Android Viruses and Splashtop - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to catch a virus from an infected PC while being connected to a tablet using Splashtop or other remote apps?
I've been using Splashtop recently and it became a concern. While the PC is a Vista box, I would wager it could still carry a virus that can affect a linux based system. Is it likely that a virus can piggyback on the Splashtop connection?

No because you're using spashtop as a remote display. It doesn't actually RUN apps remotely on your tablet.
Think of your tablet as a remote LCD display to your computer.

That does make sense, but it is still sending data to the tablet. I assume it is very restricted access. It is not like a shared drive.

New feature? I was pretty sure the device didn't have haptic feedback...
Sent from my Nexus 7

generally no. and even if it did, it depends on the virus type.
desktop PCs use x86 and x64 instructions which are run by desktop processors and mobile devices use ARM instructions which are run by ARM and other mobile processors. the ARM processors cant really run x86 and x64 instructions correctly, so if your tablet were to be infected with an x86/x64 virus, it wouldnt really do much, if any harm at all. it would only be problematic if the virus/trojan/etc were designed to be run with the ARM instruction set.
if you are concerned, avast is free on google play. but generally not needed.

Questions about windows 8

Okay, I'm using windows 8 release preview x64 on my gateway desktop, and I need some help with a couple things.
First of all, metro apps will not load. I have tried several tweaks around xda and other sites and cannot get anything more than the app preview screen coming up for just a second, then closing. I have an ATI Radeon 5450HD graphics card, running proper amd catalyst drivers for windows 8, and all settings are correct.
Second, has anyone been able to get dfs tool working on windows 8? I've tried installing it in compatibility mode for windows XP, Vista, and 7, all with no luck.
Any help with either issue would be greatly appreciated... And sorry this isn't in a Q&A section, but I couldn't find Q&A forum for windows 8. TIA...

I have my Win 8 running in a VMware virtual machine. I noticed that Metro apps will timeout loading if it is taking too long.
The app eventually loads but does so minimized. Check your left side to see if it is running.
If you are seeing a lot of your apps doing this, you may need to upgrade your computer to something faster.

I understand that... But not a single one of the metro apps will start. They just bring up an app preview screen, then it drops to the background, and the app never actually opens.

I'd just reinstall. You have something wrong. Did it ever work? Maybe go back to a better point in time with System Restore.
You are logged in with a Live account, right? You can't load Metro apps with a local account (to my knowledge). You have to log on with a Live account.

Timeout
Yes, every metro app has 15 seconds to load, if it doesn't, them it will end.
i think you should reinstall the graphic driver and try this

Also did the metro apps work before or they have never worked

Windows 8 didn't run properly on my laptop too, had some papercuts as well. The specification requirements for Windows 8 are equal to those of Windows 7. If you can run Windows 7, you can run Windows 8. So, it's all just a bit of patience before RTM and the final release become available.

Windows 8 running on the NC is not going to happen. :crying:
But check out this video by Tinkernut on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5klJrX9ubc
He demonstrates how to use Splashtop streamer running on your NC (or any supported android/ios device) to connect to a Windows 8 PC (swiping is supported).
He has it running on a NC (or Nook Tablet, I can't tell) at around 1:50 in video.
I have not tried this myself, but it appears that this would at least allow you to experience Windows 8 on your NC. :highfive:
It pains me to say that your probably correct. I am however, going to try to prove you wrong. (Yeah, I'm that dedicated) BTW great video, but I want to use it without WiFi too. So that won't work.

Possible? Sure -- if you're Microsoft or have a MS Windows source code license. Otherwise, you can pretty much forget about it.

Is it possible to port Windows RT onto a Nexus 7?

Is it possible for Windows RT to be ported onto the Nexus 7? I was thinking that it would be possible because the Nexus and the Microsoft Surface have the same processor and on a 32GB Nexus, the storage would not be a problem. Please respond!
No
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
Its not possible, because Windows RT is a source closed operating system.
It also requires license fees and couldn't be posted here since it would be considered warez

It is actually the other way around mate, Windows has an excelent performance. I have a x86 tablet running Windows 8 and it's just incredable it would be very nice to see Nexus 7 running Windows RT since they (Win 8 and RT) share the same kernel.

Except RT is limited to the Windows Store, which is severely limited in its app selection. His analogy was correct. Just because it's fast doesn't mean it's a good alternative.
Unless you want to go nowhere fast.
Where do you get that they share the same kernel? Windows RT is but a small fraction of the size of Windows 8.

Samsung SideSync

This is amazing! Check this out everyone:

I cannot find where to download it though, it must not be available yet - very vague on the availability of this.
That I admit is f....ing awesome!!!.
Looks like someone has to buy the samsung notebook and rip it out lol.

I think the app is pre-installed on the S4 already? Check the Samsung Link app. I also think this is only supported for Samsung computers, but I could be mistaken.

From the web page:
"To use SideSync you’ll need any Windows PC running the app and a Samsung Android phone. ATIV laptops will come with SideSync preinstalled."
...but then on the Facebook page it says:
" Hi everyone - SideSync is currently compatible with Samsung ATIV Book, Tab and One devices running Windows 8, on which it comes pre-installed and is also available via SW Update. A version compatible with older Samsung Notebooks will be available soon. The companion app for Android phones can be downloaded via Samsung Apps. We hope this helps!"
I wonder if any of these damn review sites can get ANY of the information they are spewing correct. Oh well.

I've been looking for an installer and can't find one. Samsung doesn't even have it listed for download on their site. If you can find it, please link!
I am willing to bet that they will only make the app for the Samsung older PCs available via software update for those specific PCs. It would be interesting to see if they offer the app as a stand alone, and if it works on other PCs.
