My question is, that one of the affected phones is my brilliant Galaxy S2. What does this mean for it? Will samsung remove things like Pinch to Zoom in order to bypass a potential injunction against the incredibly popular Galaxy S2? Will the Galaxy S2 be lobotomized in the official stock firmware update which is also inturn going to be further delayed?
What will become of the the S2 now?
Man this sucks .!! now i hate apple even more .!
Well Samsung is going for an appeal so it looks like this will drag on a bit.

The injunction hearing is early September. And in all likelihood the S1 and S2 will be banned unless samsung updates the firmware to remove the infringing features OR gets a legitimate license from Apple.
I think Samsung will not want the "good old" Galaxy S2 lose popularity as quickly as possible. They will probably strip it down to comply and call it quits on it. Because there is no more money in this phone to be made. It is in Samsung's favor that everyone jumps ship to new Samsung phones as soon as possible. Although I don't know how they will handle the infringing functionality on the S3 or the Galaxy Nexus's. But I am mentioning the S2, because it was specifically mentioned...
This may mean the next Jellybean update could be delayed for the S2 or it may not even show up.
Apple Sux! The Jury Sux! The US patent System Sux the most!
If pinch to zoom goes, we still have double tap to zoom. That's what I just more often though

This lawsuit is just madness. The only ones suffering from it is the consumers. It will halt the development of technology.
The patent laws in the US just doesn't make sense. It is just stupid that you can take a patent on rounded corners. I have a dining table with rounded corners from IKEA. In theory Apple could make a lawsuit against IKEA.
But I think that this will come biting Apple back in the a** in forms of different counter lawsuits from firms. I once read that Motorola owns some WIFI technology that Apple uses in their iMacs.
The thing is, I thought Samsung proved that pinch to zoom existed as prior art. Shouldn't Apple's patent be invalidated?

According to the article in the link, they also have a patent on tap to zoom too. What's next, are they going to patent an on off button?

"Pinch to zoom was first dreamt up decades ago by Myron Krueger and the University of Toronto developed and published papers on virtually equivalent technology almost 25 years prior to Apple producing its first multi-touch device (the iPhone), but Apple claims to have "invented" pinch-to-zoom as it appeared to be the first to do it in the context of a capacitive multi-touch screen."
These guys are actually serious? REALLY?
This is like the world's greatest robbery.
By banning Samsung products, Apple is somewhat monopolizing. I guess they couldn't handle competition, so the only thing they'll do is to sue the competitor..
If you guys read the comments below the article, you'll LYFAO Apple fanboys' comments sound pathetic to me.
WE LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE INNOVATION IS AKA INFRINGEMENT
I hope its true, that the ruling only applies to carrier galaxy s2 phones. I am not a developer or rooter or a user of custom roms. Too afraid and lack probably the knowledge to do all that jazz my S2. I rely primarily on stock roms from Samsung to update my phone. And to think the next update may just remove such "basic" features from my S2 is not a happy thought.
Damn Apple and its dirty tricks!
Meanwhile, Samsung is producing A5X and A6 processors in your factories.
In 1995, there was an opening from a Soap Opera in Brazil that a man uses tap to zoom in something like a tablet.

Pardon my ignorance, and sorry to our american peers, but even if this decision ultimately stands, wouldn't it just affect U.S. devices and their roms? And since I9100 is the international version of S2, until the courts from other countries come to the same verdict, how is the upcoming firmware updates affected?

That ruling is very interesting, not only for Samsung or Android, but for every other Touch OS also:
-Tap to zoom
-2 finger zoom
-swipe to unlock
-hiding scrollbar
-Icon layout with fixed icons at the bottom (phone, sms etc)
-multitouch gestures
All patents of Apple now, so officially every manufacturer would have to remove those features...
I hope Google doesn't remove them from AOSP, but fight IF Apple starts a lawsuit against them.
btw. now I know why the S3 has that water unlock screen and no visible swipe to unlock gesture^^

Got my hands on the S2 today and did a little comparison. I have to say there is little different size and weight wise but the S2 totally sold me and it's feel and the hardware are great. Not sure how Sammy can make the SGS any better. And as for 2.3.3, well I can't wait to get it now on my SGS.

SGS 3 is reported for release THIS year, sep/oct possible release and the true reason apple try to sue sammy.
Sammy have plans to release a flagship phone every 6 months instead of every year; and apple are crapping theirself, also sammy aint allowing apple full catalogue of their technology for them if rumours are to be believed.
Samsung are developing an edge-to-edge screen that they wont share with apple for iphone 5, abd rumours are apple are looking.at sharp to get an edge to edge screen
But with sammy reportedly releasing a flagship phone every 6 months, the iphone 5 will probably be out-dated before its release, with the galaxy s 3 already surpassing it at the end of this year.
All rumours, but it sounds more like the real reason apple are trying to sue sammy.
With ios falling in market share compared to android, and sammy releasing phones quickly, who'd want an outdated iphone?
Rumours are the galaxy s 3, will have a 1.8-2.0ghz dual core cpu with processing capabilities that closely match a PC.
Role on sammy..... End of iphone is near!

Hmmm that's great news
I have to say that is very interesting information, logically it makes alot of sense since Apple isn't really a proper hardware manufacturer in the true sense where it actually manufactures the core components that make up a smart phone.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/1/25/2733022/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-mwc-rumor
We're hearing from people familiar with the matter that Samsung — which had originally planned to announce its 2012 flagship Galaxy S III phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona late next month — has now decided to delay the news. It's unclear when or where the new announcement will be, but we're told that it'll still be out there "before summer." Though MWC seems like a logical choice for the GSIII's unveiling (the GSII was announced there last year), the speculation is that Samsung was uncomfortable with another long lag between the global launch and US availability. The US is a key market for Samsung's mobile business, of course — particularly when the company is successful in getting most or all national carriers to pick it up.
While we don't know what exactly Samsung will be announcing at MWC in the GSIII's place, we understand they'll have "interesting stuff" — perhaps a Galaxy Tab refresh, especially since the 10.1 is getting long in the tooth and we're due for a round of quad-core updates in 2012. A new Windows Phone portfolio is another possibility; there have been rumors that Microsoft will make an announcement at the show, and Samsung is about as strong a Windows Phone partner as Microsoft has outside of Nokia. We'll be following this story closely as it develops.
I posted this here only because a lot of people are/were expecting the SIII to be the runner up to the Note II but if Mods don'e believe it relevant, please remove.

I'm pretty disgruntled with AT&T's tardy release of devices, too. I hope Samsung's going to do something about it. This 4 month delay crap has gotta go.
Important s US is as a consumer market, it is no longer the most important nor the one that generate the highest sales figures.
lol Samsung Gimmicks ...
If they launched SGS III at MWC no one would buy the Galaxy Note as everyone will tend more towards the Quad Core ( I know tech sucks sometimes ) phones. Whether or not Samsung you are doing right, atleast I can have some more quality time with my note

Yes, China is becoming more important then the US I guess. There are models coming out in China that you do not even know about in the US.
Like the Samsung SCH-W999.
But I do not understand why a later announcement would decrease the delay in US availability. I do not see the logical link.

Do not forget the stuff that is already announced.
For example the Galaxy SII LTE HD that is 1280x720 and just a bit smaller then the Note.
It makes sense that the SIII does not get announced before the Note LTE , the SII LTE and the SII LTE HD get globally distributed.
But after that, bang... S III, 5 times faster then everything before.
You are making me depressed. Just stop it I want to have the most powerful phone on the market a little longer. Samsung is such a party pooper! I think i'll have to sabotage.. some stuff..

Exactly... Quadcore even with ICS wouldn't be reason enough for me to switch. Might make me think a bit before buying, but I'm pretty sure I'd still go with the Note...
i just want a note 2 for my next phone, something with a bit more ram so that apps arent shut down and tw doesnt get shut down as often as it does on my note which makes me wait till the homescreens get populated.
guess same reason for OTG being flaky with official and other OTG adapters. but a restart of the phone sorts it out and OTG works fine again.
hope the bugginess decreases with icrecream sandwich as sometimes the bugginess and lag on occassions makes me want to take a refund after returning the phone.
USB host capability is flaky compared to my 5y old archos 605 media player which ALWAYS recognises flash drives and able to copy or paste files easily. the note OTG facility for connecting flash drives and copy pasting files is a distinct and lousy second place compared to my 5y old archos 605 which is faultless for the flash drives connecting functions and connecting cameras etc. plus hub can record tv etc or anything that passes through the hub, even has an EPG so can do timed recordings. wish all those features come for the note 2 or even for this note with a media hub device. but hub should fit phone with all standard accessories like flip case probably will need a connection features like present on phillins fidelio range for android which connects to many android devices and samsung official accessories like hubs dont even fit the note when official flip case is put on. bloody jokers must be hired in their design dept.
There is a market for phones like the note and consumers like me who think bigger is better as the case for every note buyer, the SIII is different from note and when the note II comes out its gonna blow the SIII out of the water

Its too bad Apple, has fallen off with innovation and creativity, they really do make products that for the most part work great....but stale product offerings have really pushed me away from their mobile devices....there really isnt enough in iOS nor current iPhones/the newest iPad to get me to go out and buy one of their devices, and I've used iphones and ipads since their release...I will say however i still love using my MB Air =) Wondering what the iP5 will bring, iOS6 was just announced and I couldnt have been any less enthused..

Uh no they won't. Google isn't intimidating like Apple when it comes to concept patenting for a start. Google also did not patent turn by turn navigation or is the first that came up with this idea. GPS devices had turn by turn nav years ago.
It's annoying reading the tech bloggers at engadget and other sites being absolutely blown away by improvements such as higher resolution displays, more ram, more memory, etc. When Samsung or Asus comes up with a tablet or pc with higher resolution than an iPad they toss it off as an unnecesary improvement over something that was already ok.
They "reinvented" the laptop by what? Making it thinner? Sure, it's an amazing product, but an Asus transformer is a much larger step towards the future. I guess we'll keep seeing "lack of micro sd slot" in the Cons list of the HTC One X but fail to see the same on every iPhone's.

I don't see why not if apple can sue for such trivial things that are not even in the apple line of products the patent game is horrible even if google implemented one little thing to use eg how nav contacts with 3g. Just example but it I'm all for google to scrutinize the new ios just how apple has been to google etc .

Android, and every other touchscreen OS, (besides iOS) you might as well say goodbye to... I HOPE NOT!
Apple now has the power to destroy Android, Windows Phone, and any other iOS Touchscreen Competitor... Steve Jobs wins this round (for now anyways...)
How long before Apple has the S3 Pulled? This is the top iPhone competitor besides the DROID RAZR Series, with the S3 far ahead...
Check this out:
http://www.acsyndicate.net/apple-aw...ts-the-possible-end-of-android-as-we-know-it/
This could spell the end for Android and this phone, and I will not be a happy camper if I can't upgrade because of Apple... I will throw a major tantrum!
Google, act & appeal fast and fix this mess!!!!
Comments, Thoughts, Last Wishes?
I am not saying this will happen, but is quite possible if the government doesn't block Apple in their tracks from doing so... (I think once Google Appeals, these parents will be made standard for touchscreens...)
The one saving grace is that it's pretty clear the current patent system that dates back to George Washington in 1790 is clearly broken as it applies to technology. Should Apple start abusing their horde of patents to eliminate competition leaving them as the only purveyor of functioning smartphones and tablets governments worldwide will intervene. It's already started with Judge Posner throwing out the Apple v. Motorola case in Chicago with prejudice calling it "ridiculous" based on lack of or concocted damages. If Apple wins the Samsung case in California they'll lose anyway. It'll be the beginning of a massive move toward patent reform because in a democratic society you don't let one manufacturer control an entire industry whether their patents entitle them to or not.
Patent reform needed...
Old news, a repost and a lot of misleading and wrong information. Good job trying to direct traffic to your site thought, you could have just asked.
Do any of Google's newly acquired patents from Moto have any teeth against Apple?

I'm not sure that Apple CAN be granted patents for technology that already existed - smartphones have been around far longer than the iPhone, despite what the Apple folks would have us believe and I had phones that were doing these sorts of things long before Apple came along.
The law may be an ass, but I don't think it's a complete tool.

This could spell the end for Android and this phone, and I will not be a happy camper if I can't upgrade because of Apple... I will throw a major tantrum!
Google, act & appeal fast and fix this mess!!!!
Comments, Thoughts, Last Wishes?
I am not saying this will happen, but is quite possible if the government doesn't block Apple in their tracks from doing so... (I think once Google Appeals, these parents will be made standard for touchscreens...)

Steve Jobs, where is his grave? I think it would be a popular place for Android users to visit, so we can piss on it

Closed, this has been discussed to death, and its more of an android thing rather than a sgs3 thing, so wrong section as well.
Whining baby doesn't have anything but to complain all the time..

Based on their claims of design this is the only thing that doesn't violate one or more of their patents...

Really funny how it's only Samsung and Samsung made devices that are on the hit list so far....
Though if they drag google into it then ALL android devices will be affected... Will be funny to see how this will pan out as before it was Apple (America - LA) vs Samsung (Korea) and Apple won, now it will be Apple vs Google (both America based) and that might be a fairer match...
Apples litigation only alienates consumers. I for one will never purchase another product from them no matter how good it is.
They should try competing with products instead of competing in the court room.
I mean after sometime you just lose respect - they are in news for these court cases lately. If they had put this much energy in improving their own product(s), they wouldn't have to fall back on "retina" every time a new (really ?) product was released..
Apple says everything. Whine, whine, whine...

Apple: if you can't innovate, litigate.
Yes Apple feel Samsung is catching up and also overtaking them in innovations in cell phones so they are taking the easy way out they already were embarresed by a UK court and their appeals are not in good shape in US also with bans lifted on Tab so I think they are going insane.
I never used to dislike Apple so much, but every time they pull out another lawsuit it just makes me want to convert everyone to Android.

I think Apple are feeling threatened. 30 million SG3's sold. Several million Note 1 and 2's sold.
Trouble is, it makes people curious about Samsung products. I know several people that used to be Apple fans that are now Android owners, more to the point SG3 owners.

Good advertising for Samsung and Apple just look like little *****es who go running to the courts everytime a bigger better toy is released....
I mean, they pretty much, in their last court case, said that Samsung is the same as them just cheaper... I too know a few people who shifted to Android because of the attention Apple put on Samsung products...

I've converted 4 apple users to android and hopefully they can convert some more.
Girlfriend was reluctant but a hand me down gs2 from me did the trick. She on the gs3 now and iPhone 4 is a distant memory.
Well, as a matter of fact Android and Sammy-phones ARE better than Apple-CrAppel-Crap, and I am DEFINITELY NOT a tech-religious.
I had Motorola, I had Compaq iPaq, I had NOKIA with Symbian, I had HTC with WinCE, I have now Android, and when Win8 prooves to be fitting to my personal needs more than Android I will move on.
I had one iPad, and I put it away after 2 weeks since it prooved to be absolutely worthless for my personal needs in every respect starting with the stupid keyboard.
CrApple is not tech, it is religion, and we KNOW what misery most religions brought over the world in the past and now, and Apple is on his holy Jihad against rationality .......................
Apple is a wining kid who instead of fighting hard believes in loosing and crying over it and does not want to try again and win instead it believes in crying and wining over and over again
Watch out apple farmers everywhere.... You might be next....
Honestly, the way Apple's going you're going to have to pay $1 everytime you say Apple.... Bugger, might have given them a new idea... :silly::laugh:

Samsung should just man up and stop selling components to Apple.
