I know absolutely nothing about rooting, radio's and flashing ROM's... But I feel compelled to root my phone an run a custom ROM. I'm a bit (a lot) afraid to screw up my phone like I've read a few places that people didn't have signal cuz of the radio they installed!
I know that there's no Telus official ROM and whatever RUU is, available so what can I do to unroot and go back to what I use now as rom and everything else???
Anyways, what's the worst that can happen once rooted???
HTC HERO
Firmware 1.5
baseband version 63.18.55.06
Kernel 2.6.27

Ok I downgrade my phone, now on RUU 2.73.405.5 but I can't connect to the internet using my network??? what do to?
The worst that can happen is that you get a very expensive brick...

You've probably lost your APN settings. Two things you can do here.
1) Search for the APN settings for your carrier, or post your carrier in the forums and someone will post them for you. (Although, I'm assuming you're on Telus... give me a few minutes and I'll find a thread with the Telus APN settings.)
or 2) Now, install a custom Recovery Image (Amon's Recovery 1.6.2 can be found in the Hero Android Development forum), then flash a custom ROM which includes a large APN list. Although, AFAIK, Telus isn't included in any of the custom ROMs... so you're back at step 1.
EDIT: Here are the Telus APN settings: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4897152&postcount=14
You can edit them from Home -> Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names
(At least that's how you do it in an Eclair ROM... I forget the exact menu items for a Cupcake ROM.)

You know what, after all the custom ROMs i installed, i never had the APN re-configured, however, with the last 2 i installed (BeHero and Villain5.2) after the initial setup, i power cycled the phone (pulled out battery for 2mins) and the APN got pushed back to the phone.
Anyways, its always handy to have that APN written down but im starting to think after the phone gets registered, upon a reboot it gets pushed to the phone!

And about if you ever want to unroot, just install an official RUU. Telus will release an official one when they release 2.1
I wouldnt do it, because we don't know how hard/complicated its going to be to root a device using 2.1 yet. Once the official rom is released, its gonna be a question of hours before a Dev will release a new build with the ''official'' base software to make it a fully functioning rom
Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciated... It's all done now, I rooted my hero without any problem. I've also completed a Nan Droid backup and saved it to my computer cuz I know I'll screw something up soon! LOL Now I'm just all confused cuz I'm a retard when it comes to flashing custom ROM's ( meaning I have no clue which one to flash) any advices?
It just need to be stable, better then Telus 1.5 and not to complicated.
Cheers

Get VillainRom 5.2. It's running 2.1 with Sense. So far it's the best 2.1 rom out there. It will get laggy at some times, bear with it, they all do. Because the current 2.1 rom don't have the correct kernel and that will come with the official release.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654030
And once the official release is out, wait a few hours for them to release a better version
I've PM you there KriEv. just need a few pointers again... lol
SD Card
Hey guys one more question. I"ve loaded Vilain ROM 5.2 and I love it.. My question is can I put another SD card in my phone or I have to keep the one I created a gold card with? Or can I create another GoldCard and put that one in, I used the 2gb one that Telus gave me with the phone but I want to use a 8gb...

You can exchange it
What's the worst that can happen?
Well a couple of days ago this guy in Iceland was trying to root his Hero when it started smoking. Now there's an enormous cloud over much of Europe which is stopping 1000's of flights. Be very careful.
hmmmmmm bricks
?
I exchanged my card but had trouble mounting it on my computer, it appears to work for now! Since I'm new to this any files I should keep on my SD card in case something wrong happens? I've kept my NanDroid backup but nothing else.
What would be the steps to take if I wanted to go back to the ROM I had before loading VillainROM 5.2

Hi, appolgies for being completly stupid, If someone can help me i will be very grateful!
I have an orange network locked hero. After getting tired of waiting I attempted to debrand by installing the generic HTC rom ...
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver
With the idea of installing and letting the OTA update occur...
So i installed goldcard tool created and image. and then installed the htc image.
2.1 is now installed but have the network locked message.
I considered trying to unlock via one of the vendors on ebay, but decided it probably wouldnt work so decided to roll back to the orange rom.
By mistake I ran this update which i believe is the HTC 2.1 update
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_3.32.405.1_R_Radio_63.18.55.06P_6.35.15.11_release_signed
Now when i try an run the orange uk 2.73.61.66 release I am getting an error message 140 bootloader version error.
The phone isnt rooted, is there any way I can roll back or unlock 2.1. Am i going to have to call orange an confess?
Please help!!!!
Leigh
There is a STICKY at the top of the G2 Hero Development section called Villain Roots 2.1 RUU,.. tried that?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
By doing this would it allow me to reflash the original orange image?
Sorry for being dim, finding all this a bit confusing!
root it via that guide, put in a radio that works with orange sim cards, and you should be good to go
Use this guide: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096
Once done you can reflash the original official orange release.
Apologies for being thick...
So I have gsm root running, phone in recovery. What do i do next?
Do i have to flash the rom on using nandroid - never used this before.
try this method - its easier
tinyurl DOT com/3242ljv
you'l need to remake the link as newbies cant post links
Tried the simplified version.
When I try and run the zip file it says it cannot open the file and says it is bad.
Tried a couple of times and with both orange updates..
Arghhh!
Try using a different SD card - hboot couldn't find HEROIMG.zip on one card, tried another and hey presto!
Well in the process of trying to get the orange 1.5 build back on i have got 2.1 working!
Tried flashing an older radio on there and gues what it works. I've now got the standard htc 2.1 build on an orange uk contract, network locked handset.
Quite pleased with myself!

Hi,
Please could you give us the radio version you installed, and how you did it. You'll find the version under Settings > About Phone > Software information > Baseband version.
Many thanks,
The radio version i'm using is
update-hero-radio-63.18.55.06_6.35.05.15-signed
I tried the one before that also which worked.(Basically I started from the oldest one and worked my way up)
I tried the two most recent ones first and these didn't work (Network Locked)
Hope that helps
I've noticed Orange have started rolling out the preupdate, think i might as well stick with the htc build.

Here new ROM for Mozart
http://www.filefactory.com/file/b48..._1.28.111.03_5.52.09.16_22.33a.50_RELEASE.exe
DO NOT TRY TO FLASH THIS ROM FOR ANY OTHER DEVICE EXCEPT MOZART!
Enjoy!
THNX a LOT!
Hopefully it fixes my problems with sending text messages.
Will I lose my data (mainly my SMSes) if I install this update?
//EDIT -> according to several forums, I will lose my data...
and I haven't found any solution to backup my SMSes - yeah -.-
Is there anything I should regard or be aware of before updating?
//EDIT -> I just tried updating my phone and don't know how. It boots in the bootloader (RGB-test with some data on the device, SPL, the SD card, ...) just fine but the RUU doesn't find it.
I'm trying to flash it from a Windows XP machine - is there anything I have to take care of before I can flash it?
Or is there a real step-by-step manual for total dummies (I've flashed my HTC Diamond several times before without problems and have got no clue, why the PC won't find my Mozart).
The update process cancels with a CONNECTION ERROR [260].
will the hspa work on it from the tmobile usa after flashing this rom???

Well, I'm not exactly sure.
However, if you think about the update failing with a wrong VENDOR ID - I guess it makes a difference.

are there any big noticable changes after flashing the new rom?
or is it just a minor security/stability update?
Be careful when uninstalling TMO apps
ROM is working very good, more fluent than stock version 1.25 - no problems found yet.
Still noticed the same problems with the stock ROM after uninstalling TMO shipped apps. When I uninstall Navigon the BING Map "Search" and "get directions" is gone/does not work anymore. When I remove "mediencenter" and plug in the headphones the phone is neither accepting nor able of making calls. However reflashing solves the problem - but you can't get rid of those TMO apps without losing functionality.

According to some other sites (just google the version number), this rom ships out with new devices. So no, it should not get you blocked, as it's a legit update.
Flashing is fairly easy: Backup everything you can, start you Mozart in Bootloader mode (pressing volume down while powering it on), plug it into your PC via USB, install the drivers if needed (done by installing Active Sync in XP, Windows Vista and newer should automatically find the needed drivers), start the updater and follow the instructions.
There is no official changelog, but several people think that the animations are smoother, the touchscreen reacts faster, ...
Seeing that there is no official changelog and the only thing we can do is assume what could have changed, I think there's no sense in discussing this. Especially since you can find several threads in other forums that discuss the changes in various lengths...
I haven't noticed any new problems after the update, so I guess it's at least as good as the previous version.
But this are just my thoughts

No you can't flash the HTC_Europe version, only the TMO_DE version.
TMO_DE stands for T-mobile Germany
HTC_Europe is the generic software for the non branded devices.
Doesn't make any difference except the useless apps you get from t-mobile.
But after you delete them everything is the same.
And for the record, You don't have to flash your phone at first... Installing new firmware IS flashing. so you just run the RUU and make sure zune is running and phone is running, not in stand-by.
And be sure to backup everything you want to keep, haven't flashed my mozart, but i think you lose all data when you flash it.
Sure someone else knows that.

Thanks for the answer!
I thought that I have to set the mozart in the bootloader mode, in order to flash. When I was telling it "flashing" I meant something like hspl like we had to do on the HD2, befor we could flash custom roms or htc roms on it.
edit: and is there any possibility to go back to: 1.25.2250.5 firmware (now installed on my phone)?
and last question this 1.28 version will not breake my warranty, right? It'S a normal t-mobile rom, isn't it?
Guys, I'm not sure I fully understand everything so far.
I basically have a Telstra (Australian) HTC 7 Mozart. From what I gather, I cannot flash this on my device until it is unbranded, is that correct?
hello to everyone.
I have a htc t-mobile mozart Germany but I live in Venezuela and I can assure you and proven DepNet.com for both 1.25 and 1.28
posted on this page to a friend Football and run to perfection
and also I can tell you that my phone came with 1.25 and the 1.28 istale him but then return to 1.25 and all is well.
and the echo for several times trying to place the Spanish language and if anyone can help I'd appreciate it forever
@ WinUser009:
HSPL was needed because we used to flash cooked (and therefore custom-made) ROMs, which were not signed by HTC or any other company able to sign them. These ROMs are unmodified and signed, which is why you can flash them without flashing any unlocked HSPL first.
Bootloader-mode is just a different mode to boot in - it does not need any changes to your phone!
I don't think that there is a possibility to go back to 1.25.xxx - but honestly why would you want to? But I have to admit that I have not yet tried it...
As to the warranty: that's a complicated matter...
This firmware is not official and my new Mozart (I got a new one after sending it in) still had the 1.25 firmware installed (someone posted that newer phones should ship with the 1.28). So there might be a person detecting that you flashed it yourself, if they keep sending out new phones with 1.25 preinstalled.
However, the phone I turned in had 1.28 flashed and I have not received any complaints when I sent it in for a replacement. So I guess it is up to your shop but it should not pose any problems!
@ameel
You can flash as soon as one of these things happen:
- custom roms are released that don't check for the carrier information
- you unlock your phone (somehow)
- Telstra releases an update
But as of now you can't flash these T-Mobile roms on your Mozart.
@minino405
Sorry, but I didn't understand your post. What did you try to tell / ask us?
I hope I could help you with some of your questions
Hey guys, please take no notice of my username, I am NOT a guru! Flashed WP7 to my UK HD2 yesterday. The ROM is incredibly stable and works perfectly in every way except that the phone function is crippled and the OS will not make or receive calls or text messages. I flashed the radio supplied with the package like everyone else, followed the instructions carefully (flashed my WM 6.5 many many times) and have searched the forums before posting. I even tried flashing other compatible Radios. Not quite sure where to go from here as I'm not a dev. Seems like MrMagicMushroom has been having the same kind of problem:
No replies. Can anyone guide me through the safe way to roll back to WM6.5? WP7 works great, wifi included but I think all that flashing disabled the phone function, can't make calls or texts.
I've been through flashing back to a stock ROM and starting over but the phone function is not working at all now. I have a 16GB SanDisk mircoSD card which read perfectly in WP7 even though it showed slightly less memory capacity than WM 6.5 did when I flashed it. Bottom line, I need help!! I read somewhere on the forum my microsd needs reformatting completely. Was this ROM safe for European (specifically UK) HD2 owners? Any ideas/help would be welcome!
N.B: All other OS functions (aside from the aformentioned phone function issue and the expected activation issues) work fine.
Love the work you guys do here btw. Hobbyists like myself really appreciate it.
It seems I have the same problem. My phone has been disabled as I am unable to make calls but everything else works fine. WP7 and back to 6.5 and back again, no phone. It would beep 3 times and hang up when I tried to make a call. Anyone experience this?

I'd try to re-flash the radio with a known working one and then re-installing wm6.5
The version of radio you currently have installed would help as well.
Thanks for the reply rbrookstx, I am running the latest energy rom with a 2.15.50.14 radio. I usually install the radio after the OS but I have nothing to lose so I will give your suggestion a try, thanks again.

I've tried that. I'm still running WP7 on my HD2 but I'm just using it for the novelty as a music player and testing out other functions since I have another phone to use in the meantime. The radio on it at the moment is the one included in the LEO70 WP7 package (Leo 2.15.50.14). I've even tried a T-Mobile specific radio I found (T-Mobile LEORadio_2_10_50_08_2) but I wasn't 100% sure it was compatible for UK or USA T-Mobile users. Either way this is strange since all my flashes have been smooth even though I've had this radio issue before before I sorted it out. I'll try your recommendation.
Rooted T-Mobile G2 with S-off.
Preparing to upgrade my ROM from Stock OTA 2.15.531.3 to stock OTA 2.16.531.5 from the T-Mobile G2 Stock OTA Thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1314541
Should I also be updating my Radio from the HTC Vision Radio's Thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809?
- If yes, what sequence should I follow? Update Radio and then ROM or vice-versa? How-to links, Dummy procedure manuals, etc. would be welcome.
Thanks.
Just popping in, someone will help you out more in depth, but it does not matter which order you do it in BUT....you may want to try the ROM on your old radio to start.
Flashing radios can be dangerous, and their performances vary depending on your location. If after flashing your new rom you have poor signal or battery life, then flash a radio using the instructions in the radio thread. But if everything is peachy keen, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Sent from my T-mobile G2 using Tapatalk
I have recently flashed this same rom you want to, but came from mexdroid. The way I see it with flashing radios is if it's from T-Mo (and if you're on t-mo) then the update would include the radio anyway if the new radio came with the new update.
I flashed the radio first, but in my experience it doesn't matter. The newest official T-Mo radio is "Vision_Radio_12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19" and download the zip file. To install, rename it to PC10IMG.zip and put on root of SD card. Then hold the down volume button while turning on the phone and follow the prompt from there. This is the safest way to update the radio.
So far, in this build with this radio the time the radio is in use is far less than usual and battery life rocks.
I 'm running the pre-rooted OTA 2.15.531.3 ROM but left my radio at the 26.03.02.26_M as the phone came (with the original Froyo ROM). It works, but ever since the upgrade, my conversation partners experience the annoying echo on their end (they hear their own voice delayed).
Similar issues were reported by others but so far, nothing I tried fixed the issue.
I now think this is due to the older radio not matching some settings in the new ROM. I never had this with the Froyo ROM.
Also, when I'm using WiFi calling, the echo is not there which further points to the radio as the culprit.
The interesting thing is that whenever I'm in a noisy environment (like when in a restaurant, mall etc.), the problem is not present but in quiet environments it's always there.
So I'm also thinking about flashing the radio and hope that the problem gets fixed... I'm just nervous to do it and eventually mess up the phone. After all, other than this, everything works perfectly...
I'm not even sure which radio should I pick from that other post. Should I just go with the latest T_MOBILE OTA 2.16.531.5 radio even though my ROM version is lower? I don't necessarily want to upgrade the ROM and deal with customizing the phone again (yes, I know Titanium Backup helps, but there is still work left after that).
If upgrading from stock rooted to the new ota rooted rom its ok and best to undate the radio to since they Booth were part of the update and work well together and so u can take more advantage of the better power management .. and yes battery did improve with new ota and radio

That is exactly the way I look at it as well. I've only updated my radio once, and it was to the latest T-Mo radio. I took it one step further, and also RIL matched as detailed in another thread here on the XDA forums.
Thanks all for your help and advise. I finally found some time to do the updates last night. ROM is now at 2.16.531.5 and radio at Vision_Radio_12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19. All is working well and hopefully the annoying echo will also have disappeared.
I honestly think that flashing a new radio is not necessary unless you really have nothing else to do. maybe change do dz hboot u will require a dif radio (that diff story) but yeh. no really obvious point for u to flash. unless ur signal is really, really, bad?

Sorry for the delay in replying back. I was busy with work and updating my son's G2.
I also matched the lib-ril files, and wiped the cache, dalvick cache and the efs partitions. The echo problem seems to have been fixed for now.
I compared the Android version, Baseband version, Kernel version and Build number on both my son's and my G2's against my wife's G2 (which is stock, unrooted and receives direct OTA updates from T-Mobile). All the version numbers match up perfectly.
Thanks to all for their help.

I honestly think that flashing a new radio is not necessary unless you really have nothing else to do. maybe change do dz hboot u will require a dif radio (that diff story) but yeh. no really obvious point for u to flash. unless ur signal is really, really, bad?

Actually after finally rooting and getting CM7 running, I was running into a problem when I would go in or out of an area that had no signal. I would essentially not be able to connect back to the network.
After upgrading to 12.62.60.27U_26.13.04.19_M (tmobile) my problem went away. Of course, ymmv, but it was a good upgrade (for me)

What he said!!! Also, it made more sense to me to have the radio at the same version as the one T-Mobile pushed OTA to all the stock G2s (having my wife's phone as a reference helped)
