external speaker issues? distorted/scratchy - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got the Nexus 7 today from staples. First off, even though it was sealed, there were a ton of fingerprints on the screen. Either way I continued to open it and turn it on. Now when I'm watching YouTube or even the Transformers movie that was included, the sound is distorted and scratchy coming from the speaker. And the volume is about 60%. Anyone else having this or notice this issue?

Nope, my speaker sounds great even at full volume. Has a reasonable amount of bass and is nice and clear

Return/Exchange the device. My 2nd unit did this and it's not normal.

[Q] Noise from the display

Firstly, I love the device. Had it since Friday morning and it does all I want it to apart from BBC iPlayer and the sky app (the name has left my head).
Anyway onto my question...
I have noticed that when using the tablet in a quiet environment, I can hear a bit of a buzzing/whistling sort of noise from the screen. If you hold the tablet in landscape with the buttons facing up, the noise is coming from the left side of the screen.
Is this normal or is there something wrong with it? My inital thoughts are that it is normal, but I have not had a tablet before and not used one in quiet environment before.
Thanks a lot.
How loud is it, annoyingly loud, or not too bad?
I'ld be surprised if it's coming the screen. My guess is it's either the left speaker or it's cpu whine.
I dont hear any noise.. or maybe Im deaf?? D:
joke.. no noise here. Will try again later at night when it will be quiter.
I have the same issue. I notice when you turn the screen off the sound goes away. It is starting to become annoying.
I also have this noise. Even that loud, that Google now does not understand me. If I record sound, I almost only hear this noise.
The noise varies with the display brightness.
Google will replace my device. The replacement is already ordered.
I suppose it is a voltage regulator making this noise.

The noise is not ridiculously loud, but I can notice it. I guess noise from voltage regulator sounds like a likely cause. Any idea how long your replacement will take? Might try calling Google on Monday and see what they say.
I called them Friday morning. Today I received a link to order the replacement. Expected shipment is Wednesday.

Well my replacement should be with me on 24th. I have however just noticed how the sound gets worse. The dimmer the screen, the noisier it is. On full brightness, there is no noise.
I also have this noise and I've concluded it only happens when I have auto-brightness enabled. When it's manually controlled it doesn't make the noise but as soon as I turn on auto brightness it starts to buzz faintly.
No noise other than what's caused by auto brightness.

Unfortunately for me it is also there if I manually set the brightness low. Even more annoying is that if I am using Skype the other party hears nothing but the buzzing. Turn the brightness up and they can then hear me. If the next tablet has the same issue I may have to consider a refund and wait and see what gets released early next year. It is a bit of a showstopper for me as I use Skype a lot.
I am wondering if that is interfering with the mic when I record. The record quality on this phone is boo boo.

Turn screen brightness up to full and then try. If you get less/no noise, then it looks liek it is down to the screen. When I was using skype. if it was set to auto/low brightness ther other person just heard a lot of noise. If it set it to full brightness, they could then hear me and not the noise.
I also have this problem, does definitely appear to be directly linked to the screen brightness. The dimmer the worse the noise.
Waiting for Google to sort out RMA as they seem to have something odd with their administration.
Hope it doesn't take long!!

I called mine in on the 19th and had the replacement on the 21st. I can confirm that the replacement does NOT suffer from this issue.
Shame Google can't seem to send me the correct TNT tracking number. The one they originally sent didn't exist (and still doesn't) and the one they sent me for the replacement had been delivery delivered to someone else miles away many days before I even requested the RMA. Just waiting for my return shipping label now.

I'm sure once an RMA is raised then it should be quick based on your experience, it a shame that they have messed up their admin and I have to wait because of it.
My tracking number made no sense either.

Just now noticing this as well, but it seems like the noise has gone away after having the screen on for about 30 minutes.

Can't say as tonight is literally the first time I looked for/noticed the issue. But I'm assuming the buzzing will come back either after the device or screen is off for awhile since I've used my N10 plenty since I got it.

It seemed to be most obvious when screen brightness was at its lowest. Noticed after about 10 mins out of the box.

Buzzing Noise When Using Headphones

I've heard a lot about a buzzing noise coming from the earpiece, but whenever i plug in my headphones it makes a really annoying buzzing noise. I'm running AOKP Build 1 with Franco #28 kernel and the beats audio mod. I'm also using original Apple earphones. Any thoughts on how to fix this without flashing AOKP from scratch again? Thanks!

I recall someone else saying Bluetooth being on can cause problems. If it's on try turning it off.
Otherwise I don't know, mines OK with skull candies.
Bluetooth is off :/

I had an app that trigged the proximity sensor. Uninstalled the app and the noise was gone.

Is it like a actual buzzzzzzzz sound or a rapid click click click sound? If it's actually a click noise, it is the proximity sensor, and you have some other app constantly running it. If it's a buzz, are you running a custom kernel? Do you usually crank up the volume? Have you messed with headset gain?
I have the same problem. not rooted
and its not buzzing.its more like rapid clicking, but I don't think I have any apps that use the proximity sensor. idk what to do fam

What the f has the kernel to do with this buzzing noise? This is one of the stupidest suggestions I read in my entire life.
The noise is hardware related. You can't fix it with software.
Guys, you have to accept that the Nexus 4 ist a cheap built smartphone with a LOT of problems, and I am not talking about the bad camera or the bad display in general.
I am talking about the huge and small bugs, for example.:
- noise in earspeaker
- buzzing noise with headphones
- heat-problems (YES, the N4 actually HAS heat-problems)
- Sleep of Death (LED and sound is working, but screen is black -> restart with Power+Volume)
- not-responsive screen when unlocking/not able to answer a call because of this
- dark line on the left side of the screen (especially on grey backgrounds)
- (maybe I am the only one with this problem, but this happens very often) when I am trying to unlock the ring, the status-bar slides down
- WiFi and GPS problems
- and more
Sure, the N4 was really cheap in its price and the problems testify that this phone is cheap.
The parts they used are cheap (e.g. DA-converters, display (don't tell me that it is possible to adjust the screen colors), speakers, cameras, microphone etc.). Maybe also the engineers who built the N4 were cheap.
Before I bought the N4 I had a Nexus S. It was WAY better than the N4 in many points.
I always recommended the Nexus line to my family and friends. But after using the N4 for long enough I will never recommend it again.
It's a piece of crap with a well-meant OS and causes headaches.

Lots Of Headphone Noise

When I'm using my N7 to play music I get a lot of white noise in the background. It's barely noticeable in loud songs but when listening to a quite song or nothing with the headphones plugged in it is extremely noticeable. Does anyone else have this problem and has anyone been able to fix it?
What headphone you use? My nexus is also make noise with my sensitive iem (cx300 II).

I notice it with both my Klipsch Image S-4's and my Bose Quietcomfort 3's. The Bose are noticeably worse, probably because you cant hear anything else.
Unplug the charger? I have the same problem but it's only there when I have my N7 plugged in.

Mine is with or without it plugged in. That makes sense though, with a car charger the noise gets really bad.

Rattling sound when phone put down.

Hello,
Last week,my Nexus 4 slipped out of my hands, face down on It's screen. I thought I was screwed, but luckily the phone was perfectly fine.
Since that day though, it seems like the usual rattling sound that comes from my Nexus , is becoming worse. Maybe it is just inside my head, but maybe not.
Especially when I lay my phone on a hard surface, I hear an irritating rattling sound, coming from the top of the phone.
Does anyone else experience this? Or is it just me? My Nexus is working perfectly fine tho, so nothing has broken.
I am waiting for your thoughts!!
Niels

Camera shutter? That's made a slight rattling sound for me, it may have become worse for you since you dropped it

[Q] Speaker Problem

So I noticed this by accident today, after a few days of usage. The speakers at the bottom of the phone do not work equally(or symmetrically?).
I was holding the phone in a weird position and my fingers were closing the left speaker and sound was fine. I switched hands and right speaker got closed. I wasn't able to hear anything. I thought it was something to do with the video(youtube) then tried with other webpages and the preloaded mp3 from vienna choir. It was all the same. So I get the sound basically from right. The left one is virtually silent.
I can't go the store and test the phones on display. So do you have the same issue?
Only has one speaker other is mic , it's cosmetic
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Lol... I actually did 2 exchanges before I figured out there's only a right speaker. The left one is the microphone. Like the guy above me said, it's just for looks.
