Nexus 7 - Rooting & Installing kernel, ROM - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to all,
mostly i'm a newbie here...nothing where to start off . Already use nexus 7 about a week with standard stock ROM, apps and games. Get tired, then I decide to download tools like nexus 7 toolkit by mskip & wugfresh...but i dont know what to choose. Recently updated to new jro03d 4.1.1. What is the best tool to unlock my machine. Thanks!

Wug's Nexus Root. A member from here "reverendkjr" made a "Idiots Guide to Unlocking & Rooting the Google Nexus 7 Tablet". Very easy to follow.

Or, you could learn a little about your device and unlock/root manually. Don't be intimidated by all the steps, its pretty simple if you follow along.

All are good methods, but I would recommend wugfreshes root toolkit. Its really easy to use.

It's better to do it manually. You learn more and you can tell exactly where you messed up if it happens.

I just used Nexus Root Toolkit instead and it worked. I selected the option: "flash stock and unroot". So I am guessing that I went back to stock JB 4.1.1 and the only thing needed is to root using the same tool?
I'm in a similar situation, but I rooted/unlocked manually on a MAC.
Flashed to a ROM but would prefer to flash back to the original one.

Guys. Take 5 minutes and learn some basic fast boot and adb commands. Then this kind of stuff will seem trivial.... Stop acting helpless and learn something here

Your point is right, but the delivery is wrong. All of us were noobs at some point and asked questions that seemed trivial to the more experienced HUMANS in the community.
True, we should all look around the forums and read, but, that's not the way to answer to people looking to incur into the flashng, dev, modding community.
Just saying, no offense meant.

[Q] Im a noob... Help!!

i am going to buy a n7 but i am not sure about the toolkit, is it secure or i can damage the n7?? .
Another question, can anyone give me a to do list with all the steps for change the rom?
Is there any risk in changing the rom?
Sorry my english.
The WUG Nexus Rootkit v1.5.3 has been used by many, many people successfully. Make sure the system update 4.1.1 is installed. This is a good guide to follow to install:
http://www.androidnz.net/2012/07/how-to-root-your-nexus-7.html
The Google Nexus 7 Toolkit v2.0.0 in the Nexus 7 Android Development thread does the same thing and has good instructions, too. I used the WUG Rootkit, but both work.

best method for rooting

Hello everyone, three days ago I bought a N7 and i find it really awsome! despite that I miss the features I have with my rooted galaxy s (backup, ad-remove..). I searched on the forums and found different answers but wanted some opinions. Which is the best/safest way to root the N7? I do not intend to flash an alternative ROM as I always did with my phone since stock one is perfect, but maybe an alternative kernel..do you think it is worth to change kernel?which one would you suggest?
Thank you for your help!
Look for wugfresh in the android dev section... works beautifully
Definately use a ToolKit as they are so simple, cuts out all of the issues you may experience and you are literally rooted before you can blink.
I USED THIS ONE
Gotta say an amazing little toolkit and had absolutely no problems what so ever, and whats more all the drivers etc that are needed, are included in the ToolKit
Hope this helps.
Better use the Nexus 7 toolkit, I found it to be the easiest way to unlock the bootloader and root my Nexus 7. I can't comment on kernel as of now, coz I just purchased the Nexus 7 and want to keep it stock with root.
Another vote for the toolkit. I used it last week to root mine and it couldn't have been easier.
The best and safest why is FASTBOOT

Wtf! No toolkits...
This is a nexus device... the easiest phone to root manually PERIOD.
Using a toolkit only becomes useful after you know what your doing.

Can't update to 4.2 - Status 7 error

Hey guys. I'm not very proficient in roots, clockwork, flashing etc. I rooted my Nexus 7 back in September and its been on 4.1.2 since I can remember. I tried to update to 4.2 by downloading the zip and also by OTA after disabling google services framework. Both failed and I got status 7 error each time. I then downloaded nexus 7 rootkit and did each option I could and ended up with an unrooted stock tablet. tried OTA again. Status 7. I read somewhere that I have the wrong kernel? I dont know what that is and I dont know where to revert to the stock one. the one i have is 3.1.10-g009b6d1 [email protected])
Please help, and please use layman's terms. I have the rootkit in case I need instructions. Thanks a lot.
Rather than use a toolkit, which can be a crutch, just fastboot flash the stock image. It's a simple process, you'll have a better grasp of the process, and you're guaranteed to be 100% stock when you're done.

Funny you should ask. There's a sticky at the top of this subforum with a detailed, step by step guide.

im still struggling with the android.
just wanted to know what is the latest pacman rom for nexus 4? and where can i download it?
cause i could only find packman rom 23 for note II.(maybe i can install this one on my nexus 4?)

This is where PACman rom is. Stick with Android. You will never look back. And if you BADLY want IOS back, MIUI gives a similar experience.

Before doing any modifications to your phone, get to know android, read the wiki's about terminology and how stuff work around here. You'll be doing yourself a big favor, and escaping a potential "Help-i bricked my device" thread. You can't flash roms from other devices.
One more tip, post questions in the Q&A section, you'll get better support and answers there.

Never ever flash anything from another devices forums. You might permanently brick your phone.
