Hi peeps. Had to sell my note for budgetary reasons but now have this 2nd hand defy and to be fair its pretty nice
Anyhoo I've put jellybean on it but since I changed the button brightness setting they now stay off completely. Only time they come on is when I got back into the brightness setting but as soon as I exit that (on whatever brightness level) they go off again
Any ideas how to fix?
Cheers
Ben

I got note 3 days ago. I notice that The brightness always jumping, sometime happen with open application with white background.
Wonder any one have the same problem or just me. I'm on the KJ4 Kernel

I got the same kernel but without the auto brightness jump you are experiencing, unless I move my hand over the camera.
I suggest goto Settings --> Display and un-tick "Auto adjust screen power" if it's on and see if that makes any difference.
Auto-brightness is hopeless anyway, turn it off, as well as the setting Bigmile mentioned. Then, to make quick on-the-fly adjustments to your Note's brightness long press in the notifications area and slide left and right till you get the brightness you want. Much better way IMO.

Just switch from iPhone. IPhone have perfect auto brightness adjustment. However I still like the note very mush as it have nice BIG screen.
Hope it will fix in future update anyway.

define applications with white backgrounds?
if youre referring to the browser, it has its own independent brightness setting that can be adjusted inside the browser.

I call my self an enthusiast and I didn't knew that? Well, the saying "You learn something new every day" is proven once more.
Been using android since launch(I guess it was implemented on GB?) and I admit I NEVER thought of sliding the notification bar icons neihter left or right in the way NZtechfreak suggested.
It's possible that I might have done it by accident, but even IF I did, I did not even noticed it. You got my Thanks.
Hi guys
I'm a recent convert from an iPhone so please be gentle! If my phone goes into power saving mode, it reduces the screen brightness, reduces the screen timeout etc. but when I plug it back in and charge it, even though its back up to 100% the power save settings are still in place, and I have to manually put the settings back.
Its this right? I would have thought it would automatically remove the power save settings once the battery goes above 30%?
Thanks!
Robsa

You need to configure "Custom Power Saving Mode" and specify the battery level you want it to be triggered at. It should turn off automatically then after your phone is charged beyond this point - but this feature is a bit bugged so it might not work as intended.
Yeah I too have to manually turn it off, But there is a toggle in the status bar, So its just 1 tap away
Thanks guys.I am still getting used to a phone that crashes and doesn't work as intended sometimes! I do love I it though!
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
Massive pro tip: Use something like Llama (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kebab.Llama&hl=en) and configure your own "power saving mode" instead. It's just a matter of making rules like "if battery is < 30%, disable wifi" and the like.
The built-in one is a bit crap to start with, and kind of broken anyway.

That's thanks to Samsung's bloatware. Consider AOSP Android like CM9, only then will you see how fast, smooth and relatively error-free Android really is.

^^^On that note ^^^
If you do try those ROMs, as good as they are, you'll loose the pen support. If you don't use it or s-memo etc... Then go for it.

Hey Guyz , its me again.
This is the first time I'm posting in General section.
Wish me luck
SO the thing is ,
The phone was all right till yesterday night.
I have a bad habit of putting my SGY on charging mode and then sleep the whole night.
The GY keeps on charging for full night......
So , today morning when i started my phone , and used it for about a minute ,
the DISPLAY brightness suddenly dropped. It even wasn't equal to the normal lowest brightness , more than it.
I can't even see the Wallpaper or anything now.
After i removed the battery and put it on again , and tried to switch my phone on , I couldn,t even notice the Samsung Logo.
After some time I noticed that the phone was switching on , but at VERY VERY VERY LOW BRIGHTNESS!!!:crying::crying::crying:
So the phone vibrated after long pressing the switch on button...
And the phone was on now...
But i couldn't see anything again......
This time i noticed that the phone was working nicely.... , but the brightness was REALLY LOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:crying::crying::silly:
And even the screen is working , i mean that the phone responds to touch ,and i can even see some white objects like the Applications menu in settings ,
the menu to select launcher etc.
So all i want is immediate help on this topic.....
Please help me guys...............:crying::good::laugh::silly:

Hmmm...
Maybe you need glasses bro Haha
Im just KIDDING! :silly:
To be honest I think that something has blown in your phone bro
The only thing you can try is installing a stock firmware through Odin and clear all data and cache and see if that fixes the problem, if not... well then you need to take it in for repairs. Sorry
Or if you know somebody else with a Y, ask if you can try their battery in your phone, could be a battery problem Really not sure.

Hello,
I picked up my GS4 about a week ago but haven't really used it in direct sunlight until today. I was outside, and the sun was shining brightly on the screen. Home screen was fine, and darker images were ok, but if I were to go to an app with a primarily white background, or open up something which used the keyboard (texting) the screen would flicker pretty noticeably. Brightness is all the way up, and auto tone was off.
Has anyone else seen this?
yup this is normal esp when using the keyboard.
Im not sure if it will be fixed.

I guess my question is, is this a hardware issue with many GS4's or a minority. I came across a thread on the Tmobile GS4 forum where people were experiencing it, but it seems not everyone is.

Its a hardware thing, but also its only in touchwiz so a developer might be able to turn it off so to speak.
It adjusts the color and tone no matter what to save the display from overheating and or burning in...
Does it a lot and I notice it cause im weird about those kinds of things.
If you use CM 10.1 or AOKP its gone.
ive made some progress with the RGB light meter on this; hoping a friend can write up some code so we can test out a 'smoothed out' transition and sampling rate and one that is sped up, averaged faster, but will take up more CPU and RAM and battery but more accurate.
here is another thread regarding it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280715
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284726
Maybe if someone who is using CM10 or AOKP could test it to see if it is a software issues and not a hardware issue?
edit: slade and jet replied while I was writing this...thanks for the info. looks like it is touchwiz related.
edit2: just went out in the sun again to test a lot of different options in the display settings (which none worked) but is seems it is only happening when the keyboard is enabled. I am using swiftkey.
yeah TW and that sensor communicate; i believe the sensor itself probably works better ALONE, but TW changes it and throttles it for either battery or screen safety.
It is always dependent on what is being pulled up on the screen, though it can be mitigated quite a bit if you disable all power saving and screen auto features, and leave brightness under 80% or so.
yea anything under 80% in direct sun is basically black. all power saving and screen auto modes were disabled. i covered up all of the sensors too and it still flickered....

Not just a sensor thing per-say.
It's hard to explain, they most likely did it because they didn't want the amoled to burn in.
Its the same reason why the brightness goes up another 34% or so on auto above the max brightness. Only uses it when needed to save the screen and battery.
Does it on youtube too btw, bring up a video on wide screen then tap it and you'll see the drastic color shift
I noticed this thing when I got my phone also. I thought I was just imagining it but I guess it's an actual problem

No that's not possible, its hard coded into touchwiz, this isn't a bug or anything...
If people say they don't have it; they're not noticing it.

Thought my eyes were going crazy. Mine does this too. It even did it once under some fluorescent lights. It's not annoying enough to matter but it would be cool if it gets fixed.
Hi,
Have any of you noticed when you push the home or the power button to turn on your phone to unlock it the screen is really bright for a second then it switches to your settings? Has anyone experienced this and if so has anyone found a way to stop it?

Nu such issue on mine. Might be because of auto brightness, the sensor is off when the screen is off.
Yes. I have see this issue in my brother in law note 3. We all bought 3 note 3. 2 of it doesn't have this issue. I wonder is it hardware issue? Since the other two phone will never having the brightness problem.

I noticed this on my Nexus 7 2013, it's really annoying when you want to say read in bed and the lights are off it's far too bright. I found using the app Brightness Adjuster solved this. It lets you go way below the firmware level of brightness and I have found it excellent. May work on your NIII.
