Backup, Root and Restore? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm about to root, using the Nexus Root Toolkit, and would like to avoid completely having to rebuild everything since I've already done a lot of customization and installation of apps. Something I'm not clear on -- can I backup what I've got now and restore it after the rooting process? Or do I need to do it all manually? Can I backup and restore my app settings?
I'm also not clear on the implications of the two checkboxes in the Nexus Root Toolkit Backup dialog, though if it can't be used, I suppose it's irrelevant. But if it can be used...
Anything any of you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Do the app backup, both options checked, works like a charm. If you want to test, make a backup, delete an app and restore. The app will have the same data and it will be just like before!

There for me again, Stevenator 21. Thanks so much. Time to have at it.

Titanium Backup

I recently just rooted and I'm ready to flash my first ROM, but if, rather not lose all my apps. With titanium backup will I have to back up my apps, individually or is there somewhere I can do that at?
Thanks again

You can run a batch with options to backup just user data, apps, system data or all of the above or each program by itself.

I've installed the titanium backup app and noticed that is boots itself with the phone. After killing it, the app eventually re-opens itself! Is this normal, is there a way to prevent this from happening? Or would it be best to uninstall it and simply reinstall it whenever I need to use it?

Are you talking about clockwork recovery?
No, I mean titanium backup. I wasn't able to see that it was running using advanced task killer, but I could see that it was running using android assistant (it seems to show more processes). I've just assume uninstall it until I need it. I don't see any reason to have it running int he background constantly consuming ram when it is not needed.
I have the regular version of Titanium Backup, and after I install the new ROM and want to reload my apps, I click on batch and click the apps i want to restore, but it asks me to install on each app. Does the pro version bypass this?
No i don't think it does bypass it... with the pro version the big thing you're able to do is freeze apps....

Flashing a rom - saving everything.....

Ok so I'm planning on flashing a rom for the first time. I was just wondering if after running a full backup using Titatnium, if that saves all of the texts messages that I have right now? If it doesn't, is there a way to go about getting that done?
If you want to save your text messages, I recommend using mybackup pro (the free version will not let you restore data). If you can't pay for it, look up Applanet

First off, Jmoney47, please do not recommend that another user on here use Applanet. Warez and the like are not supported by XDA. Apps such as applanet are the reason there are virus' and malware on Android devices. If you truly want a paid app, then pay for it off of the market and support the developer who made it. =)
As for the original question:
I believe Titanium will save all of your data (sms and what not). i just switched ROMs and used titanium (among other things). so i'm so used to the switching process, I really can't recall all I do.
I recommend searching for SMS backup which is a free app
My Backup Root is free and backs up text. I couldn't figure out how to back up text using Titanium.

Also, Titanium Backup only backs up apps. Don't try to back up system data with it because it differs from ROM to ROM and can have serious consequences if you restore it with an incompatible one.
If you want a full backup, one you can restore after flashing a new ROM if something goes wrong, you need to make a nandroid backup using Clockwork Recovery.

Well I got everything I need to backup taken care of, but now I'm having a problem flashing the rom. I select the rom in rom manager, check to make a backup, and to wipe the data, hit ok, but then it just restarts my phone and nothing has happened. Any ideas?

I don't use rom manager, instead I use koush's droid X bootstrap. Which might be a dependancy for rom manager.
On a side note. I'm baffled by the fact that someone would come in a developers forum and recommend pirated software. Sad.

[Q] titainium backup

Does Titanium backup work without root?
Thanks
No but it is very easy to root if on froyo; if on GB it has a few more steps involving an SBF but it is still a very simple process.
And really, if you're on xda, you know you want to root.

I would think Android should allow backups without the need to hack/ root the phone.

They do, with apps like my backup and other stuff, but none of those work well because, you guessed it, root level access is needed to preserve system and some data...

When I had my Windows Mobile 6 phone, I could do a nandroid-type backup (system + user data) using a program called Sprite. Each snapshot was around 50MB for me. And 1-click restore to that backed up state.
No need to hack/root the phone.
I guess the Android equivalent would be to root and use Titanium?

You are correct. If you want to back up your entire phone you can root install Droid 2 bootstrap and rom manager and just click backup current rom then your entire phone will be backup up. Including setting, messages, all apps, everything.

Always keep a good titanium backup, but if you are rooted, use cwm to create a backup image.

On titanium did you select backup all user app or backup all user apps and system data. I believe user app backup just remembers the fact that you have that app and system data should be the information gathered from such things as games?

Really? I didn't know that. I thought system data was just for system apps (ROM + Gapps, non PlayStore downloaded)
Next time I'll try backing up the system data too, I hope that will work
Can anyone confirm Deadspace's game data is part of system because my Bad Piggies data restored just fine without backing up system apps...

[Q] Upgrading from 2013 to 2013 model. Searched but no luck.

Can I backup my 2012 N7 and restore it to my 2013?
The 2012 is rooted and unlocked on 4.3.
If so when I boot it up should I tell it to load everything from google play restore, skip it, where to start.
Thanks!
If you're talking about a NANDROID, you can't.

You can back up your apps and system data (wifi, sms etc) with Titanium or ROM Toolbox, and restore it to the new tablet.
Be aware that restoring app data to another ROM may be problematic for some apps, so be ready to erase app data for apps that misbehave (no notifications, force closes etc.).
Don't ever restore system data to a device that is not the same model and does not have the same ROM. Only restore your apps and app data.

So an adb backup would be fine then.

If you are rooted, you can use titanium backup to save all of your apps and data. Save the titanium backup folder on your SD to your computer then do whatever you need to do. After that, put the folder where it needs to go and use TB to restore them.
ADB is fine as long as you do not restore any system apps or data.

First of all, thanks to all for the quick help! I am leaving on vacation in a day and kinda wanted to get this going
So in Titanium I would do a full backup with option 1 it looks like "Backup all user apps" since I don't want any system data.
Pushing it to a USB drive now. No SD on a Nexus 7 sadly.
Exactly. Then save the titanium backup folder that your backups get saved to, to a safe place off of the device
