Okay, Im pretty frustrated right now. Ive been looking all over the places for a solution to share file between my win7 pc & win8 tablet.
At the start, I could use the tablet to connect to my files on pc but not vise versa. Though after some twitching with Sharing setting, now I cant even connect to anything, both win 7 & 8...
The normal old way was to set the same name for workgroup doesnt work anymore, so I created a homegroup & got both devices to join but theres seem to be no different, I cant even open shared libraries.
And I believe all sharing settings are correct (network discovery on, file sharing on, use user account to connect, 128bit encryption, password protected sharing off).
Anyone got any other ideas? xD
I remember having similar issues sharing between two computers running 7. Ultimately it came down to the individual permission settings for whatever you are trying to share. I think I had to change the permissions and take ownership of any items I was trying to share. Otherwise when you try to access a devices, it uses that computer's credentials, and if that user account does not explicitly own those files/directories, that's when issues pop up.
Otherwise, what error messages are you getting when you try to access files?
Well, I did set permission to Full Control and even add specific homegroup users, but its still no use. Everytime I tried to access the files, I got the No permission error (not accessible)
Also, I just notice that the status in the folder Sharing tab is still "Not shared" even though theres a shared icon on the folder xD
turn off simple file sharing,
theres nothing simple about it, other than the fact that in all my years of sorting this stuff out it has normally been the main problem and thus simple to fix by turning it off.... that and DNS issues but that's not the issue here
so, clear all the crap you have done to do with sharing and folder permissions etc
go to the CP>folder options>view>untick sharing wizard its called simple file sharing in earlier OS versions.
and start again.

Hi every one,
im using V-Mobile Software Network Browser on my k-jam to try to connect to my wireless network, so far im having no luck. i can connect to the internet ok but when i use Network Browser it just shows my network as unknown and does not list any of the computers on the network. has anyone had any luck with connecting to there wireless network to access resources on there computer if so please let me know how lol.

After a lot of fiddling about and a great deal of searching on these forums, (which takes forever trying to figure out how other people have reffered to ones problem) Yes, Resco Explorer, there is a manual on their website which explains how to map network drive. But easier and free, internet explorer, in address bar type //your machine name and return.
This of course assumes you have set up a shared folder and guest usage on your pc. Aleternatively you can just bang your head on the keyboard for 2 days until you don't care anymore! Which was my first course of action.

Top tip but it does not seem to work on my Vario... that been said I wonder if you create a short cut if you can by pass IE altogether ?

i know its an obvious solution, but as you dont say you have done it already:
[*] Assuming you are ruinning winXP - run the network setup wizard and enable file & print sharing (and share a folder or 2)
[*] If not running XP, either use the XP wizard (if you have an XP CD or friend who has one) or manually setup wookgroup LAN, enable file & print sharing and share a folder
Oh, and make sure you dont have any firewalls getting in the way (windows XP inbuilt one "should" automatically open the file sharing when the network wizard is run)

... I think what it is that I have a VERY secure network / domain here ( Deal with IT security you see )... so if I remove security I'll bet it will work.. just not had time to try.

yes you can
but not an activesync connection.
you basically have to get on the WIFI network (VPN not necessary unless you are external of the network and/or behind firewalls).
then its a question of what you want to do, the WIFI network gets you on to it using WEP or WPA SPK I think (we use WEP at home and work).
if you want to connect to your laptop, create a mapped drive then you can copy and paste backwards and forwards.
you can run terminal server to control your PC or connnect to a terminal server, or connect to SBS with administrator priverlidges.
The question is, if you connected, what do you want to do. You cannot activesync, but you might like to try streaming music or other bandwidth consuming activities...

Activesync cannt be done over WIFI, 2003 allowed it not WM2005.
You can share a folder on your PC, and thus place files in and out of that using WIFI. Generally though, I found it more efficient to use an SD card with a USB memory reader to transfer files, much quicker read/write. Usually I want to put pictures or videos back the other way anyway. some pc's and laptops come with memory card readers anyway.
ON your PC' find a folder, right mouse click and share it with a share name. Make sure you know the name of the machine, eg my computers name is TLA-DELL1 for work, and home is the name of my daughter. If you havent named your machine it will have some dodgy obscure pathetic name issued by the manufacturer. You can get this from system in control panel.
On your PDA, start your WIFI.
Using Resco explorer hopefully you have it, map a net work drive. You can try the standard file explorer, but I dont like it. Total commander can also do it. In the share address use:
\\computername\foldersharename
note the double backslash.
Enter usernames and passwords as appropriate.
Now, the pain in the arse bit.... do you have a firewall? This is where it can get tricky.
The other thing you can do is if you are running XP Pro (if not, I recommend it), you can also go into control panel > system on the tab called remote connection, you can tick a box that allows you to take control and use your machine on your PDA using Terminal Server. This allows you to access all the resources and facilities that your machine has as if you were sitting at the console, including the power and processing speed of your computer.
Only downside, the screen is much much smaller than your computer, so getting around it can be painful.
Once you have enabled your machine to allow the connection, its simply a matter of starting wifi, programs > terminal services, and enter the IP address or computer name of your laptop to connect to it, and it should open then a log on name for you to start using your machine.
A further feature, which I dont use and cannot advise how to, but read about it here, is to "stream" mp3's from your laptop to your PDA so you can play music on your PDA based upon music on your machine rather than having to copy it.
In relation to sending files to your computer, if all else fails, I ahve two extra email accounts on my PDA a hotmail account, a POP3 account, and if in times of need, a GMAIL account, all of which allow me to email particular files anywhere I want using any WIFI connection. I use this when all else fails.....

I am having a problem accessing XP shares on my LAN via WM2003. I was able to access them several weeks ago by using Total Commander. It prompted for the hostname and then for the username and password. I simply logged in as guest without a password since these shares were had full read access for all users. I was able to access all shares on my LAN for a few days until it mysteriously stopped working.
I deleted and added the locations again in Total Commander, yet it never prompted me for a username/password again, and when I go to the share, it simply shows a blank folder. This happens whether I am trying to access it with the hostname or IP address, neither will work. Sometimes I have received an "error 53" when trying to connect as well. I have tried using File Explorer and even Resco File Explorer to no avail. All of the hosts on the network show up in PocketLAN but I am completely unable to browse them.
Should I somehow remove the guest login information I originally entered when I was first able to connect to the share? Is there somewhere in the registry this information is stored, as I have been unable to find anything about it. From various message boards, this seems to be a fairly common problem, yet no one has been able to provide any solution for it.
I really am at a loss as to why this is happening. Can anyone offer insight?
Hi. I don't seem able to access any of my shared folders on my home network since upgrading to Win 7 on my PC and the Energy ROM on my HD2.
I've tried using Resco explorer (it says 'no computers on network') and total commander. I've also tried adding the folders using their network addresses e.g. \\Lounge-PC\My Docs(E) but it doesn't work either.
I have a desktop and two laptops all running Win 7 and they share a home network using a CISCO wireless router; all are able to share files and folders.
Any help or advice gratefully accepted.

can you see them through the TCPMP open file dialog?
Try option: Map Drive
Menu>File>Network>Map Drive
after add you will see folders in : my network

That is how I usually connect to my shared drives but now I get the message 'no computers on network' in Resco and Total Commander doesn't show and network PCs either.
- Make sure Wifi is connected on the HD2...
- In Resco's network folder, select new folder like usual to add a share, menu->settings, check there is ONLY the IP/mask of your wifi, not the one of the data connection. If both are there, untick automatic settings, and remove the WWAN one.
Should solve it. Otherwise if you have wifi AND data connected it will try to search for computers on WWAN, which would take days...
So you can definately connect to the ahred folders from other pc's its just connecting from the phone that is the problem?
If you go to this page in your control panel on the computer with a shared folder:
Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings
check that the settings are enabled like so:
network discovery: on
file and printer sharing: on
sharing so anyone on network can read: on
128bit encryption: on
password protectged sharing: off (or on if you have a password on that pc, if its on and there is no password on that pc then you cant login and therefore cant connect to the shared folder)
Inore homegroup stuff.
after all of this is set correctly and you are sure some folder is being shared on the pc you are trying to connect to then go to tcpmp and go to File>open File and then go to \\<PC-NAME-HERE>\ ie \\Lounge-PC\ as you mentioned earlier.
tcpmp should prompt you for a un/pw if you have none for this pc just click login/connect (cant remember what the button says) and then ytou should see your folders/files?
see how you do with that and we can then try and see why you cant see them in explorer.
It's probably because of Windows 7 Home Group. It's a pain in the arse to get normal file sharing working be default..
Android has an app named "ES File Explorer" that lets you connect to a Windows Homegroup shared folder, and upload or download files. You must have Wi-Fi in your home or office, so the Android can connect to the wireless network. The Android app connects to the shared folder. This process is useful if you lost your USB cable and cannot connect to the local desktop using a cable.
Step 1
Click the "Computer" icon in the Windows "Start" menu. Right-click the folder or drive you want to use to share files with the Android device. Click "Add a network location." A configuration window opens.
Step 2
Click "Next" in the opened window that displays the computer's IP location. Type a username and password for folder access and a name that displays in the list of networks on the Android. Click "Finish" to set up the sharing on Windows.
Step 3
Tap the "Settings" button on your Android device. Tap the "Wireless and Networks" option. Tap "Wi-Fi Settings" and select a Wi-Fi hotspot name to connect. If a password is required, type the password and click "Connect" to connect to the network.
Step 4
Tap the ES File Explorer icon on your Android's home screen. Tap the "LAN" tab to create a new connection. Tap "New" to open a configuration window. Tap "Scan" to automatically scan the list of open networks.

Tap the network name you set up earlier on your Windows computer. Type the username and password to access the shared resource. The Android app returns to the main screen. Tap the "Local" tab to see a list of files on the Android.
Step 6
Tap a file you want to transfer. Choose an activity from the list. For instance, tap "Copy" to copy the file to your Windows computer.
Ya can even do this through File Explorer HD(which i use) and ASTRO File Explore.
Be careful when "moving" files with ES file explorer... I moved a nandroid backup, from internal to external with ES, and it deleted it instead... Other users have been having issues if you take a look at their support forum - but nothing's fixed yet.
I think it's only large files that it gets confused with.
I've had pretty good luck with it but have only done copies but not moves.

Why is my entire C drive read/write from my android? Ive set all but one folder on the drive as 'not shared.' ....
Also, since while on the topic, does anyone know how to map the android phone in network map. Its not viewable anywhere on the pc as connected.

I've been unlucky too but learned that in android terminology.
MOVE = Cut + paste
COPY = copy + paste
Always copy when using android.

I have enough experience with esfile explorer to know how to add computers to the LAN section... so far its been pretty easy to user the computers username and password. In my case, all my computers have the same username and password. But when I try to add another tablet thats on the network (like my wifes) im able to put in the IP address, but I cant figure out what to put as the username and password. Does anyone know how to obtain a username and password from a tablet device to add to ES File Explorers LAN list? Even for a smart phone? And it wont take anonymous. But I know that we don't have usernames or password with out tablets and phones as far as I know, so im at a loss as to know where to start even looking.
You can install an app like Samba
Samba will let you share files on a network from any android device and gives you the option to add a username and password. There may be other better options out there but I've used this with decent success. It seems to have problems with large files sometimes but I'm not sure if that's an issue on the ESFile end or Samba end.

What Exactly Does It Do???
Hey i've done it, used it... and it's great, It is like my android have 500GB of hard disk space when i'm home..
But questions are there... how does this connect to the pc, it's not a part of homegroup it does not show there, even if my libraries are not at sharing, i can still see them in android, in fact i see them no matter what.. I use my PC log in password and user name to connect this, NOT my homegroup password...
What exactly is this?? anyone who knows... plz explain
Edit: Also that i don't have to install any client on my PC, This is a true wireless connection... But i cannot track it from PC, i can copy anything from pc without my pc knowing it.. SCARY

There are several great file managers that can access Samba shares. I use ES and FolderSync. But I would prefer to manage shares somehow centrally so that they can be used in any app on my android device. Does anybody know such a kind of app that creates system wide usable shares?

I've noticed this using fx explorer too. I can log in to my home pc wirelessly using the same username and password and can see a C$ folder (which is my entire pc harddisk) and even though it's not shared at all or on any home group i can access it with my phone!!
