Is 16GB enough? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I really really wanna pick one up, but I'm concerned 16 GB won't be enough. Since its WiFi only I would have to basically save all my music for offline play (Spotify) in don't really plan on using it for pictures since I have my gNex... are people with the 16GB model finding they are maxing quick?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

well idk if its enough for music (depends on how much u have). i have the 8gb version and you only get 5.91gbs on it. i couldnt even install half the games i have because they take up way to much room.

This is obviously a pretty personal question since we don't know exactly how much you plan to put onto the tablet. If you need more space, then you can use USB OTG and attach a flash drive.

If you don't play big games then 16 GB is fine and for movies and music you can also use USB otg cable and use USB thumb drive or you can use cloud storage. I use both and both are fine solution.
I do however play big games and for games 16 GB is not enough.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

16GB is not really enough for all the things the Nexus 7 is capable of, IMO. Which is why I think its necessary to root in order to take advantage of the USB OTG feature. Its a great device nevertheless, just gotta learn to make do with what's available.

No 16 gb is not enough, i would have bought a 32 gb if it was available.

Well nobody can really answer that for you, depends on how much space you actually need.
It is plenty for me and more than enough for my needs.

[Q] 8GB or 16GB help

Please help me choose between the 8 or 16 model. I really don't think I will need the 16GB Nexus for I will use it for but I also d o not know what type of storage is left on a stock device.
It will mostly be used to stream movies / TV shows from my home server with the occasional game. I enjoy games but have found tablet gaming lacking to me, so I find myself installing games but then deleting them. I do like to tinker so I doubt I will stay with ta stock rom but would assume most are going to be AOSP.
Thanks for the help.
Here's my 2 cents...i regret getting the 8.i have 1.3 gb left, and i have no music or movies, or books for that matter. It's just apps. I have one large games, 1.3gb, the rest are small apps. I don't remember the last time i had to worry about storage. It sucks. I love the tablet though.

OS takes up about 2GB. So you'll have about 6GB out of the box. I guess some people can get by with the 8GB model, but it may be awfully tight.
It kinda sucks to have to pay $50 more for 8GB more, but I think it's worth it.
The thing these guys are missing is that you can attach a usb stick of whatever size you like to the N7 via an otg cable, ok you can't run apps from it but you can keep music, books, videos etc there. 16Gb is always going to be better but it's not so much of a problem now if you go for the 8Gb unless you really want tonnes of apps on it at once.

Couple of nice games and you're begging for more space. I am easily taking 10 GB with my apps alone.
Definitely 16 GB. I'll sell mine to you. I hardly ever use it.

16gb. The 8 GB only really has 5 GB left for the user anyway vs 13 on the 16. Thats a big difference.

I'm amazed how fast apps take up space so glad I went for the 16gb, a few large games and you won't have much storage left on the 8gb.
As for connecting memory sticks, yeah its a nice option to have, but not always good to have to carry memory stick + on the go USB cable around with me.

It really depends what you do with your tablet. I have the 8 Gig but for me that is enough. I have all the apps I use installed and still have 5 Gig free but I only use it to check my mail or Facebook and the occasional Skype call or a few smaller games and to surf the web. For me 50 buck for 8 more Gig was not worth it but for someone else the 16 Gig may be the way to go.
Depends what you want to use it for. I dont really play any of these big games on mine because the controls are garbage. I got like 20 games on here, few of them being gameloft and ea games, i have all the apps i need. Not much music or movies stored locally, i use an app Vkontakte for music streaming and google drive for everything i might need. I have access to internet all day, so if you think you will want to store a lot of content locally, get the 16, if not, get the 8

I was fine until this five day all sale started. Now I'm going to 3-4gb in apps alone and I've had the tablet like two weeks. But a used 16gb one so you don't need to worry. I have a otg cable coming too for my car rides home when I need music and can't stream because the middle of pa is nothingness.

Have to agree, I got the 8GB version, and bought a 32GB flash drive and an OTG cable with the difference with change to spare. All my music, movies and things go on the flash cable. The 6.5-7GB left out of the box is plenty for me to run any apps, games and anything else. Only downside I do see is the problem that when OTG cable is plugged in, you cannot connect to charger.

I used to think I wouldn't need the 16GB Nexus. But with Google's recent sale.. I somewhat regret just going for the 8GB model
Go for the 16GB
I have a 8GB Nexus 7 and regret buying it for lack of any credible storage. It offers only 6GB storage. This can accommodate 2 large games, few applications. However, even in this you will face issues upgrading a game, as it wont have enough storage space to download a update file. So please go for 16GB version, if you plan to have even 2 large games on your Nexus 7. Further, you wont have space for your occasional, movies, music for use on the move.

Did well. Because u can resell later at higher price.... On ebay... Or else. And u can install anything you want.... And have a super tablet with lot of software, pic and music... Even a few movies for travel.

Is 16gb sufficient memory for the nexus 7 or should I wait for the 32gb!!!!!!

16gb is fine as you have cloud storage also usb storage with OTG cable
I think 16GB plenty, hell, even 8GB is plenty for me as long as you're not keeping local media on the device.
I'm getting the 16 but that's all Walmart had, I'm a cloud whore.
16 is definitely not enough..google should have came out with 16 on low end and 32 on high end in the first place..16 is just barely enough for songs+2 games+ backup
The actual memory is only about 13gb which kind of worries me as I want to play alot of games!!

That's how I feel about it.
I don't even see the purpose of stocking the tablet full of movies either.
-Brought to you by Marino's Galaxy Nexus-
i think 16gb is plenty. i have 0 movies and 0 songs though. Documents or anything similar is either on skydrive or another cloud service. i use my tablet to read comic books and once i read a complete series, i delete it right away.
and it does suck that it's really only about 13gb total, but i still have around 10 gbs left.

That is probably because they reserve that other space for when you do a factory reset and it reinstalls all the Google apps that it initially came installed with.
It really depends on what he is planning to use his tablet for. Most HD games now make you download gigs worth of data just look at 'the bards tale' 1.5gb for normal and 3.5gb for HD and Horn just to name a few.
.mkv movies are also huge limiting you to only a handful at a time. Sure there's cloud storage, but the N7 doesn't come 3G enable (yet) so its reliant on a WiFi connection.
Basically you need to ask yourself what the tablet will be primarily doing? Gaming, movies, trolling, or all three? It all depends.

It will be mainly used for gaming and movies and some internet browsing!!!
I'm cool with 16 gigs. I have a USB OTG cable for my 32gig flash drive. I use Dropbox for cloud storage I have a ton of apps on my N7. I don't keep music or movies on it as they take up so much space. I prefer useing my OTG cable for those.
like my others devices,16 gb are too low.yes,i know the clouds and similar things, but here in italy we have indecent speed with carrier operator and wifi isn't so common out home (and where there is,it's wpa locked).i can't store my music in cloud (google play music is a nogo in italy)i can't sore my pics in cloud due to the fact there are more possibilities i'm in a place where i haven't signal on my phone (for tethering)and wireless out there..in this case clouds are more than useless.and to end,it's always better have all in the storage, less battery and data consumption without always using the web to connect with clouds via tether or wifi.this,it's the only thing that i hate in the google's last year ideas.don't get me wrong,i have 3 nexus devices, but with only 16gb storage a lack of microsd is real for me. (and not speaking to the fact of sell only 16gb versions always in ita\europe,like they did with gnex, the gsm model haven't the 32gb storage)
Also without store musics and others stuffs,3\4 hd games and 200 apps installed gets the tab full.

16gb is fine for me but if they do release one with more storage then I'll just give this to the wife and buy the new one.
I'd say look for a 16GB on craigslist now. If you don't find one for a decent price, you can wait.
If you do find one, you can turn around and sell it once [or if] the 32GB releases.
I purchased the 8Gb version
I use cloud storage for everything, have downloaded lots of games (obviously not those over 1Gb..), and still have the chance to use external cards for movies and everything. Dropbox, Drive, Minus, Box, SugarSync, ActiveSync gives you lots of room. With Jukebox you can manage and hear your music. There are free cloud storage services for movies as well..
I feel like I don't need more room within, and still have 4,5Gb left. I hear music, see movies.. edit documents, share them,..
If you move with today's technology, you will soon notice that Google designed the 8Gb unit and considered initially to be its best seller because they took into account the cloud storage facilities we have nowdays
They have been caught with surprise that people request the 16Gb and now the 32Gb. We ask, they delivery..
But I move confidently and are happy with my 8Gb unit..
This does not means that I recommend you the 8Gb over the 16Gb unit, but you can take into account this information to take a decission.
I bought a 16 GB N7 and for me it's enough.
I have 11,22 GB still available and I've no idea how to fill that space!
I bought the 16 and it is almost full. I had no such problems on my 32gb touchpad. If you want to play a lot of games or have a lot of media on your device it isn't going to work for you. Cloud storage is a lame excuse when it's a wifi onlu device plus most high end games require 1-2gb. If you don't plan on doing these things 16 will work fine. 8gb is really too small for most things.

Actual user available space posted above.
As for running out, it depends on YOU . Will you stream music, or keep it on your device? Will you keep movies on it (this I personally think is stupid because I can never enjoy a movie on a less than 60" of screen)? Will you play heavy 3D games, or just the light casual games like Subway Surfer or Bike Race? Even Dead Trigger is only 130MB of space, some games like Asphalt 7 take a whopping 2GB.
Also, if you plan on taking full advantage of the camera's 1080p video recording and like to take lots of 8mp stills, or photospheres, then you'd need to transfer all those to your computer rather requently to save space.

More than enough for my personal needs. Guess it depends on the person.
One thing differently is I no longer save my nandroids on my device. I use tool kit to save to PC (which saves about 3.6 gigs) Pointless to save on the phone either way.

Agreed yes I use a toolkit and don't save a bunch of nandroid backups. I still have over 3.5gb left. I'm amazaid everything is the same as my skyrocket and I had over 10gb of space used up. Its just much cleaner and I'm making the effort to keep it clean. Now if I could go back I would still buy a 16gb. It just didn't end up that way even though I tried at the time and rushed into a buy. But now that I have an 8gb. I'm not worried at all just having to learn to use box.com for pictures and such. Its just up to the person I guess.

Not regretting it one bit. I stream all of my music and very rarely play games. All my photos are uploaded to Google plus so I can delete them if needed.

I am going with the 8GB, $50 is a pretty big premium for only a little more space. Basically my thinking is that if I wanted to keep a lot of stuff (movies and music) on my device then 16GB wouldn't come close to enough. This will be my 4th android phone and I have never installed more than a 1-2GB of apps. I have almost a 30GB dropbox accounts where my pics and home movies get uploaded automatically, a 50GB box account for any additional storage (ROMs, backups, etc), about 5GB of music on Google Music (I have an Ipod that is part of my car stereo anyway where I listen to most of my music) and then I have Netflix if I ever get bored with movies. Once I decide on a solution to stream my 1TB of HD movies from my home HTPC I can't imagine myself ever needing more than 1-2GB of phone storage, that still leaves me a 3-4GB buffer which should be enough if I ever want some local storage for movies/music when I'm somewhere without a signal.

Looks like the 8 GB is enough for your needs.
Just remember to save all your pictures somewhere besides the phone (should be a habit on any device anyways) periodically.
From my experience, GB ROMs are less than 100 MB but from my understanding ICS ROMs are at 150 MB, or less...? Either way you have plenty of breathing room after what your media uses up so you can hold plenty of ROMs. Other users above said they put backups on PC and had a lot of space freed up, so friendly suggestion to do that.
And me, I just ordered the 16 GB version. Just because I'm one of those people who just want extra space for the sake of being there. I'm probably going to have 8 GB or so of extra space.
The USB OTG thing was something I did HEAVY research on, because I assumed if older versions of Android supported it, then a newer one would too. Almost jumped for an S3 because Touchwiz adds complete native no root support for all things USB OTG. I guess I'll live without it until some dev gets a software mod working.

I'm doing fine with the 8GB. All my pics are automatically uploaded online and I delete them right away from my phone. Don't have many apps installed on my phone. As for Nandroid backups, I copy them to my computer for safe keeping and to save up space. Can always move it to the phone if need be.
As for music and videos - don't transfer much. Just stream mostly.
Just fine, I have a dozen video podcasts, a dozen audio podcasts, ~100 songs, a couple large games (RPGs) and some pics/vids...still have 2.22gb of free space.
Just go with the 16GB. It's better to have more storage, than to have not enough.

Didn't get the 32GB Model? This is better!

If you're like me, you decided that the 32GB model was too much for so small extra storage. I decided to go this route instead.
First, you pick up one of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/151083670634
Then you get one of these or use one you have laying around from a previous phone (I have several):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007XZM6VG
Then you root and install "StickMount" from the market for free. You end up with a 48GB or larger model. It's also great for accessing photos I've saved on my Galaxy Note 2 (saved to SD) and viewing them on the bigger screen.
I do my Titanium and Nandroid backups to this device and then I'm not carrying them around on the device all the time taking up space. Yes, this even works with TWRP Recovery, as you go to the "Mount" menu and set it to look to your OTG device instead of onboard storage.
If I need to load up some movies for a trip, I put them on the SD and pop them in when I want to watch. Really works great.
I still like having the extra internal storage. I do plan on storing Nandroid and Titanium Backups backups on a flash drive using this method.

Games, ROMs, and movies are what kill me. I like to store a few different ROMs, I have a bunch of large games (Grand Theft Auto, Bard's Tale), and I usually keep about 3-5 movies until I watch them.
At only 40 bucks difference in price, not getting the 32 seems silly.
Just so others know there are other flavors of usb otg devices out there. Just get the otg cable and connect an external drive or any usb stick. Or mouse/keyboard.
I got the 16gb model because they were out of the 32s where I picked up mine. Still thinking if I should go back and get the 32 but may give the cloud/lan a try and see how I do. I use tasker and a couple programs to auto upload files when I'm home, so really the only thing on my storage is apps. Media is all pretty easy to stream where ever I use a tablet.
I would rather have more internal storage then external storage. The fragile micro USB port is the weak point of the tablet so I want to use that as little as possible. Besides using it for fastboot and ADB while in recovery, I do everything else wirelessly including wireless charging, ADB over Wifi and transfer over WiFi. It is much more convenient to torrent straight onto the tablet then transferring from the PC via external storage or be dependent on the OTG adapter always plugged in for downloading onto. A single TV episode is 1 - 1.3 GB and a movie is 2 - 5GB so the ~11.5 GB of useable internal storage is really not enough.
I just use my router+external hard drive as an ftp server as backup. Also use it as a dlna server. No need to store anything locally. As long as I'm on my lan...

I got the 16gb model because they were out of the 32s where I picked up mine. Still thinking if I should go back and get the 32 but may give the cloud/lan a try and see how I do.

Exactly my situation... amazon was sold out on the 32. I actually think it is a good exercise to try using the smaller version with cloud services. I have plenty of Dropbox storage and have Dropsync Pro purchased. Also have box.com and Asus' storage solution. Must have 200gb total! File Expert cloud services works great and is quite fun.
This approach is just right for me. Not for everybody, of course.

Roms kill me. Start crack flashing and next thing you know you're out of storage. I also like games and when playing BardsTale on my 16gb, I hit the wall. My 16gb got stolen the same day OfficeDepot started leaking the 32gbs early. I literally came home with 16gb, read XDA on PC and immediately left again.
OTG is handy but I wouldn't want to be reliant on it. I use it mostly for grabbing files off USB disks.

I was going to point that out too.
In case anyone is curious, there is a video describing the product here:

By the end of August they will be available, I've one ordered.
32GB is the best for me. Road trips and shorter car trips, I don't have access to cloud services, and I don't trust my young'uns to not break the micro USB connector with a cable and USB drive dangling from it. It's nice to have it locally and not be at the mercy of Internet speeds wherever I happen to be. Is there anything more annoying than stuttering youtube?
Not recommanding
TF card have very slow random I/O, it's better not to use TF card.
Low random I/O means slow game loading.
And don't think class 10 TF cards would be better at random I/O than class 2 ones because they are not.
Use small USB flash instead would be better, if possible.:cyclops:
I bought a 16 GB then I used the office max coupon and got the 32 GB f bout $15 cheaper then I paid for the 16

Yeah, yeah. Goody for you. The point is if you didn't get the 32gb, this is a solution that works. Not for all who need the 32, but they wouldn't make a 16 if it wasn't good enough for many (like me).

I like that one, too. However, mine was cheap and the fact that the other one isn't available seems to weigh pretty heavily toward the one I selected, right?

Are you concerned about space with the 32gb 6P you ordered?

After cancelling the 64gb graphite 6P, and going for the smaller 5X, and then cancelling the 5X and reordering the only available 32gb graphite 6P after realizing I'd much happier with the bigger device, sleeker looking, better specs after all. I'm wondering now if 32gb will be enough. I plan on shooting alot of photos and videos with this rumored great camera. What are your thoughts about the size?
Are you concerned about space with the 32gb 6P?
I'm not because I ordered a kingston c to A USB on the go. Despite that, 32 is perfect for me. But since you shoot lots of photos and videos 64 might be better but I upload everything to the cloud anyways.

There will be something like 26gb usable on that 32gb.
Ive probably got that in games and office apps.
If youre gonna be shooting 4k videos and storing music etc youll soon use it up.
Ive gone for the 128gb so I dont have to worry about it.

no problems here, i have a 32gb nexus 6 and a 32 gb chromebook pixel 2015 and 32gb is more than needed with devices always connected online
32gb should be fine especially if you use OTG thumbdrive and the cloud...

How do those work, you have to leave it connected to device as you fill it up? Or just to quickly transfer data to it and disconnect?
Use as needed like any other thumb drive.

Using a 64GB device now and I don't think I'd ever go for less for the foreseeable future. As much as you can get around things by using cloud services, you will always have that hard limit of ~26GB, which isn't that much... Especially for a large device that would be great for watching media.
I used to think i needed 64+ personally until I took a look at what I actually had on my device. Once I removed all of the crap I had on there (Games/movies/apps I no longer used/watched) I found I didn't need all the extra space. I also store all of my music, photos and high res vids in the cloud all the time so I can keep my device clean. When I travel I load up my device with all the media i'll want for the trip (just in case there is no in flight wifi) until i get where i'm going and I've still never run out of memory on my 32GB nexus 6
So pretty much this is a question no one can answer for you. It varies from person to person and you're just going to have to figure out how much memory you will require based on how you use your own personal device and the cloud services available to you.
I wouldn't go any less than 64. I have 70+gb of photos and videos and I like to have them to hand without relying on the cloud. I also have 40+gb of music. For me 128 isn't really enough either.

I hear ya, but this question was more aimed at the people that actually ordered the 32gb version
Presumably most people who would have been concerned about lack of space on a 32GB 6P would have ordered a larger one.
Yeah.. I'm doing just fine with 32GB on my N5, I only ordered the 128GB 6p because why not.
If they had the larger I probably would as well. I better get that otg drive.

I ordered Nexus 6p 32 GB and wasn't concerned until I saw this post
Do we know the size of 1 min 4k video recorded on Nexus 6p?
I found this link for S5 -
forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s5/365425-how-big-would-1-minute-4k-video.html
And the other link on one plus forum -
forums.oneplus.net/threads/how-much-storage-is-required-for-1-minutes-of-4k-video-shooting-1-1.8220/
(don't have enough posts to share external links so had to make them simple text)
Both these links confirm the size to be 3.5 GB for 10 min of 4K video, which actually concerns me.
I should have gone with the 64/128 GB. But now if I cancel my Nexus 6p 32 GB order I don't know how long I'll have to wait for 64/128 GB as they both are out of stock.
:crying::crying::crying:
Just buy a sim card adapter and if you need more space plug it in and put stuff you don't always use on the external sim card easy..

I have everything backed up online anyway, and I use Google Play All Access for my music, so I don't think 32Gb will be a problem at all. My current 32Gb Nexus 5 has so little stored on the actual phone, I've still got 12Gb free.

Do you mean SD Cards?
My 32GB N5 was full of TWRP backups more than anything else, so not concerned, 32GB should be plenty. I used to carry all my music with me, but now I uploaded it to Google and just stream it from there. Photos go on the NAS and Google Photos right away too, the phone is just a temporary cache.
32Gb is fine for me. I have a synology solution with plex.
So music/tv/films are all streamed OTG, yes it will suck as i need constant connection but I have unlimited data anyways so that doesn't concern me.
If i really wanted to take some films i'll just use a USB OTG storage solution. But that is super rare for me. I don't play games on my phone (tablet & PC for that)
