Disabling nag screen in RTM - Windows 8 General

Is there any way to disable the activation nag screen?
I'm not really interested in cracking it because I plan on buying it and using that key whenever it becomes available so I don't want to mess with that. I just want to make the nag screen go away temporarily (if it's possible)

If I were to use one of these keys floating around, would I have any issues later when I buy a copy of Win 8 and use that key? Will I need to reinstall?

You can change the key later on i cant remember off my head the command but you can do it in command line. i would be carefull still with a non legit key as they may close your accounts etc. Its not that high a risk but worth noteing.

cmd > slmgr -ipk KEY

I would highly avoid using keys that are "floating around". The OS is tied pretty heavy into your Mcrosoft/Xbox-Live account and can get you a nice ban for it.
I would wait and just deal with the nag screen.
Better safe than sorry.

is there a quick way to password protect your ppc?

Hello,
Is there a shortcut or a link I can click on the ppc to make to password protect it?
I have it where it will turn on after 90 minutes, but not everytime. and I'd like a way to just click on a link, and the password thing is protected.
Any ideas or suggestions?
if you set it to 0 minutes it will lock when the ppc goes to suspend mode; the downside of course is you have to unlock everytime you power back on.
I'm also interested in something that enables the password screen via software/button. I use the 0 minutes rule but you have to suspend the device which breaks any activesync connection and the whole process starts again when you power on. A simple little app that enables the password screen the same as at power on would be great.
Maybe TranCreative Nice Start would help
you may want to take a look at psshutxp also http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/psshutxp.shtml
Thanks guys, but neither is what I'm looking for. I don't want a third party security product and I don't want anything that shuts the device down, just a tiny app. that triggers the in-built password screen so I can assign it to a button or icon.
Ah well, have to keep looking.
I use Omega 1-pass, its a great password app (currently the best one for magician I think)
Also, it wont cost you a cent if you search around for the crackz.

I was trying to help others also by the way.. (not just you)
Anyways, the built-in password in PPC is terrible.. buttons are too small and basically its too basic. Why dont you want a third party app? A "tiny app" is a third party app (LOL)
Give 1-Pass ago.. believe me its one of the app that you'll sacrifice some space for it (around 500KB or less I think). Perfect sized buttons, no excess features etc..
If you do try it.. let others know how you get on.
If you afraid/alergic to use 3rd party software just X-backup first your ppc, install the software >> not satisfied >> restore to get the same setting/database
1-PASS IS A WONDER
hi all,
i am using 1-pass and the software is in fact wonderful... lets u assign a hardware button for password access and moreover allows flexibility!
and for the problem with which the topic was started /.... just set the time when u want 1-pass activated when the device is not used and ur work is done!

I'm not "afraid/alergic" to use third-party products - I have over 90 applications & games installed, ALL legit. by the way, no cracks - I review the stuff as well as use it.
I simply don't want/need anything more than the basic PIN mechanism which the device already provides. Besides which, I wish it to be something my wife (a technophobic!) can use easily, hence the PIN approach.
I've looked at many security packages and either dislike the way they work or find them to be complete overkill. I'm not looking to bullet proof the device just provide simple privacy protection when it's on the desk, hence I just want a basic trigger mechanism for the in-built password screen, nothing more.
BTW I find the 1-pass claim of...
In tests, entering a 4 digit password using the standard password program took 7 seconds.

You realise that, by posting bootleg software like this, you are risking the actual owners of this commercial software taking action against the site? You might want to consider removing it for the sake of the other site users.
@mtbsoft back on topic (well hopefully): I was using a set of shortcuts that would automatically send you to the Settings Menu used the Bluetooth one. Anyway when I tapped it, I went straight to the Bluetooth App. Maybe there is one for the Password Application, found it over at brighthand... here is the link for the thread. http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79526
also am not sure but when I used to use OmegaOne's BattpackPro I remember that it had a 'key' icon/link (in Program Bar) maybe this would lock the device as well so? if you have it on your device maybe you can check this feature.
anyway, still thinking of other ways to lock the device without power off (and hopefully additional apps) also...

Hi mate,
Thanks for the thread, I'll take a look and see if there's anything there of use to me. I have found a crude sort-of way to give some protection - the screensaver from PHM Tools. When you run it, it simply powers off the screen and doesn't come back on until you press the action button (nav-pad centre), so the device appears to be turned off. If someone then tries to turn it on with the power button it actually turns off and engages the lock!
The disadvantage is that other buttons are actually still enabled and functional when the screen is off so someone could trigger applications or even make a call with two phone button presses, but it's a start. Thanks again for the helpful reply.

All of which I use and need (excluding the games), including many of the features of PHM. I don't want and don't need a third party security product. All was looking for was a tiny little exe which wraps up the single API call (probably) to a DLL which triggers the password lock screen - I don't even want it to be memory resident.

Memory is a consideration because of the number of applications which have to be installed in Main Memory as opposed to SD. Why should I waste memory for something which is essentially built-in?

Take 1-pass - it claims...
Password program you will actually use! - I use the built in!
Fastest ever password entry using innovative hard key password feature - don't need.
Shows essential information - so does the basic "my info" screen
Automatically locks when left unattended - don't want, would find it more annoying
Lock your device on demand - woohoo!
Keylock - just like on your mobile phone - don't need, if the password is engaged!
2 types of password entry - don't want
Use your own picture in the background - don't want
Ideal for corporate deployment - irrelevant for an individual
Supports landscape (320x240) - not on my device since it doesn't
So you see, I'm not knocking the product (even though some of the claims on the website are laughable, misleading or just plain wrong), it simply isn't what I want, it's full of features that I don't want or need and I wouldn't waste USD$20 buying all that for just the one feature I'm interested in. I also dislike the way some of its features require you to buy other products too.
The same applies to most of the products I've looked at - they're all crammed full of stuff that is totally useless to me.

there is an App on the Market called "Screen Tools" which has this function.
It allows you to use your camera button to "disable" the touchscreen. Not sure if this app will work on our Acer tablets, as we have no camera button - but it may be worth a 99cent gamble.
Also, from I have seen with the Netflix app - it does not keep playing in the background or pause when another app takes focus - it just stops the video and dumps you back to the selection screen. Not sure if this is going to be possible
I wonder if this would be better in the development section it would be nice to assign the rotation lock to a screen hold/lock

This is not a topic for the development section, perhaps in Android General or Android Software and Hacking, as I see this being an application (especially since there is no source available for HC to be modified in such a way as you are hoping, meaning for a ROM developer to make this happen would be kind of far-fetched right now). Certainly it would require root, and most likely it would work as launcher replacement, perhaps requiring a specific gesture to be drawn to unlock the screen. This is a neat idea, not sure if the sdk allows this type of control from a launcher replacement, but perhaps Anderwebs (the developer of ADW) or another launcher master would know if this is possible. They would also be the most likely to implement this type of feature. Perhaps ask a moderator to move this into the Android Software Development and Hacking forum?
Unless you want to completely limit your options be requiring this to use the rotation lock switch, which would make this a device specific request, severely limiting the number of developers (application and os level) who would be able to assist you. I would approach it from a more generic state, make it applicable to all Android devices, and that way I could get more people interested in it and make it happen.
But, don't just go and start a whole bunch of threads, ask a mod to move this thread, change the title of your post to something like : App/Feature Request - Baby Proof (On-Demand Input Locking). That might work. I would stick with gesture based, and make it require a multi-touch gesture, obviously you would make something that your child could not easily imitate as your gesture, to unlock it, there should be an easy way to enter lock mode as well...
just my 2 cents
Just go buy app locker... it will lock everything or specific apps

There's an app I use for the same reason, but I don't give the tablet to my youngest in fear of it becoming a Frisbee or drowned in saliva. But my toddlers listen to direction, so this app works.
The FREE app is called "Show Screen Lock." But, because the "Home and Back" button are the means to unlock, if your child hits one of those, it will be unlocked.
Anyway, good luck!
I wish long pressing the volume up button locks and unlocks the screen.
edit:
Nevermind, I overlooked that you wanted to use this while playing media. This app freezes images, so no video plays at the moment. I've emailed the developer a while ago and he said he's working on one specifically for tablets.
Samsung's Touchwiz has this function. If you are playing video you can hit the power/lock button and it will lock it from screen or button presses until you hit the lock button again.
I dont know if there would be a way to extract that part of the UI to move over without porting everything.
I use it all the time with galaxy s phones so my kids can watch shows.
.....
There is also an app called "Kid Zone" by zoodles. It is nice, and free, and can be upgraded to premium. I use it on my phones and tablet and the kids love it. They can draw and do games and learn and I get emails about what they did and uploads in the email of their drawings. The cool thing is you can lock everything so that the only way to exit the app is to draw a "Z"
Its a nice app, and thinking about upgrading to premium with it here soon.
------
I used to use toddler lock, but as HC doesnt really have full screen while hiding the buttons the toddler lock doesnt work as well, but still temporarily fun.
Edit: I have recently been trying out HoneyBar for HC Tablets. It hides the bar at the bottom of rooted tablet. Works pretty well, and so far one of the best options I know of.

[Q] Convert Hero to dumbphone

Hi. Here's the deal...my elderly parents are travelling this winter in another country. International roaming is expensive, as is international travel, and we're looking for as many ways as we can to save money. One of the ways we've considered to deal with both of these problems is to buy a sim card where they are at, rather than bringing their phone from home and paying outrageous international roaming charges. This is where Hero comes in...I have an unlocked HTC Hero that I could let them use. The problem is, they are intimidated by technology, and having a capable phone with lots of features is overwhelming to them. I was wondering if there's a way I can lock the phone down so it goes to the dialer and nowhere else. No lock screen, no email, no Android market, no text messages sent or received, none of that, just the dialer to make and receive calls. Ideally, I'd like to be able to return it to normal functionality when I get it back, but if this is a one-way thing, that's OK, too. It is currently running Elelinux-7.1-Hero-v3.6-Light.
I apologize profusely if this is a silly question...I'm new at all of this.

It's kind of easy what you want...but not every thing can be erased
1ownload eles ROM
2. Open the archive with WinRar or other app that you use
3. Go to /system/apps and you will find all the app there with the extension .apk
4. Delete what you think that they won't use (but be very careful): for example market.apk (you said that they don't need it)
4. Close the program and you will see that the rom is more lighter
5. Flash the rom
6. Enjoy
For the part with the lock screen i don't think i can help you...
Hope you get work done
Stefan
The lock screen part is really the important part. The other apps can still be installed, just abstracted away from my parent's eyes, if they're locked into the dialer. I guess I wasn't clear enough when I described what I was looking for. I want to make it so that the dialer program is the only program accessible to the user...when they press the home button, I want it to go to the dialer rather than to a launcher. When the screen goes off due to inactivity, I want it to go to the dialer right away when any button is pressed rather than showing a lock screen. On iPhone (sorry, it's a platform I'm more familiar with), there's a jailbreak app called IncarcerApp that can do this...is there anything similar for Hero?
Lockscreen
Hi there! If you want to get rid of the lock screen what you can do is go into settings on the phone then Cyanogen mod settings then tablet tweaks and in there, there is a tick box or similar that you can press to disable the lock screen!
Hope that Helped
Thanks for the tip, PP337, but that's still not what I am looking for. I did some Googling last night, and I found a lot of developers refer to what I am looking for as 'Kiosk Mode'. Unfortunately, everything I found on that is in the context of creating a new app, rather than using an existing one.
I'm obviously not making myself clear enough, but I'm not sure how I can phrase it more clearly. I really hope we won't have to go buy a junky SIMlocked Nokia phone that we'll have to throw out in three months when they come home.
i can't understand one think....why is it so hard to unlock a phone??? especially when it's so simple...
Stefan
Unlocking a phone is indeed simple, for you and I. But for an elderly person, particularly one who is unfamiliar with technology, being confronted with a screen full of app icons can be intimidating. I tried to get my mom to use the Android phone as it is, and she is terrified of breaking something or doing something wrong, to the point where she won't use it for those fears.
I have to say, I hadn't expected it would be this difficult to make this 'open platform' do what I want it to. If it were iPhone, I'd be done by now. Disappointing.
Could you not just remove all the homescreen icons? Can't remember which launcher comes with that ROM, but if you install launcher pro for example, you can remove all the icons even the dock. You can then choose to have just one homescreen and just the dialer icon. Or you could leave it blank to just select the dialer button to make calls. Then disable the lock screen as described above. Would that be ok for them ?

I tried the suggestion someone posted about LauncherPro with only one icon. She accidentally long-pressed an empty space and the menu came up and she didn't know what to do. I was able to tell her what to do because I am here now, but if that had happened when I wasn't around she wouldn't have been able to cope at all, for fear it was dialing some 1-900 number or doing something else she didn't want. I'm shocked that it isn't possible to lock Hero into a single app, but it seems it simply isn't. Thanks anyways for all your help.

Are they traveling alone? That sounds like something you should worry about more then just having a phone for them
You could use adw and lock the desktop by pressing menu and choosing 'lock desktop'. That would prevent any accidental menus popping up. You could also hide the status bar from adw settings and disable the lockscreen from cm tweaks menu. You could also download a dialer widget (https://market.android.com/details?id=dialer.impact) and set that as a widget on a single homescreen and lock the desktop on adw launcher.
Hope that helped

I think the difference here is that if you actually purchase Windows 8 and activate it properly (which happens to be something you can do when you purchase a copy of Windows 8), that you don't need to "hack" the operating system to change the background.
So in this particular scenario, if you can't change the background on a copy of Windows 8 you are running, you either have not legitimately purchased a copy of Windows 8 (which is probably why you can't activate your copy and thus customize your background), or you are using a trial of some sort.
I'm gonna guess (and I think most people will also make this guess) that 95% of people that are looking to hack their copy of Windows 8 to change the background probably haven't gotten their copy through a legal method. Quite similar to people looking to remove the "Evaluation copy" watermark commonly found on unactivated or stolen copies of Windows.
Best way now is buying key

i cant say the how, but they why is because microsoft isnt going to make it easy for you to get the full benefits of their os without paying for it. Even if its something as small as not being able to change the background. Obviously enough people care about that small thing that they might just go out and buy a copy. I doubt they will go out and buy it, but its a nice thought
I could tell you how to unlock the stuff BUT I may get banned for it.
He's not asking how to activate the software, he's not asking how to trick it into thinking it's activated, he's asking how to enable a feature so that he can customize his background because he hasn't purchased a key yet... Maybe he wants to explore all of the features of the OS before purchasing it... Whatever his reason is, there's nothing illegal about enabling desktop personalization on a non-activated copy of Windows 8. Just like there's nothing illegal about enabling the Aero Lite theme on an activated copy of Windows 8. Or any other tweak or hack that we come up with to do something that we're not supposed be able to do.
Anyways, I think the guy who made the stealing software comment was speaking to the person who suggested activation over KMS server, not the guy who posed the question... So, we can stop now.

i would understand if the wallpaper feature was a major feature, but it isnt. Pretty much everyother feature is ready and working in the trial, and chances are if you dont like windows 8 without the wallpaper, your opinion wouldn't change if your able to change it. So if you like windows 8, just buy a key, most people qualify for the cheaper upgrade price anyway, so its not really that expensive. Plus if you actually buy it you dont ever have to worry about your copy becoming non genuine and shutting down, or getting an update that shuts you dont, like the antipiracy update in windows 7

Except that this particular part of this "personalization" feature is completely dependent on the successful purchase and/or activation of Windows 8. Therefore, in order to personalize the background, you do have to trick Windows into thinking that it has been legally purchased and activated.
This is not a uxtheme patch or something, this is a benefit that you get once you activate Windows 8. Any circumvention of that functionality is clearly not an intended function of a non-activated copy of Windows, and therefore anything you do to get around this is probably just as illegal as stealing Windows itself.

thread closed. we don't condone trying to bypass paid function.

Latest 10.1 inch Onn Tablet. Any way to remove Walmart button from the Navbar / remove other Walmart branding?

My dad has purchased a few of the 10.1 inch tablets for other members of our family, and I've been tasked with setting them up.
Is there any way to remove the Walmart branded stuff off of this thing? Especially the Walmart button in the Navbar?
If this were for me, I'd just look to root and installed Lineage OS, but since these are for someone else, I just want to get the stupid Walmart stuff out of there and make things as simple as possible for them.
Happy to provide more information as needed.
Thanks in advance!
Use Link 2SD to freeze the four apps. You can also freeze a WmApps to disable the icon, but I don't know yet if it'll take a hike. Will know after a bit probably. Both of my tablets are acting weird atm.
OK, got it. Disabling WmApps leaves the Walmart icon on the navbar but it locks the tablet instead of showing the four Walmart apps. If you leave WmApps enabled but freeze the four Walmart apps, the icon will bring up a "favorite apps" screen, presumably with whatever apps you want to move to it.
I could use it as instant lock myself.
I was hoping to get rid of the icon, but yeah, I already disabled the other apps. That'll have to do.
Thanks.

Hi, I tried to use Link2SD and it seems to require root to freeze app? I am ok with using the * button for favorite apps.
Thanks!

Anytime!
Yes it does require root, which has caused me some issues itself.
Have a good weekend!

Is there a preferred procedure you can point me to for this? Really appreciate it!
I posted a bloat remover script at https://github.com/ikluft/ikluft-tools/blob/master/scripts/bloat-remover-onntab.sh for use on Linux or other Unix-like systems. You must have ADB, and may (or may not) need root access on your desktop/laptop system to run ADB. It requires developer access to the tablet, but not root. (This doesn't remove the Walmart button because that changed in Android 10/11. I saw others posted examples for Android 9 in other threads.)
I have just purchased a walmart 10.1" Model 100003562. (Pro Tablet)
it has Android 11 software and is got the out of the box software including the walmart apps.
I would like to remove the walmart apps and the spying software for the camera and the microphone. I have not yet allowed it to connect to the WiFi to update or have allowed it to identify a google account.
Is there any hope? I have searched over and over for hours for some kinda of guide on what to do with this tablet and I haven't come up with a rock solid description of what I need to do.
I would be extremely grateful for any help and wouldn't hesitate to donate if I need too. I have a few days left with it before I can return it and get a refund if I accidently brick it or if its just impossible to make "clean"
Thank you much.
I thought I'd share my method to remove the Walmart button for others searching. I had removed some of the bloatware using the GitHub script posted. Put that button was still there. I'm using Nova launcher. But I imagine this should work with the stock launcher. You can just get rid of the navigation bar. Enable gestures in settings. This completely removes the navigation bar. The gestures are working well for me and are intuitive. It looks great and clean.
