Don't be a fool! (like I just was) - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

make sure of the fundamentals, like your damn USB cable is plugged right into your desktop!
i tried flashing CWM onto my tab while plugged into my USB 2.0 Hub and it worked fine, so when flashing to ICS 4.0.0.4 didn't work, kept getting stuck at factory.ims or whatever, I didn't think anything of that - so I just wasted three hours trying to figure things out when finally I was like, let me try plugging my official Samsung cable right into my desktop USB port and try.
voila. it worked.
so learn from me, don't forget the nitty gritty basics!

You may not wanna hear this part, but you might have to do a hard reset...reason I say you might not wanna hear it is that you'd have to reinstall/resync all your stuff, and since you say that your comp. isn't recognizing the phone, backing up and resyncing would be a pain.
Hopefully someone would be able to tell you how to do it without a Hard Reset, but from what I read on the forum, that might be your only shot. Hope that helps, and hope someone can figure out a way to do it better.
Can you change the title of your post, please? My son just read it aloud as he was sitting here on the couch with me while I was checking out the forum.
...........
HAHAHAH, sorry
Changed
Language...
First off. Watch the language. You've been around long enough to know better...
You could install active sync on a friends computer and get your info off first. Then you would be free to hard reset the phone. You'll obviously need to remember your password. It wouldn't be very secure if you could hack around that now would it?
I'm using the desktop, but I can't access anything on the phone because the phone is locked a nd I can't access it. And it asks me to unlock via my phone.
Another problem is it will let me type in a passsword once, and then it will disregard everything else (you click unlock and it wont do anything)
Hmmm I'll install another ROM
Passwords are such a pain... People put them where they're not needed, and then they come back and bite you in the rearend. I was just trying to extract a package from an old kitchen I DLd months ago, but it was password protected..WHYYYYYYYY?
Before you password protect something ask yourself if it really needs it.
It's okay I've reflashed a new rom to it.
thanks anyway
you should not post random non-development questions in the development and hacking forum.....i mean seriously, why is this post here?....post in your phones forum.....
OK Take it easy on the language with your frustration.
Also, Yes this should not be in Dev and Hacking. More than likely belongs in your Phones Sub-forum General Section.
However your thread doesn't explicitly mention what phone you are using. That makes it difficult to help you out as well.
thanks for cleaning up up the language. problem solved thread closed.

[FIX] For those that haven't been able to get to Download Mode

If you are having problems getting to download mode, Use the Stock Captivate Cable Only when trying to access Download mode!
Story:
I have struggled with 2 captivates now to get into download mode. I have read tons of arguments back and forth from people that say it is easy to get into download mode, and people who say that it is impossible with their phones.
Well, for some history...On my first captivate, I bricked it and it refused to go into download mode...PERIOD. I proceeded to exchange it(I was within my 30 days), and didn't think much more about it. Well, I installed Cognition 2.2 recently and in the process realized that my new phone would go into download mode just fine by doing the standard process of:
1)remove battery, sim, microsim
2)reinserting battery only
3)holding down both volume buttons
4)inserting usb cable
No problems right? Well, I ended up "bricking" my phone by accidentally deleting my framework-res.apk file(don't ask) and lo and behold, I suddenly could not get it to go back into download mode. I was really pissed at this point and spent all night trying everything all over again.
Well, I decided to give up for the night and go to bed. As I was laying in bed a thought crossed my mind. I had purchased a second usb cable(from ATT) to use with the captivate, and the one time that download mode had worked, I was using the standard captivate cable that came in the box. However, every time it wasn't working I was using my second USB cable. So I got up out of bed to try the stock cable and, lo and behold, it works flawlessly every time.
I would venture to guess that this is what the problem is with most everyone else that can not get their captivates to go into download mode. So, if you haven't tried it give it a shot. And certainly tell everyone you know to use the stock cable only.
I just want to reiterate that the spare cable that would NOT work was purchased from ATT and is the cable that they recommend you purchase as a spare. It wasn't like I got it from ebay or something.
Using a usb cable I got from ebay, monoprice, htc, motorola, and stock samsung cable, I was able to get into download mode everytime...
... also, shouldn't this be in general and not in development?
No USB Hubs or Extenders
RECOMMENDED: Use your stock USB cable that came with the phone.
IMPORTANT: Plug the USB cable into your computers native motherboard USB port (the back of your computer). Plugging the cable into USB switches, extenders or external ports, does not allow the phone to enter download mode correctly.

I can confirm, although i found this out a whilllllle ago, just didnt think much of it lol
Just so you know. I found that in some cases certain USB cables just will not work with some devices. This has to do with the quality of the cable. I would avoid overly thin or flat cables because they tend to be cheaply made and won't be able to provide a stable power flow. The shorter the cable the better.

I can recreate this over and over again. The reason I put this here and not in general is because I, like many others, have struggled over and over with odin, and people had the attitude of "it works every time, you're just doing something wrong." The reality is that you're trying to prove that I'm just "doing something wrong" because all your cables work. I can recreate this over and over again. What do you want me to do, make a video of it in order for you to believe that there is an actual issue?
I think it's important for people to see this when trying all the roms and mods that are in the development section. In fact, I think it would be REALLY helpful if designgears would add this to the "how to get to download mode" section on the Odin thread. I can't tell you the amount of hours I have spent trying to get into download mode. It is incredibly frustrating to do everything right, and have others telling you that you are not doing it right.
I searched google endlessly looking for a solution to get into download mode, and no where did I see this as a possible solution. Also, as an FYI, when I plug in the other cable, it just goes straight to the battery screen no matter what I press. I can hold down the power and volume buttons to go into recovery mode, but it's impossible to get to download mode.
I have plugged mine into a usb port in the front of my computer as well as in my monitor. I have never had a problem with download mode or anything else.

While this is good to know...It is quite possible you got a faulty second cable, and some of the cables that do come in the box are faulty as well..
It's always a good reminder to try changing out cables if your having an issues. Same for downloading different things that work for a-lot of people and not for you/me..same too for hooking into the back of the computer and bypassing the external hub....Sometimes you get lucky and find the problem right away..sometimes you don't....It's called a process of elimination...
FWIW..I've never trusted cheap ass cables..in anything. Never have..Never will..but..JSYK..expensive cables go bad from time to time too
Thanks for the reminder

I've also noticed that, on my PC at least, my front case USB ports don't always reliably work with this procedure. I've been plugging the USB cable since into the USB ports on the motherboard.

The thing that throws me off is that this cable works for EVERYTHING else. Data transfer, media syncing, recovery mode, charging, etc... There was never anything that would indicate any issue with the cable. I just want to make sure everyone knows this, because when I was struggling to get into download mode, I didn't see anyone suggest that it could be the cable, even though the cable worked for everything else.
OP - thanks for posting this! It is at least another thing to keep in mind when troubleshooting. I was actually considering getting another cable to keep at work.....
P.S. would we get in trouble for quoting Michael Scott's favorite joke in response to post #6? Yea, I know. Little too obvious right. I'll restrain. Already made myself chuckle anyways

Um.. not true - Although I did use the stock USB Cable - I was flashing the night away (trying to recover my bricked phone) on my Win7 box using a USB hub that had a few other devices hooked into it.
Never had an issue getting to D/L mode.. and it found the phone again and again and again and again.... (go on for infinity).
I think it has more to do with the hardware your connecting it to and how the USB drivers loaded (i.e. XP=****e) and what type of OS your running more than anything. I had terrible luck with my work's XP rig... but my Win7 x64 rig found the device while in d/l mode - found the drivers?!?! and I was good to go.
Although - it is always a good rule of thumb IF you can't get the device to recognize on your computer to use the original cable and hook to the best source of power for your USB which is the back of your computer.
So.. this isn't a [FIX] - just a good tip. If you can't get into D/L mode by holding the volume button and jamming in the USB or using ADB -> Reboot Download command.. your pretty much fux0red.
I need original USB cable
I just wanted to throw in my $0.02 I needed to use the original USB cable and a port directly on my motherboard. The usb cable I bought from newegg does not work with my MSI X58 motherboard and my capitavate. The original cable does not work if I use a front usb port on my Antec P183 case. Strangly an identical usb cable from newegg that I ordered at the same time does work with my work computer, Dell X38 motherboard.
Ive had the same problem... only way i get it to download mode is via Terminal:
su
reboot download
I really cant get it to work no other way :s

I appreciate all your hard work on everything. I read through that post and tried to search it several times... Believe me, I spent hours pouring through the pages looking for something that would work.
No where did I see anyone say to make sure you were using the stock cable because other cables might not work? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...there are a lot of pages after all.
Furthermore...I'm sorry to be new to Android and to flashing roms, but we are all new at some point. No one is born an expert.
edit: I'm guessing you misunderstood the post? I wasn't posting about the method...just about the fact that many usb cables, including the micro usb cable that ATT sells, do not work for getting to download mode. If I'm wrong about what you were posting, feel free to correct me. If i'm correct, your post is quite ironic
The first captivate I had WOULD NOT GO INTO DOWNLOAD mode regardless of cable or usb port. I tried every port and every cable including the stock one that came with the phone.
The replacement captivate ALWAYS goes into download mode regardless of cable or port.
It's a tip and thank you for the. But if your phone is one of those that does not have 3 button recovery then it will likely not work with the 2 button download trick either.

[Q] Loading new firmware without micro-USB

After running Android from SD-card since August I am now running mdeejays Gingerbread release after I borrowed a micro-USB cable of a friend.
I recently lost my cable and I'm charging my phone with a charger that has a fixed micro-USB connector.
I was always able to load a new WinMO firmware by putting an LEOIMG.NBH on my SD-card. Is there an equivalent for this with Android?
As said, it's now running Mdeejay's Cyanogenmod so it has MAGLDR11 and hardspl.
All tutorials expect you to have an USB.
Can I do it without a USB, but using my SDcard?
you will need to Clockwork Mod via USB and then you can load them off of your SD card.. you know that micro USB cables are extremely inexpensive? like $2-3 off of ebay... i would recommending buying one.
omfg.... What part of android q&a forum is so hard for people to understand.... If you're posting a question.... use the "Question & Answer" forum.... Mods JUST spent days rearranging threads from idiots unable to understand this concept... This is 4 in one day!

You can now make some sarcy comment about how I should be helping your ass....
Sent from my HD2 NANDroid using XDA App

$1.50 AND free shipping!
LOL... this is cheaper than posting your question on the site.
Nope, you need a Micro-USB cable at one point or another.
Things you need USB Cable for:
Flashing HSPL 2.08
Flashing Radio to one that supports 576MB RAM
Flashing MAGLDR
Flashing NAND ROM
If using Clockwork, you need to make partition in the NAND
Do use the search engine from time to time,
there were posts that say exactly how to flash winmo rom from the sd card and revert all magldr/android/hspl
for example when you need to go to the service provider...

That's right.
As said, I've been quite capable of flashing new roms from the moment I've got the device. Well about any device. Thousands regularly download software I've developed to let them use their linux router for more purposes.
Besides the advice of getting a new cable, which doesn't help me, really. I'm not getting a cable at my home within the next hour for $ 1,50. I even bought a spare one for € 8,- 3 months ago, so I could leave one at work, but all of a sudden it broke down. I went to several stores yesterday, but none of them had this cable.
I spent at least several hours a day to help answer community questions, sometimes even be called a god, but it doesn't much help me here. I don't think it should make any difference really, but I'm just telling you so you may think what have you ever done free of charge for what community?
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=frater+dd+wrt+god
Searching only gave ambiguous results and none came up with an answer I could work with.
I have Cyanogen's Android on NAND of a week old and I would like to flash the current one.
Can it be done without a USB cable?
Well, unless you already are using Clockwork Recovery, otherwise, no, you still need a cable.
Clockwork Recovery allows you to flash new ROMs to your NAND with just SD card, without cable.
There is however a catch, you need the cable if you need to re-partition the NAND, clockwork cannot partition nand.
So if you allocated 150MB for system partition for MDJ's Gingerbread Cyanogen 7, and now want to switch to DesireHD stock which needs 350MB system partition, you need cable.
OOOoooo... DD-WRT eh? I lurk those forums, when Brainslayer didn't go commercial, even emailed and got some replies from him. I still use DD-WRT for home, however use pfsense for serious stuff now.
frater, read this if you are bored... and I mean REALLY bored, and in a good mood, or really drunk, or really high.
Well, I would say, grab a beer, wait for tomorrow morning, then head off to more stores and start hunting that mythical creature called MicroUSB Cable in your area.
If you can't curb your flash addiction, and feeling rich, you can do the following.
Cut the Micro-USB connector from your USB charger, give it around 5 inches or so, or 15cm, that should give you enough length, in case you screw up.
Grab a USB cable, you need the FLAT end, also known as USB A connector, cut the cable, again, giving you around 15cm or more.
There should be 4 wires, maximum 5 wires, and the wires are color coded, so attach green to green, red to red, yellow to yellow, black to black, blue to blue, etc.
4 wires: power, usb data+, usb data-, ground
5 wires: power, usb data+, usb data-, grond 1, ground 2.
Thanks... I think I'll go for option #1 and have a drink.
I've flashed my HD2 several times without even a computer (downloaded the img to my SD-card from the device itself).
Your remark made me think about the song "Ironic". There was a discussion going on about Americans as opposed to British not knowing what "Irony" is. Alanis is Canadian.

I don't want to flash WinMO. I just got rid of it and I never want to use it again (talking about ambiguous answers).
I have Android Gingerbread on NAND with HSPL and MAGLDR 1.11
My Gingerbread is 1 week old and I would like to flash "MDJ's CyanogenMod 7 v. 2.4"
I'm currently running "MDJ's CyanogenMod 7 v1.8"
If one is so busy helping others it isn't always possible to investigate every subject. I've seen the word clockwork on the forum before and I thought it was about restoring settings. I'm not that much interested in that. I have my own Zarafa server and only need to enter my account and all the contacts and agenda gets restored. I can live with the other default settings.

My odin issues finally solved!!!!!!

I found this idea when trying to install heimdall in ubuntu - where nothing worked there either. Someone had one of the usual issues (can't connect to the computer) but then he cleaned the connection! I personally was trying all day on 4 machines and trouble shooting in between before I found this. It just all clicked - like the fact that at the beginning I could see it on the computer, now it sometime recognized as a unknown item but not always etc.
So if you found this you've like found all the usual stuff already: install/reinstall kies or the drivers, try different USB ports etc.
Well add to the list: clean the usb port on the phone with alcohol and the cable and the computer too. I did that and bang, like 8 proper drivers installed!!! probable because I had installed and reinstalled so many many many times. this was literally days of my life and hours of my sleep (including now to share but XDA is worth it).
Now the fellow in question apparently would use it as a boombox in the bathroom while having a shower (not sure how that worked) but in my case it was only 3 months old and never really wet or abused. But it still worked awesome!!!!
I can't believe I can use Odin finally! Good thing too because I have an i9000m with the dreaded SD card of death (which just came back from its 1st repair - hence the need to root it which with 2.2 is much more painful than 2.1 was.
Please thank me if it helped!
Oh and one other note. It would not just see in when going straight from cleaning to download mode. I had to do it regularly with the power on first and then I pulled the battery and went into download mode.
ahhhh I can finally get some bleeding work done - except for looking at custom roms now....
Oh - and I guess I should have backed up the existing firmware but I'll try and get that from someone...

So....totally bricked my tab.....

So, as I cant leave things alone.....come on, who can right?.
Verizon Tab....
Im a Droid X kinda guy, we dont have Kernals (thanks Motorola ) so sometimes this stuff gets confusing, so many options right....
Flashed the VZW Kernal after a few attempts, worked, started messing with Roms, ok cool. Started backing up using CWM, ok cool.
Here is where **** goes wrong....
Started tweaking rom, went to reboot, typical boot loop, no biggie, Odin and Heimdall are my best friends, infact at this point I think my 4 year old has seen me use them enough that she can do it, lol.
decided to nuke and repave, but the usual factory files failed halfway through, wtf?, so I got the Phone---!---PC icon, whoops.....
Did some heavy ready/searching, seems there is not to much out there for detailed info on this.
Found a few posts scattered, one was a system dump, and the person said he flashed everything to repair, so I decided to follow instructions, big giant huge EFF-UP !!
What I know now, after all is said and done......
I flashed the bootloader.
Well, now I know.
So, it happens that VZ tech was nice enough to still send me a replacement, I tell them the truth, they know my DX has the GB leak, wifes Dpro is rooted/rom, etc.
Lesson....
um, dont flash boot loader? ha ha ha.
Oh, I did crack the Tab open, took battery out, looked inside, real ***** getting back cover off, looked real good at cover, possible to airbrush/change colors though...
The tab is not really bricked if you can power it on. There is still a way to "unbrick" it.

You're not the first to do that. Use three wall charger for at least four hours, and try again.
In the stickie section (you can see that part of the forum if you view with a pc) there are some instructions involving some button sequences and the usb cord. But you may have to send tab away to samsung for a clean flash with a JTAG Box.
What is the name of the 3-blade screw driver, and where can I get one? It seems gorilla glass is a farce.
