Samsung left the device after the windows Vista update. I doubt 2 windows updats later they would pick the thing back up and give us new drivers.

Still have not found any drivers looks like i might just have to change out the network card. Any one know how to use the Windows Metro apps with the resolution of 1024x600. I know its under what Microsoft said will work for W8. W8 will work on any resolution but the metro apps will not run unless its 1024x768 and up. I seen some hack but none of them work for W8 RTM.

Synchronize X1 with W7 x86 beta?

I don't have any luck with connecting my X1 to my computer running Windows 7 beta 32-bit.
Windows mobile device center just stops working.
Anyone tried this and got it to work?
It works for me on Windows 7 Beta 32-bit.
I let Windows Update install any software it could find, got the sync centre and devices program up and running.
yep works fine here i just installed the wmdc 6.1 for vista and it works, do you have av or firewall interfering?
Nope crashes Activesync here as well. The phone still connects tho, and can be browsed via explorer
use windows mobile device manager, download that and it will sync fine...i already use Windows 7 to flash, so everything works fine. if you install that
if there is no other way for you labaan, try to use vm-ware and install xp32
into vmware. i`ve flashed one of my phones with vm-ware under server 2003 (32bit).
for example, the nokia software is not installable under 2003. (wrong os error)
vm-ware works (under 2003) fine.

Hey Win 7 users... howz it going so far? I loved the new Beta! it was faster than Vista and more stable too... but i reverted back to vista for the time being. But already Vista is giving me troubles so i'm thinking of moving up again... what say you?

When it's a laptop you wanna install to, i prefer keeping one OS. I just replaced my Vista on the desktop with Windows 7... i guess if that holds fine i'll move to Windows 7 on my laptop as well.

I Love Windows 7, it's what that bloody awful Vista should have been, took me ages to get games to work on Vista without crashing every 10 minutes, and you can notice the speed increase especially on my laptop

Windows 7 is definitely a step in the right direction. An OS that actually will not only be powerful, stable, and fast! but will go head-on with MAC OSX and others in terms of interface!
I love the new wallpaper schemes that lets you set a wallpaper slideshow!
Can't wait to see what they've got planned for Windows 7 for Mobile Devices...

Wow. Even more of an early adopter than I am. I have been running Win7 for a while, but I always dual boot. I used to dual boot Vista and XP but never used XP. Now I dual boot Vista and 7, but I like to stay in 7. I was using the PDC build with the goodies unlocked. Just installed the official beta today and will try to sync soon.

For a start, I agree with others in this thread - w7 is definitely a nice xperiance!
But unfortunately I have still not been able to get my mobile device center to like me. Tried installing wmdc 6.1 for vista 32, but got some error message during installation process stating that 'device not connected'. I'm getting this no matter if my device is connected or not.
On the other hand, when I see in the program list it seems like it was 6.1 that was installed from the beginning?
Even though wmdc crashes when attempt to connect, I get the double arrow on device and I can browse it with explorer on w7. Should be nice to have the sync part work though ...

Thats odd, there was no wmdc installed on mine, just a pointless "sync" control panel.
..Sorry to interrupt your talks.
Are you synchronizing your Device with only 1 PC or 2 PCs?
I refering to another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3161672#post3161672) - with less responses..
while wondering, because for me it seems that no one is really using the synch features.
Maybe somebody will have more news on that strange behaviour.
By the way MS, SE and HTC know the problem.
Cheers
..
I had to disable advanced network mode (aka disable faster data sync) in USB to PC to get it to work. Syncs fine now. I am set up to sync with my exchange server, vista partition of my laptop, and 7 partition of my laptop. (I dont actually sync with my laptop; just set it up to sync so that I dont get the WMDC popup everytime I plug in; I mainly plug in to use for debugging and internet access through PC).

[Q] Which is Faster on the Shift? Windows XP - Windows 7 - Windows Vista - Windows 8

Hi, I am about to get an HTC Shift here soon.
I was wondering which OS to put on the device.
I need to know which OS will run the smoothest. (Videos, gaming, not freezing up, etc.).
I know that there are some people here that know the answer. I'd really appreciate it if any of you can help me out here. Thanks guys!
Also, which would be the fastest version? Home, Tablet, Professional, etc.?

Choose windows 7, Windows xp just doesn't bring what you want due to the lack of good touch input, windows vista is slow. Windows 7 and XP performance are almost the same..
Messing around a bit 7 is best. 8 is beta and weird, XP is old and out of date for touch and such, Vista is a lost cause.
I got a 2gb RAM module for $95 off ebay by trading in my 1gb module. Shop around, you can find great deals.
Soon I am going to load Ubuntu 12.04 on it, I think in the long run of things it might work best, I'll post my findings.
Thanks for your response man. I think I found the correct drivers for Windows 7.
It was a pack I found here on XDA. It's too bad... 99% of the links for the HTC Shift Drivers are all bad.
Actually. I have a question. Would you happen to know if I install Windows 7, will the Windows Mobile part still be there? And also, do you think you could link me to the correct thread where you can use the HTC Shift as a phone?
That would be extremely helpful.

Don't download, Just download the official "Vista" drivers from the HTC Site, and then search for the instructions "how to install windows 7 HTC Shift" you'll get a topic with all the steps you should take. But you do have to download a new wlan driver.
Thanks for your response Armazia. I'll try to look around for the Vista Drivers and the instruction for Windows 7. I tried to look earlier, but I couldn't find it for some reason. I'll give it a shot now.
I couldn't find anything on HTC's site. I found this though. Will this work? - http://driver-pro.com/related/english/hardware-drivers/?a=12226&hit=1

I think its not worth it, since it only has a 800 mhz processor.. You won't really benefit of 2 gb.
I find windows 8 very good, and very snappy. Try it! Its very nice on the huge touch screen.
Best regards
I like the speed and quickness on windows 8. If you disable windows defender and file indexing (search), it runs very quickly. I use the stardock windows 8 menu as well. Has anyone gotten the WM side to be recognized on Windows 8. I was able to get it working on Vista and Windows 7 but having trouble with 8. Anyone have any good incite?
Does anybody know if it is still possible to download the Developer Preview of Windows 8? Microsoft only has links to the Consumer Preview. (Will this still work via the installation guide found here?)
I just ordered a Shift from the 1saleaday/Ben's Outlet for $199. Eagerly awaiting my new gadget!
Success, With a little work you can get the WM part to be visible in Windows 8 and can transfer files.
Once you use the usbtool, on the windows side you might need to repair the network connection (leave wifi off) and it works.
You can also use the SIM card to surf with windows 8 as well.

[Q] will the tablet be able to run .EXE files?

Will the windows 8 surface tablet by microsoft that will be released soon be able to run the softwares I am using right now on my laptop?
.EXE files, desktop, and every basic computer thing, or it will be metro use only?
I'm really confused right now, I installed windows 8 R,P on my laptop and although I got a Metro-mobile.like view, I still have my desktop, my softwares and the whole PC-organized (IDK how to name it)..
So will this be available on the tablet too? (the one that the rumors says is gonna be 200-300$ cheap and fight the Nexus 7 head2head.
Thanks.
The Microsoft Surface which will be available soon will not run your "old Windows" Software. It will be the "little" Surfae which is running Windows 8 RT (ARM based).
Your "old" Windows software compiled for x86/x64 Windows.
The second edition of the Surface - the Surface Pro - is running Windows 8 Pro and this tablet will run all your desktop software.
Oh I see, so I was excited about the Surface for nothing, cuz if its just a Metro like windows phone, we are back to a Big-screen-smartphone-tablet...
I wonder about that "PRO" edition.. I'll look up for it,
Thanks for your answer!
Your welcome.
Microsoft presented four editions of their new tablet.
Two editions for each Windows RT and Windows 8 Pro:
Microsoft Surface (RT) with Windows RT (running on an ARM processor) and 16 or 32 GB which will be available around the official launch of Windows 8 near to october 26th
and
Microsoft Surface Pro with Windows 8 Pro (running an Core i5 [probably]) and 32 or 64 GB which will be available about three months later than the "little" Surface (that would be the end of january 2013)
I would like to correct you posts, Surface PRO will have a desktop, and will able to run your old windows apps.

You did not install RP as that is not available as a download it would of been an x86 version probably pro. The x86 versions are full on windows, I currently ise Enterprise 64bit as my work machine and my home laptop. TBH I spend hardly anytime in the metro interface.
RT will still have the desktop view and limited support for some older style programs - internet explorer desktop mode, office 2013 etc. However you cant install anything outside the marketplace. It will most likely get hacked but if you need old style windows apps you will need to get the windows 8 not windows rt.

This is the last of the beta, sorry I read the t as a p that's my bad. You can get a free trial of rtm (the final build as it will be sold), but once the trial is up you will have to reinstall a proper copy you cant just change the key. I have mine because I have volume license with support as well as TechNet and it is already released to us.

You'll just have to check what processor the tablet comes with, if its anything ARM based then it will NOT run your old software. If its Intel based, probably called an Intel Atom processor then it will run your old software since it uses the traditional x86 instruction set.
Yeah I figured it out, it kinda dissapointing.. I wished the buy the cheap tablet one as my school tablet but it seems now that its gonna be very expensive which make me think back about buying a laptop instead, or stick with my old laptop..

I will note incase any noobs stumble across this that x64 is also x86 its just as its 64bit they like to use it to tell the diff etc.
They are x86 because they come from the 8086 from back in the late 70's and was only 16bit (I say only remember this was still the70's) and that replaced the 8080 (8 bit). The name just followed on (286, 386, 486, Pentium x86).

Problem graphic card windows 8

Hi everybody, i have a big and noisy problem! Today i installed on my desktop pc the ultimate version of windows 8! It'a all great, but here is the problem: i have a ATI RADEON HD 4850 graphic card. I don't know why its fan speed is always at 100% unless i use softwares like speedfan and ohter... so after the installation of the new OS i download speedfan but the graphic cards there isn't.... so i tought it was a problem of drivers, and i installed the last catalyst center (it is possibile decide manually the speed fan even from it) but it can't work!!! it doens't open!!! what can i do???it is too noisy!
i've red somewhere that AMD drop the support for HD4000 series on windows 8... it mean that i ve no possibilities to regulate the speedfan???
no one??? (((((((((((
You made sure you have the right drivers? For my 5750 I think I have w7 drivers but they work find but on my C-60 APU (6290) they're windows 8 ones and CCC looks totally different.

can you try this link..it may help you..http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/amd_catalyst_12.6_legacy_win8.exe
Ok i didnt have the fan problem, but i know how to get Catalyst open . what you have to do is uninstall ALL the drivers. Then, go installing drivers until you find one that catalyst works on (i think it was 9.11 or something). Once that is done, you can update the drivers WITHOUT updating catalyst. If you just update drivers, catalyst still opens perfectly

[Q] Will Windows 7 driver and ccc will work on windows 8?

I am using ati mobility radeon 5650 on a vaio VPCEB46FG and running windows 7 home premium.
When i checked with the Official Windows 8 upgrade tool from microsoft it said that ccc have to be reinstalled, but it showed that device is compatible. The problem is i cannot use the drivers provided by the AMD bcoz of switchable graphics, have to rely on sony for that driver for windows8 compatibility, and they are not releasing the drivers.
So will the drivers for windows 7 and catalyst control center work on windows 8.

I had problems with that on the CP and RP, id might be possible to force the AMD drivers to accept your graphics card as one of their own.
I don't have time just not to go through it all but basically if you look at the amd drivers, you will see an INF file with a list of supported devices and their device IDs, essentially you will replace the device ID of a similar card with your device ID, uninstall the drivers you have, and when you install the AMD ones it should think your device is now supported....
In Theory

ok, we know it is a AMD/ATI chipset, do you know what its based on?
Download the latest AMD drivers for win 8
When you run it, it will copy all the guff it needs to a folder, for example
C:\AMD\AMD_Catalyst_12.9_Beta\Packages\Drivers\Display
you should have two folders
W8_INF
W86A_INF
one is 32bit one is 64bit
lets take the 32bit one, the same applies to 64 anyway
you will see 3 INF files, these are for different versions of windows, id change all three but you should be able to get away with changing
CE146933.INF which is Win 8 version
this file is EPIC in size, the first bit you are looking for looks like this
(This is an example, until I know which card you have I cant be sure which to use)
"%AMD68B8.1%" = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_68B8&SUBSYS_30001002
Note the bold black on the left and the bold red on the right, the red one is a unique ID code for a piece of hardware, the bold black code is a number that is tied to that hardware ID and assigns it a Name, the Green is the important bit and tells it what it install. In short, if that hardware ID was detected it would load the driver settings for the device "AMD68B8.1" using settings ati2mtag_Evergreen
if you look at the very bottom of the INF you can see a list of what those codes mean, in this example it translates to
AMD68B8.1 = "AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series"
What is happening at the moment is that the driver is loading, and not detecting the hardware ID, because its not listed it fails to install
what we want to do is to fool the driver in to thinking that your hardware ID IS in the driver.
in theory its simple, in practice there can be a number of things that stop it working, like getting CCC working may be an issue but there you have it, that's the basics of what you can try, it may not work though so don't hold your breath
I had to jump through a crazy number of hoops to get AMD's drivers working on my notebook's 5650 with switchable graphics - and it's unfortunately all because AMD insist on running pre-installation checks. The drivers work, but they don't let you use them.
It eventually worked when updated my notebook from 7 to the RP, and chose to keep drivers installed during the process. I then reinstalled CCC, as the update wiped it out. My driver version is 8.692.1.0, and is dated 22/01/2010.
Switchable graphics works, but I can't right click on the desktop to open the program. I need to run CCC, and then navigate to switchable graphics.
I highly recommend this approach of using switchable graphics - if it works for you. AMD drivers for this are an unmitigated disaster, and any attempts to get a better situation may leave you worse off. Expect lots and lots of 'Install was successful' messages - even though nothing was actually done at all.
If your Windows 7 GPU drivers are working in Windows 8, you'll see the following in Device Manager:
-When GPU is disabled, "Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator HD" appears in Device Manager.
-When using the GPU, "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650" and the above Intel graphics appear under Device Manager.
Remember that your Intel drivers must be working too - they're part of the switchable graphics. If you see 'engineering sample' or anything next to the driver name, then something is probably wrong.
Anyway, this is just confirming that W7 drivers do work perfectly, if you bypass the OS version check.
If you manage to get W8 drivers to have switchable graphics, that's excellent.
I'll be happily updating my notebook to the full W8 release in about 2 weeks. I am expecting great pain.
The CCC I used was the CCC pro off of their website. I ran all the apps in w7 compatibility mode. Took about 1-2 days. I'm running a never released ati 4600 series so I designed my drivers.... it was very fun

SOLUTION :- go to device manager and right click the desired device to click " update drivers" and it will automatically search interne tfor the drivers and everything will work fine !!
I tried this method after installing all the available updates from the microsoft through windows update service !!
Running DELL Vostro 1550
Click to collapse
are you using ATI MOBILITY RADEON graphics 5650 card?
I think your solution will work, bcoz windows is saying that graphics card is compatible with windows 8, but only thing it says is ccc has to be reinstalled..
I ve not bought windows 8 for now. So those who use the vaio VPCE series please try windows update or install the drivers from sony and report back..
