Hi, I'm looking from advice from existing Galaxy Tab 10.1 users.
I am a self employed web designer and am looking for a tablet that I can use as a mobile portfolio and for demos of sites under development, etc.
My main requirements are... light, thin + decent 10" screen and ideally something that doesn't feel too cheap so when I hand it to clients it feels OK.
I can get a (reconditioned) Galaxy Tab 10.1 on eBay UK for £190 so it strikes me as a good deal.
Would a Galaxy Tab 10.1 suit my purpose? Is the ICS build OK? Are there any gotchas? As I said it will really be used fairly infrequently. I have an Android phone (Moto RAZR) that I can tether to the tablet for 3G data.
Any advice or thoughts are very welcome!
aesthetically speaking, the G-tab 10.1 is a very nice device. the new ICS update has been working very nice also.
however, the "gotcha" is that it's last year's hardware (dual core Tegra2). Getting one now really puts you behind the curve compared to tablets with current hardware. Personally, I wouldn't get anything less than a quad-core cpu.
The Asus transformer TF300t is the best deal on a 10" tablet right now (quad-core Tegra3, and it just got the Jelly Bean update), but it's not quite as nice feeling as the original G-tab 10.1, and it's still probably a bit more expensive than 190 english pounds

Nothing he is wanting to use the tablet for would need anywhere near 4 cores. Nothing we have available to us right now fully utilizes 4 cores. ICS is the first firmware to even fully utilize 2 cores. By the time we need quad core tablets, the current quad core tablets will be old and outdated anyways. I say, for what you need it for, the gtab will be just fine.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Pulled the trigger on one this morning. :good: As Towie said, the Tab will mainly be used for web browsing a single site at a time during meetings and a bit of Evernote / gmail / etc.
If it proves useful I'll probably upgrade to a quad-core (or whatever the state of the art is) next year.
Add a nice oem Samsung leather pouch and the ics update and you're set. Looks professional and the browser is much better (displays non-mobile optimized sites very well.) Good luck with your business.

Agreed.
The Samsung case, while a bit pricey, is really nice. After buying two Tabs for my wife and me, the first accessories I bought were the Sammy cases.
And I'll add to GorillaPimp's wishes for good luck.

I actually picked one up for $11 US at an electronics chain store that was dropping all Tab accessories. HHGregg is the chain. I was shocked at the quality when I opened the package. Much better than the OEM case that allows it to stand and has the magnetic flap. That thing can't even tolerate a finger nail swiping it and it was $50.
in short? NO.
get SGT 2 10.1.
SGT 10.1 will not allow you to make gsm calls, while pretty much any other Samsung tablet with 3G will let you.

The Galaxy tab 10.1 3g can make calls. I made a few today. Well, the hack was only made available so that's why most users wouldn't know about it.
Btw, I upgraded (downgraded) Sgt 2 10.1 a month ago. It was horrendous. Screen was nowhere near as good and I couldn't get a HDMI adapter for it and battery was crap. Ended up keeping the original and selling the tab 2.

So NewEgg has a deal on the Galaxy tab currently (30 dollars off plus 50 dollar gift card) and was wondering if it is still something worth buying. Considering the progress made with HC as is, I can only expect it to get better if/when Google releases source.
For the price, is it still something you would buy today?
I just bought mine a couple of weeks ago and have no complaints. It gets used way more than my Asus Transformer does. I love the 7" screen, perfect size for me.

Was looking at the transformer too. May I ask why? Is it too big?
Exactly. Try reading a book with a 10" device always seem to need two hands. Typing with both thumbs on the Tab vs finger pecking on the transformer. The size of the 7" is perfect for me.

its worth buying if you can get a deal.
As mentioned above 7" is a major bonus. By implication though it means you really want 3G as well. When I was contracting (and hence moving around, taking a lot of different public transport routes etc.) it was an awesome travel companion. It also makes it a great ereader in a pinch.
Custom ROM it and performance is pretty good, esp. as Samsung's browser is hardware accelerated.
If its going to be sitting on your coffee table w/ wifi though, or the price is comparable to a 'current' honeycomb Tegra 2 10" slab, I'd go honeycomb/dual core. There's not much of an upgrade path for it, honeycomb is going to be an unofficial port (if at all?)
I got mine at a knockdown price and really like it. However I still wouldn't have paid RRP for it (by the same token I'm not paying RRP for transformer etc. or even ipad so duh)

Agreed... pretty easy to find on ebay or CL for $250 or less... picking up another one tomorrow for $200... Almost as good a deal as the HP TP and a lot more clarity about its future, apps, upgradability, etc.
It's still a great device. Is it the newest and latest? Nope. Will it run tons of great apps and be a solid performer for most of your uses? Sure! Now is also the time to snap up cheap discounted cases and other accessories for the 7".
I flashed the Overcome ROM on mine after I was tired of waiting on T-Mobile for the 2.3 update. That's a great ROM. Super battery life, video calling (with FFC working great) via Google Talk, excellent ebook reader, calls over Google Voice with Groove IP, etc etc.
I say this even though I also have the Galaxy 10.1. That's for lazy home use. I can take the 7" with me just about everywhere.

funny, I have the same mindset/usage pattern between my Galaxy Tab and my iPad...
I been hearing great things about the SGS2 so I set aside the cash for it and yesterday went to get it but came back without making the purchase.
When I held it in my hands I just couldnt figure out how the puny screen could be any better than my SGT. Battery life is similar, I can run similar or same applications and both can do depending on what I install from the market. With the custom ROMs my SGT OS is probably higher version, less buggy and smoother than what I would get on the SGS2. Yea there might be some new high tech capabilities but do I need it. Most likely not and at this time don't even know what they are.
So I gave up the idea of going smaller than the 7". Quite a while back I kicked the idea of going bigger than 7". I can still put my SGT in my back pocket or my jacket breast pocket and cary it with me anywhere. Try doing that with anything biger than 7".
For me there is absolutely no good reason to go for anything else for a while.
Yep, still worth buying.

New or used?
I'm looking at buying another used one for $200CDN for my GF. She prefers the Galaxy Tab over the Transformer as well.
I'm thinking about buying 3 of these for the office because of the portability. It would make a great tool for our QC department.
Definitely worth buying. Look at my signature of what I have had and look at which tab is still standing. The 7" form factor is the best. Not to mention this thing plays any video I've thrown at it. Such was not the case for the others tabs.

Or it can be bought from me.
Shameless plug for my thread in the marketplace.
I am in the market for my first tablet, and I think I have cut it down to 2 the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Transformer. What is your opinions on both, which would you recommend? I will be using the tab for movies, web surfing, gaming, you know average use. I do want to be able to root it and I do know the B70 and on models for the transformer cant be root yet.
Let me know what you guy think.
Well I just got my 10.1 today and I enjoy it so far... I almost got the TF but went with the GTab 10.1 due to the size! It is a lot lighter and for the aforementioned things I think you wouldn't be wrong in picking either but as far as carrying it around I think the 10.1 wins out!
I was also interested in the Transformer, but got the Galaxy Tab. I love it! So thin and light, and the screen is much brighter than the Transformer I looked at. I do love the keyboard for the Asus and the ports. I wish the Tab had more ports rather than the proprietary connector, but am glad with my purchase. I bought the Samsung keyboard dock and love it too. Also, I think Touchwhiz is an upgrade to Honeycomb. I can't believe I'm saying that, but I think it makes it better.
Take it from someone who had a transformer and a 10.1 at the same time. Go with the galaxy tab. I only now have the galaxy and couldn't be happier.
The asus doesn't have an oleophpbic coating which in my opinion is a deal baker. I would go to show it to someone and the thing was so smudgy and gross no one wanted to touch it. Deal breaker.
Also the build quality on the asus isn't up to par, the copper trim flaked off very easily and it had massive light bleed. The thing seemed thin and compact when I first got it but after getting my galaxy tab it made the asus look like a boat.
Can't go wrong with a 10.1 on a modded rom!
I was in the same boat, too. I went back and forth, and I was ready to purchase the Transformer because of the price even though I prefer the design of the Tab.
Fortunately, I found a deal on the GT which removed the only benefit the TF had (for me), and it will be here tomorrow.

I agree with this. I was (pretty much like everybody here) looking to get the galaxy tab 10.1 or Transformer but I am happy with my decision of getting the tab. Although seeing the S1 and having it as an option while shopping for a tablet I would definitely consider the S1 as my tablet of choice.

I've never had a problem buying factory refurbs. I know most times you get a reduced warranty, but I run an electronics repair shop so I'm not that worried. Best Buy has refurbs for $399.
Get the Galaxy tab. I had the Asus transformer and took it back to Best Buy (3 times). Each one had backlight light leakage. I tried the Sony tablet as well. It was a very nice tablet. I would be using it right now instead of the Galaxy. But the materials used with the Sony is awful. The front felt like plastic. Plus I didn't like the S curve design.
I have a transformer and its awesome. Asus has been great at giving us updates and official 3.2
I traded my never used iPad2 3G 16gb for the Asus and dock. I had offers for both but the lack of external memory killed it. The additional ports are awesome for hooking up external hard drives and USB devices such as 3G cellular cards and mice.
However I primarily just use it as a tablet. As just a tablet I might have preferred the Galaxy but I do use the additional stuff and it has saved me quite a bit. At least the option is there.
The Transformer 2 is coming out in October with the first quad core. Probably nothing to make me upgrade but if your looking to buy, Id agree with everyone else and wait a few weeks. Pick up a quad and be ahead of the times for a while.

October is rumored! There is no actual date yet. For all we know it will be next year before the TF2 comes out. I think it is stupid to wait this long to give a release date if it is October.. October is 3 days away and nothing.. Damn Amazon gave a date for the Kindle Fire which is going to be released in November.
The only thing holding back from buying a Transformer is not being able to root it.. I like to customize my devices.. The one big thing to the GTab is its easy to root. Tomorrow I will be going to BB to and ask to see what Transformers they have to look at all there serial numbers =P. If they dont have a rootable one.. Ill just wait or look hard at the GTab.
Ive owned both and got rid of the asus as too many build faults on my unit which others have experienced also ie creaking body work and a blown speaker also when i had it thee was an imbalance in speake levels also that may have changed howeve it had not on the 3.2update
In my opinion the tab is a bette finished tablet yes updates are not as fast as asus but the tablet impresses a lot more than the tf did, the its a tablet its a netbook docking show off i did got tiresome after the first few posings
I liked the asus at first ands its not a bad attempt but the tf 2 is meant to be out very shortly i would wait

I just returned a tf back to bb for a tab 8.9. Functionality wise it worked great but the speakers suck. To make it even worse the speakers are right where you put your hands in landscape. I would rather have the ports but they werent that important to me. As soon as i picked up the 8.9 i fell in love. The size is damn near perfect. Ive always felt that tablets were too big to hold but this thing feels way smaller yet the screen doesnt. Touchwiz is a very nice bonus and you get earbuds in the box. Its only $20 to add a usb port so no big deal.
If you get a chance go put your hands on a tab 8.9.
I'd say skip all the Tegra 2 based tablet as the new generation tablets are coming very soon. It's just not worthy to get it at this moment.

I have a Transformer and my wife has a GT 10.1. If I didn't need the keyboard dock for mobile writing, I'd opt for the GT. Not only does it feel better in hand, but Samsung surprised me with the job they did with TouchWiz on the tablet. I'm actually a little jealous of my wife in the this case.

I've got an Aussie GT-P1000T and its a great device. I quite like the smaller 7" form factor and that's really this tab's biggest point of difference to the other tabs you mention. The Transformer is 10.1" (and it's replacement has already been announced if that's a problem for you) while the iPad is 9.7".
The only other thing to keep in mind is that this year Samsung will be releasing a HC-capable replacement for this tab as well as larger 7.7" and 8.9" Tabs so you might want to keep that in mind before you buy anything.
the original gt 7 inch is THE ONLY TABLET WITH TELEPHONE CAPABILITY....no other tablet provides this. so you can actually "get rid" of your celphone by having this tablet. You should use handsfree kit BTW for making calls....
As for the UI well I will leave it up to you to decide as my experience with android might be misunderstood as trolling.....hint: I recently got hold of an ipad 2....
It's still a great tablet, everything works perfectly on it (including calls). If you are looking for cheap and qualility, this is it, you can find cheap used/refurb SGT7 with 3G. if money is no object to you, I would wait for 7.0plus or 7.7

Development in the tablet thread is considerably less active than that of the samsung galaxy S2 you have, but thats just representative of the number of owners of phones against tablets.
Although few in number the devs here still push out some great work, you will find ROMs based on the recent android releases and a couple of custom kernels that are both fast and stable.
And as the prices of tablets drop the forums are only going to become more active.
I hear that, I know the Tegra 3 on tge Asus tab is really good but im still wondering why the price on it is so low compared to the Samsung and Apple pads. Etc, asus prime 32gb tabs are the same price as the Galaxy 16 gb tabs. Is it the screen? Quality? I know Asus is not a big brand like Samsung and Apple but im lost.

If you CAN wait, do it.
The new Tegra will be much much faster, and even consume less power. the Galaxy Tab is a good tablet, at least with custom rom/kernel on it. If you want one now, buy it. You won't regret it, especially not after we got CyanogenMod 9.
What is a bit a downer is the proprietary connector on the Galaxy Tab. That sucks, to be honest

No, the "sdcard" is mounted directly on the board. It also isn't an sdcard at all So, there is no way to change the storage capacity.

If you can, buy it at Costco. They have them for about $75 off right now in-store. They also turn their stock really quickly so the one you'll get will be a more recent build which has a new screen design. Costco also has a 90 day return policy so if you're disappointed you're not married to it.
I had a Wi-Fi tab originally and just got a 3G Tab from the UK knowing that the Prime's release was imminent. It's got some lag at times but if you read the first impressions posts in the Prime forum it appears it does too which means s/w still plays a role. I think the biggest advantage with Teg3 will be in gaming and local video playback performance. I don't do much of either so Samung's build quality and better audio and video codecs are what made me re-buy one.
Asus has a pretty poor track record h/w wise and there were a lot of issues with the TF1. The Wi-Fi issue with the Prime that's still not been fully explained should give people pause. Both Acer and Lenovo are coming out with Teg3 tablets in Q1. Production starts on the Lenovo in January. If you like the Tab, keep it. If not, at the end of 90 days you'll have some additional choices. Of all the future tablets announced, Samsung's 11.6" Tab with an end-to-end high resoultion screen and second-gen Exynos processor is the one I'm most excited about. That could make me switch but I'm really happy with my current Tab for the time being.
The 10.1 is a nice tab, but it's starting to get a little long in the tooth. If I didn't get mine as cheaply as I did ($320 on Woot) then I probably would have waited for the next crop of Teg3 and Exynos devices. If you absolutely have to have a tablet right now, the Tab 10.1 is a fantastic choice, but definitely shop around.
Yea. I went to Best Buy a little while ago and played with the 10.1 and found it very laggy... even though I know people been using it all day and custom roms and kernels would fix it I still realized that I think it will be better to wait a few weeks for the Prime for the same amount of $$ of a 16 gb Galaxy tab I could get a 32gb Prime thats ICS ready.

Yeah, although I want a 10.1 tab, the fact that it's equally priced as a new quad-core tablet with more space and ports is preventing me from doing so. I can only hope they drop the price in light of the release of the new quad core beast...

If you don't need the stylus and/or windowing interface of the 10.1, go with the N10. I don't need a 300ppi display, but I read that the 1280x800 (or thereabouts) display of the 10.1 is rather middling. Besides, in terms of software updates, I can't help but think the 10.1 will be left behind, while in addition to AOSP updates the N10 will have dozens of options for themed ROMs. Oh, and ignore the benchmarks -- for normal browsing, news/rss reading, media consumption, etc the N10 will be superior.

That was the first updates, that's been fixed long ago, Note 2 like experience now.
I personally don't care about the screen but will still get a Nexus 10, already Own a note 10.1 and an S3.
Right I have the same dilemma.
I guess you have to decide what you want from the tablet, great res screen or the functionality of the stylus.
I've just been into Tesco to have a play and to check out the screen. I've decided to ignore the screen specs and just decide whether it looks good enough for what I want at the price, and the answer is YES IT IS.
You need to see it working and check out the pre-loaded images and videos and just decide if the screen is an issue. For me it looks fine.
You're getting a very powerful device with a unique functionality for £258!
I have a question though that I am hoping the Note 10.1 owners can help me with. I noticed a little lag with the stylus when I first started writing a note. Is this an issue? I wondered if it is a case of there being a bit of a delay to begin with but the device caught up once you started writing. Any feedback on this please?
Thanks
