I want to rot my Nexus 7. I know how to but I want to be able to keep my data, or back it up so that when I unlock the boot loader I will be able to get it back. Is there a way I can do this so it will be just how it was except rooted? Thanks for your help!

I sold my iPhone 4 today and bought a brand new nexus s. I'm not new to android though, I used to own a nexus one before iPhone 4.
My question is that I want to install custom roms on it, but I might want to restore it back to original factory settings in case I want to return it to best buy. How can I backup my phone so that best buy would take the phone back without questions?
I saw a thread to root the phone without unlocking the bootloader. Is that what I should do? Any help is appreciated!

Just root and do a nandroid backup. If you use rom manager to install the custom recovery you can just use it to so the backup.

Go to the Samsung nexus s android development section. Look for the thread that begins with Odin 1.81... bookmark that thread. That thread will help you flash completely back to stock. And always make sure you relock your bootloader.

The only advantage of not unlocking the bootloader is to avoid a full wipe of your internal storage such as pics, music etc. However custom roms or apps may have stability issues without an unlocked bootloader. No harm in unlocking the bootloader because you can always lock it again. Just make sure you back up any files you may want to keep.

I agree that the only advantage to not unlocking the bootloader is to avoid a full wipe and loss of all data.
I'm curious if you can point to an example of any current existing ROM that displays issues because the bootloader is locked... if so, I need to add that information to the non-unlock method instructions.
Sorry I don't. I was just quoting one of the root guides in here. But then again there's always that IF. Now that I think about it, unlocking the bootloader is to be able to install root and a custom recovery. If you can do that without unlocking the bootloader then you should still be golden. Don't see why a rom or app would be dependent on the bootloader. Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah, we've found no reason to HAVE-TO unlock it yet. Just to be clear, I wasn't challenging you, just looking for anything I might need to add to the guide on doing it without the unlock. I already have a caveat that it might be an issue for something, but don't know what something could be.
Anyways, if you're a fresh out of the box phone, no problems unlock method, since you have no data to lose in the wipe. For late-comers, the no unlock method spares them that data wipe. The beauty of it is that you can root and install titainium or other backup software without wiping the phone if you already have data on it, and then if needed you can always unlock it and re-root, and then restore your wiped data. Best of both worlds for some.
Pretty much exactly what happened to me Distorted loop, Very thankfull for that non wipe root method, definately saved my ass as i had a good play with the phone before getting it to a PC for backup/rooting.
I am going to swap my device for another tommorrow to confirm if my reboot issue is even remotely hardware related. So i will have 30 mins with no nexus s ...s'gonna kill me as i love this lil thing (even with my calling problems).
Looking forward to a nice stable nexus, and then i'll try out some of the mods and roms (still on stock for now)
First Nexus phone, and I'm really loving stock so far.. Did you unlock your boot loader? And if you did, for what reason? Try to convince me! Ahhh..

I unlocked it for the sole purpose of having it unlocked in case I need it done later. I'd rather not have to worry about losing everything just because I suddenly need CWM or root access.

This. First thing I always do with a new Nexus device is unlock the boot loader, since doing so erases your phone and I don't want to start over with setting everything up. I also rooted, but I still would have unlocked the boot loader just to get it out of the way, even if I wasn't rooting. There are no downsides.
Also, a quick PSA: I also unlocked the boot loader on my N10, and after doing so, I immediately got stuck on the Nexus flashing "X" logo. If this happens on the N4 when unlocking (or the N10, obviously), the following should fix it:
1. Reboot into Fast Boot
2. Select Recovery using volume rocker. Hit power to select. You'll get the android mascot with the red exclamation point.
4. Press Power and Volume Up at the same time (this is the side of the volume rocker that is away from the power button for those new to the device on the N10).
5. Choose to wipe all data. Confirm the selection.
6. Reboot.
I didn't wipe using recovery but I just went back into the bootloader and reflashed the factory image.
In hindsight it would have been easier to wipe.

Just to add, if you ever need to re-lock the BL, all you have to do is type fastboot oem lock
No reason to right now IMO, only thing I kind of want to do is root (for adfree) but until CM10.2 comes out I'm not in a rush to mess around with roms.
Yep but I ain't rooted - I'll stick with stock for now & receive the official updates
When mine comes ill leave it blank for a bit (few days) so I don't loose anything when I root
Can Google tell when you have relocked it?

I didn't. I heard that if you unlock you bootloader/root you can't upload photosphere pictures to G+ anymore. I wanted to take a few pictures first then root it. I don't have too many things on my phone now it won't be too much of trouble when I unlock the bootloader/root it.

No, they cannot, unless you are unable to relock it for some reason.
Is there any downside to unlocking the boot loader?
I am receiving my Nexus some time today, and it will be my first Android phone. I may decide down the road to put a custom ROM on it, so does it make sense to unlock it now and get it out of the way?

No downside, you will still get OTA updates.
Do it now, save the data wipe.
i need some help im thinking of Unlocking the bootloader and rooting. But I heard this erases data. How or can I back up all apps and there data.
Plus after this could I unvoid the warrenty by going back to stock and re-locking the bootloader?
You can use Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit to perform an ADB backup without having rooted the device.
To answer your other question, yes you can relock the boot loader and return to the stock rom.

If it is only matter for the APPs. easy way is to use google play, under your account name. They are all saved (once you downloaded them the first time) for further back up one a single clic.
No a solution for data. but most of the time no real need for apps/data backup.
Hello, this is a question for the development forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475 but I'm new here so it doesn't allow me to post there yet (could a mod move this there please?):
I'm trying to root my Nexus7 4.2.1 using the Nexus root toolkit and it all goes fine until the part where I'm supposed to backup data/media. It pops up a dialog saying that on 4.2.1 you need root access for this. But I'm trying to back this up BEFORE it gets wiped so I can unlock it and get root access.
Can someone please help?

I'm certainly far from an expert or a dev myself so if I'm wrong here someone point it out, but from my understanding of your question the things you're looking to do need to be done in a certain order to work at all. Unlocking the bootloader will wipe your device and in order to install a custom recovery which will do your back up, you need to be unlocked and rooted. So unfortunately by default your device has to be wiped before any real fun can be had. Its a necessary Android evil.
You could hook up your USB cable then copy everything on you device to your computer and you should have all of your app data, music, videos or any other files and your apps should be backed up on your Google account and then transfer everything back and there is all of your stuff!

Dear all,
I am a noob to android (just bought a nexus 10 and nexus 5 this month) I decided to root my devices. My nexus 10 was originally rooted with 4.3 and today an update popped up for 4.4. so I clicked restart and install, Now its stuck on the boot-up screen with the 4 dots moving around.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2419292&stc=1&d=1385608235
How do I get it to start on 4.4. I do not mind losing all my stuff.. I also don't mind the stock android, as i never installed any custom roms.
I was a previous iOS user and thought it'd be fine to just update like I did on my jailbroken iOS device.
I would greatly appreciate if someone could give me simple steps to follow..
I'm really sorry if this question has been previously asked but I searched and everyone with my problem have uploaded screenshots of their computer.. i didnt use a computer to update..
I want to just wipe data/factory reset from the boot setting but I don't want to screw things up before confirming with you guys. Also I've got clockworkMod incase thats important
Thanks a lot for all the help!
The update would have worked fine if you didn't have clock work mid installed. First thing to try to fix it is go into clock work mod recovery (hold power and volume buttons) then you can do a factory reset from there. If it still doesn't boot then just download wugfreshs toolkit. It will do it for you. I would tell you how to manually do it but since your new to android it may be better to get it done using a toolkit which is easier. In his toolkit there is an option for return to stock and from there just follow the instructions. You can search for wugs toolkit for nexus 10 and it should come up.
