I tried several ROMS on my Nexus, but there is a failure on all ROMS with Gingerbread. If the screen remains locked for a few minutes, I can not unlock it (do not turn on) and not let me restart or shut down the phone, I can only remove the battery and wait about 10/20 minutes to the phone automatically restarts.
I happened to CyanogenMod 7 (RC1 and RC2) and LeoGingerBread (both downloaded from this forum)

Thanks, in a couple of hours notice if I have failed the stock rom
I just tried the stock rom GRI40 and I was not locked, so I guess it will be the kernel in CM7.
Not having that problem at all on stock GRI40; by the way, i'm having an odd issue with GRI40 & Gingerbread. The time to auto-lock the screen uses to change by itself; i think it's on 2' by default, but i changed it to 30' on screen settings and also on Widgetlocker settings...well, once a day, the time changes to 2' again. Anybody else having the same issue? Ideas?
Sounds to me like more of a hardware failure. I have never had any problems unlocking my screen.
This has happened to me a few times.
Possible reasons:
1)bad custom kernel where the buttons dont work. (menu to unlock)
2)bad setcpu setting. i.e. max cpu at 300MHz when the screen is off
3)cpu pegged at 100%, If its at 100% for a certain amount of time the system auto reboots. Happens many a time with CM7 build 14 and words with friends for me.
Make sure u wipe. I've had stock rooted GB and many Cyan nightlys and RC 1&2 and never had this problem. Do you use trackball wake? Configure lockscreen settings in cyan settings. They also use gestures as well if the problem persists. Hopefully one of these options helps u out. BTW I usually wipe everything.

I doubt it is a hardware failure does not happen to me with Eclair, Froyo or Gingerbread stock, just happened with CM7

I don't use trackball wake, but my nexus is completely blocked, even if I press the unlock button, and I wipe everything before to flash CM7
Well it seems as a new member I can't post in the Dev section yet, so I guess I will post it here:
I have been having issues much like others with this rom locking the phone completely up. Most of the time, when I wake the phone the screen is upside down and has graphic artifacts on the screen. This of course causes me to have to pull the battery. Once the phone comes back up, I can literally hit the power button on/off about 10-12 times and it happens again. I have reinstalled the rom and followed the instructions for flashing the ROM 31 times (i keep a journal of it). I am still having the same issue. I have tried Faux's LV and the SV version of his kernal and have even gone back 3 previous version (tried both versions so, 8 kernals in all) and still have the same issue. Now a buddy of mine suggested turning the "screen animations" off, and since I have done that I haven't had the phone lock up on me anymore, however the lockscreen does occasionally flip 180 degrees, but simply hitting the power button off then on and it is ok.
That seems to be my only issue with the rom. I really wanted to post in the dev section, but I guess I have to get my post count up before I can help contribute to the thread.
Thanks again TeamRoyal for another AMAZING release, and I also appreciate you folks assisting us with our minor issues. Keep up the good work, and thanks again for your folks assistance.

That's strange did you do a full wipe and format sd card along with boot and system and followed there instructions about not touching it on first boot and all. I did that and had no issues. I'm running RC2 because I just like it more and have no issues so thats something else you can look into
I've had the exact same issue when using RC2 with faux's kernel. I've tried the LV and SV versions and still had the same problem.
Finally I gave up and just reinstalled RC2 without faux's kernel and I have not had any issues.

Yea I have wiped and formated everything. The install I am now on I actually waited a full 30 mins instead of recommended 5 min.Nothing against teamroyal as I have mad respect for what they do, but RoyalGinger has made me a pro at installing it
So far no kernal crashes, which has given me a perma-grin. I'm gonna flash back to the latest LV version of faux kernel (the one that came with it). I'm sure it will be fine as I think the whole problem has to do with the screen off animation. I'll report back with my results.
Update:
It is the screen off animation that is causing my issue. I have flashed the latest kernel and everytime I have the off animation on, it locks. On screen animation works when on by itself, but turn the off animation on, power on and off a couple of times, and it will crash. I'll try to grab the logs and submit them.
Well seems everytime usb debugging is on it simply won't crash, and I can't get emulator to record when the phone crashes. Sorry I can't get a logcat
Same here on my wife's phone. Had to restore a 2.3.2 nandroid because both (CM7 rc2 and RG 1.3) were freezing on wake. Dunno what the cause is because on my mytouch RG 1.3 runs fine since it dropped......
If u read thru the post for Royalginger 1.3 it says that the best kernel for the rom is the kernel that it comes with... it also says u will get best/smoothest response with it set at smartass... I'm not sure if its changed since I've read but give it a try...
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
So the good news is I was able to get a logcat. I didn't realize that when the phone completely freezes (power on/off does nothing) you can still dump the logcat, hooooray for me. So here is my logcat file, and for the record this ONLY happens when I have the off and on screen animations enabled in the "CyanogenMod settings", with them off I can power on and off without the phone crashing.
[ROM] - RoyalGinger 1.3
[Kernel] - version 2.1.0 Low Voltage
[CPU Frequency] 245~1113
[Governor] Smartass
[Theme] - Honeybread (CM7 honeycomb theme)
[Live Wallpaper] - None
Update:
I did what was instructed in the dev section for flashing the latest Faux Kernel (2.1.2.1). I wiped the cache and delvikcache. I then fixed permissions and installed the kernel. Once the phone got to the lock screen, I waited 15 minutes for the kernel to "settle", immediately rebooted and let it sit for another 15 minutes.
Once that was I done, I enabled both the on and off screen animations, and after power on and off about 20 times, it crashed the phone again. So I am still having the same issue. Also as a heads up, I tried different themes just incase it was the theme, but that made no difference. So I reverted back to screen on/off animations as all off, and still no lockups. I have attached another logcat file, just incase there is some new data in it.
On another note, there simply isn't any last_kmsg file, so I'm sorry I can get you folks the file. It isn't on the phone when it crashes or even when the phone works correctly.
Have you done anything with spare parts?
Nope I haven't touched Spare Parts. I'm really trying to get this issue resolved before I setup anything on the phone. Maybe the 1.3.1 release will resolve the issue, but time will tell.

gitm - 1.3.1 should be out by tonight, barring anything weird coming up last minute in testing
and this has the new 2.1.2.1 faux kernel built in but if you want to try in the mean time - go to his thread and flash that kernel (wipe both caches and fix permissions, then flash kernel, then settle for 5 mins on initial boot, reboot, settle another 5 min, then go)
can't remember, are you using stock launcher or a 3rd party?
Using launcher pro.
As for the new kernel, it is still causing the same issue. In my logcats, it says "cpu pegged", and that is pretty odd. Hopefully 1.3.1 will fix it, but I will keep testing and keep you posted
Once in a while when trying to answer an incoming call the unlock slider won't respond. I will slide my thumb to unlock and ...nothing. When this happens the call will just go to voicemail . The workaround is to touch the power button to turn off screen , then touch it again to wake it up ,then the slider will work and I can answer the call. Sometimes this takes too long and I miss the call.
This is not a deal-breaker as it only happens 5% of the time , still it is annoying. I have tried different roms with no real difference. Anybody else have this problem? Any advice other than get a new phone under warranty?
Ditto. And I always act as you did to work around the issue, only difference is, I haven't missed a call due to this.
In any case, based on experience, the chance of this happening could be minimized (if not eliminated) by always locking the phone from the "desktop" (e.g. do not lock the phone when an app is running).
BACK STORY:
I remember this happening (more than once) when someone called me up after a train ride. And the last thing I could recall is that I have locked the phone while playing Angry Birds / Fruit Ninja / Zenonia 2, etc.
But it still sucks that it happens.
I guess my real question is , are all Nexus s doing this sporadically , even rarely , or is my phone defective?
question... are the phones plugged in to a wall charger when this happens?
Nope. Only happened to me when I under clocked the CPU with Setcpu using the powersave profile (I was just testing things out).

I'm not sure if everyone's having this, but I'm with you on this. I'm on stock but rooted 2.3.3. Experienced this since 2.3.1.
EDIT: My wife has this problem too, since 2.3.1 until 2.3.3 (not rooted).

Mine did it stock , I rooted and loaded roms to see if that would fix the problem , lessened but still there
My nexus s (i9020T) has exactly the same problem. I've also tried to flash different ROMs, including CM-7rc2 and stock 2.3.3, and the problem remains.
I tried to bind Multi-touch Visualizer 2 to long pressing home button, and found the when screen is unresponsive, it can still detect press near edges very well, but not the center. While I press at the edge and drap across the center, it keeps tracking my finger correctly. In addition, Locking and unlocking the screen can solve the problem temporally. I connect my phone with adb, and tried to "cat /dev/input/event0" The behavior confirms what I see in Multitouch Visualizor 2: the when the center of screen is unresponsive, nothing can be read from the device node.
I read the mxt224 touch screen controller doc, and it seems the chip features self-calibration, and thus I believe the "lock & unlock" will trigger the chip to tune it self in some way. I've also read the driver code of nexus s, htc incredible and moto droid x, all using the same controlling chip. Both HTC and moto would send calibrate command to the chip during resume, but sumsang does not. I guess this might be the reason, but I'm not skilled enough to port the drivers
I experienced it twice so far i think, but only have the device for a little more than 2 weeks.
I am on stock 2.3.1 currently.
Beside the lock&unlock method, I discovered a new way of getting screen back to work: rub your hands a couple of times and touch again... Anyway it seem the screen is not well calibrated.
problem seems fixed with my customized kernel
Last night, I modified the touchscreen driver and mach settings a bit on the source of netarchy's nice kernel, and compiled a kernel of my own. The screen now seems working well with my new kernel
Never have experienced this on the nscollab rom which is cm7 and kernel together stable. I suggest give it a shot

May I know how to perform the suggested steps, i have been experience twice since i bought it on 2 weeks ago
I would like to bring this issue up again (after so long) as I am still randomly experiencing this exact issue even with Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 (Stock & Custom ROMs). Any fix yet?
(Item: N82E16834230172)
.. & I'm just not sure if i should return it or if these issues are pretty much whats expected.
I have not upgraded to ICS from HC
Problems so far:
1. Re-booted twice on first day i had it. I'd been using it all day (installing/using apps etc) - I used it all day 2 days after that w/out issue.
2. Re-booted last night? Not sure exactly but there were no apps suspended in the bg from the night before (~8 hours before) - i had quite a few in the bg
3. 2 out of 3 times so far if i "shut down" *the power button will not power it back on* - i have to plug it into the wall/power for it to turn back on
They aren't the worst issues..yet? I don't know.. I'm pretty happy with HC at the moment & will probly avoid ICS upgrade for a bit.
Stick with it?
#3 is not supposed to happen.
#1 and #2, it depends on exactly which version of the Honeycomb firmwares you are running. Honeycomb 3.2.1 didn't do those for me, but the versions pre-3.2.1 had occasional incidents.
It's 3.2.1
We can assume that you know that you have to hold the button down for three seconds to power it on when it's completely off. Therefore, I would see about swapping it because #3 sounds like a major problem.

Yeah i just shut it down again and it would not come on until plugging into the wall. Problem seems pretty consistent. Ugh i really don't want to have to go through this.
QUESTION: how can i pretty much wipe this device of the apps/personal info i've entered into it before sending it back?
QUESTION: Try ICS then if i'm gonna ship it back anyways?
To wipe the device, you run "Factory Reset Data" in the Settings.
Sure, might as well try out ICS if you're curious.
Sometimes when mine gets a random reboot/shutdown I have to hold the power button down for about 10 seconds to turn it on. Try this if you haven't already.
yeah the power button issue may be it not being totally shut off, so when you hold power you are shutting it down instead of starting it. happened to me a few times so figured it was worth a mention.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Although it's a bit inconsistent on whether or not i have to hold it down for 3 seconds or 10+ one way or another (after a struggle) it does appear to consistently come up. Emphasis on struggle though.
Have you tried any custom roms yet? I personally seem to have a more stable tablet when using a custom rom due to the various tweaks and fixes.
Just install ICS - such a relief from Honeycomb!

This thing decided to re-boot randomly again. So i decided to upgrade to ICS (4.0.3) - nearing last ditch efforts.
Problems came up right away:
1. Browser having strange connectivity issues? I have Wifi Analyzer and watching the scrolling graph i don't see any dropping or problems with the connection itself. So i'm not sure what the situation is but sometimes it just doesn't want to load pages - I can't fully say if Dolphin has the same problems or not.
2. Screen tearing. Fairly frequently there's a diagonal tear occurring across the screen, when switching around in/out of apps.
3. The shutdown issue. This problem is at best the same, if not worse. So in hopes of shrugging off the other issues i did a "shut down" and i seriously battled with the power button and never got it to come back up w/out plugging into into the wall.
- What's interesting is how it always comes up RIGHT AWAY once it's plugged into the wall. I tried and tried and tried again with holding the power button 3-10-20-30+ seconds random intervals nothing worked. Hard to express the amount of times & different timings i tried.
So i'm gonna give it a whirl like this for a while and see.. i might end up doing a factory reset .. if problems persist after that it's going back to newegg
Edit: i just tried to play a youtube video and it stopped trying to cache 1/4th through it.. then i pulled up Aljazeea live and it's echoing/choking/stalling .. these problems didn't exist prior. Also, i noticed another streaming (scanner radio) app not doing so well earlier too... heh

Do a factory reset already and test it without installing any apps. You need to find out whether the problem is with hardware or software.
There's a good chance that it's a hardware problem since you got it refurbished. Maybe it was broken already and Asus didn't completely fix it.
Do yourself a favor. Root it and install the latest CM9 build. I was having all kinds of reboot and sleep issues with the stock ROM, mainly the ICS one but a few issues with HC as well. CM9 has been rock solid for me so far.

Fixed it for you
CM9 might not suit him, so instead he should try out several roms until he finds one hes satisfied with
Telling him to install a specific rom is fine, but it doesnt really help him out.
That said, since you brought up "rock solid", Team EOS build 19 has been really rock solid for me. Currently 202h uptime and counting.
Wow i didn't think things could get much worse but they did.
I decided to do a factory reset because generally things hadn't improved. Initially after the reset things were "OK" ("better" @ 1st but short lived)
Then a while later..
It appears the connectivity of the wireless has completely died. It will connect to wireless fine but is incapable of anything beyond that. No web pages, no connectivity/data transfer in any apps.
I did another factory reset, installed nothing, imported nothing, signed into nothing.. same issue.
Even though i have 2 other netbooks right here w/no issues at all, i tried resetting the AP multiple times. No diff.
Just before the wifi dying it was acting like it was before the reset, where things would randomly fail to stay connected, videos wouldn't fully cache, web pages wouldn't fully load etc. (general connectivity problems that didn't exist in HC, but have in ICS since update)
I think ICS was really the nail in the coffin for this thing.
I recently wiped all of my phone (factory+cache) and installed the latest 4.0.3 official update from SAMSUNG.
I also enabled the FULL DISK ENCRYPTION while doing this.
I am now waiting to decrypt it to see if this problem persits if I turn the encryption off.
The problem is that if I leave my phone locked for a few hours/minutes it randomly won't turn on the screen again, when I press the power button.
A hard reboot (holding) fixes this everytime. But this is not a fix, we all know.
It never happened on Gingerbread 2.3.5.
I am beginning to suspect there's a bug in the ICS firmware, although it's 4.0.3, it could slip through.
It's hard to say what's causing the trouble. I have connected the phone to USB now. Waiting for the symptom to show again. I assume I can get a good logcat.
adb shell logcat > logcat.txt
So I'm waiting for an error / event of POWER button at this moment, and will keep logging till it produces the same error again.
Regards,
That's called the black screen of death. It's an ICS bug. For now, rebooting seems to be the only solution ice seen on xda.

I can't believe this ! Is this a SAMSUNG or an Android/ICS problem ?
My version is:
4.0.3
IM74K.XXLPQ
Any custom ROMs addressed this issue or how can you avoid this on ICS? Is the only solution to go back to Gingerbread ?
Hi guys, hope your well.
I am having a similar issue too. I am on Hydrogen AOKP Rom, and I get exactly the same. However, apart from just the blank screen, my phone gets extremely hot too.The only way to get it back on is to remove the battery. Very annoying!!
I cant seem to figure what it is. I have tried to search here on XDA for the resolution but to no avail. Could it be the Kernal? The Modem? Tweaking via SetCPU? or a combination of all? Atleast if I could get pointed to the right direction that'll be a start! lol
Are you guys getting the overheating problem too?
Its a bit like continual posting in the wrong forum nobody knows why ??

No overheating (yet) you can help if you can keep logcatting through usb cable till it lock/standby freezes and your screen won't come on when pressing power ..
Install SDK + Drivers, write in commandprompt:
adb shell logcat > save.txt
Wait for the error / freeze where screen won't come on.
Then paste here or upload somewhere might contain a lead to a solution!

Nah!
It's there on all the kernels. I myself am a Siyah user.
I moved back to GB for this weird and terribly serious issue, but that time i didn't know it was a common problem.
This is ICS' best feature for sure.
I really CAN NOT believe how this issue is NOT yet known well and haven't brought in to front line. Google knows about it and yet I haven't seen any official statements about it. How ****in unbelievable or not perhaps? Google way?? Well **** it.
Utter Nonsense. What i wonder is, really, does any Android user actually use the phone but show off only??
I can almost reliably reproduce this problem.
I'm on ICS LP7 stock XEU version. When I have downloads running with Ttorrent, there's an almost 50% chance that the screen will not turn on once it goes to sleep. The phone is not frozen as my downloads continue to run; just that nothing is being shown on the display. If you hold the volume down button you will feel the phone vibrate to tell you it went into silent mode, which means the phone didn't freeze. After about a minute or so if I try again everything will work as normal, until I put the screen to sleep again.

Do the logcat as I provided the correct command to extract it to a file.
Then do your torrent thing, and make it crash- so we can debug !

Hi,
It happened to me as well after the ICS update and I tried to plug the AC charger to see what happens, and surprise...the screen turned on .
It's not a fix (especially when away with no accessories) but it's better than nothing, hope this helps; also you should try plugging the USB cable. Tell me if it helps.
Thanks,

Yep,I mean under volting, you need to look your kernel, and I think it doesn't work fine because your kernel has under volting so much.

Reading around and installing load monitor from play store should fix this until a better solution is found

Best solution is to stay on GB because is more stable, until ICS gets better cooked!
