Crazy CPU spikes with Google play music - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I, trying to use Google play music instead of Apollo as I like the interface better. Anyway when I do my CPU freq goes way up to max setting and the nexus gets hot lags and reboots. With Apollo its like at 200mhts and runs fine. Anyone else get this same issue? I don't understand. I even disabled Apollo but no difference. Thanks in advanced

Nexus 7 music stutter

When I play music on my nexus 7 while multi-tasking, the music stutters. Spurts
Thid problem is unbearable when I use the neutron music app.
It happens not as much on the play music app, but still happens.
The system as a whole also lags considerably when running music with the neutron music app.
I'm running 4.2
Anyone had this problem?

I'm getting the same here... Even with music held locally I.e. not being streamed over WiFi? Another 4.2 issue me thinks...

Anybody knows how to fix it?
Same problem with power amp (pa. 4.2).
Got a nexus 7 that shipped with 4.2 and had the same issue (music suddenly stuttering even without doing anything).
For now I seem to have gooten rid of the issue by doing a "wipe cache partition" in the recovery console (google for it).
The only thing which is left: if some heavy fullscreen animation is playing (i.e. returning to home screen or opening an app) the music _sometimes_ gets a little distorted (< 1 sec) but at least isn't interrupted.

Thanks a lot, that actually works (wipe cache and dalvik in recovery)
Btw it works with bluetooth headphones
It happened to me once or twice so I installed AVG Antivirus and GO Taskmanager then kept cleaning RAM regularly then the glitch got fixed somehow.
Here we go again...
This is driving me nuts...
Using my Nexus 7 the past few days, the music lags/distortions slowly reappeared.
I tried to pay attention when they happen. So far I noticed most of them while:
Opening a new tab in Chrome, switching between apps (fullscreen animation), having heavy disk I/O (i.e. installing/uninstalling apps). But sometimes they just appear out of nowhere, even when not doing anything at all, though.
Here's a collection of things I tried so far to eliminate the issue:
- Cache partition wipe: like mentioned helped at first but soon the issue reappeared.
I also wiped the cache partition again yesterday and the issue actually got worse afterwards this time...
- Keeping RAM clean: tried numerous apps to close unnecessary background apps and free RAM. Seems to reduce the issue a bit.
- Turning off 'click' sounds: in the sound menu there's a toggle for sounds when touching the screen (i.e. clicking on an element within an app). Turning it off actually helped a bit, because the music lags at least won't happen at times when the click sound would be played, anymore. (Which happened often to me before)
- Using Poweramp: this music player app allows you to increase the audio engine's buffer size and process priority. I tried tweaking these settings to no avail. It seemed fine at first but the lags reappeared quickly despite having increased process priority and buffer size. Other third-party players I tried have the same lag issue as well.
I looked around the net and also through the Android bug tracker. Despite of this thread I rarely found any related report so I begin to wonder if other Nexus 7 owners aren't noticing or simply ignoring this issue or if my device is faulty.
I somehow doubt the latter though, because everything else is mostly completely smooth including video playback, Android GUI, scrolling in Chrome etc.
To me it seems more like a multithreading issue (which would be ridiculous having a quad-core processor) or a memory/disk access bottleneck.
I have this issue too, though it's like a 100ms stutter or something quick. I'm using headphones with no issues on desktop or Galaxy Nexus. I've noticed it the most in Netflix and YouTube, but also get it in Google Music and Pandora.
I get it also, even just listening when everything else is idle. It makes me afraid that a device has *more* processing power than my Gnex plays music worse than it. The Gnex is just about flawless with music and multitasking.

A friend of mine is also having this issue on d2vzw (Verizon Galaxy S III) on cm 10.1 and not 10. I will check back here now and then and see if anyone has come up with anything and any updates on his side.

[Q] Youtube HD videos lag terribly with IconiaHD's 4.4.4 ROM

Hello pros of XDA forums!
I recently got a hold of my first Android device, the A500. It came with factory stock Honeycomb v3.0.1. Because the build-in system update no longer work, I flashed it to 4.4.4 OmniRom by IconiaHD from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2705989.
Everything works great except when I watch Youtube 720p videos with the Youtube app, the video would lag very bad. It's not network lag, sound plays fine but the video just freezes then plays for a couple seconds then freezes again. It's the kind of lag you get when hardware is not fast enough or when there's too much software in the background eating up all the CPU cycles. But I checked background app CPU usage with Watchdog Task Manager and no app is hogging resources. I then tried to increase CPU frequency, change CPU governor, IO scheduler, nothing helped. CPU set to performance helped a tiny little bit but overall video still stutters too much.
Anyone else have this problem?
Also under Known Issues of the IconiaHD's thread, it says "-Default sound recorder app is included but the icon does not show up". Does anyone know how to make the app appear so I can use it?

Multitasking bug! Hmmm

Hey Folks,
I have noticed an occasional bug during multitasking situations that renders the Note 4 extremely slow and laggy.
In order to achieve this, you should try to run a full screen game. In my case, I played Beach Buggy Racing.
Then, you need an incoming background process such as an new email or text message - I noticed that this may trigger a disproportionate power usage bug and cause the on-screen app to run extremely slow. Upon using the "Close all apps" function the lag will be cleared and you may resume your previous app.
I have also noticed this in regular app usage, where the phone would spontaneously explode into a fiery ball of fire. Minus the fire.
Anyone know why this might be happening?
Does it only happen with Beach Buggy Racing? I often multitask with games and haven't noticed this bug.

Happens with other apps as well. For example, while browsing 'reddit sync' the phone occasionally freezes up and starts acting like a Moto Razr with extreme lag.
Closing all apps seems to fix this!
Perhaps the processor is throttling due to the heat.

I noticed after playing Candy Crush my phone would get really slow as in the framerate would slow big time. I realized that I had unchecked Force GPU rendering in developer options. I went and checked it again and haven't had the problem since
I was streaming a movie using allshare application onto my tv via chromecast, at the same time I was watching streaming football on my device via another application as well as browsing xda on tapatalk via split window. No apparent lag and device does not get hot. SM910C here.

[GUIDE] No Audio Glitches on CM12 based roms by fosseperme

And after correcting the bug audio of Nexus 5 and lags software of LG G3, I return this time with a bugfix against glitches and metallic sounds on music players in CM 12 roms.
The team cyano did a bad job on the kernel of CM12, since it was discovered that the cause of the glitchs was the non use of hotplugg with two cores always active in standby. Even Franco with his kernel solved the problem with the latest release r37, but the kernel has bad performance compared to stock kernel.
With this short guide you can activate the two cores for ever, to eliminate audio glitches on CM12 base roms!
1) Download from playstore the app called "CPU Performance Control Free" of mugich (requires root).
2) Open the app and in profiles select "add new profile" that provides:
Core 0 in "Core always enabled" (Min 300 Max 2457 MHz) and set it as Interactive
Core 1 in "Dynamic core hotplug" (Min 300 Max 2457 MHz)
Core 2 in "Dynamic core hotplug" (Min 300 Max 2457 MHz)
Core 3 in "Core always enabled" (Min 300 Max 2457 MHz) and set it as Conservative (because you can t change this value)
Now save your rule with a name, and after re edit the saved profile and change Core 3 from Conservative to Interactive (now you can change the value, it s a bug of app!); resave the rule.
Now select the profile saved and go in settings and check "apply active profile on boot".
Reboot the phone and enjoy your music glitchs free !!!
Could disable offload for audio in build.prop as an alternative.
I don't like that there is always icon for root access visible.

Is this the glitch that sounds like a sample of the audio gets repeated for a fraction of a second when screen is off at random times? I've noticed this with almost every player, only Apollo and the player that comes with CM12 don't have this issue, and it never happens when screen is on.

That dont remove all the glitches
gonna try this out, thanks!
My question is, why does 2 cores need to be on always to stop audio glitches? It worked fine with one core on kk. Why is it different on lollipop?
Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk
That's a bit outdated. Not sure when this was done but I see two cores staying online. The CPU cores aren't related. Cyanogen is working on improving audio and getting it to work with nuplayer and enable offloading. There will be issues in the porting process.
Don't compare nightlies of cm12 to a stable near last build of cm11s. That's like apples to oranges. Their builds use hotplugging - mpdecision - not sure where your info is from.
worked for me
Worked for me too. Thank you!!
I cannot set to Min 300 mhz. any issues keeping as it is the default value? thanks
Going to try this .....Thanks for sharing..
In my case the audio shuttering while playing on my car stereo still remains although the duration between them is now long.

This seems to help quite a bit but doesnt solve all the issues when using with Bluetooth.
Here's my situation, using todays Nightly and stock CM12 kernel (or any for that matter):
wired headphones - everything works great.
bluetooth with screen on - stutters/laggy/distortion
bluetooth with screen off - everything works great.
I dove a bit deeper and also found this:
Bluetooth with car strereo (Subaru Impreza 2013 Sport Limited) -- stutters like crazy when screen is on.
Bluetooth with stereo headset - works great all the time.
Bluetooth with wireless speaker (Tango TRX) - works great all the time.
Bluetooth with Belkin BT stereo adapter - works great all the time.
So, my current conclusion is that this only has issues when using with my car stereo. This happens to be the only paired device that displays song/artist/album info on display. The others do not have this feature. I also have BT drops when using my car stereo answer phone calls.

I've had this problem on a Galaxy S4 GPE Lollipop ROM, in that ROM's changelog:
-Turn off experimental NuPlayer by default - Should help fix some audio stuttering issues once and for all.
Worked for me. You can change this in developer settings. In my experience it's a combination of kernel issues and this setting.
This actually made things a hell of a lot worse for me!
Before I had pops every couple of seconds, enough to make me stop listening to music and only listen to podcasts and audiobooks.
After following your instructions to a tee I now get some bizarre time-stretching effect on bluetooth: everything gets pitched up with tons of audio 'holes' to make up for the contraction of the sound. Just tried to listen to Simon Mayo interview Colin Firth - it was like listening to Pinky and Perky MCing over breakcore.
I wonder if audio is ever going to work on lollipop on this damn phone...
nuplayer is the culprit
just disable nuplayer in developer options and no audio glitches

Wow, back-in-time-quoting, this sure as hell won't be confusing to anybody .
I just ended up installing franko's kernel r37 yesterday, fixed the issue for me.
Besides disabling nuplayer kills the ability to play web based videos entirely...
