Why are there 2 Nexus 7 development threads? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why are there 2 development threads for the Nexus 7? I don't understand why there is original development and android development. Might be better to merge both threads.

Ahh I found it, still don't see the point of 2 separate threads. One central location would be better.

one is for actual development, the other is for kangs and such(other peoples work). and youre right, there should be one development thread, the kangs and such belong in the general forum

i wonder that? and they do? if they did, im guessing that rootz would be much more active, but they are not. now why should non development be classified same as real development? just because you can kang someones elses work, does not make it development or you a developer. they are not the same. xda decided that they would put all the kangs together in a "development" section then put all the real development separate. that is more respectful to the real developers. whats wrong with that? at least you know what you are flashing that way. besides, you asked the question. if you dont like the answer, you shouldnt ask.

with that i agree. it seems as they have applied it to all the newer devices only so far, not just the n7. but they should go back and apply it to older devices too.

Many older devices don't have the development to support the change. My g2x definitely doesn't.

truth. but some still do, both the galaxy nexus and nexus s still do. but I guess they are further subdivided already, for variants.

I've decided for now that I really like them being divided, each has its place. The sections are great although the threads aren't always in the correct section it seems to be getting a lot better.

ICS on NS4G

I noticed that even though the ICS source code is now available Google only has Android 2.3.7 drivers for the Nexus S 4G's internal hardware (CDMA/WiMAX, Orientation Sensor, etc) available currently. Is it possible to compile a working version of ICS using the Android 2.3.7 drivers for the Nexus S 4G? Also, if I follow Google's compile instructions to the letter is there an easy way to backup my current stock ROM? Google's official stock ROM's for the Nexus S 4G phone has a script called "install-recovery.sh" that runs on boot removing Clockwork. Am I correct in assuming that ICS would do this if I compiled it myself per Google's instructions and flashed it to my phone?

This isn't dev section material... And there are already working builds of ics if you don't want to go through the hassle of doing it yourself...
Although! If you do compile your own, then post it in our lovely dev section.
Follow the leader @corythug
I'd rather compile my own. As stated in my original post I just need a couple of questions answered first. Otherwise there won't be any new ROM's from me in your so-called lovely dev section.
This will be moved once a mod sees it, but, next time know this. People will be more apt to help you out if you put a thread like this in q& a or even maybe general instead of mucking up dev forum with a non dev thread.
Follow the leader @corythug
Haha. That's so funny. ICS is making people mental.... you should see the Evo 3D section lol. We're pissed over there! Straight up riot.

OP, I apologize for the others lack of decorum on this site. I am afraid that I am not much help, but I have a couple of suggestions:
As far as the backup, you can make a nandroid and once you are done playing around you can reboot into the boot loader and use the fastboot to reload the recovery onto the phone. From there you can re-install the nandroid backup. Keep in mind that you might want to copy the backup off of the SD card just in case you need to lock/unlock the phone. (This erases the sd card.)

what makes you the OP and every one else showing ignorance in these forums, so goddamn special that you cannot post threads like these in the general section?

What's the difference between Android Dev and Orginal Dev?

Silly question, but what's the difference between Android development and Original development?
See similar postings (ROMS, kernels, etc) in both
It makes more sense in the HOX forums where you have sense roms in dev and aosp roms in the original dev section. Since this is aosp to begin with I too wonder what both sections are for.

I asked the same question but didn't get a answer
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
its the difference of someones original work or a kang. some modified kangs would be considered original works also. its not a black and white answer, considering the real answer would belong in a huge gray area.

Disagree. What's the point of covering something that is extremely easy to find? A bit of a joke with a sprinkle of ridicule goes a long way to teach a lesson that 99.9% of questions are answered already and are easy to find using google.
I think it adds a bit more confusion and extra work to sort threads out. However, I'm not driving the ship!

Yes, I have a good suggestion, place your question in Q&A! This is the wrong place.
Dang, people are brutal in here. I would try the cm10.1 nightlies. Just download goo manager from the market and browse ROMs, look for dev "cm" and get the latest nightlies and gapps. That way you can get the nightlies easier and flash every day if you like flame on!

They are not brutal. This section is for development. Q&A is the correct section for questions. Do you really want to wade through 500 question threads while lookimg for a rom? No, you dont. Ergo, the Q&A section. It is there for a very practical reason.

If you are on a pc, just click report. I cant, due to being on the mobile app. Either way, the next mod will either close or move the topic to the correct section. On the bad side of that, i fear he will be treated impatiently there as well. Hks very question is asked alot, and usually gets the same answer. "Flash some and try them". The reason is nobody can really tell you which rom is best for you. Everybody has different wants and needs from thier device/rom/kernel combo. It is a trial and error thing. Multirom can be used effectively to test perspective roms, while still keeping your original one till you find a suitable replacement.

In future please keep all questions to Q&A, the development forum is for development threads only.
Thank you
My mistake... That said how about blocking these jerks who feel their "I'm cooler than you" comments that serve no use other than to inflame the issue. Not to mention attempt to show all of us how on top of life they are? I made a mistake and posted where I should not have. And I get how that causes issues. I do no come to these sites to be addressed as if I am subhuman. Again, Mr Moderator, my apologies. I apologize for turning this morons world inside out. Maybe we should take guns away from everyone...

As always, you know how XDA feels about "Best Rom" threads. Read and choose some that you think suits you.
If "One" would use the "SEARCH" button, they would see that there is an "OFFICIAL" thread just for this.

[Q] which thread is the right one?

i want to buy a new smartphone, i am thinking about buying the G2, so i was wondering if it has a cm version or not, i love custom roms am playing with all this stuff.
in the main page of the g2 there are a few android development forums, but i dont understand what is the device that the general and original forums are referring to.
thanks for the help.
There are separate developer threads now based on carrier. I would check there and if it's not there yet it might be in the future.

I think you mean the difference between Original Android Development and Android Development, not General. Just clearing that up for someone who might be able to answer. I don't know the actual answer myself. Sorry, man.

Original development is for things made from "scratch". Such as aosp Roms compiled by you, kernels, etc.
Development is more geared towards ports, building variants based on stock roms, and things of that nature.
Thank you Devs. From my LG G2.
