
Sv: [Q] Tethering a Nexus 7 to a Nexus 4 on T Mobile Truly Unlimited
Yes you can tether to the Nexus 4 on T-Mo. I don't it a lot but I used to the tether to the Nexus 4 a couple times when no WiFi was available.
Skickat från min Nexus 4
Well that's why I'm asking the question. There is no WIFI at my work so without tethering to my N4, I will have no way to use my N7 online. Like I said in the OP. I watch Netflix everyday during down time and stream Slacker Radio while I'm working. I work security on 9.5 hour shifts. Netflix and Slacker just make the day go by.
Just for anyone wondering, I have had no issues tethering my Nexus 7 with my Nexus 4. Been doing it for a couple weeks now with no issues. Actually, with Verizon 4G, my data speeds would fall of rapidly as the day went on, dropping down below 1 Mbps by noon. With T-Mobile's HSPA+, I have been getting between 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps down and around 2 Mbps up consistently all day every day.

From what I have read throughout my searches on XDA and Google, it seems that as long as you are tethering another mobile device, i.e. a tablet, they don't seem to be able to tell. I have also read some accounts saying not to use "desktop mode"in your browser. I have been using Chrome, Firefox, Netflix, OnLive, and even BitTorrent (small files so far) with no issues so far.

If anyone else has had different experiences with similar usage, and only concerning tethering tablets and other mobile devices via the Nexus 4, please post them for others (and me) to learn from.
I was just told by an at&t representative that I am not allowed to tether with my unlimited data plan. There must be a way around their detection system. I have been searching and saw some people say that the pdanet+ app works.
So does anyone here have experience with tethering on at&t and not being detected?
Its a crap shoot. Nobody outside AT&T really knows how their detection system works. I got caught because I let my daughter tether her iPhone, so it was just too obvious for ATT. Even if you use the pdanet thingamggie, if you tether your apple Mac, iPhone, or Windows machine, they can easily tell you are tethering.
On the other hand, I have tethered my Android tablets, downloaded tablet centric apps, even my Samsung Chrome book and they haven't noticed, so far, knock on wood.

I've tethered to other phones without an issue. I will not attach a computer to my phone as it would use way too much data. At&t is looking for data usage and browser information. Not saying that at&t won't figure it out, but only using mobile devices helps.

I get AT&T WiFi at work which is really helpful considering the crappy connection I would get otherwise. It didn't occur to me till just now that it will no longer work on the Nexus.
I just grabbed the wispr apk from my Note 4 but I'm not really sure if that will work and still haven't activated my phone

I'm on an AT&T corporate plan without tethering and it worked out of the box for me. Looks like there's no tethering block on this one.
Oh I meant the app that is used to connect to att WiFi Hotspots but that's also good to know

I updated the subject - also tried installing the apk that I remember I needed when I had my S3 and used custom ROMs. It refuses to install on the Nexus

Might be a corporate only thing. I just tried it and it's disabled

Well, that failed miserably
Looks like the dedicated router we have at work uses Wispr for authentication. There is no way for me to get this work without rooting my device while at the same time finding an apk that I can install. The latter is probably not possible till AT&T gets the phone, which not sure if it will happen.
Oh well, it'll make it easier to leave AT&T eventually if I get used to not having wifi at work
This is the only thing I could find asking the question. Is there an APK or app in the Play store that will let my Nexus 6P connect to the free basic ATT Wifi hotspots that come with my plan? ATT branded phones can automatically connect to the free hotspots that ATT offers. I don't know how to make that happen on my 6P. Anyone know? Thanks!
