I there any settings or something to adjust proximity sensor? I was trying to turn off screen covering sensor with thumb, but.. no effect.
Does it need any setting or my phone is faulty?
I noticed the same thing on my phone today.
The proximity sensor doesn't work if you've switched off the Automatically adjust backlight option in Settings>Sound & Display>Backlight. There doesn't seem to be any way around this as the proximity sensor doesn't have its own option.
Are you in a call? You need to be calling/receiving a call for it to work.
I agree, I think you need to be in a call for the proximity sensor to work properly.
For me it works fine. And i don´t hade automatic backlight on.

That's interesting because I can toggle my proximity sensor (whilst in a call) by toggling the automatic backlight. That option must be linked to something else as well.
Screen goes black
I do have the same behavior, when I make a call the phone's screen goes black automatically so if I need to press any key have to press send to get my screen back, then use the keypad, nonsense, is anyone having the same issue ?
for me, the proximity sensor doesn't work at all. I have the automatic backlight setting and yet it still doesn't work. any idea why?
SP300
I just found the solution, I have got the screen protector on "The Original HTC SP300" and is causing the screen to go blank when you do a phone call, If a remove it a little bit from the top left corner and make a call works as spec.
I would like to know if there is any fix known for the Ambient Light sensor error. When I make or receive a call and put the phone to my ear it doesnt turn off the display. So when i end the conversation I often seem to have accidentally made a couple of appointments and set a couple of timers with my ear while I was in a conversation. This is very frustrating and I've searched the fora, but nobody seems to have this problem. There are a couple of posts with some proximity sensor errors, but this problem is a ambient light sensor error. Someone has some information or knows a fix for this problem??? I' m on Artemis 15.5 NLD rom and customized the hell out of it (with all working and no corrupt software or tweaks). Not really looking for answers like: perform hard reset and such, but more like new drivers for the light sensor. But then again, any help is appreciated!
EDIT: Installing S2U2 will fix this issue. You can set it manually to even auto unlock by the sensor, great app!
I don't know if it is the proximity sensor or not, but when I go outside my screen just turns off. Whether its in the boot animation or android fully loaded, it just turns off everytime I'm outside. Like the phone is oversensitive to daylight or something. Running cm7 latest nightly and I have tried other nightlies but same issue. Any ideas?

It's not the proximity sensor. Proximity sensor only works when the phone is in call.
You might have meant light sensor, but it can't turn off the screen.
W8 user here.
Recently, I returned to stock after flashing 102938123 different ROMs, some CM, some TW.
I've noticed that my prox sensor is not turning off the screen during calls. yes, i've ensured that the option is checked in the call settings.
*#0*#, prox sensor values max out when the sensor is covered, HOWEVER, no green screen, no vibration.
every prox sensor post i've found mentions that the screen turns off during calls, but not back on. "maybe it's dust", they say. not in this case - sensor values tell a different story.
anyone have any idea what could be the cause of the "no green screen, no vibration" issue? i'm 99.9% positive it's also the cause of the "not turning off during calls" issue too.

Thanks, i have oreo patch january and on my xiaomi, when the screen is off, stops flashing
Yep! It is blinking when the screen is on. (I'm on February Patch.)
I'm on February patch and not facing this behaviour. Maybe you have an app making phone work like this? Hope you solve it.

No, I don't have any application which does this. Check it by a camera ( I think it is infrared) and when the screen is ON.
My proximity sensor test
Same here also

I think it's a bug in new February Patch Stable Update
First of all, I can't reproduce it (used my work iPhone's camera, and yes iPhone sucks but it's for my job, no choice here ).
Second, are you sure it's a bug? Did you do similar check before Feb update?
I'm not a pro of phone hardware, but it seems normal to me that the sensor will be always working. I'm even using an app to wake the phone with the sensor (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jarsilio.android.waveup) so the sensor is working all the time, even with screen off.
It's not a bug, it's the same for a lot of phones, don't worry

thanks bro, I'm not sure it's a bug, however the sensor should only be activated for calls
It's not a bug. The proximity sensor is also used for auto brightness control.
When the proximity sensor is tripped, values from the light sensor is ignored, which means that screen brightness won't change even when the light sensor detects changes in ambient light.
This is useful for e.g. when you play a game or watching a movie in landscape and your hand covers the light sensor. The screen won't go dark, but stays at the same brightness. Without the proximity sensor activated, your screen would go dark every time you accidentally cover the light sensor with your hand.
Try turning off adaptive brightness and see if it's still on. It shouldn't be necessary to have the proximity sensor on all the time if you set the screen to a fixed brightness.
