ey guys,
i'm using the latest CM9 nightly (cm-9-20120808-NIGHTLY), but also tried the CM9 RC1, and what i'm about to describe happens with both of them.
The thing is that when i flash without the sim card everthing is fine, and i can scan and connect to any wireless network.
When i insert the sim and configure de APN, wifi simply stops working. I can see the profiles that i've previously created while wifi was working, but can no longer scan new networks, or connect using the profiles that are on the list. Also activating and deactivating wifi takes a long time, to the point that it a popup shows saying that settings has stopped responding.
After this i just remove the sim card, return to a previous backup made by CWM, and everything is fine, wifi wise.
Is there a fix for this?
(Sry about the english, not my main language)
Thanks for any help,
jb

Also, and since this problem is ONLY when a SIM card is used the post title could mention it.
(also, btw TheATHEiST, so sorry for now knowing every single post on this forum by heart, my bad, but then again... one more post count for you , attaboy)

Hello,
If you don't want the boring details of how I discovered the problem feel free to skip the next couple of paragraphs and go straight to the technical details.
I got my first Android phone (Motorola Defy) a couple of weeks ago and at first I was only using it with wifi because my data plan wasn't activated yet. While playing with it a little I realised that I saw a lot less ads than my boyfriend on his 6 month old Defy. I thougt it was weird but, well, seeing less ads is not a big problem.
Then when I got my data plan I saw that when I wasn't home I saw a lot more ads, so I began to suspect it had to do with how my phone was connected to the internet : wifi or 3G.
Next I wanted to try out Astrid and when I tried to log in using my Google account it failed repeatedly. Until I disabled wifi and it logged in fine using 3G.
Then I installed RTÉ DocOnOne to listen to documentaries while falling asleep. When wifi is enabled, it cannot start up because it can't connect (network timeout). Over 3G, no problem.
At first I thought it was my router blocking ports or something but it happens with different wifi APs and more importantly my boyfriend's phone, connected to the same access point, loads everything without a problem.
Let's sum up:
Some apps can't access the network using wifi but work fine when using 3G.
It happens regardless of the wifi AP (tried 4 different ones with different routers) and another phone using the same app connected to the same wifi AP can access the network just fine.
If I initiate the connection using 3G then switch to wifi (typically I launch the app with 3G, switch wifi on without closing the app), it still works after that (RTE DocOnOne has no pb streaming the documentaries once it has launched)
My phone is a Motorola Defy, French retail ROM, not rooted, no motoblur account (skipped the configuration), Froyo 2.2.2 (already on the phone when I got it), system version (if that means anything to you) Version.34.164.3.MB525.Retail.en.FR, kernel 2.6.32.9-g050ccf2, build 3.4.2-164
I can't give as much details about my boyfriend's phone (that doesn't have the problem) because he's not here right now but I can tell you that it is a Motorola Defy too, French retail (I think) ROM, Froyo updated from preinstalled Eclair (using the official Motorola update), not rooted, with a motoblur account
I have no idea if that's relevant or not, but my phone has the "google maps 5.7.0 crashes on Defy" issue (18446 in the android issue tracker) and my boyfriend's phone hasn't.
Has anyone encountered this issue before ? I couldn't find anything on this forum or with a google search.
Is there any tool I can use to try and find the cause of the problem ?
Thank you for reading all this, sorry if my message was long but I wanted to give as much detail as possible to help the nice people who may find what is wrong with my phone
I didn't read all..
but if your phone don't have problems then check this:
1. go to settings
2. Select "Location & security settings"
3. enable this "Use wireless networks" Location determined by WiFi and/or mobile networks
4. test does it work...
Hello manumanfred,
I did what you suggested (actually it was already checked) and the problem is still there (tried unchecking it too).
I am not sure why you suggested it, was that related to some phones having wifi problems in some countries ? I read a thread about that when I was researching my problem but it is different. In my case, wifi works most of the time, but some requests always time out.
Thanks for trying
Anyone else has an idea of something I could try ?

Did you tried to undervolt your defy?
Similar problem
I have a similar setup with Defy and CM 7.1.0-11-Defy which is Android 2.3.7.
I used the Defy Baseband Switcher to use India settings.
I do get 3g & 2g cover, but it's patchy.
Sometimes I get perfectly working data and call connectivity but then suddenly without warning the connectivity goes away.
No calls, no data connectivity. But the status bar doesn't show that it is disconnected.
I then go into Defy Baseband Switcher and once again set the settings for India and reboot.
I then get connectivity back but only for a short while.
Any help regarding this would be highly appreciated.
HI
I have same problem. I have installed stable cm7.1-11 yesterday.
In my baseband switcher there is not a option for india.
When I will select hongkong (900/2100) I can get signal properly and can call but I am not able to hear and next person also not able to hear.
If I will select south koria(2100) there is no network found properly. When network available I can call properly (voice working).
Please help me to select proper baseband for Vodafone in india.
The stock CM 7.1 comes bundled with the Defy Baseband Switcher v 4.0.05
This version doesn't carry the India baseband.
There is an update to this which v 4.0.07. You can find it in the forum here, just do a search.
This update needs to be flashed by the custom recovery and then you can find the India option in APAC.
I have done this myself but yet my reception is patchy.
Thanks
Problem seems solved by using latest version from below post.

I have undervolted and OCed my proccy.
But I dont think that would cause any RIL problem.

i agree with you,,,i think all of these are about the hardware...if these are about the RIL,,i think all the defy will has these problems..
So, do I need to get it checked out in Motorola Customer Care?

Hi, olxd. How did you go about solving your problem with a 3g mode? My Defy+ reboots itself the moment I turn it on, when 3g mode is activated. It can work a bit longer with mobile networks data blocked, but eventually i get the same reboot loop. It seems that there's some sort of a hardware problem 'cause I have tried installing different roms and have used a row of programs , but nothing's helped (
I'm having the same exact problem, so far no solution I suppose... However from what I read, an old SIM card might be the answer to our problem (new SIM required to amend this issue), I'm not sure which one has to be used, but another guy from xda solved his problems by changing the SIM card (I'll look the post up, I forgot his name)

Have tried that. Actually, I've got two brand-new SIMs from the biggest local operators. Neither of them works in Defy+, but both do perfectly in Samsung Galaxy ACe. So now I'm going to return the Defy back for repair/replacement because it's definitely a hardware problem.
The sane here

I'm having the same problem ... What interesting I have installed 4.1 android and there was no problem with that for maybe 3 months and recently 3G goes away permanently....
I have a HD2 with an older version of android cooked on. Android version 2.3.7 Kernel version 2.6.32.15_tytung_r12.4-heebf2c Mod version is CyanogenMod-7.1.0 Desire (Typhoon_v3.7.0 Magldr) I think my radio is 2.15.50.14
At any rate I found a link on the web that referred me back to xda developers where tytung made a package for wifi calling. I can't seem to find the link again and am having trouble finding the op. I do know the zip is titled "WiFi-Calling-htcleo-GB_for_NAND_v3.1"
I transferred the zip to the root directory of my sd card, launched it in file manager. It had me give super user access and it rebooted my phone to install. Phone works as normal, however I didn't see anything installed from my trials. Did I miss a step?
I am trying to receive calls on my cellphone while my phone is connected through wireless. I want that to "boost my reception." I have no reception in the house I'm living at now. I'm next to a mountain.

thank you, with the link you provided me I got the tmobile wifi dialer on my phone. I have one more issue. I have been searching on how to fix this, but I cannot figure it out. My phone will freeze when I turn on wifi. Someone mentioned that volume+ can cause this issue. I looked through my applications and do not have that, or cannot find it at least. That same person also suggested increasing the cpu frequency.
Is there a how to on this? I saw someone mentioning opening a text file, modifying it with specific values and then rebooting the phone. Any help would be much appreciated.

Look up no frills cpu control from play store to mess with cpu settings, am not sure how successful you will be though in getting wifi to work.

I followed your instructions exactly, and immediately got the wifi calling to work. It worked very well the first day, however my phone still freezes constantly with wifi enabled. Can anyone give me some troubleshooting steps to solve this issue. I installed no frills and messed a bit with the settings, but that didn't seem to take care of the problem. Should I go through every combination, or is there a recommended level?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My phone preforms very well, excluding wifi use. I even got a new sim card from t-mobile and that did not solve the issue. My phone basically does not work with wifi enabled.

Hi,
After learning so much on the forum, this is my first post.
I've never seen a problem like this and I did everything I could in order to solve it. I really ask for the help of forum members to shed a light...
PROBLEM:
When the internet is set on WCDMA/GSM or WCDMA only, it works for a little time (something between 10seconds to 5 minutes) and stops for a random time (something between 1 to 30 minutes).
If I make a call and it connects, during the duration of the call the HSPA works flawlessly (That is way too weird!)
FACTS:
1 - The internet works perfectly in the GSM only mode
2 - The place where I'm has a great reception for the HSPA (I have another phone to make sure of it)
3 - I did a complete factory reset and now I've KitKat 4.4 (installed through Odin) and the phone is rooted. The problem was there before all of that.
4 - As I said, during a call the connection works great without any problems at all.
Is there anything I can do? I complained to my service provider and they opened a file to send to the tech department.
My guesses are either there is something wrong with the SIM card or with my line. But I want to rule out any software or hardware issues...
Is there anyone that can help me?
Thanks
I've had glitchy internet once after flashing a custom ROM. Couldn't find anything wrong as well.
Then I stumbled on a tip from someone who said it could be the location settings under Google settings.
I switched once to GPS only and then selected high precision and after that the problem was gone.
Don't know if it will help you but definitely worth a quick try.
Hope it helps.

What are you running? Stock? Unrooted?
If not, be sure you aren't using any Xposed Modules or apps that automatically tweak your data connection.
Make sure your APN settings are correct for your provider.
Other than those things, I can't think of anything else that would make your connection as wonky as it is.

Ryo,
I'm running stock KitKat 4.4.2. Anyway, the problem was there on 4.3 also. Yes, it is unrooted but with just a few apps and none of them messes the conexion...And, in any case, I've done hard resets at least 3 times...
Reefee
Thanks for the info. Unfortunatly without luck. Still, I've found out that while the GPS is working (say, under Google Maps), the HSPA also works...
Hi all, this is my first post or thread, i came here cause i heard from ppl this is best site for asking questions about cell phones, i started reading allot this forum and wow did i enter the other world i really like and wanna participate in.
Srry for little intro and lets get back to topic. So i got my first "normal" android and got trouble with it. I am using Samsung galaxy s5 g900F (european) factory unlocked and T-mobile as carrier with 4.4.2 kitkat. I have a big problem with a data connection that keeps going off every 30sec to 5 min if i use option to search and auttoconnect on LTE/WCDMA/GSM option. I read forum but no1 is mentioning this model as problematic 1 so now i post thread about.
Does any1 know what could be problem and how to solve it. Sometimes my data connection comes back and sometimes it doesnt and i have to switch type of network to get back again online. All other options that don't include LTE auttoconnect work just fine, i tried to get another SIM from carrier but same problem, i tried to get another Phone since i work in hardware firm and still same problem on another device, both were same models.
I still didn't put any ROMs but i really consider doing it maybe l8r on, it is stock version.
Pls be genttle since this is first time i post, maybe i did it on wrong place but i did read rules and everything and i think i did it on right place.
Ty in advance.
I did have a slightly similar problem years ago - when in roaming my phone could not connect to anything. What helped was a change of simcard for a new model - after that all was good.
Since you did try your SIM on a different phone (same 900F?) I would advise you to try: first on a completely different brand and phone model - if you can.
If this does not solve your problem do shake your service provider a bit - they could have supplied you with two faulty SIM cards in a row - that can happen. Otherwise - maybe there is a stupid limitation in your service plan which is causing this. There is no - to my knowledge - ready answer to the problem you have described.
Best of luck and if you do solve it come back and post - it will be very useful to lots of people for sure
Cheers!
Too many variables. You haven't observed enough of a pattern yet or tried enough things to narrow it down a bit. It could just as easily be carrier side issues as a bug in the firmware not negotiating a new connection if the LTE signal is lost.
A number of people were having data disconnect issues and that was addressed in the 4.4.3 /4.4.4 update. So that is one option to consider. And you could open a support ticket with your carrier. That is hit and miss as to results, but sometimes tickets actually resolve issues.
There are also a number of apps that may mitigate or possibly even solve your issue. Have a look at 4G LTE Switch and LTE Discovery.
.
Will try it today. Thanks for the help. Really appreciate it.
