Error when flashing a rom - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hi there,
I have encountered a problem when i want to flash a custom rom.
I installed all the neccesary software, however when i want to instal the zip from sd card i keep getting an error that says that the zip is bad.
I have tried different roms and I have encountered the problem over and over again.
Can someone help me with this?!
Thanks,
Bojan

how are you moving the zip to the sd? because magldr usb transfers corrupt larger files.
also, it usually helps to write a brief step by step of what you have done so far. Don't just say 'i have downloaded all the software' and assume that everything you did so far is correct, because 9 out of 10 problems are user error, and very often its an assumption that causes the problem.

Also check your rom by double-clicking the zip file (no need to unzip unless you want to), a good download will not record errors upon opening the rom's zip files). There are instances that a download is bad and yes copy the rom through a card reader. :good:

Hi,
Backup all data before starting anything new.
All coredroid roms come with detailed installation instructions.
Place the coredroid rom ZIP on the root of your sd card.
Flash new partition,go to CWM ,wipe data, cache partition, dalvik(advanced)>install zip from sd card>choose zip>install>reboot
Thanks....the installation description was for version 1.12....your description worked fine....thanks!

[Q] Help with downgrading from CyanogenMod 7 to Android 1.6 Stock

Hi, guys. First of all, thanks for all of your hard work and time you put into all of these custom ROMs.
So, I rooted my HTC Tattoo, then flashed it with CyanogenMod 7 and I am very happy how ROM works. I was wondering how can I get back to stock (for warranty reasons) since I was stupid enough to not make a backup of Stock rom with ROM Manager.
First, I tried installing RUU exe file(RUU_Click_HTC_WWE_1.67.405.6_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver) from Winows 7 computer, but when I connect my phone to PC, i got error message 170 saying "USB Connection Error".
When that didn't work, I downloaded and put CLICIMG.zip (I belive thats rom.zip from RUU) on root of my SD card, then rebooted to HBoot, but i got error saying something like "No images found in CLICIMG". I also tried to rename this file to CLICKIMG.zip, CLICDIAG.zip, but that didn't work either.
Hope you can help me somehow.
Thanks.

Hope the CLICIMG.zip you have downloaded is not corrupt.
Best thing would be to copy the rom.zip form the temp folder,
Here is what you can do:
After you started RUU wait until you get the prompt to proceed or you get the usb error and don't close the application
Then you can get rom.zip file from following folder
"C:\Users\<your user name>\appdata\Local\Temp"
replace "your user name" with your account name in windows
copy the rom.zip and rename it to CLICIMG.zip
place it in root of SDCARD and proceed
Thanks for replay. I managed to resolve this, I will post little guide soon on this topic.

nandroid backups must be placed on sd card in /clockworkmod/backup/
also note that there must be a sub-directory within /clockworkmod/backup that contains the nandroid files
such as: /clockworkmod/backup/my_nandroid/ <--- your nandroid files go in here
thanks alot zyxwvut
No problem I hope you got it all sorted.
Ya know, without these threads I would've been stuck with an expensive paper-weight a long time ago. It's all about being a community and helping each other. Thats what we try to do here

I'm having an error too, try to do this but still get the error when trying to install the nandroid backup.
Here is what i did:
I place the zip file on sd card in /clockworkmod/backup/
also I unzip the file and place the files under: /clockworkmod/backup/my_nandroid
after trying to instal the zip i get this error: "E:Error in /system/bootmenu/script/recovery.sh
(Result: No such file or directory)"
I guess I'm either doing something wrong or the zip file is missing something!
im having the same here
cant run nandroid/flash rom/factor reset via cwm
I have CWM installed and have been able to flash roms in the past. But now, when ever i try to flash a rom, run a nandroid backup, or a factory reset… it just basically wipes out my user info. Goes back to stock with all of my applications still loaded so i get bazillion force closes. I have verified my nandroid and it is good… i just cant get cwm to load it. Any ideas? thx in advance!

There is no better ROM
Actualy, we should try both CM7 and CM10 and choose what to use, I've chosen CM7 because I've had problem with 3G connection on CM10, it's slow and I cound't actvate wifi tether without doing a workaround.

NC Formatting Questions

I'm getting an error when I try to install a .zip file through CWM recovery.
I get an error saying : E: Can't Open /sdcard/x (No such file or directory exists).
I've looked around and have learned that my best bet is to format my SD card. I can do that just fine, but I don't want to lose my data. I'm not flashing a ROM, it's just a custom lockscreen clock. If I format, I'll have to redo everything and lose all my data, apps, and system files (I'm running CM7 off of my SD card). But I need that for my zip to even be worth it.
I'm running a nightly build. Is there any possibility/plausibility that this could be a ROM-specific bug?
Is there any advice as to what I should do?
Thanks in advance.

If you are running CM7 on SD you do not flash zips to it with ordinary CWM. Ordinary CWM will flash things to emmc. But maybe that is what you are trying to do. You do not say what you have on emmc.
If you want to flash the zip to the SD installation, make sure the zip file starts with update- and put it in the boot partition just like you do for roms. Then boot to SD recovery and the script will install it to SD.
An alternate way to flash things to SD installed CM7 is to use a special CWM modified for use on SD installs. You can read about and get it by looking at my tips thread linked in my signature. Item B5.
If you want to flash to emmc, make sure you are using an ordinary SD to put the zip on. Ordinary CWM always looks for partition one on the sd for the zip file. On your CM7 SD, the file is on partition 4 so CWM cannot find it.
So I'm trying to flash a new clock for my NC's unlock screen. The zip is called HoneyCombClock.zip. So do I just rename it to update.zip? That's not going to mess anything up?
Also yes, I booted into boot menu and selected emmc recovery. I thought that I needed to do CWM recovery.
I'll try the proposed method when I get a confirmation that it's not going to mess up my NC.

You need to find out if it is a flashable zip... or if it is an app that has been zipped... I'm betting on the latter.

If it is a flashable zip like Dizzy pointed out, you should rename to update-HoneyCombClock.zip. But I agree with Dizzy that it is probably a zipped apk file, not a flashable zip. Try looking at it with a zip program and see what you get.
It is indeed a flashable zip. I extracted it to make sure.
Also, I'm curious as to what you (leapinlar) meant when you instructed me to put the zip in the boot partition. From what I understand, that's the root of the SD card, right? Or has it changed?

Yes, it is what shows up on your PC when you take the card out of the nook and put it in the PC. Copy the zip there, rename it like I suggested above, put back in nook. When booting hold the n key until the boot menu comes up. Select SD and recovery and finish booting. The recovery script will install the zip.
I'm doing it and I'm not getting any errors, but when I boot into recovery, it runs through and shuts down without installing the zip. I don't understand what I could be doing wrong.

And you renamed it like I said with update- on the front? (Don't forget the dash and no spaces.)
The file name is "update-HoneyCombClock". That should work right?
Sorry about these extended questions.

and .zip at the end?
It's automatically recognized as a zip file. If I put .zip at the end, it will show up on my tablet as "update-HoneyCombClock.zip.zip" Nevertheless, I'll try it and see what I get. I'll laugh if it works.

Even if you get it flashing with your SD setup... it may not work if it requires honeycomb and you're running gingerbread.
It's meant for cm7. Here's a link to the thread I got the zip from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959602

What does the script say when it boots to SD recovery? Does it say install zip not found? And when you take it back out and look at it in the PC, is it still there? If it installed, the script will remove it. I know you can have your PC set to not show known extensions so it looks like it is missing. Temporarily disable that so you can really see the name. The script requires that it be named precisely, update- at the beginning, .zip at the end and no spaces.
The script doesn't mention any .zip installation. The zip file stays on my sd card root after recovery.
I just set my computer to show extensions. I'll retry the installation and make sure that every detail is perfect.
I remember doing something similar when I flashed a nightly on my nook. It was a .zip file. It wasn't flashing, so I looked around and got the impression that it would only instal if it had "update-" at the beginning. So I renamed it and it installed. I don't know what's up with my NC now. Is there any possibility that this could be a bug with the nightly? Or are installations not affected by ROM's.

No the existing rom will make no difference. It could be the zip itself. It has to be structured like a rom zip. It needs a /system directory with the files you want to flash. And it needs a META-INF folder with the script file buried in it. Where did you get the zip? Maybe I could look at it for you.
EDIT: I just downloaded and looked at it. It is just adding a single font to your /fonts folder. Nothing else. You can do that manually with root explorer. Just extract the font from the zip and copy to /system/fonts.
I got the zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959602
The clock can be flashed on any device with the following zip in recovery just like before.

The zip has a font file and a meta-inf folder.
Look at my edit above
I replaced the file, but now I'm in an infinite bootloop. It just keeps doing the skateboarding android animation. Please tell me this isn't a problem with permissions. I don't know if I can even edit permissions now.

[Q] Nexus 7 ar install help

To avoid filling the forum with question i'm just going to create this thread and ask all my questions here.
I finally rooted my nexus 7 on my mac and now am hoping to install a USB ROM, i couldnt post a link but it seems to be most popular for in car installs.
I downloaded the file and compressed it to a .zip file then tossed it onto the android. Next i booted into clockwork recovery the selected install zip from sd card>Choose zip from sd card> 0/>cm-10.zip>yes - install cm-10.zip
After this the tablet says
Finding update package...
opening update package...
installing update...
installation aborted...
Can anyone help me and/or tell me what i'm doing wrong? all help is appreciated. Thankyou

A more acceptable procedure is to find - via SEARCHING - closely related threads first, and post your questions in those threads. That demonstrates to people that you've actually tried to help yourself by searching. If you actually have something unique to say, in that circumstance you start a new thread.
"Help me install a ROM" is not a new idea here on XDA, whether you have a problem with it or not.

It's already a .zip file to begin with when you download it. Is your Mac uncompressing it automatically when you download it?
If so, use something other means (not Safari?) to download it. FTP. Wget. Firefox for Mac.
Then, if the ROM developer publishes rom file MD5 signatures, validate that you can compute the same checksum on the file downloaded to your computer.
If you then subsequently copy it to something else (such as the tablet), check the file length and/or the MD5 signature of the copied file as well.
Was there not some additional message on the screen besides "installation aborted"? Details are important.
The most probable guess at the moment (from your narrative) is that you borked the download and/or did something else that made the custom recovery unhappy.
BTW, when you install a new ROM for the first time, you generally:
(a) make a full Nandroid backup first (using the custom recovery)
(b) perform a "factory reset" in the custom recovery,
(c) flash of the ROM file.
Attempting the last step without the first two is just begging for trouble.
good luck
