I currently run Flexreaper and am going to upgrade to the latest "extreme" edition. I either have to upgrade the bootloader to ICS or use a special kernel. So, should I go ahead and upgrade the bootloader? What is the benefit to doing so? What is the easiest method to do so (is it Civato's in the dev section)?
Thanks for your help!
You'll gain ability to flash any new ICS and JB based ROM. HC bootloader supporting ROMs is a dying species and sooner or later you will need to upgrade anyway. You also gain unlocked fastboot access with the ability to boot or flash any kernel or recovery image (there is no checksum checking).
And there's multiboot -- you can basically run two roms beside each other or run a full debian install for added features (things like LibreOffice and VLC) at native speed (chroot is slooow).

No, you can't. You can boot two kernels, not two ROMs.

I'm running the newest Flexreaper (for HC bootloader). I have the HC bootloader and I'm just wondering what the benefits would be of switching to the ICS bootloader.
Does to ICS bootloader resolve any ICS ROM issues (eg. screen flicker in the browser)?
Well I don't think the ROM issues have something to do with tne bootloader... . The bootloader is responsible for booting not for browser etc. ... .
By the way I'm on HC bootloader too, running tegraowners ICS and FLEXREAPER. But now I'm thinking about updating too. For the aromainstaller on tegraowners ICS v168 and on FLEXREAPER extreme the ICS bootloader seems to bring advantages. For me the first evident advantages... .

Ask yourself , why would there be any need in ICS boot loader if ICS worked correctly on HC boot loader?
ICS rom is just smoother , no boot glitches, and you can always recovery with a unlocked boot loader something not possible with HC boot loader.
So you want ICS , do it the correct way and don't be a chicken.
I do not want to disagree with you at all!
But just want to add that the first time the ICS bootloader problem appeared was when the first ICS OTA and leaks came. It was and still is possible to run the best ICS ROMs (means yours and THOR`s) with the HC bootloder. And upgrade later...

WOW, calling out Civato on his own comment!! Well the joke is on you because Civato no longer supports the HC Bootloader and you are stuck with an old version. Bight the bullet and upgrade already. There is a new tool out there that does all the work for you. I believe it is called afterota.zip or something like that. Look for it in the development section. Its time to drink the ICS koolaid for real this time.
This tool afterota is actually the reason I`m here!!
I know and use Civatos and Thors great ROMs since HC times but from other forums. Of course I follow threads and learn from xda but I just subscribed because of this tool
So this means I will upgrade of course.
I saw many posts of panic becouse of the bootloader hype but at that time it wasn`t really necessary, then a lot of posts about problems due to messed up installations... .
So I waited had really no problems on Flexreaper or Tegraowners and in the meantime was afterota developed by gersma

PS.
And do not let me call a chicken any more ;-) I`m on the new bootloader now!
trust me (or Civato) thats the reason he uses the "chicken" statement , theres no need to be afraid , you can always get back what you had (as long as you followed the directions) , most people had problems (and still do) because they dont follow the directions !
I want to root my acer tablet because I'm tired of all of the garbage that is on the tablet. I want to know which ROM runs the smoothest on the A 500 and what roms people have used and why. Looking for 4.2 build.
I like LIGHTSPEED 4.8 the best, it's ICS and stripped DOWN. lots of bloatware taken out...IF you want to goto to JELLYBEAN 4.1.1 or 4.2.1 beta 3, you can try those..but as far as i know ACER A500 NEVER put out past ICS, so a JB rom is ANOTHER Tablet BASED ROM, it will work, but not made spacifically for acer, has other programs on it.. either way won't hurt. You'll have to have UNLOCKED ICS BOOTLoader for most of them...
LIGHTSPEED 4.8 has both kernels on it.. it checks for HC or ICS bootloader, then installs correct kernel (boot.img)
some info here on post #5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2026591
some say manually install of bootloader is easier..so maybe manuallly install is better to try. instead of APX method.
If you use lightspeed 4.8 , on his page u can use OC kernel and goto 1504 MHZ, i use it and create my own newer ACER A500 based rom.
ROMS are here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1136
I'm sure there's a million other threads like this, but the Iconia development world moves too fast for me to keep up, and for those older threads to maintain relevance. So I'm wondering what the latest and greatest ROMs are for the Iconia A500, and better yet a good guide on how to get it going.
Here's what I have going on right now:
1. It's running stock ICS (4.0.3, image Acer_AV041_A500_RV05RC01_PA_CUS1) applied through the OTA update.
2. It is rooted.
3. It has stock recovery, stock everything besides being rooted.
I do have experience flashing ROMs on Androids, rooting, ClockWorkMod, ADB, etc. but I have never flashed anything on an Acer before. Ideally, I'd like to throw CWM on there and a (mostly stable) JellyBean ROM. Can anyone hook me up with some threads?
Thanks!
EDIT: You know, from the looks of it, that CUS1 kinda screams that something isn't stock. The only explanation I have is it changed when I rooted it.
In Developement section I noticed JB 4.2.1 beta3 is most current if your going on JB numbers (over 4.1.x) not all works (but is getting better each version), read thread
if you goto any JB ROM , it will based on another BASE... ACER A500 STOCK ROM only has gotten to 4.0.3 so far (NO JB)
A good MOD or addon, I like is "Google NOW by Civato MOD" it adds Google NOW to 4.0.3. (ICS)
Lightspeed 4.8 is a great ROM (older ICS 4.0.3 based) but nice how it is stripped of bloatware) and you can add OC kernel and have @ 1504 Mhz
Civato, has made a few ics 4.0.4 ICS roms with A700 mixed in, better screens, etc.
I Like sticking with STOCK Acer_AV041_A500_1.054.00_WW_GEN1. It's the most current STOCK version.
Then I strip out a lot of Bloatware, add in Civato's Google NOW mod. another MOD AD Blocker (etc\"hosts" file)
I tried JB on Another based ROM, couldn't get into it, I'd try 4.2.1 in few weeks when more is working.
*** MOST important to get onto ICS UNLOCKED Bootloader, and before that, GET CPUID before u do any other CHANGES
Hope this has been helpful.
So... Where do I start? What software should I use? Do I fix the bootloader first or flash CWM, or what?
I would like to update to the latest stable 'acer blessed' version of android (if its worth it?) before I pass it down to juvinile delinquent #2, yah I'm one of the lucky ones, remind me to buy a lotto ticket......DOH
Currently running 3.1, stock, unlocked, rooted, CWM and would like to keep my existing programs intact, hence a no-data-wipe update folks have had the most stable experience with. Since I have been outa the loop for awhile figured it best to get some useful feedback.
Since picking up my a500, I won an ipad-16GB-retina AX5 last summer and have recently picked up a nexus-7 which im dual booting 4.2.1 and ubuntu 13.04 using MultiROM v3, freekin amazing. Needless to say, I can afford to pass down the 'sherman' which has and still is running like a champ, gotta lot of miles out of it and hopefully get alot more.
Thx.
if you upadate to Latest ICS, you will need update the bootloader to ICS Unlocked ..lots of threads on it..
if you want to stay on older bootloader and run a stock ICS rom with much removed bloatware, download and flash LightSpeed 4.8 ROM
but either ROM you flash too, you will have to wipe DATA (or it won't work correctly) (my opinion)
you data has settings for HC settings and some apps are for HC , not ICS
I suggest you make nandroid backup , so you can revert back to old, if you have to)
*** Read alot of info on NEWER ICS, you can't go back and forth real easy, (like just flashing a ROM)
Stick with newer ICS ROM and keep Newer UNLOCKED ICS Bootloader, or stay with older HC ROM and older HC bootloader... (keep the set ROM + Bootloader -the same)
almost all ICS roms will need new UNLOCKED ICS BOOTLOADER.
newest STOCK ICS version is (Acer_AV041_A500_1.054.00_WW_GEN1)
-if you go thru OTA update, you will be stuck with LOCKED ICS bootloader
Hi,
I'm currently on stock 5.0 ROM (Simple ROM) but I prefer pure Android UI. I've got two questions:
Is there any fully-working and stable 5.0 ROM?
I'm on KK bootloader and TWRP 2.8.5.1 w/ Bump. Do I have to do anything if I want to flash non-LG 5.0 ROM?
No, you just have to find a Rom and install it through TWRP by factory reseting and installing zip + Gapps.
There are many different roms for the G2, if you like stock android UI with some little improvements, you have the well-known CM12.
If you prefer having a fast and smooth phone you might want to look forward on liquidsmooth.
If you're an addict of options and customization then the BlissPop rom is for you.
And if people likes the LG's stock interface they have simple rom (who can be coupled to GravityBox in order to be enhanced... ).
All those roms are still in devellopement, but honestly they have really good performance and the updates are now just some little things/bug fixes.
You first should look on Gravity Box + xposed who just realeased a LP version, might work on simple rom and add many things.
If you still don't like the improved stock experience you have all those other roms who have their specificies.
I'm currently running BlissPop and have to say that it's really well-made, but D802 has some problems with some builds causing bootloops, so not the perfect one indeed.
Just watch other threads and fine something that you'll like, feel free to ask questions...
So you say I don't have to flash JB bootloader, right? Just flash ROM using BUMPed TWRP and that's it?

No, no, NO! With some ROMs you NEED the JB bootloader, unless stated otherwise!
I made the same mistake and ended up with vertical black lines on the screen due to overheating upon hanging boot. So, even thought the ROM says it includes a bump-ed kernel, I would be really careful with KK bootloaders.

Actually for this simple/Grola ROM you need to be on bumped recovery and KK boot loader BEFORE flashing the ROM. You can flash back and forth between cloudy 2.2 and simple ROM, but aosp Roms in general require jb bootloader
