After an amazing turn of events, I just won an international version of the sgs3 and when it arrives, I'll probably be rooting and using the sgs3 as my new phone.
I would have to say that my experience with the DZ has its ups and downs (I'm looking at your stupid hinge design and the need for new springs HTC), but it was a fantastic phone.
I wish HTC would come out with another top of the line qwerty phone but alas, it probably wont happen anyways since their lackluster attempts.
I guess I'll be in this forum for not that much longer which is a sad thing because the dev community here is really really amazing...
Congrats

I'd also really appreciate hearing about your experiences with the S-III. One of my sons just got one but he is not technologically inclined at all and won't be doing anything out of the ordinary to his, even though I'm itching to get my hands on it!
thx

I used Odin to root. Was so simple. They have two recoveries for now. I use cwm for now but they have another touch based recovery called trwp (I think spelling)
The battery life is great, right after I rooted they came out with another ics update. I immediately put it on my phone via flashing through cwm and kept root through a dev name wildchld. Upgraded radio through a flash in cwm and stayed on the uvlah Rom for a couple of days. Couldnt help myself and that same dev has a Rom called exqisit and flashed it and been on it every since. They have and odex.apk from Paul obrien, so odexed it and it's as smooth as butter. Got 20 hrs of heavy use yesterday!! The leak jellybean is out from Samsung but I want to hold out as long as possible and play with ics some more.
Having a great time with this phone though. Loved my g2, but this is on another level, as would be expected. Getting used to touchwiz and no hw keyboard is interesting but quite easier then I thought it would be. The screen is HUGE!! All in all I'm very happy.

Well, if I recall correctly, the international gs3 may be quad core. The Tmo US version isn't, that I do know. So I'm now on a black sgs2, since it was half the price of the 3 at target and had almost the specs. (Sure the sgs3 has lte, but that doesn't matter much where I live.) Will be updating the g2 to jb soon since I just updated the sgs3 to it. That way the fallback phone won't be too jarring if I need it.

The international GS3 has quad core and 1GB RAM the US model has 2GB RAM and Dual core. I bought a G2 in July off contract for $150 since my dad won't get me a data plan or texting -_-

this is such a sweet thing to know.. I'm definitely going to have to start reading on rooting guides and also roms to go for. I don't think i'll be liking touchwiz so I would probably be pushing for a vanilla ICS or JB.. then maybe get a sense like theme over it (I like how sense has a big phone button on the bottom)
btw, do you guys recommend a case or a skin for the phone? I have the skin but i keep on getting annoyed that eventually it gets peeled off and no company makes a skin that fits perfectly.. some even have like a 2 mm gap on each side which drives me nuts
I have an otterbox, but I'm not really digging it that much. Doesn't feel real secure to me but is doing the job.

I'm wondering if I will not replace my DZ with a GS3 too... right now, I don't have the money to spend, but when I will, I really hope (but don't really believe ) there will be another physical keyboard device released here in Europe (France)... But I know I might have to take a full touch device, because every manufacturers are doing this, iPhone-like smartphones... And the GS3 seems to be one of the best of them!
Mine is wearing a transparant TPU case, fits perfectly
niice... Well I ended up just buying a metal insert battery backing and a screen protector.
That should cover the important parts.
I'm currently trying out omega's rom with nova launcher... so far so good. Any rom suggestions?

So how many people we really still have using and working on the vibrant? I'm feeling kinda lonely with my love for this phone =P seems like the vibrant is getting left in the dust allot quick then my G1, which is sad =/
Also side note, anyone else feel like with a SGS there really isn't anything good enough to upgrade to yet? Only phone I'd even consider is the original SGS2 or the sprint SGS2. And those are iffy due to crappy audio. Vibrant is the best phone I own period. Beats my nexus S in everything =P even beats out my HP touchpad easily IMO. Thoughts?

I feel you man, I'm getting bored of this phone. I will probably upgrade to the muiu phone. Since, it's battery lastes so long.

I just got the Vibrant about 2 months ago, as my wife's Motorola crapped out on her and our carrier swapped it out for the Vib. She wanted to swap with me, so I did and I have to say that once I upgraded it to a custom ROM, I actually like it a lot. It works well for me and what I want.
I think that most of the Jump-ship is because of boredom and not performance. I feel that and understand it. I have been there myself, but I like this phone and it is really easy to handle, breakdown (mean ADB by this) and there have been some really great customizations out on it.
Plus between the 16gb internal and my 32gb external, that is some serious storage for a phone. My old computer from a few years ago only had 30gb hard drive in it.
I am here and plan on staying for awhile.
I'm still here, kinda. My G2x is my main driver, but i still got my Vibrant and still build kernels when i have time. You're not alone

But this phones death is due from no updates.from tmobile. it just makes it way harder to develop for....
Go to the galaxy s2 forums ;-) .
You will find most of the great devs from many of the different forums there.
It seems as though Samsung shipped out yet another phone with outdated filmware lol....imagine that,
They are promising to send ics thru kies lmao ....I believe we have been thru this BS before
There are 3 vibrants in my home. My wife upgraded to the sensation and after a week gave it to my son and took her vibrant out of the drawer. I personally love this phone. Thanks to all the devs who still work on it. I have stockpiled my fave roms and kernels....just in case the remaining devs leave

I just got my Vibrant 2 mth ago from my fren who sold to me. Im not chasing the technology so i tink this phone is great for me. I like it a lot n planning to stay with it for a while longer cos i dont have the 2yrs contract matter. Btw cos im frm Singapore and we dont have Vibrant here so that makes my phone unique than the original SGS..lol. But i really dissapointed on Samsung on the firmware case and yeah this phone if rooted fly high. So i have to say i love my vibrant. Also thanks to all the devs here, appreciated what u guys have done for us n for staying with us making us great customs roms/kernels.

ICS for Vibrant? Looking foward to this.lol
this is a great phone and when rooted does everything i've ever wanted a phone to do. although the experience with ICS will more than likely be better I'm still content with what we have so far. there are no hardcore 3d games that have pushed the hardware to the limit so I don't see any real hardware upgrade necessary. I stopped buying games on my vibrant any way cause I wasn't finishing the ones I had bought before and realized I was wasting my money. So i'm simply using it for media apps, social apps etc. These don't really need a dual core processor with 1gig of ram. The only thing I could want is an identical ICS theme and I'd be set at least for another year on this phone even if we don't ever get ICS.
Yeah, I could maybe see myself moving over to the Nexus S simply because it's got a bigger dev community and the T-Mobile version can be found for pretty cheap, but otherwise I just can't justify moving on from the Vibrant. If I don't go for the Nexus S I'll probably ride out with this until more ICS phones come out.
Hey ECOTOX, I've been quietly learning some stuff about Android and whatnot, I wouldn't consider myself a dev, not even close to one, but I'm learning and I catch on quickly, if you need any help, or have any tips, I'm here. I love this phone, and I won't be moving on to any other phone anytime soon.

I feel the same. I just don't see a lot of end user support with the Samsung products such as the Vibrant, and many other iterations. Updates seems to either take forever or it'll may never see the light of day. As for developer community? I can't really complain about their support for this device, since they are bringing out the goodies out of their own time with no expectations of donations, etc. And I'm grateful that they are cooking up roms, etc. In the future? I will be purchasing a Google branded phone: prompt updates, and great end user support. I just can't live with a dead end product, just feels like I got cheated out.
Well I just went to T-Mobile store and played with the sgs2 and I must say I'm completely impressed.
With a quadrant score of 2748 stock I'm blown away.
With my shattered screen and assurion's choice of replacement I'm sticking with my broken vibrant with miui ...I'm hoping sgs2 gets miui soon ...but I'm getting antsy and just might go out next week and buy the sgs2 outright
So I see that the HTC Rezound dropped down to $50 today, and I've been looking for a cheap 4g phone that isn't the stratosphere. This "looks" like a good deal, except I know absolutely nothing about HTC phones.
The beats audio thing looks pointless to me, but does anyone have any thoughts on the rest of the phone? I am entirely clueless about this so any insight is appreciated.

the rezound is a good phone. with an unlocked bootloader, 4g, hd screen and htc, its a good upgrade. plus you could even sell the earbuds and make all your money back id say go for it if you dont mind a phone on the thicker side lol
it's a nice phone, especially at that price. good specs, nice HD screen (though not amoled so not quite as vibrant) and fast data. I'd recommend it, especially with the ics upgrade coming in a few days.

Coming from someone who really doesn't enjoy touchwiz at all, is sense enjoyable to use? It doesn't look like the Rezound has any ICS source which worries me, but maybe I'm more worried than I should be because Samsung destroyed my confidence in custom skins?
I might just have to get my AOSP fix from my Gtab, but I'm also just realizing how awesome the Fascinate is.

being that i came from an htc eris, i can say sense is nice but laggy...and samsungs are still about the easiest to mod. unfortnately ICS source would have to be out before i would make the switch...gingerbread blowz!
Hardware wise, it's a pretty good phone for $50. I personally wouldn't be interested in it since (sorry to be harsh) but AOSP development looks... less than promising. Wouldn't be terribly interested in sense. There will be official ICS soon, but it's with sense 3.6, not version 4, which looks like the only decent iteration of sense in ages.

It looks like all they need is s-off (which from what I can see is very close to being completed) to gain access to the nand partition, and ICS kernel source.
So I guess I need to find out if HTC is good about releasing kernel source, if they are I might just pick this up.
4G tethering to my tablet is just so tempting...om nom nom!
if you like sense (or think you might), its probably worth getting
i wouldnt your breath for aosp though as they dont have any experienced aosp guys who own the phone or are working on it
really though being tied to that phone for 2 years might be kinda rough imo...id soldier on and wait for any news on either a better htc (hopefully a one series) or the sgs3 and try and pick up a charge on the cheap on craiglist ebay (cant be more than 125 these days) if you need lte

Get it then! It's arguably the best phone on Verizon. Dual core. Hd screen. Unlockable bootloader. One of the best cameras. You really can't go wrong. You can wait it out for a better phone (gs3 or HTC one series), but don't get your hopes up. Good luck and choose well because you only have 24 hours. Plus try to use amazon wireless. Ya you pretty much nailed the two reason I haven't bought it yet.
1.) No AOSP, and they're getting ICS delayed over and over.

They are working on RIL for CM9. Once that gets worked out (and they do have experienced AOSP guys working it), and ICS kernel source drops it'll be done. From what I understand, there are quite a few devs that are ready to start working on the Rezound when the s-off method is released.
For everyone bagging on sense, it really is a matter of opinion and taste. I'm running a Sense 4.0 Rom that was just released today and it is really nice. Still needs some work and polish, but it is running very well. It's funny, a lot of people complain about Sense being ugly, but it is amazing how many people want to run an AOSP Rom but also have a lot of the Sense widgets like the flip/weather clock and animations, and Friend Stream (which I personally can't stand), and the app drawer. Personally, I like both and think they both have their strengths and weaknesses.
What AOSP devs do they have and what's the status of S-OFF?

dmeadows3,synisterwolf, and droidvicious (MIUI) are two that I know of. Plus two awesome devs that usually work on Sense Rom's (Joelz and newtoroot) I believe said that they are going to contribute to the RIL issues too.
As for S-Off, last week globatron and his team did a very short closed beta on a method for S-off and successfully attained s-off on several peoples rezounds. We are just waiting for them to get it ready for prime-time and then we're golden.
I can't wait for CM9 and Miui v4 on this phone to be honest.
Nice, hopefully things speed up from this point and they can get some good AOSP development. Without solid AOSP rom support, it'll be hard for me to upgrade.
I suppose I just thought it was funny how a bunch of rezound people were talking about how much greater the rezound is than the nexus, "wait until we have CM9, this thing will spank the nexus!". This was like 5 months ago when the phones were coming out (and still no AOSP), but I still see comments like that. I don't really care since I don't have either device, just thought it was mildly amusing. Not saying AOSP roms won't happen, but most of the people you mentioned port sense roms, which as I understand, is a different animal then building from source.
Hopefully they can get the RIL figured out.
As the GS3 is out, the GS2 will be dropping in price. I'm toying with the idea of jumping ship. I'll be keeping the DZ as spare as I do everytime I change.
Just wandering if anyone feels this a bad move. The GS2 section is highly active with native ICS and lots of good devs I know from my days with GS1.
The only thing preventing me is the amazing development going on here. This is by far the most active forum I have been a part of.
Unless someone wants my DZ of course

personally, I'd buy the DZ again if it where to break today... All those new and shiny smartphones are great, however I really love the hardware keyboards and dislike the onscreen keyboards (I've tried many). I am hoping/waiting for a newer smartphone like the DZ! (If any manufacturer where to release a smartphone with a Meamo derived OS and a hardware keyboard, I'll buy it on pre-order!)
I know what you mean. HW keyboards are good. My tab is a asus transformer with keyboard dock. I don't mind the onscreen kb's on phones. I regularly use the DZ in portrait mode.
Just feel like a change and the GS2 is still a top spec phone. I realise it sounds like I'm trying to convince myself. I'm actually trying to convince myself not to
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
Edit: I agree with you on meamo with a keyboard. Had a go on a nokia N9 and its was great.
If you are trying to convince yourself to NOT get a new phone: Do you actually *need* a new phone? Or do you just want to have another new gadget to fool around with?
Hmm you caught me I am a bit of a serial gadget swapper. The DZ is one of longest I've had a phone (got it in sept). Its the fifth android device I've had in 2 years. All of which I've rooted etc. You're right, I don't NEED a new phone. I am on a sim only contract purely so I can swap to whatever I want.
Do you think we will get much better performance out of the DZ? I can't help but think we are getting the best possible out of this.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I will buy One X, but I will use Desire Z as my tablet, I will flash AOKP in tablet mode, and voila! It will be pretty hard to don't have a keyboard, but I don't need the keyboard on 4.7 screen, I've tried to write something on the onscreen keyboard, and it was almost as DZ, but it will never be the same.

I will be on board with the sgs3 as soon as tmobile gets it. My contract is up in august so should be just in time. Can't wait. The hw keyboard is a thing of the past for me. I see no reason to buy a new phone. G2 is still fast and has a nice slide out keyboard and build quality.
I'm thinking the same myself... My contracts up in about 2 weeks. Is it worth it to wait for the Galaxy S3, because it seems like the specs are pretty close to the Galaxy S2?
EDIT: I'm waiting. It comes to T-Mobile 2 days after my contract ends so I figure, why not! Excited already.
Just thought I'd update you on what I did.
I got. Motorola RAZR on an offer I couldn't refuse. Its lame that moto haven't pushed out ICS yet but I am running a leak that came out a couple of weeks ago. It runs great and I'm really happy.
In the long term I will probably change to whatever nexus device comes out in the autumn. Or the galaxy s3.
Going to pop in here from time to time as I have given my dz to my dad to see if he likes having a smart phone. He'll probably keep it and get a new battery for it.

Loved my Atrix, even though I had to replace it twice, it was great. It made me convert from the iphone to android and I wont go back. Saying thanks to all the Devs for all the support.
Upgraded to the Blue Galaxy S3, and I love this phone. It is the first iphone killer android ever released. Cant wait to start swapping roms!
Good luck and keep us informed!
Glad that you enjoyed the atrix, I myself am waiting for an update before I look into getting another phone. Truth is, I am just starting to tap the potential of this phone with the lap dock and dock unit hooked up to a monitor with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I have only ever used an Alien version from Kenneth Penn (sp?) But I think I am to the point, once ICS comes out and people have a chance to play with it, I may up clock mine and put some other rom on it. I don’t think I will go beyond 1.3 GHz, but I have never even seriously looked into it. I have had the option of an upgrade, but this phone is so fantastic with the FS, peripherals and speed, I have yet to see a phone come close to all that I use this for.
Perhaps a tablet and integrated phone combo will be my next option? IDK the transformer infinity looks to be a decent tablet, and I could use that for work and easily justify it.
Keep us up to date on like and dislikes in comparison to the atrix please!

I really love the large screen, at first it was overwhelmingly large but after a few hours I love it. Also love the 720p res and the crisp vibrant colors. Also its very smooth and fluid with the 2gb of system ram and 1.5ghz dual core.
ICS is really nice on this. I think I will keep the stock rom for a few weeks before flashing a new one.
A week ago I also switched to a Galaxy S III and I'm loving it too. I'm passing the Atrix down to my daughter -- it still has a lot of useful life left in it. The Atrix was also the phone that convinced me to switch from my IPhone. The Atrix really has been a phenomenal phone for me. I'm gonna miss it. Thus far I've determined that the bluetooth radio in the Atrix is better than the S3. But in all other regards I think the S3 is an advancement from Moto's awesome phone from last year. My daughter is gonna love the car and lap docks that I'm also passing down to her. Will be nice when the Atrix gets ICS too.

I can't blame you the development community has really slowed down. Seems like lots of devs have moved on. The two best nonbeta roms (neutrino and Nottach) have not been updated in some time. The cm9 roms are nice but stuck in limbo until official ICS.
I myself went to a OneX but returned due to poor call quality. It was rough coming back to a small grainy screen but for the size the Atrix is a great phone. It carries very well.
I was very close to picking up an s3 but we had some home repair bills around the house (dead AC, blown water tank) and I'm not 100% sure if I want to renew my ATT contract or go with something like Straightalk.
Also went to a White GS3 and its wonderful. Was using CM9 and didn't realize how choppy the Atrix was til I had something better. It was a fun ride but I can't keep waiting for nvidia/motorola to get their **** together.

Sorry not meaning to. This is my first Samsung android and I'm highly impressed. Last Samsung I owned was a blackjack. This s3 is fast!

I really hear you guys.
I might switch to the galaxy nexus, because my phone might have a motherboard problem(really hoping that it doesn't). However I feel terrible about it because this phone has SOOOO much potential, but it's marred by laggy choppy firmware, closed drivers. The atrix is a really great phone , and I wanna see the day when it'll run as smooth, stable, and fast as the the galaxy nexus on jelly bean. I know the atrix can, and then I'll know this phone is truly complete.
And hats off to the atrix dev community, for being one of the most effective on xda, especially with our limited drivers and resources
Well add me to the list. I too went with a GS3. Love it, but I still love this Atrix. I purchased a micro sim adaptor just so I could continue to use this baby. It actually feels faster and my GS3 is over clocked to 1890mhz. Still rocking the stock rom rooted with nothing frozen for now. Battery is no where near what I get with my Atrix, but like I said ...early stages of modding the Galaxy. I still read the forums when time allows and appreciate the dev community. You have all been great and a stepping stone to the path of making this phone more then the first dualcore power house that it is. Thanks!

Sorry, I know this topic is EVERYWHERE but I still cannot decide..
I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S3. I'm thinking of getting the N4 just cause its so cheap, however I've been looking at the HTC One as well.
Hardware wise, HTC one leads.. I love the front facing speakers, and the fact that its HTC makes it even better.. I loved the HTC Nexus One, so solid...
I'm still torn between these two phones, and I need someone to let me know what I should go for. Is it worth the extra $250-$300 for the HTC one? OR should I just get the N4?
Thanks
Indeed
Get it and don't look back. Whatever you do though, get the 16gb version. The 8gb version just leaves you with 5 gbs of usable data, and that is noooo good. I get better battery life than my girlfriend who has an s3, and I am constantly beating her phone in very unscientific tests that I run.
:silly:
The Nexus is a beautiful phone, how about getting it...and if you don't like it sell it and get the One. You would get pretty much all your money back as they are very popular
yea you could get a lot of money if you sell it afterwards just for the fact it is unlocked out of the box:good:
One

I use the N4, but if I were to get a new phone today, I would definitely consider the One. I think it's designed really well and I too like the idea of front facing speakers. I like having music on around me and when I'm away from home, I'll often use my phone for playing music. When it's convenient, I'll use my earbuds. When not, I may have to resort to playing it through the speaker. Even with the LG bumper lifting the back off the surface it's resting on, the sound coming out of the speaker is more tinny and muffled compared with my past phones. Finally, while I enjoy the design of the N4 and its liberal use of glass, it does have a certain sense of fragility to it which I don't associate with the aluminum clad One. If you do get an N4, I''m sure be unhappy. But I wouldn't mind if I could get LTE data speeds.
HTC One and the Nexus 4 are tough. If you can manage putting AOSP on the One, it'd be awesome. I'd have a tough time too.
Get two nexuses!

I think your comparison is really not that ... Uhhhh... Justified... Esp due to the price range... If you want to decide between newer high end phones it should probably be the ONE vs the S4... Not the One vs the N⁴...
I personally do love the n⁴ but I must say the ONLY 2 things which gives it an edge over anything else is the Vanilla/prompt updates, and the reasonable price. If I had the extra money to spend I would definitely get the ONE or S⁴ Google Edition... Alas I don't tho...
So if you could get the One then I would say go for that... Just try to get the unlocked boot loader version (developer edition) so you can do as you please with roms...

If I do not get the Developer version of the one, am I still able to unlock the bootloader?
Edit: nvm, quick google says "Yes" to all carriers
Edit2: Still trying to decide, I CAN put down another $300 on the HTC one.. but I'm not sure if its WORTH it.. thats the problem

I think it will be and I'll tell you why...
If Its unlockable then you can get to the latest firmware updates if not the same day, within say 2-3 weeks using cyanogen or some ROM who will update...
Your getting a better camera and screen and aluminium body with front stereo speakers... That's excellent hardware well worth the extra money... Because if you use the phone alot... All these factors come Into play in the long run... If your more of a casual user who primarily uses the phone as a phone... Then its probably not worth the extra money...
In my opinion my phone is like a laptop replacement... I use it ALOT... Hence I rather spend more on a phone than a Computer as the computer just collects dust with a powerful smartphone...

If you are not planning to use the camera much, get the N4, otherwise go for the HTC.
Ultimately it's up to you.
Sold my Galaxy S4 today and bought a Nexus 4 again. The S4 was laggy as hell and packed with way to much bloatware. The screen, speaker and camera however we`re very good. But overalll it was a dissapointment for me. While on paper the specs look great the firmware is very bad atm so the performance is meh......
what would happen if i updated my nexus 4 to 4.3 jellybean on a custom rom like cyanogenmod

You have to keep the retail price in mind. If you get the HTC one and a new phone comes out, how popular will your phone become? The HTC one x was a good phone but as of now it's selling for around $230 on eBay. I had a galaxy nexus which was released 2 years ago and I still sold out for 280.
