I have my non rooted n7 and i have my rooted desire. I originally wanted to keep this stock and to enjoy its beauty out of the box.
However, i really want the tablet home screen, not the tablet status bar, softkeys or the phone ui in landscape. Just the type of launcher(home screen and app drawer) you get on other tablets. Now I really want to root to get a custom rom that does this but along with that comes some cons.
First is I want the ota's as this will be the first to get them as it is googles stock.
Second, I want Google wallet when it comes out in the UK on an ota, but Google warn users that rooting adds risk to gwallet which sounds bad. However I will get it earlier if i root, so I'm in a muddle ATM.
Lastly is if I do install a custom rom, it may have bugs cause the nexus just came out, can somebody maybe recommend a stable rom that suits my choice of a tablet launcher and a high benchmark rank. Do some apps and games fail to run on custom ROMs?

Doesn't sound like you need to root, sounds like you just need a new launcher. Try Nova Launcher or Apex Launcher. OK, granted, you can't really do anything about the notification/status bar without going to a different ROM but maybe just give another launcher a try and see what you think. If that doesn't do it for you then maybe consider rooting and going with a mod that gives you a different status bar.
Originally, I said I don't want to change the soft keys and status bar plus I've tried Nova, but that's just the landscape phone ui and apex is bugged.

I admit, I'm confused. How does a tablet home screen differ from a phone home screen?

There is no left search bar in the tablet launcher, instead it is in the top left. Niether is there a dock, the app drawer shortcut is in the top right.

If those things are important to you then, yes, you'll probably have to root and install a new ROM but I don't know of any that'll address your needs, sorry. Guess I should've kept my mouth shut in the first place
Btw, do you want to use a tablet launcher in portrait or landscape? Honestly, I rarely use my Nexus 7 in landscape.
The dock is an option on all the launchers I've used. I've turned it off in each one. And I open my app drawer with an upward gesture on Nova and Apex. And I've turned off the search bar ... or I just don't notice it.

I have it, it is very nice, not too many features yet, and it has a very noticeable lag time. Otherwise it looks great and has good ideas, just not implemented to the top standards yet.

I haven't noticed any lag with it And I agree it looks great and has great ideas, but it's just lacking in features. The way I use my phone tho, the missing features don't bother me.
It's a launcher developed by Chris Lacy. He does good work. I use his twitter app, tweet lanes. It's one of the better twitter clients imho. He's very responsive to user feedback. This launcher is in its infancy so it'll get better

$4 is the going rate. It's the same price as apex and Nova even when they were brand new. It's very nice because it's actually different than the standard android launchers besides obviously the $10-17 ones.

I'm using it currently. I like it as it's simple but a bit different to what you normally get. Gotta have the apps list transparent as well as the homescreen bar.

I'm using this one since today on my Xperia Play ( My N4 hasn't arrived yet.. Germany - 'preordered' ****up )
And it runs smoothly even on this old device.
What stopped me from using it is the app drawer in the top left. It'd be a nuisance for me to reach all the way up there every time I needed to access the drawer o_0

Nova and Apex are free, there are paid versions which you can unlock certain features. Completely different to Action Launcher which doesn't offer a free/trial version.
At least with Nova/Apex you can see how it runs on your device over a day or two compared to Action Launcher which you basically have 15 minutes to trial it and if you don't like it you only have 15 minutes to request a refund.

I was concerned about this too - I think you can open the app drawer with the home button, but some apps you want will still be at the top of the list. Infact, if you use the A-Z most will be at the top.
Does anyone know if there is a way around this (e.g, when you press the letter they are offset from the top by a couple of apps)?
I will certainly keep an eye on this, I was quite impressed with the frequent updates for tweetlanes.
The app drawer isn't really on the top left, you can press the home button and it will open, and you can also just swipe right when you are on your "left most" home screen.
I use this on my Nexus 7, and I think its great, good to see something different and not horrifically overpriced!
For me, all it needs is a landscape option, I wouldn't really use landscape on my N4, but I would use it quite a bit on my N7!

I thought I saw one for the N4 a while ago but now I can't find it. I've searched the forum and Google and I come up blank for the N4. Does anybody know if one has been created and, if so, can you point me to it? That is the only reason I've been flashing ROMs but I went back to stock today and I already miss the extended power menu.

Yeah, I obviously wasn't thinking last night. I blame it on my newborn and the lack of sleep.
OMG I was shocked to see the Note 3, just like the Note 2, only has a 4x5 grid on the homescreen. What I don't understand is how Samsung can develop a device with a huge screen, and then totally forget that they can make use of the extra room to place more icons. Even the original Note had 5 columns in the home screen by default (I owned the original Note, the Note 2 and now the Note 3).
I wanted to fix this using something like Assassin tools just like I did when I got my Note 2 a few months ago. Then I read about the Knox warranty void 0x1 on the Note 3. I don't want to void my warranty, although I find it completely rediculous that a user can loose warranty cause he wants to install another (modified) operating system to his device. Suppose Microsoft forbid me to install Linux on my PC!
But okay, we have to deal with it and we probably can't fix this problem (making Samsung change it's strategy) easily. So now it's becoming a challange to solve the wish for a more customizable home screen. How can we do that without root? Yes you could use a custom launcher, but I really like the Touchwiz launcher and it's widgets. Does anybody have ideas how to create a customizable grid on the Touchwiz homescreen to place icons and widgets, without the need to get the phone rooted?
Also: why can't we set the dpi per app? Same goes here, we have such nice devices with big screens, I'd love to have control over the per app dpi in Touchwiz! Is that possible without root? Anybody have a solution for that?
Or do I have to issue a ticket to the Samsung development team and clearify my wishes? And if so, will they listen?
I don't understand how you could be shocked by it, You must of already known this before buying the phone? the Samsung launcher had always been the same just like the xperia launcher etc
As for customising it if you don't want to root your phone right now when it is possible, im afraid you will have to wait it out. Try some other launchers at the moment besides I'm pretty sure most of the widgets work on different launchers

Ok I was not shocked in that kind of way (I love the Note series enough to keep buying each increment), but I can imagine that I'm not the only user with such a big screen who wished there was more room to place icons and use apps optimized for big screens. So the shock is that apparentely I am the only one complaining about this, or Samsung doesn't listen....

Fair enough that's just the Samsung launcher though, it's not the "Note3 launcher" I suggest installing nova launcher or apex and replicating the touchwiz look with themes or icon packs for now, just be patient it was only released a few days a go ^^

So: lets keep both (and more) threads (of this kind) up!

Samsung just says "if you want more options, install another launcher. We're not stopping you."
That's the point of Android. Don't like it, change it.
I got rid of the Stock launcher within the first 30 minutes of purchasing my first Android phone (S3.) Haven't left Apex Pro since.

Hello everyone!
I just updated my Nexus 4 to Android 4.4, but it seems there has changed as good as nothing. (I was running Nova Launcher when I was updating, if that is relevant).
I don't find any of the new functions of the new android version: normally you can just swipe from the left to acces google now, but not on my Nexus. Everything seems to be just like android 4.3: the appdrawer, the homescreens, ... There are only a few things that have actually changed: the icons, the settings menu and the lockscreen.
I thought the problem could have been that I was running Nova Launcher while installing the update.
Does someone know what I can do to have the full Kitkat experience? I've already deleted Nova Launcher by now and the stock Launcher is set as default.
Could a clean install help me out?
PS: I can post some screenshots later if my explanation here isn't clear.
Thanks in advance!
Are you sure you updated? And are you sure you set Google search as your launcher in the launcher settings?
Sent from my N4, wanna know what I am doing? Check http://team-fun.eu
Search for and install Googlehome.apk
Nexus 4 KitKat update is different from Nexus 5. For example 4 is missing the new Google Experience launcher, transparent lockscreen. For GEL just install Google Home. For full transparent lockscreen flash this fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2527525.
Also if you like Nova launcher, join Nova launcher beta group on Google+ and became a tester. Nova beta supports transparent bars (you need enable it in settings).

Forget search it's lately almost always at the top of general (excluding sticky threads). If you can find how to post a new thread I'm sure you can find a highly active thread in general.

It's just that the constant “use the search” type of replies are about as effective as the war on drugs. You can take a dealer or user off the streets, but that will not do anything to actually impact the level of drug use or distribution. Likewise, there will always be people who don't use the search, so why not just ignore them so the thread dies, or actually offer a helpful response.
I'm more in the right. But that's probably because I'm awesome.
