Hi
Just got the N7 and am looking to root. I see on the dev forum there are quite a few root methods available.
I guess my question is which is the easiest? I'm just looking for root, not worried about CWM or anything like that (just want to root so I can run programs like Titanium Backup).
Thanks in advance.

I used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
Well I tried. It would not root, it would just say "waiting for adb to be enabled." This was after I unlocked bootloader, and installed cwm.
So I had to download a flashable zip for superuser, booted into cwm and flashed superuser, then I had root.
But apparently, the tool works for root for most other people, so I would think it will most likely work.
Thanks for that.

I know it's a bit early, but does one exist yet?
Just flashed from rooted/stock 4.1.2 to 4.2 and have seemed to lost root access. I don't really NEED it, but would like to install my Titanium backups asap. It's also worth noting that the flash took me from TWRP back to stock recovery (andy with red exclamation mark?)
Thanks in advance!
Flash TWRP, then flash SuperSU

It's a Nexus device. You root it the same way you did last time.
It would be noteworthy if it didn't flash you back to stock recovery. That it did is expected.

Next time use OTA Rootkeeper before you update to backup and to restore the root after update
others are reporting wugfresh's kit is still working in the thread in general

What didn't, Rootkeeper or Wugfresh? I can't confirm the toolkit since I don't use it myself just going off of what is being said over in General.
If you are talking about Rootkeeper you have to go into the program BEFORE updating and backup the root first, then after the update you go back in and restore it.. if it didn't work, it was user error, not once has it failed to restore for me on several devices, and others have confirmed it still working in the general thread.

just install a custom recovery - cwm or twrp following the instructions in the android development part of forums and then install the supersu/superuser zip from there
I managed to have root access on 4.2 by using Nexus Root Toolkit. Set the device type to "Nakasi: Android *.*.* Any Build"
I would like to root my Nexus 7, but I just want "Root" so I can push apps via ADB, and run apps that require root.
I don't want a "Custom Recovery" or to install any "ROMS"
I like it stock, and only need root.
Is this possible, and how?

If you "want" to root your nexus 7 "but" don't want to install a ROM then you should do a "search" on this website. There are several "stickies" that explain this; try "reading" them.

I have read through them, but the ones I find all mention installing CWM.
I don't want a Customer Recover installed. Just STOCK
I tried Nexus 7 Toolkit;
Unlocked the Bootloader.
Ran Option 4 to Root.
But Superuser won't work, and Root Explorer says I don't have root.
Looking for the root on my g nexus
I am also looking for the same thing for my galaxy nexus i.e. root without custom recovery
Please do tell me if you get any info as to whether it is possible to root without vision recovery or not

I root my N7 using SuperBoot (it's somewhere in the development section, don't have a link at the moment).
It's ran one time only from bootloader mode via "fastboot boot superboot.img", doesn't flash anything, just get temp-loaded to memory and roots the system on it's boot.
After a reboot you're back on stock kernel.
Quick conundrum...
Rooted my 32bg Nexus7 a couple of days ago using the Nexus 7 toolkit.
I have an unlocked bootloader and CWM recovery installed . i did the all in option in the toolkit..
Just installed Titaanium backup, and it says i'm not rooted??
Root check says i am rooted !
Busybox says i'm not rooted
Superuser fails on updating binary (root acess)
So the 64K question..
Am i rooted or not?
if not ,how do i root properly?
Mart
Srsly? Please go back and root it manually. It will work.

flash this in your recovery http://download.chainfire.eu/282/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.98.zip
your problem is that you used the rootkit on a nexus device. theres no need for that.

fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash either the su binaries or a custom rom in your new recovery, reboot. that is all.
all you need to do is have the drivers and fastboot installed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1741395
If you go to terminal emulator and type in su, does the $ change to a #?
Sent from my Nexus 7
If you have access to directories like /system and /dev, you're rooted. If not, you're not. Skipsoft's Nexus 7 Toolkit works well. Just redo the root steps, watch for error messages, and use Super SU (not SuperUser), and you'll be fine.
This happened to me too so I re rooted it manually. I just followed this link:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ne...1477-guide-nexus-7-factory-image-restore.html
Wow this is getting confusing... ive got two or more guides open both with varying methods and files to install..
if i download the new SU files and reroot, then it wipes all files ? so how does having the SU work
As to reflashing a new binary, thats what i dont want, i just want a stock set up thas rooted.
Also re terminal? it that putty ? and go into the device that way?
Mart
all the binary will do is give you root/su, that is what you want. no more, no less. youll need the supersu app too, to grant su.

the binaries i posted in post #3 http://download.chainfire.eu/282/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.98.zip
flash it in your custom recovery and reboot. you do have cwm recovery installed as i understand, right? that su binary is the most recent. you dont want su(superuser) you want the supersu app.

they dont go onto your pc. normally they would go into the titanium backup folder, but you have an option of storing them in the cloud(i use the google drive option, then just restore from there too).

topic.
N4 is my 2nd Android phone (my 1st is an old HTC Magic) and have never rooted a device before.
I'd like to install PA. So do I need to root it first?
Also I have already installed some apps, I'd like to do backup before factory reset. What is the easiest way for this?
Thank you

Firstly Install carbon backup app (like titanium backup) from the play store to backup your app and app data. It is good because you don't need to root your device in order to backup.
However in order to root, you need to unlock the bootloader which will delete everything from your phone. After that it is easy to root your phone using the guides in the forum. I suggest you don't use toolkit if you want to learn how everything works.
Only after rooting, you can install PA.

You don't need to root. Open boot loader, install custom recovery preferably twrp and you can install the zip files you need. Roms come rooted by default you don't need to worry about that.
i think root will make it easy to install app

Thanks moles. I didn't know that you didn't need to be rooted to your roms. I guess you learn something new everyday. Btw I love your PA roms. This is my first android device and PA is the only ROM I've ever flash. Keep the good work.

Hello, after updating to 4.3 JB on my Nexus 4, the phone had been unrooted.
I have a few questions, I'm new to rooting, so please bear with my (possibly simple) questions.
1. Why did it unroot when it updated? (I was told it would not unroot).
2. If I use helium to backup my phone, will all settings be the same exact as they are at the time I make a backup? Are there any non-root backup programs that work as well or better?
3. I rooted using the "Nexus Root Toolkit" by: WugFresh. The BootLoader is unlocked. Do I just need to root it, or do I have to go through the bootloader process again?
Thanks very much for ready this. Hopefully someone can help me out.

1) The process your went through in order to gain root access was overwritten by the update. Normally, you can use apps like root saver or whatever to keep root through updates, but too many things were updated on 4.3 so there was no way to save root.
2) There are no backup apps that don't require root that will work as well as apps that require it. However, backups made through CWM or other custom recoveries don't technically require root and create exact images of your phone at the time of backup.
3) You don't have to unlock the bootloader again, just flash the SU binary through a custom recovery. I'm not familiar with the toolkit so I can't give you any specific information.
Good luck
