Greetings, i have my kindle fire rooted since I got it (December last year) I I've yet to find a way to update twrp, i'm still in version 2.0.0 however I can flash jb with no issues, kfu 0.9.6 can't see my device no more, guess because of the custom ROM... I've read something about smirkit but I can't find any info on where to install or download... tnx for your help.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using xda app-developers app
Here's the smirk it link, but before u attempt this, go to the market and download busybox, and terminal emulator( probably already have it)and goo manager
Go to goo manager tab browser all files then devs/smirkis/ and download the smirkit installer, and flash in recover after words!
Thanks for your answer... however it didn't work, first terminal on this rom fc's every time, and the smirk.zip didn't install any app (or so it seems)
I haven't checked, but it's quite possible Terminal Emulator doesn't work on JB. You could make a backup and switch to ICS just long enough to run the script and install TWRP.
The smirkit.zip doesn't "install" anything. You unzip it to, say, your downloads folder and run the script in the Terminal, remembering the /path/to the actual script you want ran.
The easiest was would be to extract the smirkit to somewhere on your sdcard, then move it to the root of the sdcard, so when in terminal you would do
cd/ sdcard
smirkit
Back to ICS? That seems bothersome but I guess is the only way to update twrp, I,l get to it as soon a I can thanks for your replies!

Okay, I rooted my N1 with Universal Androot and removed the stock Froyo Twitter app without backing it up. (Shame on me.) Now, I can't update to 2.2.1 because of it (a status 7 error complaining about not finding /system/app/Twitter.apk)
I have, at the advice of some other forum posts I've read, installed Twitter from Android Market and backed it up to the sd. Renamed it Twitter.apk and used the Terminal Emulator to copy it to /system/app. That worked and the file is there, but the update still will not apply. Do I also need a .odex file? Is there any way to update at this point?
Any help would be super appreciated. THANKS!
if this is the new twitter app would you be kindly enough to share it..lol

grab it from an older update like from frf91 update.. then do adb push /system/app
if you cant do that...
put the twitter app in sdcard then go to terminal and do
cp /sdcard/twitter /system/app
reboot then apply it.. i had trouble with amazon and i did it that way and it worked well

That's exactly what I did. It didn't work.
I'd love to pull the app from a FRF91 build but I have no idea how that's done.

It looks as though I can't flash the GAPPS without unlocking the bootloader and installing a new recovery, correct? I'm really not that motivated if that's the case. I appreciate the information.
OK, just download the GAPPS, then use something like estrongs file manager to unzip to a folder of choice (with estrongs, longpress and select extract).
The Twitter apk will be in the extract folder/system/app. Just click the apk to install...

BTW, if you have root, you may as well install a custom recovery (without touching the bootloader).
Easy way with ROM Manager (has Clockworkmod and Amon-Ra), or use adb if you wanna learn something...

Thanks for the tips. I'll check it out tomorrow when I can make a data transfer. I am doubtful that installing from the zip will solve much since I already loaded the app and its already in the system folder.
could someone verify whether or not the Twitter app has a corresponding odex file that I might need?
I ran into the same problem when I removed Amazon Mp3, but I was impatient so I ended up reflashing the stock rom and then updating.
There is a thread that has all n1 updates look for it and download froyo fr91 update then unzip it go to system app and look for twitter apk then put in sdcard and do commands again .. I tried to do with market twitter and it failed so I did it the way I'm explained andnworkd

You sir, have saved my life. I swear I used that same exact Twitter.apk but I must not have. I used 3 different apks all with the same result but the one in the zip I found somewhere in this forum worked perfectly. I appreciate all the help and feel like such a 'tard for not trying something so seemingly simple earlier.

A) Before using the Kindle Fire Utility to install TWRP, I DO need to uninstall BurritoRoot on my Kindle, correct?
B) Since I'm going to lose all my apps anyway, should I delete the ones that are not necessary for the process?
C and D) I do actually use my Fire to read PDF books, will Adobe Reader still work as it should? Where do I put the files when I transfer them from my computer to my Kindle?
I've got everything downloaded and ready to roll. I'm going to bed and plan on flashing in the morning, just need these questions answered before I do. Thanks.
A) I rooted before I even knew what TWRP was, so no.
B) You could if you want to.
C) I don't know, but I could test it.
D) The update.zip and gapps? You could put them on the root of your "sdcard," or you could create a folder for them.
UPDATE: I tested Adobe Reader and it seems to work fine.

I rooted with BurritoRoot, and yes, I found out that I do need to uninstall it before I use the Kindle Utility to install TWRP(v. 0.9).
Is there anything else I need to do before I do this?
Not the gapps, the PDFs I want to read in Adobe reader, where would I place those is transferring from my computer?
Sorry for all the questions I just want to be thorough and make sure I have every single thing right.
Thanks
Did you install the drivers that came with the Kindle Fire Utility? Do you have 0x18D1 at the end of the adb_usb.ini file? Those steps helped me most when my first install of TWRP2 wasn't done correctly. An extra step I took was downloading techerrata.com/file/twrp2/twrp-blaze-2.0.0RC0.img and adding it to the recovery folder of the KFU. Then I renamed it to twrp.img and the other to twrp.img.bak. I don't know if that helped, but after all of that was covered my second install was successful.
You could put your PDFs in a folder on your kindle. It doesn't matter really, as long as it is some place you can find them. Hopefully this helps you and if you have anymore questions I'll be glad to answer them if I can.
- il Stalk3r li
You would place your PDF files on the SD card (the file system you can access from your computer when you connect via USB) either in the root or a folder such as books.
You would then install PDF reader or Kindle reader from the market in order to read the files.
Finally, install a good file manager (or if you are installing an alternate rom such as CM7 it comes with one) such as ES file explorer (free) or Root Explorer (paid). Navigate to your files and click on the one you want to open. A popup may ask you to choose your reader if you have both the above installed. Adobe will keep a list of recently opened files so you will not have to go through the file manager again for any previously accessed docs.

Hi all!
First off, I'm new to xda Developers so please excuse me if this is in the wrong forum! I thought I'd post information about a tool I wrote here which roots stock 4.0.3 leak on the A500, A501 and assumingly the A200 too. Its literally one click - just enable USB debugging. "ICS Root" also installs, optionally, FaceLock and Trebuchet (although FaceLock doesn't want to work. It lets you set it up though =P)
Since version 5.0.1 this also now works with the new 0.022.00 leak!
The full post is over at TegraOwners: http://forum.tegraowners.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=350
The only real system requirements are Windows (with .Net Framework 4) and an Iconia on the stock 4.0.3 leak. I hope somebody finds this useful its been tested by myself and a couple of TegraOwners users and it works well.
In terms of the technique used, it uses the great Jay Freeman's mempodroid exploit to gain root at which point it mounts /system rw and installs su, busybox and Superuser.apk so no real surprises there. Installing Trebuchet adds that apk to /system/app and installing FaceLock installs the apk to /system/app before installing the pittpatt folder to the flexrom (mounted as /system/vendor). I plan to open source it when all the requested features have been implemented and the code has been cleaned up.
Thanks!

cwm version?
why would it not work with cwm version?
With this tool does system remain writeable after rooting?
What about flashing CWM with acer recovery installer once rooted? I guess it would screw the bootloader...

If you are on the cwm with the HC boot loader it should work as Its Magic will be run..
if you are on the new boot loader as in the full non modded leak.. It will give you secure boot error ..
The new boot loader Blocks its magic.
Thanks
Hey this worked easy. I had to re-install USB drivers and make sure I had the latest from Google. Other then that, hit the button, wait about 1.5 minutes, and it rebooted! No problems thus far! Thanks Again!

After reading the other post, I have found that I cannot write to the system directory from the device itself. The folder attributes indicate that it is set to write, however File Explorer HD will not let me. I have tried to create a folder in the /system and it will not accept the addition. The strange thing is that Root Check says it is rooted, File Explorer HD accepts putting it into Root Explore, but that is it. It is odd. I will try to reapply the Root to see if that makes a difference.

Please, read the op before bringing this up. This method is for half root, its the only way possible right now on stock leak ics. There is a special script you need to use to mpunt system. You can find it in the stock leak thread, run it in terminal or use rom toolbox and set it as a script to run at boot because rebooting loses write privileges.

Version 3 came out this morning
It features some bug fixes as well as a completely new remount menu which mounts /system rw properly on the fly. Tested with a busybox installer app
Enjoy!
Thanks for your tool blackthund3r !
I tried it with the new leak from this morning and it doesn't seem to work anymore
Edit :
Just to be a little more specific, the app says the process was OK and state that the tablet is rooted but the tablet doesn't reboot by itseld and su is not installed. I tried to install su manually but it's unable to find a previous su package on the system.

ah okay it appears a completely new leak has been released. It is possible that the mempodroid exploit has been patched up. I'm gonna look into it soon. I can't much tonight - I have school work. I'll see what can be done and what the differences between leaks are.

Hi blackthund3r
Thanks for the update 3.1 but could you please fix the problem on your hosting website? clicking on this file send to an error warning.
The other files can be downloaded though.
can someone post a mirror to the 3.1 version? current link is not working.
can somebody also confirm, if i root with this tool, i will be able to reinstall my clockworkmod recovery through 'acer recovery installer' and flash any other cwm rom? or do i have to downgrade to honeycomb 3.01, install iconiaroot for honeycomb and then acer recovery installer?
Gersma,
I'll be able to answer to your question as soon as I'll be able to download this tool and test it.
So I have a Nexus 7 32GB wifi and I unlocked the bootloader and rooted it last night and had CWM touch installed. The problem is, when I boot the tablet back into recovery, it doesn't load CWM, it just displays the stock recovery screen with a weird android logo.
What I'd like to accomplish at this point is to install the latest version of CWM Touch 6.0.1.9, which I already downloaded from the official site, it seems to be an img file, and after all that is done, I'd like to install the latest version of CleanROM.
I have no access to a computer at this time, so would this still be possible?
Can anybody please walk me through it?
so I acutally managed to download cwm from the market, and it installed, its not the touch version, but it works. I also used es file explorer and went into the system folder, and renamed the recover-from-boot.p file.
Now, what I'd like to do is install cwm touch, but I only have an img file of it downloaded, any ideas on how i can install it without a pc?
have you tried the Rom Manager app, is that how you installed CWM from the market? Rom Manager might have the touch version, but i haven't looked myself.
otherwise, you could probably install the .img file using Terminal Emulator on the phone. sorry i can't give you the exact command, but it would be a dd command and you would need to know the name of the recovery partition to write the image file to.

So yea...I got rom manager from the market, and installed cwm that way, its not the touch version, but it was enough for me to install CleanRom 3.0
Now, regarding Rom manager, it has an option to flash the latest recovery mod, and I used es file explorer and found the following directory:
/sdcard/clockworkmod/download/download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/
inside was the following file:
recovery-clockwork-6.01.9-grouper.img
Now, I wonder if I can simply replace that img file with the following:
recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.9-grouper.img
would I need to rename it and remove the touch part of the file name?
I was thinking of just replacing and flashing via rom manager, you think it'll work?
just tried my above theory, and rom manager is actually smart, it downloads a new copy when you want to flash cwm
I've done something like this (though I forget exactly what) using Android Root Toolkit app.

Yeah, I'm sure it checks hashes before flashing anything, and since they didn't match, it downloaded a new copy.
I thought you could buy the pro version of rom manager and it would then flash the touch versions for you?
When I go into Rom Manager and choose flash CWM it gives me the option to flash the touch version or the normal version. Maybe you need to flash the normal version with Rom Manager first then it'll give you the option for touch?
if you have the .IMG file for w/e recovery you want to install, download Terminal Emulator app from gPlay and fire off the following commands:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/shineynewrecovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 bs=4096
Alter the /sdcard/shineynewrecovery.img to wherever you saved the .IMG of the recovery.
I just created a zip. Testing now to make sure its all good and then I'll post the link

Yes you can do that, all you need is a "terminal emulator" app, there are plenty available just search for them. Depending on the custom ROM some already provide updated gapps so be sure to use the right one and not just the one given in tools like goomanager.
I would recommend the following.
1. Backup your apps + data using Titanium Backup
2. Boot into recovery and create a backup of your system
3. Wipe cache/davlik/data + system
4. be aware of the right "flashing order" FIRST the ROM file, then add more zips and choose gapps
5. enjoy your custom ROM
