Best - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone just throwing this out there. I am a regular on the galaxy note forum but just got a n7. What is the best and quickest rom and kernel combo. At the moment I am running a friends private liquid build and motley kernel. I need more speed out of it. Any suggestions?
from the padded cell tucked away in the dark

what exactly do you need "more speed" for?

Just want to get the best out of such a powerful device

The best ROM and kernel doesn't exist, it varies for different people.

I for a rom, I personally prefer Paranoid Android, you can get Tablet UI.

Stock does the best for me.
Running stock, deodexed, with root. And the tabletUI mod. perfect.
Every rom I've tried was not near as smooth in scrolling, or as quick to open items.

Thanx for the answer guys. I have been around long enough to know there is no such thing as the best and probably should have put in peoples opinion. My bad but all ideas are welcomed coz that's how we learn
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2

I'm using the EOS CM10 build and Trinity Seven kernel. I've tried a ****load of different combos and that combo both feels best, benched best and appears the most stable (with pretty much the only bug being with google play music).

The new team BAMF wrong is sooooo buttery! Running very smooth and stable for me
Ive been using Paul Obriens Jr# ROMs. theyre just tweaked stock ROMs, but I have never had a single issue so far and with every release there are new features without any new bugs. which is always nice.

How much smoother can it be than stock jb? Seems like people are getting placebo effects from custom roms, only benefit I see is removal of bloat, if there is any really.

It ships with stock so run stock for a few weeks to establish a baseline for stability and speed before you go experimenting.
I would wait a couple months. Stock nexus 7 runs great. Just unlock and root it. After a couple months Roms will start to mature and you will also see which ones seem to be leading, me personally, I love to flash. But I, very happy with stock and nova launcher. There are some things I would like from full tablet ui. But every ROM is promising the world. Just waiting to see which ones take the lead.
So just wait for now. no rush, do you hate stock that much?
Edit:
Plus people are having some issues booting into recovery without a USB or adb

Have tried just about all the popular ones out as of yet, favorite so far has to be TeamEOS' nightlies. Very stable, UI works great, launcher rotation, and has the ICS style status bar, which I prefer.

I've been using the Pure AOSP rom, I used the stock for a couple of days and then switched, never looked back. There aren't a lot of differences between stock and the Pure AOSP, but the AOSP rom provides a cleaner starting point and the camera works by default.

I'm currently running stock, I just rooted and unlocked so I'm set whenever the stable full roms start kicking in. No need to rush it, just stick with stock for now

I think you are right about that. Although I flash Roms on my galaxy note, I could not see the need on the nexus 7 because it runs better than any ROM I ever put on the note

I keep trying new ones in hopes that it will somehow get even better, but keep returning to stock.
Nothing is as smooth.
Currently running stock, rooted, deodexed. With the tabletUI mod. Nova launcher. awesome.
I'm running BAMF Paradigm. It's absolutely an amazing blend of custom features that offer visual and performance related options to really make it your tablet, I'm very happy with it, I've run several others also. DEFINITELY recommend Motley's kernel, it's one of the things I love most about the nexus 7. Also Aaronpoweruser's (sp) cookies and cream rom ran really good for me.
Just go for a different kernel rather than ROM, I tried out Trinity today (only got the 7 yesterday) and I find its quite slick..

Hundred percent agree. I have Paranoid Android on there just for the Tablet UI changes. I have found that Kernel Improvements do help drastically.
plain old pure aosp. its clean and fast, with the trinity kernel at least

Help needed: Looking for a rom

Hey All,
I'm looking for a rom and having trouble figuring out which one will best suit my needs. Typically, I would just download a bunch of roms and try them out, but I'm stuck in China with a low data ceiling on a very slow connection for the foreseeable future. I really need to be like 80% sure before I download.
I've been running CleanRom since the summer, and that has been a great experience, but CleanRom is no longer being developed, so I'm no longer up to date.
I want something with integrated tablet mode, and I would like something with a volume slider in the notification tray. Wifi toggle switch would also be ideal (I prefer not to use apps for these features). Aside from those features, I just need the most stable rom possible. Additional customization isn't necessary. In fact, pure stock outside of the features I listed would be great. And I'm obviously not looking for nightly builds. I want something to throw on here and leave on until the next Android update.
Does anyone know a rom that meets this criteria? If you have suggestions, I would love to hear them, and then I'll go read some threads.
I really appreciate the help.

Check CM10 with Tablet UI, it should fit the needs you are looking for.
I have been using it since last 4 days and its been stable. No issues yet.

Check Glazed Jellybean here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1796668
I've been running this rom since 1.1.2 and have been very pleased with it. My current setup is Glazed JB 2.0 with the included Franco kernel, and Nova Launcher Prime for a launcher. I'm also using Pimp My Rom 2.0 for additional tweaks, but from the sounds of it you may not even want that.
Good luck in your search.

You want a solid rom? Team EOS is going to be your best bet. Very minimal isnt loaded with a bunch of crap you wont use. Has its own toggles however are kind of an eyesore IMO. You could just use an app to do the same thing i recommend "Extended Controls" Its a dollar.. but well worth it. LOL reread your OP oops.. :S
Also if you have the pull down.. and swipe in the middle to either the right or the left.. it will swap the Date and clock to a volume slider on the left and a brightness slider on the right .
The only problem I've had with this rom is the oft mentioned error about invalid glazed 2.0 init.. and it's more of a minor nuisance than anything. Functionality does not seem to have a problem, and I'm sure the message has something to do with Glazed being based on a CM nightly.. a bad integer table entry perhaps. Either way, my overall experience has been great with this setup.. buttery fast, and buttery smooth.

Thanks for getting back to me on that. I've got a list of three I'm investigating. Trying out this CM10 kang first.
I've had very good luck with cm10. I've tried a few others but keep coming back to cyanogenmod. It's stable and has the features I want. On my Tablet I have many of them turned off, but it's nice for my phone. I

What is the current best ROM?

I have a new 32gb Nexus 7 to arrive at my house in an hour or two What ROM should I install? I am a set it and forget it user so I will be using this ROM for the foreseeable future. I mostly want to maximize the performance while keeping a stock feel.
Thanks in advance.

Solid aosp rom it's frequently updated and has great support if anything were to go wrong.
you really should try as many different roms as you can. there isnt a "best" rom. every user has different needs and every device will prefer some roms over other. so whats best for someone, might be worst for someone else. thats said, i prefer the rasbean jelly rom

Best romto install coming from stock

rasbeanjelly + franco.Kernel
That's what I prefer anyway
This is incredibly subjective. Just make a backup and give them all a try until you find one you like. When it comes to ROMs, its a case of to each his own.
For what it's worth, I'm using AOKP with Franco's latest kernel. I've tried all the others, but I find myself going back to it.
Yea I know I just figured one might be better or worse for battery or be a little further along on features than some others.
One thing that irritates me is stock keyboard. Does any room also come with better keyboard?

As others have stated, AOKP is great. And yes, it gives you, in my opinion, a more useful keyboard (for example, the top row of letters allows for long-press for numbers). Battery life seems pretty even compared to stock. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

You can easily download a zillion better keyboards from the play store. Don't need a custom rom for that. My favorite is thumb keyboard.
As for roms there are many good ones. I am trying out liquid smooth right now and its good. I also like aokp. Using the ktmanta kernel.

Paranoid is a great rom with Franco R4.

I've tried CM, AOSPA, PAC and finally SlimBean and combined with TabletUI, Xposed framework and Holo launcher the latter one is what I like most!
Eeehhhh. I use PAC-Man. It's not the most stable thing in the world, with it's occasional fast rebooting. But, I have never seen a ROM with as many customization options as this. Throw your favorite CM theme, and your favorite icon pack for Apex or Nova launcher, maybe play around with the transparency levels and colors on your Navbar and status bar, and then... Then you have a thing of beauty right there. I like it, even though it has it's quirks.

I am using the 10.1.0 RC5. I think it's the overhead of all Samsung crap that can be found on the device that makes it move like a slug. (Alas, for me the speed was barely acceptable)
