Replacing Samsung email app with ICS stock - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

Hi,
I am having problems with the Samsung email app. Long story short: if you use Activesync to configure a live.com / outlook.com account you can't change the outgoing name! It will always display the username instead of, for example, first and last name.
Is there an easy way to replace the Samsung email app with the ICS (AOSP) stock one?
Thanks,
C.

[Q] CM6 and Exchange

I'd like to know about other people's experiences with CM6 and Exchange. With the stock email app, I have noticed at times that at times it would start using a lot of cpu, and stop receiving emails. I did have "all email" sync, but these issues would happen randomly after all of my mailbox was downloaded; could this have anything to do with it? I would have to reboot my phone for email to start working again. After reading about people's experience in the CM6 thread I thought it might be appropriate to have an altogether separate thread. I did notice some users having similar issues, and that TouchDown is a good alternative.
So about 2 weeks ago, I started trying it. Problem is, when I go to add a contact (discovered this by long pressing a number to create a contact), it will let me create a "TouchDown contact", but only with names. I contacted touchdown support and they said that no other applications can have access to TouchDown data for "security". I did put in a feature request for an optional contacts integration, because my Aria is a work phone, and every contact I add I *need* synced. I did think about adding contacts to Google account, and then installing Google/Outlook sync on my work pc, but this seems too convoluted.
Has CM6 exchange improved in any of the nightly builds? If I choose to go back to the stock email app, is there any way that if I run into these issues again I can provide debugging information? The only thing I really liked about TouchDown was the search email feature, but this is in no way a feature request for the stock email app. xD
Why not ask in the cm6 thread instead of starting a new one?
I've been using stock exchange mail client since the beginning of CM6 on aria, haven't ran into any major issues with it. The only problem I have with it is that sometimes the deleted email on aria still show up on desktop outlook.

Just wanted to add that stock client does stop getting emails ( very rarely for me), instead of rebooting, I just forse close the app and restart it again.

For adding/syncing contacts (using touchdown for email) I added the exchange account (under stock email settings) and set it to never check mail, but still sync contacts and calendar. I am going to see if this combination with touchdown works, as the email app is required to run if syncing exchange contacts is to work at all. I hope don't run into the process hanging without email actually syncing. I'm still waiting this trial out to see if touchdown is worth it; they did add a new feature that shows the number of new emails in the notification icon (I don't recall if this is in the stock email app).

HTC Mail on 2.3.3

Hi All
Anyone else got this problem
I updated yesterday to 2.3, and now I'm having problem with the htc mail with Hotmail account as a Exchange sync.
Fist off all it won't download any of my past emails, even when i change the option to 30 days or 3 days etc..
Secondly every time i read an email for delete one and it does a refresh it pull all the emails down again thinking its a new set-up, so it doesn't mark the emails on the server.
Anyone know of any fix for this?
Nik
Hotmail never worked for me using HTC Mail App. I use touchdown now.. much better, but you gotta pay for it
I have the same issue as you describe, would believe it is consistent on all 2.3.3 DHD devices.
Exchange (via HTC mail) on froyo did not work with the Hotmail server, and it seems they still haven't got it working as it should with 2.3.3 either.
Does anyone know where i can get the Android Mail apk for 2.3.3
I tried looking for it on 4shared but with no luck. I downloaded "Enhanced Email" from the market and it works exactly the same way!
airsick and niktheman, I have PM you the link for the stock .apk

Is the Mail apk (I assume you mean the default email app on nexus s) the same as "improved email" app? it's free from marketplace and I use it everyday with @hotmail, @msn, and @live account. All exchanges work just great (you must know you need to use server: "m.hotmail.com" in exchange settings right?).
So I think there is no need to use mail apk app or the HTC one, "improved email" is just good.

Downloaded it, b ut it won't install, i also do have unknown sources ticked.
Hi,
I found I had the same problem with the HTC email app when I upgraded to a Gingerbread ROM.
The only way I was able to resolve the issue was to delete all five accounts then manually add each account again (three IMAP gmail, two POP hotmail).
Everything has worked since then (although I don't like how the unread count now relates to since you last used the app rather than actual amount of unread messages).
Hope this helps.
p.s. good to see another LFC fan. With King Kenny at the helm and Suarez buzzing, we've got a good chance of getting back in the Champions League next year - all we need is a top left back and good wingers.
I am expericencing this issue also but on my HTC Evo. Ive tried everything i can think of and nothing. No one has a fix yet? Do I need to install a different email app???
still searching for a link to download the APK :S

[Q] configure exchange email

hello
i have encountered the same pb on S3 and now also on the S4. I can not configure the exchange email app. only the mail. how can i do that because it seems to me already that samsung only says that you have exchange email but it doesnt work. wtf?!
Mail exchange works perfectly on Sgs3 and now on sgs4... I use it non stop. Ask your administrator of the mail exchange server settings. You do something wrong with the settings.

Wow .. now that activesync has expired on gmail I need to reinvent my mail syncing on my new s4.
The way I wanted to go about it is that I let gmail sync calendar and contacts and use the native mail client via imap.
Why not use gmail for mails too .. well because I need to set up my work activesync account too .. and I don't want two apps for mails.
First thing I notice is that when I set up imap access to gmail with the native application I get no push functionality (imap idle). The shortest sync frequency is 5 minutes. This is not good enough.
I am now thinking about using the eMail app from CM10.1 .. which served me well on my old device but I really don't want to loose any of these nifty Samsung features (which I may already have lost because I installed swiftkey from playstore .. don't know yet).
Anyone have some tips for me on how to proceed?

Google has stopped providing exchange mail for private and personal Gmail (starting February 2013), so you can use the build in Gmail account in your phone or to set IMAP.

That was for "additions," not legacy users. I'm still using GMail ActiveSync with my N2 and Note 10.1 Does anyone know if it's carried-over based on GMail account or only by individual device? For example, if I got a SGS4 would ActiveSync that's currently working on my N2 continue to work on other phones I swap after that?

Yep .. either switch to outlook.com, use a software that can do imap idle (K9Q i guess .. never really got into that) or do it like i do it right now .. live with the 5 minute delay in the standard email client and do the syncing for calendar, contacts etc. via gmail account.
At least this is my solution for today
Actually I'm using a hacked client from CM10.1 .. to not have to enter the PIN so often. The thing is that all Samsung stuff is lost .. like in-mail translations .. this is quite a pity .. I really hope for a security patched version soon. Oh .. to clarify .. the patch is not for my googlemails of course .. but for the other exchange account I have to set up.

[Q] Anyone been successful setting up an Exchange account?

Has anyone been successful setting up an Exchange Account with their new note 4? I am using the settings I have always used before and I keep getting an authentication error. Even my IT department is baffled. . . .
Yes, try adding a \ to the front of your exchange username. Ie: \[email protected]
Sent from my SM-N910P using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah. . . did that. No success. I have not spend 2 hours with Samsung and my IT department and no one can get this to work. Very strange and very frustrating!
I've been able to add 1 account (a free outlook.com email) with no problems.
I have another (an alma mater university email hosted on Office365.) that failed exactly as you described. Settings were correct. It still failed to authenticate.
I checked to see if it would authenticate my work email, which it worked, but I refused to give it admin privileges because they have onerous PIN requirements. So it never actually downloaded the email, but it did complete the setup process.
Maybe the app is trying to connect on the wrong port? That's the only setting missing from the app.
Ready for Samsung dumbness . . . After 2 hours with Samsung tech support, we finally installed a third party email app that worked fine with our exchange servers. . . Samsung's response. I guess your email is incompatible with our email program. . . that's too bad. . .
No promise to look into it or correct it.
New phone. . .native phone app won't work. . . Even my old Touchpad running cm9 can use this email server. Way to go Sammy!!!!!!
Worked just fine for me. I have the MX record of a private domain name registered with Office365 from Microsoft and mine worked without a hitch. It is all in the way those responsible for the Exchange server set it up. Some require domain specified, some don't require the slash, etc. If they have their autodiscover record set up correctly in DNS all you should need is your email address and password.
I will take it up with my IT department next week, but I find it odd that both Mail Wise and Nine can access the server with no trouble.
Working fine for my hosted Exchange.
Problem solved.
I have Samsung s5 with 4.4.2 that my email works.
And copied the settings to my note 4.

Seconded
I use MS Office 365 for Small Business and have a private business domain name for both my website & email (same one). It took me a little bit of time but I was able to set it up on the native Samsung email app. On my S3 all I had to do was enter my email address & password and it quickly set up, Note 4 was a little more work. None of my administrator settings have been changed (I'm the administrator) so apparently the native app has had changes made to it.
I will mention that I briefly had a LG 3 and it would not set up my MS Exchange email through its native app. I called LG tech support and they couldn't do it either. Only way I could set it up was through a 3rd part email app K9.
This time I set up my GMail & Yahoo accounts through the native app in addition to the MS Exchange account whereas on my S3 I was using the GMail & Yahoo installed apps. Everything works fine.

We had a client with a similar problem with Exchange and LG3. The solution there was to TURN OFF SMS sync. Or to be more exact, setup Exchange with SMS sync off.
Not sure if that same problem exists with the Note 4s, but worth a try.
Are any of you using "push" as your sync setting? I used it on my Note 3 and it worked fine without much battery drain. On my Note 4 Exchange Services never lets the device sleep. Interestingly, my N10.1-2014 just started doing the same thing after a firmware update. I'm trying to figure out if it's something on the device side or server side that may have changed.

Solved my issue.
Sprint Note 4 -- I have 2 Exchange Activesync accounts. Both worked concurrently on my Note 2.
One was already set up and working on my Note 4 without issue. This one is hosted by the MS365 platform. The second account throws the authentication error using the stock email app. This one is hosted by the corporate Outlook.com division. I got it working using Nine in less than a minute.

[Q] Galaxy S5 Exchange Email Link Removal

Hello, we use ActiveSync to push out email to our company's Galaxy S5 phones. We have our users use the built in Samsung email app. However, we are noticing that the built in email app strips some formatting from the email that our previous phones (Droid MAXX) and the new gMail app don't strip. I took some screen shots of the same email being viewed in both the gMail app and the stock email app: http://imgur.com/a/gW0GI
The stock app seems to be stripping some of the formatting like font size, boldness, color, etc. But most importantly, it is stripping the ability to click on URL links. For example, the gMail app allows the user to follow the "Tell us how we're doing:" link but the stock one does not.
Is there a setting we're missing?
