The next android version will be MAJOR, which means at least 5.0. Besides, who can say for sure it's really gonna be Key Lime Pie? Those who have seen the JB easter egg would have noticed the suprise candy cane which showe every now and then.
That either means android 5.0 will come this Christmas, or that it will be called "Kandy Kane".

People said the exact same thing about JB. I agree that in Al likeliness it will be major, but that hasn't been confirmed.
Also I dunno about "Kandy Kane". Google have never used non-standard spellings so I don't see why they'd start at K. When they get to Q or X, then... Well I guess that could be okay. But there's plenty of things that actually start with K. Never know though.

Did they? I read at lot saying that it would be 4.1. I have a feeling the next android version will be 5.0, though. 4.2 just doesn't make any sense where we're headed. Android has many improvements to make, so it'd be suitable to make some major changes.

I can agree with the "have never", but it's possible they could choose "Kandy Kane", just because they can. Either that, or it'll be released around Christmas. (Why else were there a frozen, non-touchable candy cane among the floating touchable jellybeans? A hint for something.

Knowing Samsung Key Lime Pie will be the last update the S3 gets and you got to ask whether S2 is gonna get it because it easily has the power to handle it.

Quite a lot of sarcasm in this thread. Im sure the op only meant to be informative.

I saw Samsung's Key Lime Pie ROM alpha build. It looks so much like Gingerbread...

I am extremely pleased and satisfied with the way google is moving on. Every update brings something extraordinary, hope google won't disappoint

i hope it brings project grease

i really think google needs to work on perfecting froyo before they even think about rolling out GB, so far i don't think many people are really liking froyo to much, just doesn't seemed all it was hyped up to be to many.

NO WAI did you see the flash light?
I think they should let FroYo die and focus on making GB a better release, especially if they're numbering it as a major version. Honeycomb is nothing more than a name at this point. If they already knew what they wanted to develop for it, they'd just put it in GB.

Personally I enjoy froyo a lot better then eclair and yes maybe it is not perfected however gingerbread is going to be a brand new version of android where as froyo is still a 2.x version of android making the possibilities in advancement greater then on froyo... Why waste time perfecting something when you have something better to perfect?

Think of Froyo like Windows Vista. It had improvements over XP but with a lot of problems too that left most rather unimpressed. So Microsoft decided cut short development of Vista in favor of developing Windows 7 which by-in-large has been well received such that we would like to forget that Vista ever happened. In the same way, I think we will forget about Froyo once Gingerbread releases, provided that it actually is a great remake of Android.
In other words, why waste time perfecting a buggy OS? Just start over. Rethink the OS from scratch with a few lessons learned from previous successes and failures.
Eh...just my $0.02.

Supposedly Gingerbread will completely overhaul the default Android user interface, to the point where HTC was being asked if they would even include Sense on 3.0 (they said they still would, unfortunately...) That's what I'm most excited about Android is pretty B.A. but it's ugly as heck.
Once again why waste time perfecting something when there is something new to perfect

Quick question, so now that the Gingerbread SDK is released,,what does that mean? Do that mean that Devs will start making roms based off that or that the official Gingerbread 2.3 is right around the corner?
Any word on whether or not they decided to use that BlindType keyboard that they bought earlier?
I KNEW IT!! haha thank you

I'm not going to lie. I'm not impressed. Android's copy and paste icons look like something from about 10 years ago to me. I like HTC's version better.
And the updated ui does look a little better now that everything is black with green highlights. Still an ugly ui overall.
It just helps app developers get up to speed. People have tried to do roms from these but they come out very hacky at best. The source for 2.3 is needed for full roms. The is the sdk.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I suppose that HTC has it in development already so they can inlay Sense over top of this. Also, now all the Dev's can start developing their new Rom's with this base. Hopefully Flipz is still on top of his game! No telling how long it will be before Sprint is done with it. I would imagine they will hold up any official update for whatever they have to do. It's just a matter of time now.
I swear I've embedded videos on the forums here ...
Android 2.3 sure looks ugly. I guess I'll be making a theme that makes it look like Froyo.
it means devs can start making apps for it im i think , but knowing xda theyll do their thing and have roms out before the official release

The generic term is gelatin....
Your wikipedia link doesn't even go anywhere, instead it suggests places, like the Jell-o page.....
Jello however has become a genericized brand synonymous with gelatins, much like people often refer to all tissues as "kleenex"
Only Google can have a bunch of people debating about the validity of words pertaining to food and copyrights.

Why wouldn't it make sense? Phones and tablets should require different approaches; or do you just want a phone OS to be lazily scaled up to a tablet? Im sure that a lot or most of the elements of honeycomb will be seen on phones but don't expect all. Besides that, its just names and both are made from the same core.

Ah-hem. iOS.
makes sense as it appears that there is going to be separate software for the tablets and the phones, a principal that i agree with. Tougher on dev's i would imagine but better for consumers which in the end with more adoption potentially would be a larger install base

You do realize that iOS is why I said that, right? Who wants another phone OS scaled up to a tablet. It should take advantage of the form factor and hardware.
they need to make a bigger jump. these little jumps from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3 to 2.4 are retarded. causes even more defragmentation. Should wait and add more functions and upgrades to it, and release them at least 1-2 years apart. Whats the point of updating the ui without actually making it faster and adding some more functions to it.
Have you tried gingerbread? I get better battery life speed is much improved easily go through a day with heavy use
I can't imagine getting an update every 2 years or even 1 fragmentation ia only occurring because manufactures are to lazy to update and take their time google doesn't have hardware limitations so it can be updated like the g1 it runs froyo well

[News] Insider confirms S2 won't get Android 1.6

Just read on galaxys2arsemonkey.com that a Samsung insider claims that there will not be an Android 1.6 release for the Galaxy S2.
Although this hasn't definitely been ruled out by Samsung, it's expected that there will be cries of derision from some S2 owners who want the Donut release to improve battery life, touch screen sensitivity and the disabling of the front camera when accessing Xhamster in case the phone starts taking photographs during inopportune times.
Others claim that Samsung are deliberately not releasing the aging OS version just to deliberately annoy the development scene when one of their ilk complained on a website that 0.0001% of their customer base read and thus causing a PR "**** storm" leading to posts of "**** Samsung".
Anyhoo, if anyone wants to repeat this post a few times in this forum, repeating this same bull**** information, please feel free. It's not like this hasn't been going on all day here.....

Android 4.4

http://www.android.com/kitkat/index.html
Jesus Christ WHERE IS OUR 5.0?
They're ditching it in favor of 'KitKat'. That's their newest OS version. They make it sound like it's something big and nice, according to the release. It falls in line with the rumors of Android spreading beyond the high end smartphone world (Laptops, gaming systems, watches, etc.)
Not sure why they went with the 4.4 moniker, or why they sold out to a brand for 4.4, but this is the latest from Google.
I was hoping it'd be KitKat. I didn't want it to be KLP.

This is awesome news, it's ok that it's not 5.0 a new os name will mean cool new features, I bet 5.0 will be a humongous update but hey I can see htc updating the one to 4.4 so far they are doing ok in bringing us 4.3 soon so it's soon to be official sense 6.0 with android 4.4

I think the best joke is that KitKat's are in fragments... Haha. Isn't Android trying to combat the fragmentation?
I agree. Glad its not 5. But 4.4. Means hopefully everyone getsba piece of the upgrades instead of just nexus devices. I think that is what they were going for anyways.

Why would you want ui changes. That just makes it harder for carriers to push updates in time. If its all under the hood like 4.3 was they can potentially and hopefully push them in a timely fashion.

Maybe because Android as it is has been the same since 4.0 and is getting boring?

Hi,
Seriously...
Just like ios... boring since ages (more than Android updates). Android evolved (about different things, user interface, features, etc...), perhaps slowly, but evolves compared to some other OS...
Compare Android 4.3 from Android 1.* according years to another OS..., maybe 4.* looks like Android 4.2/3 but compares the years too...
