Best offline navigation app? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've got my 25$ credit burning a hole in my Google wallet, I've long ago spent my money on the paid versions of the apps I want and to the devs I want to support.
Since the time Google maps/navigation became nearly perfect I've always used that, now I have this amazing tablet that would make an amazing GPS! Just I'd like to have offline maps as it would be nice not to always tether it or per pick out my route in advance
I looked into copilot but not sure how good it is, mixed reviews not to mention like 4 different versions of nearly the same app on the market. Any one bothered much with offline GPS? Any recommendations?

Sygic is pretty good, I use it every day

I see its only a free trial in market, how much is the full maps for US? And is the only option to pay directly to sygic.com or can the full version be purchased via the app itself?

USA version cost $29.48 (at today's euro exchange rate) and can only be purchased via their website. This may suggest you may need to pay for each android device you intend to install this software. Maybe someone who already purchased this can chime in.

It seems the license can be bound only to one device at time. Look here:
https://support.sygic.com/sygic/topics/can_i_use_one_license_on_multiple_devices
However, you have up to 5 license transfers for free, look here:
https://support.sygic.com/sygic/topics/two_device_enablement

Sygic is very good. A couple of years ago when I first purchased it was a little lacking but now it's awesome.

Downloadable maps?

I remember at the launch party in London, they mentioned that you could preload maps, which you could then use in case you're in an area where you have no internet access.
They also mentioned that the maps would be free for download.
Does anyone have anymore information on this or how we can download the maps?
I'm sure this is in the user manual...
Open locations, then go menu > upgrade > download maps
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Does the upgrade to Premium also enable the Navigation button in the Car Panel. Mine is greyed out.
Yes, turn by turn nav is chargeable. Anyone seen the news that tomtom maps are coming to the dhd and desire z? Interesting!

I hope you are right Dazultra
The map data is from tomtom who own teleatlas maps. It does not imply the tomtom application is coming to the hd.

Actually the current maps are route66. I didn't say the tomtom app was coming, just that other maps by tomtom are. Was on engadget.

How many maps can we download??
I've read that we are entitle to 3 free maps, is this right?? And that those 3 maps are all taken account your location, 1 is the map from where you are and the other 2 are from two countries near your country. Is this right? if Yes, does it matter where I bought the phone or not?!? If I buy a phone from England I would get a map from England and two other countries near England or do I get a map from Portugal (my location) and two other from countries near Portugal?!=!
Please, someone answer me, cause I really need to decide where I'm going to buy the phone...

I'm in the UK, and the phone came preloaded with UK, Ireland and France maps. I believe you can download any other maps for free, its just the turn-by-turn navigation you pay for.
I'm going back to New Zealand for Xmas and have already downloaded the maps for there.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
How much do we pay for the turn-by-turn navigation?
Is it subscription based? Any time limit like X euro for Y days?
Is the turn-by-turn "intelligent" provided by TomTom or HTC Locations?
Yes it is subscription based and the prices vary a lot. You can do it per month, per year, or for life. Traffic and cameras are separate and again, per month or year.
What do you mean by intelligent?

charging for navigation?
what a step backwards...
i swear htc dont want people to buy this phone.
such a shame because i REALLY wanted to get this phone. it seems so good.

You can still use Google Maps or any other mapping app out there. I'm not sure how it's really a step backwards, at least the options there.
The locations app is very nice, but its missing postcode lookup.
Which is really weird for a paid navigation system.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Is there any price list somewhere? I am interested in the "for life" price for WESTERN EUROPE.
At least: Benelux + Germany + France
What I meant with "intelligent" is the navigation app ... the logic behind the turn-by-turn routing. Is it provided by TomTom or HTC?
I meant, if TomTom "only" provide the maps ... that could mean the navigation app is created by HTC.

Western Europe for life is 50 dollars US.
I don't know who does the intelligence. I think the current maps are provided by route 66, and tomtom will be providing alternatives (for a healthy profit I assume!)

welll i had an HD2 before and was using Garmin XT kinda got spoiled by the british voice if anyone can change that, that will be great
In the voice settings you can set all TTS stuff on the phone to UK English (British Accent).
Or you can pay to get I think its called vox tts something like that it has tons of pretty good voices however they all cost money.

Get Co-Pilot, best money ever spent. The map data gets stored on your SD card 1.1GB for North America. The best part is not it does not use wireless data to get maps. It has all the fancy voice options you want.... 4 in british i believe (I use one myself ;-))
I thought the Desire Z with sense downloads the Google maps to the SD like a pre-fetch. Is there something like that for the G2?
I use waze. I like the idea of community generated real time traffic notification - but I suppose the user experience varies depending on your location. Here (Israel) it's quite popular.

Navigon is a new one on the market thats supposed to be good. I haven't tried it personally although I am considering it. Its on sale for $40 for a limited time as an intro price before it kicks up to $60 or something. Has live traffic and a "reality view" which looks kinda like layar.
Anyone actually tried it yet?

The problem with Google and Waze and some of the other "free" options are that they all require a data connection. Unfortunately, when I need GPS the most is in places where cell phone signals are weak/non-existent... I used TomTom for ever on WM.

Not sure if one of those exists...
I don't have it on my tablet, but I use the gogoCLIENT on my PC to get a IPv6 address from the US. Google defaults to IPv6 so I get the US play store on my PC. I can make purchases there which still automatically go to my tablet.
I actually found out by accident as I used it to buy a couple of the 25 Billion Celebration apps via the PC and was surprised to see the US store. In the UK they're 25p and in the US they're 25c, which is about 15p.
You could use a VPN. I use http://www.freehostedvpn.com/usa-free-vpn personally when I'm searching the US market. Haven't had any problems with it so far.

try market enable ,it should work
I use the same superfreevpn method used to get 25$ outside US

I used it but still says incompatible solution?
Incompatible solution? That's a weird error. Maybe you should try using tor to connect? I don't know if it would make a difference.
You should try to reset cache and data in market setting through setting>application in android. Have you tried it?

Works upto the pay stage on me then reverts to GBP any suggestions?
I mean I tried both methods but still dont work its says not available in my country for both methods is there a solution? i hate it when google does this makes free apps not available makes no sense
I faked a US market with marketenabler... Then I made a free account on droidvpn and ran the service... Cleared the cache on play store app.... Then I got US GOOGLE PLAY STORE with books, magazines and all.
But of course you still won't be able to purchase paid stuff because payment is not active here in Egypt yet. But you can get every free US app
Mail me if you still need help.

I just tried Hideman from play store..seems to work well but you only get 5 hrs a week for free. Hulu installed for me but I didn't try to set up an account, kinda worried that a Canadian email/ credit card might not work

Note in BBC Sport app ad - UK

One for the UK mainly...
Anyone notice the current BBC promo for their BBC Sport app? It's the one with the woman walking down the street looking at the new app with a load of people following behind her trying to read the screen. That's definitely a Note she's holding, obviously so everyone can see the screen. Presumably the Note 2 was just that bit too distinctive to use.
I find this somewhat ironic given the BBC's attitude to Android and that the Sport app was available for iOS several weeks before the Android version came out. Not to mention we're still waiting for local caching for iPlayer...
Anyway, always nice to see one's choice of tech vindicated by a large, faceless organisation

I wouldn't bother - offers nothing the mobile version of the website doesn't already give you.

Install Google Wallet in UK....

HI i have install google wallet yesterday and its working fine.
1. Download the apk file and just install normal.
2. before launching the app go to google wallet settings and change your home address to a random US Address (You don't need to change everything just the city and the Zipcode and select US as the country .
3. launch the app after the setting it works fine.
4. then you can setup tap& pay .
5. go back to google setting and change your original address.
Download Link
http://www.filedropper.com/comgoogleandroidappswalletnfc_1
it works fine .
Thank you very much.
Have you actually successfully paid for anything yet?
would love to see if this is actually possible.
anybody know WHY google wallet isn't officially available (tap and pay form, not online) outside of the US??
There's no point. All of your payments will simply be declined.
are there any tap and pay apps that work in the uk??

The only one I know of is orange/Barclaycard which only works on s3 & s4.
Visa have said they're releasing one this month. But they said that a while ago and new recent news about it.

Not working on my nexus 5. After download it says cannot open file.
I had this installed and running in Canada for a while now. IO used it the other day for the first time at McDonalds and the payment was declined. The error I got was about it not supporting international transactions.
After I flashed a stock rom it appeared on my aussie n5. Noticed it while I was going through my apps on titanium backup and it was frozen. Just unfrozen it and it opens and all but since I'm outside us, it's useless.

Can't we just record d the pay pass information with NFC and forward it like a normal card in store ? Is visa going to make it available in AU too?

It installs fine but payments decline everywhere for me. I've tried Gregg's, Boots, MacDonald's and Starbucks
