I'm planning to move some pictures into my tablet through USB to view in the gallery.
What directory should I save the pictures under? Any default locations? Thanks!

I put mine under the pictures folder in the SD card. Picked them up immediately as I opened gallery.

The stock gallery will pick up any pictures in folders on the /sdcard. In the gallery, the folder name will be the name of the folder that the pictures are in (intuitively). However, the gallery will not pick up hidden folders (folders that start with a period-- i.e. . )
Take a screen shot to double check where they end up. It *should* be dcim

Is it possible for someone to create an app which stops certain media folders which contain files like splash screens, game videos, game music album art showing up in the gallery and the music player. Would be very useful for alot of people.
Btw I'm not sure if here is the correct place to post this so please don't criticise me too much. Lol

No need for an app. Just put a . in front of the folder name. This makes the folder "hidden" and the content will not show up in the gallery.
Example:
"Pictures" as a folder would show up in the gallery.
".pictures" would not.

Thanks mate but would this stop the apps from reading the folder as the shortcuts will have been changed?

Yes, that will.
So instead, if you put an empty file named '.nomedia' in a folder, it prevents mediascanner from listing that folder and any subfolders media. Not an ideal solution, but unforutnately there are no alternatives.
To automate this task, there is an app in the store, but I cant remember its name now.
Sometimes when I go into the gallery application to view my pictures not all the pictures are displayed. Using a file-browsing app I am able to navigate to the folder where the pictures have been saved and I can verify that they do exist. But why do they not show up in the gallery application.
To fix this issue I usually have to reboot my phone and the missing pictures are loaded in the gallery application. Is there any other fix to this issue ?
Another issue is that sometimes in the gallery application there are some thumbnails with an error (exclamation mark displayed). There is no picture associated with these thumbnails. Any solutions ?
I have the same problem. Realy annoying.

Same sort of issue on my desire HD 1.72. I get the issue with videos not showing up and videos that have been deleted show up as a broken thumbnail with the ! Mark.

I get all these issues as well, glad it's not just me!

run an error checking on the sd card from a computer and let it fix the errors.
Your problem with the gallery app will most probably be fixed also.
Unmount then remount the SD card in
Menu > Settings > SD & Phone Storage
Works for me.
The issue I have with Gallery app is that sync issues with Picasa. There is no way to select web albums that you want to sync. The app will display all the albums - listed or unlisted.
It's not really useful when you cannot organize the albums in the app.
Ok today was the first time i used the camera app on my play. I took some photos but now i want to actually access the files without sharing them via facebook or email but i cannot find them anywhere on the sd card or on the main memory. My phone is rooted. The only way i can access the photos is by clicking on media and viewing them that way. Does anyobe know where photos are saved(the directory location) thanks is advance.
There should be a folder on the sd card called DCIM they are in there

Anyone found that if you have installed some apps that included a loads of data with some mp3 format, your stock Music would load them into your music library.
So that, when I shuffle all the songs, I would hear some characters' saying or weapons' smashing sometimes. All I can say is ****...
Can someone teach me how to avoid this matter? It's really annoying.
stock Gallery app also has the same problem.
I have tried to delete those sound effects from Music. However, when launch those app, I would get "Data is not completed, please re-download."
P.S. I'm from HK. Sorry for my poor English.
Create a file on notepad im windows which is blank and save as .nomedia copy to all folders with unwanted media and when rescan occurs they will be gone
Make note of the fullstop above before nomedia as this will create it as an extension you may need to select all files in the save as command prompt or it will save as a txt file

Does it mean I just need to create a blank text file with any name and set the extention to .nomedia? And drag that text to the folder with the unwanted media file?
Sorry for my confusion
Yep spot on no filename but extension and copy to tf and put in the folders causing probs

Wouldn't it be great if it were possible to configure the gallery app to show only the folders that you want to see...

For the life of me I can't get the gallery to refresh after I add pictures to my pictures folder. Am I missing something or is this yet another bug?

Took me 2 days to get some imported cam pics to show up.
Try killing the gallery in the task manager. Also try rebooting.
Android gallery has always been crap if not for picasa integration it would be totally useless. Try quick pic. Ugly but very functional.
Thanks..... I tried killing with task manager but no go.
Maybe I should just use Picasso... good lord.
I tried 3d gallery and it wont display correctly at all. Ill check out that apple you mentioned.

Quick pick will work great for me. Thanks again.
Is there any app to view JUST Picasso pics that you know of?
*edit* Picasso tool works, but osmotic made for tab.. either way better than the pic delay of the stock gallery.

Did you copy it from pc to tablet or form different location on your tablet to gallery folder?
If the second option don't use any file managers from the market. Instead use file manager that is included in touchwiz.
Don't know why but all other file managers don't move cache when moving photos.

I did not use the stock file explorer, I used file explorer HD and in this case copied from SD card to the pictures folder.
Ya know, I like the idea of using qucik pic and picassa tool. I can upload to picassa from quick pic and when viewing I can use picassa tool, gallery, web , etc...
With quick pic I can easily hide or remove folders so I don't have this cluster of unwanted pics
I just demo ed the gallery from my media folder all together.
Kind of lame but it is what it is. ...

Use stock explorer and you will notice that there is no problem with photos. Don't know why but I didn't have this problem on transformer.. Weird

Android uses an internal database to remember multi-media files (pics, music and video) so that built-in apps like Gallery, Music and Video players can show them regardless which folder they are located. If you copied any such type of files to the tab using 3rd party tools that does not trigger media scanning, those files will never show up in these apps until next time media scanning runs.
On my Samsung Galaxy S phone, such media scanning is done everytime you power up the phone or disconnect the USB connection in mass storage mode. It is a slow and painful process on the phone.
On my GT 10.1, this process has been some what improved mainly because there is no USB mass storage mode. The default MTP mode will automatically update the database when file transfer occurs. The built-in File Explore can also properly update the database. But if you use 3rd party tool, chances are they will never trigger a media scanning process.
It doesn't matter which folder you copied your pictures into.

Don't want to sound like I'm shooting the messenger here... But... that sucks.
Really, I already have too many options to "open with". The last thing I want to do is remember to use the original file explorer to deal with pictures.
I'm really started to be reminded of a certain apple product... you need an app for that.
If someone just streamlined all the apps to work as one they'd have my money.
In any event thanks for your reply....
Media scanning is part of Android OS design. This is poorly designed and poorly implemented, IMO. On my phone, everytime I power up the phone, it renders my phone unresponsive for a minute or two (depending on how many files and whether or not I have an external SD card). The scanning process needs to scan the entire file system to make sure every media file is indexed in the database.
FWIW I worked around this issue with one of the random market apps for SD updating. There's a number that work, basically it just initiates a refresh manually. Alternately you can plug it into your PC with USB and then unplug it.
Got the name of any of those apps?
I realized you can't change the lock screen from anything but the stock gallery.....

SDRescan, one of the oldest, still usefull apps in the market.
Rescan Media, pretty much the same app with a nicer icon and an auto quit option.
