Am I the only person slightly dissappointed with the software side of the Galaxy Note? I enjoy a bit of cooking once in a while, so was going to write up some recipes in S Note. But, so far, it has been a nightmare! It certainly is not as easy as commercials would have you believe...

For example, I wanted to write ingredients into a table but shape match failed to even recognise an almost perfect square.

I think it is very useful. Especially the math formula recognition
But, it just does not seem to work. It just feels all very awkward.

Probably!
I find it really easy to use and have pretty much stopped taking anything but my Note to meetings at work, shopping when I need a list, annotating images and sending them via email, etc.
I've even used the MHL out to connect to a projector and do software and process diagrams on it!

If you aren't getting on with S-Note try another app instead of moaning about it. FreeNote is free and pretty feature rich.

Well, I have found an option in "Settings" which means that my finger doesn't let me draw - makes it easier now that I can now rest my hand on the device's screen whilst writing.

I use S Note for storing recipes, as I like to do a bit of cooking and I can easily capture text and images from recipe sites into S Note - ready to test the recipes whenever I feel like it. I also use it for any other general notes that I need to take, but I utilise S Memo for taking memos. This means any tasks or reminders, which I link into S Planner, or a shopping list for example.

That setting just makes it so that you can only write with the pen. You can rest your hand on the screen with or without the setting. Palm rejection is built into the OS.

Yes, S Note is very immature peace of software. Especially its hand writing recognition is a joke. Useless. The only usable is MyScript Note, ported from Lenovo. I think this company delivered its engine for S Note's math formula, thats the only feature usable.

Note the GNote is sensitive to stylus angle as well as the handedness pen setting. The 'natural' idea of putting the note on a table and drawing at a 90 angle is something that actually causes the note to freak out.
I highly recommend Scetchbook Mobile from the app store for a bit more advanced drawings/options. Works great with the S pen.
Sketchbook mobile is great but for me it has some issue with the note, the tracing is quite laggy and pressure is not working
Try Fresco its really really fast, pressure won't work yet but I like it more than sketchbook
Also 2.3.6 seem to have a new version of s_note which works waay better now, shame that the screen rotation also rotates the canvas, this is maybe good for notes but annoying if you just want to sketch...

As you know, those of us with Galaxy Notes complain about the "lagginess" of the device and the inaccuracy of the S pen. There is an app called TouchScreenTune on the Play Store for Galaxy Note that lets you adjust the S Pen accuracy and the Screens responsiveness.
The free version lets you see that the app actually does work and the licenced version lets you save the settings. The licence is 5 bucks. And, of course, your phone has to be rooted. But I would highly recommend TouchScreenTune.
nice finding! looks good... i hope the author of this app makes money, but on the other hand I hope we get the fix for free on ICS...
Thanks for the info. The offcenter calibration of the s-pen have made me not use it at all!

yeah it was intended for the GS2. Perhaps this is a placebo effect people are getting on their note? lol

WOW, NO DIFFERENCE.

I actually did purchase the licence myself and I do notice a difference. Is it perfect? Not really. But it does make an improvement...at least to my eyes anyway. I have a pinball game app and since I increased the touch screen sensitivity, the flippers respond more quickly. Not as quickly as I would like, but an improvement none the less. As for the s pen settings, it works as advertised. But I wonder why Sammy didn't include something like this in the settings menu in the first place. Maybe with the ICS update? I hope so.

In the trial version the settings are lost when the phone locks.
Spen calibration is really only an issue for left handed ppl who curl their hand when writing... other ppl probably wont experience it. Its very noticeable when i write. Lecture notes app has a calibration setting for writing I just use that.

I have to agree! The reason for the slight offset of the S-Pen is due to the natural way you hold a pen when writing on the screen. Therefore Samsung set it like this purposely. After a short time you get used to how this works and it becomes natural.
I did find another app though when looking at this.. called Jotter (for Galaxy Note only) it has a 100% palm rejection when writing on the screen, so it feels more natural to rest your hand as you write. I tried it for the 15 minutes and it worked well, but I don't write notes enough to justify spending £3 for it.
in order for this to work properly there needs to be some code that is put into the kernel. We on the i717 have a debug kernel that DA_g created that has KALLSYMS + KALLSYMS_ALL in it. Im not sure if this alone is all that is needed but it does make my SPEN more precise as apposed to not having this at all. But in order for this to work I had to use da_g debug kernel.. any other kernel it didnt change anything....
I like the default S-Note app, if it wasn't for the INCREDIBLE slowness of it, on an otherwise very fast phone.
Why is it taking like two seconds to open a note, save it, etc.?
Anybody have an idea if its operations could be sped up somehow?
I totally agree with you on this; I think it hasn't been written properly. The devs should do something about it.
Regards.

have to agree, its not nearly as fast as the rest of the phone
I just keep thinking there must be some glitch, which is causing it to misbehave, as it pauses without a reason, and it's not the phone slowness...
If we would find out how to make it faster, it would make for a definitely a much better experience.
Perhaps people who flash the latest ROMs could chime in here, if they see a marked improvement in S-Note speed...

Yeah, definitely slow.
I'm assuming it's just because it's kind of new, and it will be faster with newer releases.
That was one of the first things I noticed when I first got the phone. Everything else is fast!

Yeah, I'm agree with you.. Love this apps but hate the slow response when opening and saving.. Hope they will fixed this on the next update firmware..
yup, kinda slow here as well.
Opening and saving a note takes alot of time in here aswell. No change to that even if I flashed ARHD 4.0 and redpill kernel. Also if I zoom in the S-note and write by handwriting the lines are drawn extremely slow and nonresponsively. Would be great it samsung would address these issues with S-note in the future updates.

Its got something to do with sucky ram management in touchwiz.
The main apps which are supposed to be in the RAM all the time like dialer and s note are on least priority
Lose hope that Samsung will do something about it...they're customer care is poor.
Sadly though, bear with it or use a different app
I'm sure it has nothing to do with RAM management. Some opening / saving operations are slowing it down, or are wrongly implemented.
This when app is in memory, so it has nothing to do with swapping in out of memory, and thus Touchwiz.
I don't think too that this slowness of the app is related to the poor ram management.
If You use another note taking app You could see that this is very fast and responsive.
The major lag of the original Snote app is when You tap to create a new note and when You swith the pen to different tools or color.
Hope that Samsung could improove it in next Firmware:silly:

Hey - great Video.
I noticed something on 4.1.1 (and did not see it in your video). It took me for a spin-loop the first time: When downloading something fom the web (deafult browser) it does not save the file anymore to the internal (/mnt/sdcard/Downloads) - but instead to the external SD-card (I assume when one is present. I have not tried it without my externalSD yet.
Thanks again for the features.....

One disappointing thing I have noticed in s note.
If you wish to have a custom background based upon an image it does not save that image as a template background for future sessions. You must go through the entire process each time. I prefer to write with a white pen on black lined paper. It would be nice if the background gallery would retain this option for me between sessions.
Also I do not see any way for us to custom design our own templates. Am I missing something? I can think of a number of layouts I would like which they do not offer by default.

Yeah, if its possibe, ideally enough so we can read the menu options, pause the video so we can see if anythings new or changed, generally a better view of everything, if its possible, i assume you do it this way because its easier, less fiddly not worrying about being out of camera, im assuming

If you save a blank note with the background you want, when you want to start a new note, open the orginal and "save as" before you start using it. The orginal "sort of" becomes a template. Kind of crude but faster than changing the background each time. I think the S-Note we have is going to be the S-Note we'll be living with for quite a while.

Now that there's a Windows version of S-Note they'd be smart if they published a SDK like they have for the S-Pen in general. The fact that syncing S-Note's to a Samsung account has been added might mean something's planned for the future.

Unless you use the "smart" features you don't know that for a fact. I have been using the smart features on and off for over a week, with the features / gimmicks on and running there isn't much battery drain at all.
While a lot of the features are gimmicks some are actually very useful.
Smart stay - (the best one out of all them, should be in stock Android)
Quick glance - (use this all time while it's on my desk or on a table)
Air view - (helps me dig through text messages fast and zoom in on some websites)
Air gesture - (I actually go in the gallery a lot and this makes browsing photos more fun and... natural? in a sense)
Palm motion - (use this all the time to answer phone calls and mute or pause music also use it to capture screenshots
Direct call - (I have to admit it's nice and very useful to just directly call someone while simply just moving the phone to your head while in the texting or contacts app)

I used Air View for a bit but it made my screen too sensitive which i used those specific programs.
besides that the only Air feature that i might turn on is Air Call Accept. And it only works during phone calls so its not bad.
The watchon TV controller thing is a bit weird. Doesnt work all the time..
Today I was eating lunch with my phone next to me. Got a call and used the gesture to answer and have the speaker turn on without me touching the phone. That was nice. Voice control camera is cool, but saying different things changes how the camera shoots. I'm still figuring that one out.
Thanks for the replies, none of these sounds useful to me.

Alright, i apologize for the snap judgement. Im fanatical about battery, and they do drain extra, which to me is unacceptable for what you get in exchange. Was much more impressed with the smart stay than any of the new ones, and depending on how many times you let the screen almost time out it can add a fairly substantial amount.
Your right, i should probably rephrase my 'hog' assessment, im probably more picky than others about battery. .
