Before you go bashing me, let me elaborate. Nexus 7 is an outstanding piece of tech at a remarkable price, but lately ive been hauling it with me for no reason. The thing i use on it the most is probably calculator and music, oh and alarm. I feel like it doesnt fit in to my schedule because at school i have a laptop, at home i have a desktop and have to do homework, and when i am on the bus i dont even feel like taking it out because of the damn glare and constant shaking. Does anyone ever feel that with all the thousands of cool apps all these gadgets are ultimately useless, and how do you get over that

Not meaning to be rude or anything but why did you buy one if you have no use for it?
Mainly because i love cool new android gadgets. Dont get me wrong, i use it, but its mostly games and stuff. Which is a waste of time. They make it look so good in the commercial, when in reality its a chore trying to get any actual work done on it.

Nope
I use it to read a lot using the Kindle app. I almost never use the "real" kindle now.
I also like Google Currents a lot. It allows me to read news and such during my commute to work.
All you need to do is utilize its potential. At college I have replaced my netbook with the nexus 7. Office pro allows me to create/edit and use documents that I need. At home I use my nexus for reading, texting, phone calls (tablet talk). Google's voice input allows me to dictate stuff into essays. Class buddy allows me to bring calendars/classes/homework all together with ease. Dropbox works as a virtual SD drive allowing me to access my documents from my nexus/desktop/Uni computer in real time and work seamlessly.
There are loads of things that your tablet can do, try to think out of the box and you will surprise yourself.

I bought one because I knew what it did and that I could use it for personal stuff, work stuff, taking it to the gym. I did my research before I bought it.
I love mine. I use it for everything: note taking, surfing, gaming, watching videos, studying, reading. I think you just need to evaluate why you wanted it in the first place. If you don't have a use for it or you find yourself trying to find a use for it, maybe you should sell it?
I had a laptop that I never used but hate being tied to my desktop. Sold the laptop and use the nexus 7 just about every day.
Not useless to me.

Try to do it differently.
Use your desktop only for tasks that you cannot do on your Nexus 7.
For the rest, do it on your Nexus 7.
Nowadays, I only use my desktop for Adobe LightRoom work and editing video.
Nothing more.

I must say I agree to an extend.
The nexus 7 isn't useless, but I find myself going back to my desktop, AS ITS SO MUCH EASIER TO PERFORM MOST TASKS ON A DEDICATED MACHINE!
Although for stuff like twitter, facebook, XDA etc I generally use my Nexus7, the Nexus7 could be extremely useful, if you didnt mind working on a small screen, but if your like me and just for no reason what so ever end back on your computer, then its not the Nexus 7's fault, ITS YOURS?!
Haha
I use mine all the time and has replaced many uses for laptop/PC jut cos it's quicker and easier. Use it for note taking etc with Drive/Evernote(I like things on the cloud so don't use Office apps) over a laptop, just a matter of getting used to typing which is easy enough for me.

Typing isn't the issue to be honest, you can easily get a bluetooth keyboard, or OTG cable and type effortlessly.
Its just the screen space, it isn't enough to produce word documents and powerpoints etc in my opinion, you need a good clear vision of what you are doing.
No I'm not 60 years old with a vision problem, I just think 7 inch isnt enough to produce good quality documents, its okay for quick edits etc but not for a complete document

I agree entirely, though whole point of it for me is portability and don't want a keyboard with me. I only use it for note taking as I say, which I can present neat enough. Wouldn't use it for building a power point or proper document further than tweaking an already made one.

Yeah I agree, carrying a keyboard aswell is silly.
And you made the point I was trying to get across, but better - Its not good for creating docs etc, its good for tweaks and edits say if you think of something whilst on the train to work, you could quickly and easily add it.
But you wouldn't create the document originally on the Tab.

I parked my laptop at home only undocking it for traveling as Mobile device i only use N7 and love that thing

I love the nexus 7, its so portable and easy to use. When I'm playing video games (lately dark souls) I like to sit back on the bed and have the nexus 7 with me looking and dark souls wiki for strategy guides. It's very neat for games, surfing the web, watching videos and what not. This is my first tablet and im not disappointed with it
I came from a Xoom which is 10" and I find myself using the nexus 7 way more. I love this thing. Desktop is for work, but when I turn that off in the afternoon or on weekends its all nexus 7.

Hello to all people,
I've been reading quite a lot lately about (android) tablets because I want to buy one at last.
I managed to shrink my options to 2: Nexus 10 and Asus Transformer Pad Infinity.
After hard digging about the Infinity in the forums I decided to drop it and go with Nexus 10.
One of the reasons I want a tablet is to make a streamer on the go from it...
I want to connect it to my TV with a HDMI cable to stream some movies.
But from tons of the reviews I read, I only noticed one review mentioning the quality and stability of the streaming. And It wasn't positive.
So I am asking you guys (and girls), what's your experiences on using the tablet this way?
Sorry for my poor English, its not my native language.
Thank you in advance for your answers,
Leon.
HDMI streaming works good. The picture quality is great; however, I do not get any audio through HDMI. This might be a cable issue. Not a big deal since you can output audio through the audio jack.

Just tried it. Works great hooked up to my surround set. I get audio as well so everything works

Thanks for the answer you 2.
Although there is many threads on some issue when streaming via HDMI, like no sound and black stripes on the sides and flickering I was reading....
makes me kinda worry...
Can you make full-screen the tv with no black spaces in the sides? i hate that

Works great on the N10. Don't buy an Asus tablet though. Their software is laggy and buggy as hell, and they don't support their devices. I had a TF201 and it was absolutely nothing but headaches. Stay away from Asus. You've been warned.

Well that's why I said I am choosing Nexus 10 over the Asus one... You are not the only one who suffered, and I read most of the complains people wrote.
I have other question though.
Since I lack the experience on the issue:
How does optical audio cable can be used with an HDMI cable to stream audio from the first and video from the second?
Asking because I have a receiver connected to my 5.1 audio set.
Does work, but mine struggles with higher bitrate 1080p movies over wifi.
There are bars but these may be able to be removed if you get rid of the 3 quick buttons at the bottom, not sure if this is possible with custom software.
Not quite sure what you mean by this comment:
"How does optical audio cable can be used with an HDMI cable to stream audio from the first and video from the second?"

Couldn't agree more. I tried out a TF700 from Amazon for a month, and during that period I had to exchange once from Amazon for a defect in the screen, then send the replacement in for warranty repair because of the same problem. Got it back from warranty 'repair' and it had the same problem in a different location of the screen. Returned them both to Amazon and bought a Nexus 10 from the Play store on launch day.
Couldn't be happier.
I was also amused that the rep claimed they had no prior reports of the screen/bezel problem, when the TF700 threads on here are filled with posts about it. And of course, if you've unlocked your bootloader (using the tool they provide) you have absolved them of any responsibility to repair manufacturing defects that passed through 'quality control' at their factory.

What I meant to ask is this:
I know that Nexus 10 does not posses optical audio port (TOSLINK), so I was wondering what people that want to use this sort of audio output do? Withought forgetting that the HDMI cable is beeing used for the picture and not the sound...

Tried it but doesn't work with my rooted Nexus 10. The screen flashes and stays on instead of turning off.
I connected the Nexus 10 to my TV:
- stereo audio is ok
- bad picture quality (its resizing)
- big black borders at the left and right side
- wrong frame rate on TV - movies look very bad
for me its a no go. Its absolutely not worth it.
I think it certainly must be possible as toslink is digital audio and hdmi outputs digital audio as well. I don't think any conversion would be needed so all you need is someone who makes the cables and takes the audio pinouts from the hdmi and routes them to a toslink cable as well. Unfortunately there isn't exactly a massive demand for such a cable so either find someone who makes the cables or maybe trawl the hi-fi websites to see if anywhere would sell them.

I have two brand new Kindle Fires, but I recently purchased an Asus Transformer so I have no need for them. I was thinking about selling them for about $80 each, but I feel like it is too much work. (I hate selling stuff online)
If anyone could suggest some cool projects that I could do with them I would happily try it out, and even create a picture tutorial.
Both of them are rooted and running CM10 4.1
I have no idea what to start with. But try taking one if them apart and seeing what's in the inside and posting some pictures of it. Then maybe we could find something to do.
I wouldn't mind taking them apart, but that doesnt seem very useful. If I could some ideas first that would be great!

Build a dedicated boombox docking station. Loud speakers, integrated charging, additional storage, music videos and visualizers. It could be a great party and family room accessory.
Or a gaming station. Install several emulators and get a playstation or custom controller. Plus the entire app store. Old school gaming with Open Source possibilities.

Yeah a Car Dock was my first thought but you would indeed have to overcome the lack of GPS. Touchscreen Gmaps, Navigation, and Yelp would be sweet.
Although, there's no microphone on the KF - so no voice activation. Maybe it would be better to leave that to you're phone and leave the KF at home.

I would most definitely put the device to good use for the community here. I need a device to test Factory Cables on, so I can make sure they work beyond just the standard meter test.

That would be a novel idea. If you decide to make one, here's a link for audio equalizer apps. I looked for some graphic apps, but I couldn't find any. I think that it would look cool to have some graphics but maybe just an EQ is what you want. Either way, hope it works out for you!
http://www.androidauthority.com/best-sound-audio-equalizer-apps-android-103890/
P.S. 5-8 gigs isn't a whole lot of room for a boom box. You probably should have Stickmount installed for OTG support.
if you dont end up giving one away, they would be pretty cool as headrest monitors. Port out the headphone jack so passengers could watch whatever they wanted individually, or use DLNA to watch whatever off a carpc. I've currently got my kindle droid attached to the drivers sun visor and plan build a dock for it there if I end up liking it there. A full on computer will go into the dash, and I may end up putting several more tablets in the truck as well.
Yup banned
I have a micro usb to HDMI adapter, I think its a MHL plug. However it doesn't fit.
The Nexus 7 does not support HDMI, MHL, or any type of direct connect video out, period. The microUSB port can be used for USB OTG duties: keyboards, mice, USB Flash memory devices, even USB hard drives if necessary, but not any form of video output.

Actually I did, I've been eyeing the Nexus 7 for a couple of months, reading up on it and looking at reviews. However I never read about HDMI out on it until it occurred to me today.
A reasonable question posted on XDA sometimes receives snarky responses. Not all of them are with ill intent, but this (XDA forums) isn't the most friendly environment. That little ribbing was quite nice though

Well that's quite interesting and I'll be the first to admit when I'm apparently wrong - I'd never seen that video before but it is quite obvious there's some video out going on, and even if it's just mirroring it would still be better than the "nothing" we currently have with the N7. Hell, my laptop has a 1280x800 screen in it so it's a perfect match when I remote in with the N7 anyway... would be nice to do things the other way around.

After watching that full intro video I'm suspecting what they had there was a modified Nexus 7 just for that capability, aka a demo testing unit, but who knows what's possible at this point.
I'd suspect if Google has intentions of a new Nexus 7 "upgraded version" sometime this year - that's the big hope, of course - that perhaps we'll see some extra goodies thrown in for good measure.
But when you really take the big view of things I don't think we'll see a Nexus 7 updated with a) any form of expandable storage (sadly), b) a back camera, c) a video/MHL/HDMI capable output, and d) a change in screen resolution.
If you watch that intro video they are very specific and precise in stating they wanted to make a "perfect content consumption device" and if all you do with the Nexus 7 is "consume content" that means it's going to remain basically as it is right now, perhaps with optional models for more storage (64GB will probably be the max), and they may even stick with Nvidia for a Tegra 4 version, I don't know but I can speculate pretty readily given what we do know from the current 1st gen Nexus 7 models and what Nvidia has announc--errr, leaked about the Tegra 4 so far.
Yes, I do love this tablet, but also yes I wish it did just a tiny bit more in some respects like the ones I pointed out above. I wish the dock pins supported actual data transfer instead of just being charge-and-audio-out capable, but that's just me I suppose.
Regardless, considering I paid $25 for this Nexus 7 of mine, believe me I'm one damned happy camper these days, especially with 4.2.2 now out and battery life even better on the stock kernel if I want it.
Allowing data over the pogo pins would lead to mass corruption. Some dope tries to pogo a rom, bumps their device, done.

They could mirror their nexus 7 display because it had hdmi out on their unit. They didn't add this feature on the nexus 7 because this would raise the price of the nexus 7.

Just get a MK802 and flash CyanogenMod on it.

MK808 is much faster. Highly recommended! Plays games like a boss.
However there is no video out capabilities on the N7 in a last ditch effort to shave off costs.
They are working on wifi streaming... but nothing yet.

I bought that for my laptop a few days ago, and thought, hey I wonder if I can use that on my tablet as a portable screen for plugging composite/s-video devices (ie my gamecube). It hasn't arrived so I thought I'd ask here.
Is it possible? I think it's either an EasyCap or a clone.

Na, likely won't work as-is. The Nexus 10 itself would need some kind of hardcore kernel/driver modifications to make it happen; or you could bypass the N10 motherboard and go straight to the screen, which would need some kind of crazy hookup.
But pretty much, there's no easy (or known) way to make this happen :/

I found this: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/39717-kernel-module-cm-101-easycap-module/ but it's for Nexus 7. also not sure if it has the same USB ID as mentioned in that thread.. guess I'll see if I can get it to work on my linux laptop first, and then go from there.
edit: it just arrived, and the USB ID is the same [05e1:0408]. I ordered a new OTG cable for my nexus 10, my current one has been unreliable. Well I'm gonna try to get it working with my laptop now.
so I got the video to show up. however, it's not very good quality, and has serious lag. I'm going to try it on windows to see if it fixes the lag.
