nook root help - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I had just recently rooted and flashed my nook with cyanogenMod 7 and installed gapps zip file. Now at various times I get "android.process stop" any ideas on how to get this to stop?
Thank you

Please let us know what versions of each you installed. It is important to figure out what might be causing the issue. Also, if it is the first time you have done this, and you haven't spent much time personalizing, I would just flash again to see if it resolves the issue.

Go in to recovery wipe all but EMMC. Dont touch it. After a full proper wipe reflash. If you dont proper wipe you get klingons some times. Lol

I have cyanogenMod=7.1.0-encore and gapps-ics-20120317-signed

Please download and install (flash zip from CWM) from here http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip.
You have the ICS(CM9) version of gapps for the CM7 version.

I've downloaded that version of gapps and still had the same issue.

I would do what Hal suggested "Go in to recovery wipe all but EMMC. Dont touch it. After a full proper wipe reflash. If you dont proper wipe you get klingons some times."
Then flash the gapps version recommended in above post. If you are still experiencing issues, then start from scratch, make sure to wipe all caches (don't touch EMMC) and use only the gapps mentioned here.

So what is EMMC? Is that the primary operating system?

EMMC is the main partition for the Nook <where the main system resides>. When I clear up my system I 'wipe' "cache partition" and Advance> Wipe Dalvik cache. You access these from the CWM recovery.

I wipe /system, /data, /cache, and dalvik-cache. Then flash the new ROM. I would also suggest giving CM7.2 a try instead of 7.1 along with the gapps mentioned previously. Wiping /system is actually an important step for getting everything settled correctly,

I completed the steps that you recommended and install the gapps that you suggested and did all the wipes. As soon as I restarted the nook this is what I got "Sorry! The process android.process.media has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close"

Have you tried Mirage cm 7.2 yet?

OP of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344873
Scroll down to downloads. This is a very stable and usable ROM. Hope this helps.

Thanks for helping me out everyone with this I greatly appreciate it. Something else I am looking at now, is there a way to convert a java file (jar) into an android file (apk)? I ask this because I have found an app call andro lite what it does is it allows you to use your android as a keyboard, mouse, and others input devices with your computer but you have to download the server file which is a jar file. I'm think if it is possible to do this then I can have the jar file on my nook and use my droid phone as the input device.
Thanks in advance for the help and advice.

I use a VNC client app for that sort of thing. Valence acts as keyboard and mouse via VNC and lets me run demos while walking around the room.
VNC servers are available or even supplied for most OS's.

So I looked them up in the play store and from understanding of that it is more for android controlling windows. I'm looking for android to android type. I want to be able to use the keyboard from my droid 4 (whether physcial or virtual) to type in or operate on my nook.

Please PM Divine and have him move this thread to Q&A. This has NOTHING to do with development.

This does have relate to development, how do we develope the ability to connect one droid to another droid so as to have multiple user interfaces.

I don't think you understand the differences between asking a question and development. This place is for posting a ROM. Check Q&A and post there. PM a mod and have them move this to the correct section.

Custom MTD Partitions for the Wildfire, My Findings

Hi all.
I'm sorry first of all on creating a new thread as I'm not allowed to add to dev posts.
I have created Custom MTD Partitions of : 140, 5
using CyanogenMod 7 Nightly: 220
(New Market)
I have tried to download a game third blade and i get an error of insufficient space
like ''Hanakie'' in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233340
I have downgraded the market now to an old one and now able to download this game.
I am going to try tonight to upgrade the market from old to new but not a fresh install of a rom and see if if Im still able to. I will post my findings when done.
ps I would like to thank all the Developers here for for making my phone awesome and interesting til my next upgrade and then will have 2 phones to tinker with.
5mb cache is too low i had the same problem
edit: cm7 should move cache files to data/local if they are larger but this dont work for me i got the low memory message
Only problem I had with 5mb cache was in clockwork recovery, I always got an error as there wasn't enough space for it to write a log.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda premium
I have tried these MTD Partitions: 140,5 140,10 140,20 140,25 and 140,35 with same results.
Im currently running at 145,45 as i know works great, but would like to see if i can get a little more space.
I like to try everything on here lol i love beta testing.

You were able to fit the latest CM Nightly on a 110MB /system partition? Did you go for a barebones build? AFAIK, the standard CM will not fit on a 110MB system partition. (Unless of course, it is stripped)
its not bearbone as such ujst took out all ringtones, all but on each alarm tone and notification tone and removed some of the not needed apps from the rom like email, music player (got power amp), cm wallpapers, live wallpapers u get the picture
hi 3xeno (thank you for your hard work)
I'm not using any Apps2SD any more as wanted all my stuff on internal memory.
i did a
1. wipe/factory reset
2. MTD Partitions Guide but instead of restoring from backup i did a fresh flash of
cm7 nightly 220
3. Then flashed gapps-gb-20110828 for Market

Is anyone except me able to run 5mb cache without market and recovery errors?

I had it running with the market fine, just got a can't write a log error in recovery if my cache was full. Recovery still worked fine manually but wouldn't do the auto backups from rom manager etc etc....

CM9.... What did I do???

I have a question for some of you. I had been doing some research on CM9 for NC. I found a download, ( Though not on this site) along with some additional help from this website.
I installed everything to my NC and low and behold, it all works!! It looks just like my Toshiba Thrive tablet, except it's showing that its running Android 4.0 version.
Now for the drawbacks.... it has NO sound, NO Market, etc... Is there any way to install those? Or has this been the problem all along??
Thanks!
What links you got the CM9 from?
I got CM9 running with sound and market is working just fine.
I knew better than to trust another site, but ... I went to androidfamily.net. It had a "how to" to install CM9 ...
Could you give me downloads you used?
Thanks alot!!!
Check out the Samiam nightly builds in the development forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444943
You basically need to flash three files that are available from there. Latest nightly main CM9 ROM, Google Apps (Gapps) and the telephony-permissions fix.
That will give you market, working sound and best CM9 for Nook at the moment.

I see the Gapps file, and the telephony-permissions fix file, but where is the CM9 main file you mentioned? Am I overlooking it?
I tried again, using the same CM9 file, and then installed the Gapps file you mentioned along with the telephony permissions fix. Still no market. Everything else worked fine!

Are you connected to wifi? When loading a new rom, sometimes the market doesn't show up until hooked up to wife.
If this doesn't solve your problem, then I would start from scratch. Can you boot into CM recovery? If so, go into mounts and storage and format data, system and cache. Back into main screen and factory reset and wipe cache partition. (so many debates on if this is all totally necessary, but I have had glitches with installs when I have not done every one of these steps in this order).
Install CM9 (I do recommend samiam's build. It works flawlessly on my nook.)
Choose reboot option in recovery. Connect to a wireless network.
Samiam has included Rom Manager in his build. I use this to boot into recovery. Install Sam's gapps, telephony fix and boot animation fix. Reboot.
Hope this helps. Post if you need more detailed instructions.
I don't think you are flashing the right ones or are missing one of the 3. There is a patch that fixes market, boot animation and SOD issues. In unofficial cm9 forum.

I am getting a little confused. When I clicked on the CM9 build....it shows parent directory and then all the nightlies. Which one do I use? I also tried to just wipe it and reinstall CM7... I did manage to get the market running the CM7. So, I think I must have just downloaded the wrong nightly??

Is there anyone out there with the same type problem that corrected it?
Thanks!
From Recovery you want to format cache and system (under mounts). Also format data unless you already have a good working set up and you want to preserve all your settings, apps etc.
Then you should be flashing 3 zips in this order
update-encore-2012xxxx.zip where xxxx is the latest
gapps-ics-4.0.3-sam-noinit.zip from the misc folder
telephony-permission-fix.zip from the misc folder
The gapps zip in particular has the google apps including the market. Note that if you are comparing with the CM7 MiRaGe ROM then that has the gapps in including the market already in whereas with CM9 you have to flash them in separately.
If you have formatted data then when you reboot it should take you straight into a setup where you set up wifi, then sign in to your google account. The market app then should work OK.

Went to CWM and did the above ..went to mounts and storage..format cache and system, and data. After I did this, I hit the power button, once to go back to the screen to install the zips. Now, when I hit that power button, the following message came up 4 times... E: can't mount/cache/recovery.log. Could this have something to do with it??
I tried your instructions again, and No Market. You said that it would take me to a screen to set up wi fi ..but it doesn't. My screen is black, with a clock, a picture of a camera, and box that says gallery.
I am just going to have to go back to CM7!
I think I finally thought it out. For whatever reason when I put the gapp file in my NC it shows installing..but I don't think it worked. CM7...No problems! Have installed twice today and both times had the Market.
CM9... runs great...but no market!
Strange. The only thing that I can think of at the moment is that you have a bad download of the gapps file.
If you haven't tried it before then I'd suggest downloading it again. You should then just be able to flash that one on its own.
---------- Post added at 05:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:34 PM ----------
As a double check the zip should be 16,874,937 and you should be able to open it on PC and see the apps files in the system/app folder with vending.apk

I checked, and BTW I'm using gapps-ics-4.0.3 -sam noinit ......my download is 18,275 KB ? and when I clicked on it to check the apps files as you suggested this is what it showed... 3 folder icons with MACOSX, META-INF, system. And then directly underneath the folders were 3 other things with the same words as the top 3 ... NO vending.apk ?? I clicked on the one that had system, and all the apps are there. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Would you tell me which gapp file your using?
Thanks for helping me!!!
I go the Gapps I use from the link
http://sphsolutions.net/android/Encore/Nightlies/Misc/
However, it looks like I got a slightly earlier one (probably 1 day before). I retrieved the current one to compare them. The later one has the YouTube app in which explains the difference in size. All the Google apps are exactly the same as in the one I use and the Vending app is there as well under system/app
If you can't see that folder then there is something wrong with your zip download.
The other difference from the earlier one I had is that it looks like the later one had been put together on a Mac system as it has the extra __MACOSX folder and a few .DS_Store folders which are not really part of the required zip but should be harmless.
Just to check I just tried installing with the latest nightly 20120128 and the later gapps version and I got the market OK.
So two thoughts: either your download is still bad or maybe you have signature verification turned on in your clockwork and that is causing this gapps install to fail whereas the main ROM is passing and also the gapps when you do CM7. I have signature verification disabled (which I think is the default). Try toggling the signature verification menu item and get it set to disabled.
What and where is the signature verification? And..... how do I get there?

It is not a file to flash, his terminology is a little off. He means going to CWM and the advanced menu and choose 'fix permissions'.

I tried 'fix permissions' but no success. I am trying to install widely used apps from travel sites like Orbitz and Travelocity which are installed on my samsung 7+ tab running ICS. It must have something to do with stock as they were installed on CM 10 on nook hd+. While I prefer stock due to the excellent sleep option and battery life, I may have to go back to CM 10.

It probably is a terminology issue, but what I did was:
1. Create the image with a micro sd.
2. Drap the Rev3 zip to the sd
3. Shut off the Nook
4. Insert the sd into the Nook and then turned it on
5. Went to the option to flash via the sd card with volume and pressed home key
6. Chose the Rev3 zip and pressed home. The files installed,
7. Removed the sd
8. Restarted..... Hung on the Nook screen for ten minutes, so held power to turn off
9. Restarted
10. Was able to side load all of my apps that needed it after that. I started with Adobe Flash which works GREAT with Dolphin, Opera and Xscope (had to side load Xscope, since could not install via market).
I do not recall flagging permissions in the image menu. I thought the flash process did all that, which it apparently did for me.
Side loaded Flash, Oid emulators, aFBA, Xscope and some market games as well that could be saved with an unrooted back-up app.

His terminology was mixed up. He did not mean "fix permissions" either. He meant flashing the Extras zip, which enables unknown sources, not "flash permissions". But you had already done that.
So I don't know how to fix your problem.

Yep, to me getting unknown sources working is a permission, but wrong in the true Android terminology.
Regardless, being able to install by side loading and the 2.1 update make this one of the best tablets. Actually, it seems a direct equal to the Excite 7.7 which IMO is the best current overall tablet. Better in some regards. The display and power efficiency in sleep mode is a big part of the departuresweight for the HD+.
Thanks, All is Well !

Leapinlar- you have been wonderful with your work on this tablet . Your note made me realize that may be there is something wrong with the apk files I had copied from my other tablet. Hello, I followed your tutorial to the exact letter and all I got was my nook restarting several times before finally wiping itself and having to do the whole set up process again. I formatted the card and set the card to active like instructed. But which rar do I need? I am running the nook hd with 2.1.0. Software. I tried all the nook hd bootfiles rars listed and added the zip I wanted to install and it keeps rebooting and wiping.

You need the one that says NookHD, CWM and BOOTFILES and ends in rar. You must extract the 5 files there to the SD. Be sure to copy the one named MLO first.

Ok thanks. I think I tired that one. But I will give it another go.

Noob mistake. desperate for help

Ok, so I installed Droidsail to try and move my large games to SD card on my S4 to free up some space.
It didnt work, so I uninstalled it. before I uninstalled it I had changed a setting to 'install new apps on SD card'
Now I'm getting an error: Insufficient Storage Available whenever I try to update or install an app.
This includes trying to re-install Droidsail to fix the setting.
I also tried to install Rom Toolbox, and I successfully installed that!
But superuser is out of date so I cant use it to change the setting
Cant update superuser... see error above.
So does anyone know a way to install an app completely manually? Not involving clicking 'install' at all? or another fix?
Can you flash to stock?

Go to the development section and use the search function to find the stock factory ROM and directions to install it. I also suggest you take a lot more time to learn about Android (and the S4 in general) before you do anything else. Good luck.

I could be an idiot, but it appears that there is no stock rom yet for AT&T s4?

Not involving clicking 'install' at all? or another fix?

i believe you need to open up a file manager, and delete the odex file of the file you are looking for in root/data/app

8 minutes between my suggestion of going to the development section and searching you replying you couldn't find it isn't a very good attempt.
However, you need to restore your phone to the original factory firmware that is supplied by Samsung for the AT&T S4 (i337). There most definitely is a complete thread about this in the Development section. Take a little time and you might find it. I'm not trying to be mean, but if you are not willing to take a little time to look for information and learn about your phone you are only going to screw it up worse.
I doubt you are an idiot (as you stated you might be), I just think you need to learn a little about how these phones work before you end up with a really expensive brick. Good luck.
Try Kies (just as bad an app as iTunes lol)

Can't just do a factory reset in recovery mode?

Yep I would just try this if you can't do ADB or anything like that. Or just go to settings > Accounts > Reset.

Anyone have any idea as to why, I cant install any APK's in OmniRom ? - I dont have GApps installed, if that any help. (GApps keeps failing to install).
First thing is to check Settings->Security->Unknow sources.

Well, I have the DEB nightly of 2-19-14 of OmniRom
I have unknown sources checked
But when I try to install the Google Voice apk, I get the message : Cant open file.
Also, would you like the error message for GApps as well. or do you just want the apk troubles ?

I don't see any DEB nightly on Omnilog. Only FLO version is available.
Are you running an unofficial version?
Its an official build right from the OmniRom website.
Heres the link to the DEB...

1) How did you get the apk on your phone?
2) What file manager are u using to install the apk?
I downloaded it directly to the tablet. & I went into the Downloads folder & just taped on it to install. Then I also copied it over to the tablet under OSX. after deleting it off the tablet the first time.

Again, which file manager are you using to navigate to your download folder and install the apk?
There is no file Manager on the system. Nor do I have GApps installed. And when I try to install any thing, it wont install. & since I dont have the Play store, I cant go through that to download/install any thing either… What a mess
- Btw. Thanks for taking an interest & trying to help me with this.
Your issue maybe that you don't have gapps installed and it's missing the installer files to install the apk

Does 'adb install' from a PC work?
Many of the gapps APKs are required to be in /system so they can't be installed via 'adb install' or any other method. Maybe the APK you're trying to install has a dependency on gapps.
Google apps, as well as apps that rely on the APIs they expose (mapping is common) are a tightly intertwined mess. You'll get seemingly silent install errors because you're missing libraries, for example. Trying to restore apps through Titanium Backup will similarly fail if they are missing required libraries.
They generally will show up though logcat if you look carefully. Resolving the issue requires the sufficiently complete and self-consistent (sub-) set of Gapps.

Yeah. What a lot of people don't realize is how many apps that are out there which aren't part of gapps, but require the presence of the core gapps components.

I also install Omni rom and CM11 rom on my old lg optimus one. But I can't install GApps because there is not enought space in the system partition.
