Can't get Google Now to understand me =/ - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been trying to play with Google Now as much as I can, but I just can't get it to understand me at all. It thinks I'm saying "or" when I say "are" for example. My voice is very, very raspy so I'm thinking that may be the issue.
And I've setup my home/work locations, but shouldn't it tell me when I need to leave to get to say work on time or what? It never does, even after having it for a month now.

I had the same issue where the smart cards wouldn't appear (maps directions/timing, sports scores, etc.) and found out that I need to enable Web history on my account in order for it work. I think many people may have disabled this on their accounts months ago when Google said it would be storing web history.

For my own personal curiosity, where are you from?
Google Now works flawlessly for me.

I have enabled web history, location history, etc. And nothing. It finally started showing a card to a meeting just now that I setup in my calendar and has an option to navigate to it. Guess it just takes time.
And I'm from North Carolina, but like I said my voice is very raspy (I really should get it checked out, but meh).

Hmmm.
It works fine for me. If it comes to it, perhaps you should try a factory reset.

To get it show you when to leave for work, you have to set up a calendar event.

The issues like "or" and "are" are pretty common with my Google now. The cards don't have any issue and if the locations are step up fine then they would work fine. At least for me it works fine

New Free GPS from amazegps

Hi Guys,
Thanks for lots of things on the website, I just got my mogul 2 days back and I am installing lots of app. One thing I really wanted was free GPS app. Now I liked msn live better then Google, specially as it was giving ding sound before turn. But I still wanted audibles. So, I downloaded nav4all. But it was pain in the xxx as it will only work some time. Even I kept google maps running in the back so it can lock but when I start nav4all app it will not lock. It only worked 2 times for 10 minutes.
So finally found following app and it worked like champ. I will give outdoor try tomorrow bit it was easy to install, good clear sound. Lots of setting and 2 different option to save bandwidth. I did not have to do anything to even lock on the satellite. It just worked. I tried some entering address and all that stuff and it worked great. I will let you all know more tomorrow after some test. Give it a shot as it is free.
http://www.amazegps.com
how did you get this to work i get an apply screen. i will look deeper into this im also using the mogul. thanks for exposing this app though
same
ive got the same screen
Did y'all follow instructions and write down the username and password they put up on the download page for Windows Mobile?
Apply Screen
Make sure to write down your user name & password, record it from the site download screen.
Pretty cool
Very cool, and it's free, but mine says it's Alpha version, and it looks like it does not have all the features it claims to have for other mobile devices. Also, for some reason, it does not show areal view (I am in Florida, USA). But I like the idead of hearing voice directions. I'll let you know later when I am on the road.

Hi Guys, I tried it today going to work and it worked really really good. I think UI is better then my Magellan. It shows POI's nearby and text is really clear. Route calculation was really quick. I am pretty much impressed. Now one problem is if you zoom fully and driving on the highway, it sometimes lags on refresh but if you are one level less zoom it works good. Man this is too good to be true but it works and the voice pretty loud. As this is just alpha version I think they should be able to improve it more.
This is too good to be true
I know it's alpha, but I have a few issues:
- US Maps are old - didn't have my area which is over four years old.
- Keep having to enter username/password each time I start - no way I'm going to remember that every time.
- doesn't remember settings (imperial vs. metric, etc.)
Anyone else having these issues?
Installed, ran...unimpressed
I don't really see the point for this app in the U.S. I don't know how LiveSearch and Google maps work in other countries....but this app gave zero new features...in fact, the aforementioned worked better.
In my humble opinion, US buyers, move on.

I don't know why you say that, it is not like you are paying anything for the app. It is free, gives you voice prompt. If you are like me who has unlimited data, you don't worry about updating maps as they will be always updated and it just works.
Also it has an no satellite option which will just give you direction arrows and voice prompt in which it will download map for the whole route so, even if you are going to the place where there is no data service available you will still able to navigate as long as you are on the course and as I said it worked much better then I expected.

No, I have to enter username only once and also I don't have to enter setting again. Seems like you have some write permission issue as it just to storing some values to say, don't need to enter password and other setting. I also have my favorites saved. I use it on HTC Mogul.
Just d\l it an looks good. Demo plotted course well but no audio. Tried WM5 and WM6 and sound is greyed out on the options menu. Anyone getting turn by turn audio?

I am getting turn by turn audio. I did not have to make any changes for that.
I tried this app about a week or so ago and it didn't work on my Mogul -- I just tried it again (downloaded the "now available" WM6 version) and it indeed works... Map coverage in my area is a bit weak, but I'm going to give the app a workout and see how it goes...
The price is right...
I tried this on my Mogul yesterday and it drove me absolutely insane! The maps for my area is seriously outdated and the navigation on the map is painfully annoying. Love the "Turn left at next intersection" voice though. Microsoft's Live Search is still my "free" GPS program of choice.

Thanks for the info. I only tried it in the demo mode and I'll take it on the road tomorrow to check it out. I may be one of the only ones, but I love Nav4All, also free, and doesn't need an active internet connection after the course is plotted so I figure I'll play around with this one over the weekend...
Good stuff considering it's free...but i prefer the tomtom over this any day! but then again in the free category this beats google and live only because it gives you turn by turn directions! In googlemaps u take the wrong turn, the course stays plotted but your blue dot goes awry! GoogleMaps doesn't even warn you that you've gone the wrong way!

Do you have a Radio ROM that has the GPS enabled? If you're Verizon, for example, you're going to need to flash a new ROM. There's plenty of discussion on how to do so here and on PPCGeeks.

Google Voice

Has anybody else noticed that with each new update, texting works less and has more fing bugs than you can shake a stick at? Some days...it really drives me nuts, and I think its sprint's crappy 3G, but the issues are the same when on wifi or 4g, too.
Which version was the best (I think one before the current version); does anyone have that .apk?
Sent from my Carbon Fibered EVO.
Hmmm, no, haven't had any issues to be honest. Don't know if it's location based or what, but just to offer another data point I'm in downtown Chicago and rarely stray out to the 'burbs. Could possibly be different somewhere else.
No issues with Google Voice here whatsoever, except for the occasional (<1%) time when a call doesn't get routed to me, or the (<5%) chance that the person listens to about four extra rings before my cellphone starts ringing.
I have even fewer troubles than drmacinyasha and I'm in a small town in Iowa.
You are so lucky.
My texts get hung up, wont send, freeze the whole app, then the other person gets it 5 times, ect. Doesn't matter 3g, 4g, or wifi. Its all I use for texting because I'd rather type on my computer, but when I actually have to text from my phone...its a different story.

Myn's RLS 5. I've uninstalled the app and other apps several times - happened on other roms too, like Fresh's.
mine lag as well. Same ROM. maybe its time for a switch
Are you using the anonymous voice feedback? (whichever thing it asked about opting in to when you search for the very first time) I noticed when I said "no" on stock Sense it worked poorly, then better on Warm 2.2 RLS5 and CyanogenMod7 when I said "yes."
What you are describing used to happen to me but it doesn't anymore. The latest version actually fixed multiple and send failures. Other than I've seen once or twice of deleting something then it comes back later, is the only thing I've seen that isn't working right. What's funny is that occasionally, like right now, I use the evo and not the evo shift. I notice lag in the old evo that isn't as bad or isn't there at all in the shift. On both phones I'm running stock rooted.
The only thing I've noticed is that one time I didn't get a text from my girlfriend. Phone calls work great. Texting works great. Maybe I'm the lucky one.
I had the same texting problems with the any rom with the stock messaging.

They need to update a lot of their apps. Google Voice needs multiple recipient texting. Google Reader needs a "mark as read" feature implemented. Google Reader needs bookmarks. And the list goes on. Instead... they put out Androidify. Don't get me wrong, I made one. But still, there are more important things they could be doing.

My week with Gingerbread :^(

As we all know Gingerbread has been in the oven... And I was one of those people who could not wait for it to cool off. As soon as I saw the leak early saturday morning, I was already downloading. what could go wrong, right? I odin'd the ef02.tar, started her up and wow, she's beautiful, save the extra ugly 4g symbol in the window sill (notification bar) that looks even worse now than previous desserts.
Keep in mind this is a stock .tar. No root. No cwm. No nothing. Except bloat. Low and behold my beautiful lil girl had a very serious functionality flaw. After my first reboot, no more incoming phone calls :^(...
So I've tried everything, I gained root, installed cwm 3.1.0.1 wiped data, cache, dalvik multiple times. Re odin'd the .tar. Flashed Decad3nce's odexed and deodexed roms. Updated modems. Tried frozen on ec05, took a shot at simply AOSP, odin'd a stock ec05, even went all the way back to eb13, with cwm 2.5 (changing file systems when needed) now I'm back to a bone stock ec05 from the stickies in development... Still no incoming phone calls. I called sprint technical and they were unable to resolve the issue.
Funny thing is I can make calls, I have data (3&4g), I can text, just won't receive.
Has anybody else seen anything remotely close to this. If so please comment, if not, comment anyways. I wanna get some opinions on my situation.
P.S. feel free to laugh at my short comings, lord knows just thinking about it brings chuckles to my mind...

You know, i did install google voice. But ive installed it multiple times until now, so i figured it was unrelated. But this past time it did take my texts through there, which had never happened before. thats why i uninstalled it. Im gonna check that out and see if it fixes it. Good luck with your issues.
Sounds like you clicked yes to Sprint integration (ports your number temporarily to google). So they go to your google voice account, however you can check an option to have them sent also to your phone as well (although if you do this with google voice installed you will probably get 2 notifications per 1 sms). Also call screening is an option that is enabled by default, option in google voice (desktop web interface). I had to turn that off too (the press 1 thing). Hope this helps, its just options. Also you could go online and disable the integration and go back to normal.
EDIT: Also make sure your phone is listed to receive calls in the web interface (via a desktop). I know it should do this by default but maybe it didn't for god knows what reason?

[Q] TEXTING on TF? i MUST be doin' something wrong

(wouldn't be the FIRST time
k, just wanna say i searched the word "texts" and dint get one hit in this thread. Thinkin' THAT can't be right but here goes...
Is there a way to send texts on this or becuz its wi-fi only, OR is that an "eyeroll question"?
Other than that shortcoming, i have to say my 1st 24 hours with this thing has been nothing but great.
I was one of those "whatintheworlddoineedatabletfor" ppl and i have to say i am madly inlove with this thing. i already had bought an ASUS MT91 Touch Tablet last fall (even tho it came with Windows 7 Home Premium, not Starter) but after just a few weeks it was just too slow to use at a desk and too heavy to use as a couch potato prop.
This thing picks up where my EVO leaves off and i'm lovin' it to pieces...
But again, what about sending texts? Is this capable of that? (and don't laugh, i KNOW i must be missin' something?

Ms D
Not from your own number unless you have an android phone too.
Text using Google Voice. Eventually people will recognize your GV number as well as your normal number (or if they're clever, they'll just add it to your entry in their contacts list).
I currently use "TextPlus" from the market, it works great and it's free.
No lag in message sending or receiving that I've noticed.

.... I went ahead and bought & installed SyncMMS for 3 bucks which seems like it'd do the trick EXCEPT for the fact it keeps force-closing everytime i try to Register for a dropbox so it can "do its thing"... I sent a msg to the developer... But thanks y'all, appreciate all the replies : )
In the meantime. here's another dumm q... I know the Market Aps for Honeycomb are very limited right now, but again i MUST be doing something wrong, as i have seen so many posts here and there that say they downloaded thus and such on their Asus TF from Market and when i go there, i never find ANY. Just a handful. I read ALL apps should download but not "look right" or have a big black box around them, i'm not finding ANY apps i recognize....
Is there a way to bypass the Market and d/l straight from Internet, even if they won't look right, i wouldn't mind- i registered with App Brain but i'm not seeing it IF there is a way... : )
thanx again
If you're phone is also an Android device, try TexTab: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133277.
Otherwise, Google Voice is your friend.
I also tried SyncSMS, and I didn't like it at all. It uses Dropbox as an intermediate storage facility and sends messages between devices via WiFi. The problem with that is that you have to set polling intervals. Put them too close (5 min) and your battery life suffers. Put them too far (30 min) and the app is useless since you lose the immediacy of SMS.
TextPlus works pretty well too

I don't think you need to be rooted. Unzip the file and install the apk on both devices. You might have to check the unknown sources box in settings/applications/unknown sources. This will allow you to install the apk through file manager by clicking on it.
I'm gonna download it now and check it out.
Been testing TextTab, known bug that after tge TF sleep I loose connection to the phone. I think once wifi is implemented it will be a great app.
One good things about SyncSms, if say you're going over sea, you can leave phone on at home and bring the

Think i prolly won't be using the SyncSMS after the issue u described, and as for it being good overseas, thats not a plus for ME, since the liklihood of me going overseas is pretty nil. Work, home, Jack In The Box is about as broad a travelling that i do...lol

If that could be fixed, then it would seem to be a great app

[Q] Difference between S-voice and Google Now

Sorry if this is the wrong place but:
What's the difference between the S-Voice from the S4 and Google Now?
I watched sum comparison videos on youtube, but they seem a little bit inaccurate. For example, it said that "google voice" can't open apps, but it can on my Nexus 4.
S voice is Samsung's own personal assistant developed for Galaxy devices . I guess it has been used in GS3, Note 2 and GS4 as well.
Google Now is vast new concept started by Google. It's more than just a personal assistant. It's like improved version of Google Voice..
for ex. if you are entering any highway, GN will warn about traffic
you are entering into a tube station, GN will alert you about the next trains lined up..
Google voice can certainly open apps.
Google now is better .S voice sucks that's the difference. Half the time s voice doesn't function right or gets s##t wrong that you ask for.

S-Voice is like another apps on Samsung Device that begins with "S", and i prefer to put S as Silly except Samsung
Silly apps that u can find all of them for free in play store but samsung preinstall them on galaxies device!!! on Android OS that it has its own preinstalled apps......................!
of course Google Now is better.
Ok, this is turning into a fanboys sort of thread.
Back to the OPs question:
Essentially, theyre the same thing. Its like iOS' Siri versus Google Now, theyre both designed to do the same things but by different companies
And S-Voice is part of a proprietary framework called Touchwiz, so it can only be installed on devices running a Touchwiz ROM. Google now on the other hand, relies on no underlying framework and so could be installed on any Android device, as long as the Android version supports it
thx for the reply. The reason i ask this question is i installed S Voice on my Nexus 4 from here: http://www.sammobile.com/2013/03/26/samsung-galaxy-s-4s-s-voice-apk-now-available-to-download/
Is there any reason to have both? I just downloaded it for fun.
With further testing, it seems like the Google now can't open sum apps. Such as PPSSPP, CloudOn, Office Suite, and GTA Vice City. While S voice.apk from the S4 can do this and can do stuff like "turn off wifi" and "turn on bluetooth".

Not really, just use whichever is best for what you do, no point in really having 2 of the same sort of utility app
And obviously one will have more features than the other, it just depends on which features are most important to the user
Question, did the s-voice install properly and isnt giving you any force close issues? Strange because I was sure it would rely on the Touchwiz framework

Evo shift, I'm on AOSP 4.2.2 though, so it should be fine. Strangely, that's where I downloaded it from and no luck.

I used it for a day then got the network connection error also. Samsung (actually Vlingo/Nuance) reads the incoming device ID and blocks the connection if it's a mismatch with the device ID the app's intended to work with. Same thing happened when people were using bootleg copies of the SGS3's S Voice APK before it was released.
As for S Voice vs. Google Now I use S Voice more. To send a text message for example, Google Now opens up the recipient from the address book but you can't dictate the message, at least not from within Google Now. Same thing with e-mail. Dialing's also kind of clunky where if there are multiple options for your request you have to pick one manually. S Voice also repeats the number back before dialing where Google Now just dials and can miss digits you dictate pretty easily. Using a BT headset you can pretty much completely accomplish things hands free with S Voice while quite a few require a second manual action with Google Now.
Here are some examples
If you're in an app like the browser you also can't get Google Now to launch from the menu key because it's now serving the open application and doesn't recognize the "long press" command to open Google Now. Some people have disabled S Voice and remapped the home key to either Google Search or Voice Dialer. S Voice allows you to post to FB and Twitter too. Also, a lot of Google Now's neatest features (flight departure, package shipping, etc.) require you to use Gmail because Google's servers scrape your messages looking for pertinent data. I don't use Gmail and don't like the idea of Google's servers searching my data, even with my permission so to anyone not exclusively on Gmail certain feature don't mean very much.
Voice controls are also tied to S Voice. I use them pretty frequently; especially with the camera, music player, and to launch apps from the lock screen by voice.
I played with Google Now for a short time when I got my N2 so if it's improved or I'm being too hard on it someone speak up.

It's being blocked because the device ID from the APK you downloaded doesn't match the device ID the server's reading from the actual device.
I love Samsung devices but I can't stand S voice. Unless there has been MAJOR improvement over the S3's/Note2 S voice I will still dislike it. First thing I do when I set up my Galaxy phones is disable it and get rid of the home button delay.
I think google now is better, faster, much more accurate and much more unique ( S voice is a clear copy of Siri).
