about to flash another ROM, quick question about app data - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I am about to flash another custom ROM, and I was wondering, once I backup my app data with Titanium backup, where should I put it so that when I flash another ROM, it doesn't get wiped? Other than on my computer, I was wondering if there was a way to do this without having to transfer all of my data to it

Flashing a ROM doesn't delete data. What does is clearing data or a factory reset. Some Roms you have to. But in the case of Paranoid Android (my favorite, great hybrid tabui switcher and based on cm10) you don't have to.

Factory reset still does not clear the SD card partition, nothing will touch that unless you do it on purpose (or screw up)

Can I do a restore when on a custom Rom?

Ok I can't find anything to answer this question. Therefore I am asking, because I just don't believe this has been asked be4. I am running Revolution HD 6.3.1. My phone(HTC INSPIRE 4G) sometimes just slows down to a halt. It started about a week ago. I have uninstalled a good many apps, and cleared plenty of space. Prior to rooting, and flashing I had this problem and restoring to factory setting fixed this. Ok now that I've explained that, the Rom(as stated above) I'm on has the option to do this. I want to know if I do this if it will "restore back to just flashed condition" although it says factory condition, but Is a flashed ROM. Will it just simply put, brick my device, or reinstall the Rom as if I had just flashed it. Thanks ahead of time.

Ir you factory reset the phone you will get stuck in the splash screen. If you want to go back to stock, the restore a backup from CWM or flash a stock Rom from CWM. Factory reset does not work in custom roms...

Thanks for that response. I'm not interested in stock at all. I just wanted to know if it would work. Root and flashed Roms are always smoother, even if some of them have bumps. Truthfully I'm waiting on a RC Rom from Existz, as I just want a stock android experience

In CWM wipe data and cache and it should be some sort of factory reset.

No need to start a second thread for this... I'll say it again, have you wiped data in between ROMs? Or what are you doing after installing the ROM if you've wiped it?

Make sure to wipe everything before installing a new ROM, then run fix permissions (advanced options in CWM recovery) from either your recovery or from ROM Manager. After reinstalling all your apps and settings, make sure to fix permissions again.
Wipe system before you install your ROM, in addition to wiping cache, dalvik, data. If you do it right it will work

Typically unnecessary, as it its generally wiped during the install process.

I like to be sure, and I haven't had any problems installing ROMs on my N7, and I've flashed pretty much every one there is, kernels too. There have been ROMs that liked to be flashed 3 times for no real reason, so I say its good practice to manually format partitions, caches etc yourself, even if it's supposed to be done on install. If I do it manually, I know that it has been done

"Cleanest" way to upgrade?

What is the cleanest way to upgrade for Smoothest Rom? I've read its just cleaning cache and dalvic but for others I also read factory resetting makes it so its completely cleaned before upgrading?
So which way is the "cleanest" way to upgrade?
I just wiped both caches and then upgraded to smoothest 5.1. Is this gonna cause problems later?
Please help

Whenever I flash a new rom I always:
Wipe both caches and then Factory Reset
Then I flash the new ROM, it's always a safer bet too.

I do the same and it always works.
The absolute cleanest way to upgrade will always be to format system and data as well as cache before flashing. When you're just updating top a new version of the same ROM, though, that usually isn't necessary.

Factory data reset on rooted phone

Hey, just wanted to find out if using the factory data reset on (in this case) PA 3.92, will unroot the phone, or will it simply just delete all my data/folders/pictures (like a new device) and keep root? Thanks!

itll just delete your data, it wont unroot you.
All PA builds will be rooted by default

All PA builds will be rooted by default, they have integrated superuser into the framework. So you need not worry about rooting after flashing a PA ROM.

Migrate from Kitkat stock to MIUI without data loss.

As the title says, is there any way for me to migrate to miui from stock 4.4.3 without any kind of data loss?
A detailed reply would be beneficial.

You can backup your data from your sdcard and do a nandroid backup, but this will not work with different roms. At least this is my experience. I went from miui to cyanogenmod and it wont accept my backup.
But try titaniumbackup instead if you have rooted your device.

I would try but I don't want to risk losing everything.

Thats totally okay. Do you just want to backup your sdcard storage or the app data? You can restore your app data with titanium backup, but you have to install all your apps manually.
When switching between different roms, backup app datas doesnt make that much sense though
