Power Button Workaround? - Thinkpad Tablet General

Hi All,
Hope this is the right section...
I have a lenovo thinkpad tablet & my power button seems to be faulty - I can't feel the usual resistance when I press it anymore and pressing the power button no longer does anything - a real pain once the tablet goes to sleep...
I was wondering if there's any way to set up a different physical button to act as the power button, or at the very least, allow a different physical button to wake the device?
Usually when something like this happens to a device I open it and try to fix it, but I really don't want to destroy another perfectly good piece of technology!! :silly:
Thanks all!!

As long as it's not off, you should be able to wake it by plugging it in with the charger or putting it on/taking it off of the dock. Works for me.

This might work
Try this app in Google play.
Might work based on the description I read:

Re-Assigning Power Button

Hey guys, I just got my 8525 a week ago, I'm still trying to get used to it. Overall i think i like it more then my TREO650 but i have one problem, i cant stand the small power button on the side. Most of the time i push it i push the slide keyboard out too, its so small i can never find it.
My old Treo650 had the power button and locking keys on the END button, when i push END it would lock and turn off the screen, to Unlock i would push END again and then the Center button. Is there any way to re-assign the Power button on the 8525 to be like my old Treo650?
Any suggestions guys. I am having the same problem with small power button

sounds like a personal problem, maybe see a doctor?
On a serious note.. i dont think it can be reprogrammed via the software, i believe the power button is actually mapped via hardware since it is used for functions like putting the phone into bootloader mode, etc.. i could be wrong though.
Hey thanks for the reply although its my phone with the small problem I have tried two programs on the forum here called Devicelock.cab but that only locks the device but you still have to push power to power the phone back up.
I believe the power key can be reprogrammed in one or two highly invasive ways.
However, it doesn't sound like you want to re-assign the power key, but to assign the power off function to another key. Is that correct? That's easy/
If you want to assign the power on function, that is more complicated, but there are work arounds.

I agree with the original poster. The small power on/off button is poor design. When I want to place a call, I first need to turn the device on by hitting that very small button. Then I need to activate the phone app or invoke MS voice command. It's just plain poor design. I love my 8525, but it could be so much better if the product designers at HTC actually thought about the ergonomics of the tasks users do the most.
One more gripe. The phone app is atrocious. Getting to the recent dialed list or to toggle the speakerphone usually requires bringing up a menu. This is annoying for a phone and a better design could mitigate the poor usability. I/m not an iPhone fanboy but take a look at the thought Apple put in there *first* phone and it is quite illuminating on the state of PPC phones.

You could try scrollwheel up or D-pad up for recent call list .
(also down for speed-dials).
Maybe you could map a button for speakerphone, not sure though.

The original poster could - while in a call - try pressing the green button for two or three seconds.
I think it's even mentioned in the manual...
Cheers

Hello.
I agree with the previous posters. The badly placed powerOn button is "bad design". If anyone finds the sollution (to PowerON the device using another key) please share it!
Otherwise, this is a great device. A true pocket computer
Best regards, jZ
+1 for the poor design.
I always hit the power button as I am pulling it out of the case when a call comes in, that turns off the screen, then I have to hit it again to see who is calling, and with all that going on as well as the ringer, the phone has a minor anurism and delays in answering.....
So to summarise the poor design aspect of this thread:
1. The power button is too small/difficult to find and press.
2. The power button is too easy to press/find even by accident.
Conclusion, it's just about right then!!
You can't please all of the people all of the time.

Lol, Shogun, remind us again how many kids you have?
Ok, some Opus Dei style self flagellation for the errant moderators going off topic.
Is this issue now resolved?
V
I can also operate my wifes buttons just fine as well but all i want is to find out if i can move the power button to maybe the PPT button or END when holding it.
Daftek, again, do you want to emulate the power key functionality, (ie on/off) on another key, and/or entirely disable the original power key?
V
Thats what I would like to do......
Hello.
I think we'd all like to assign a DIFFERENT KEY to POWER ON function. POWER OFF is no problem, because a button for this can be assigned through "Buttons". When the phone is in "sleep mode", only the POWER button can wake it.
Any solutions?
Regards, jZ
IMHO, it's possible but not easily.
Easiest work around is to disable button locking, so that pressing any button can wake the device, and then use a software lock to timeout/power off if you happen to poke a hardware button while it's in your pocket.
Alternatively you could rewrite the button driver, but it's possible (although I've not looked into it definitively) that the hardware power button is a hardware interrupt to the CPU. In which case a software based solution will not override a hardware based connection.
V
This is what I did...
I totally agree the power button is a pain, the size, placement...
I know this sounds a bit weird but I took a small piece of plastic (actually from a toothpick) and crazy glued it on the button. It works great! I never miss the button anymore! See picture...

Hard to press (power) buttons

Hi all,
I heard a lot of people complain about the hard to (press power) buttons.
Logically is the main reason why htc makes hard to press (power) buttons is to avoid acitentally turning the device on/off while its in your pocket or wathever.
So why not make good easy to press CAPACTIVE (power) HARDWARE buttons.
I think that should solve a lot of problems
Please share your opinions about this!
A capacitive power button would lead to people triggering it every time they put their hand in their pocket to get it if they so much as brush against it.
It's not that hard to press anyway.
edit: No to mention if you hold the phone in landscape mode the button would then rest against your palm, again triggering it.
a capacitive power button wont be enabled if u switched the device off.. how are you gonna start your phone then .. thats why its a physical button
i have no problem with the power button, i like it. was using a hd2 before and on this device the power button was the same like the [call end] button. and that drained my battery always. sometimes you sitting in a tight seat like on a airplaine and you alway acciedently hit the button or even by walking arround or if you have other stuff in your pocket.
It would have been nice if we could get an option to also use the volume down button to turn the screen on.

Next time please just name the app, makes it a lot easier, and saves a lot of searching.
Anyway, I found it on my own, and the app is called "No Lock". Best thing of all, it's free in the market!
This app will disable the lock screen, and thus wakes up immediately without having to unlock. Also, now you can wake the phone up with the volume button.
widget locker can also power on with volume button, and its very customizable but its not free, well worth the cost tho

Disable Power button when in pocket?

Maybe a stupid question,
Does any one of you have a solution for the power button that keeps turning my i5800 off when hes in my pocket? Even when in locked screen, and i long press my power button, he just reboots .....
Nobody has issues with such a phone in he's pocket?
i was thinking about a hardcase or something, dunno if its gonna help.
Is this issue know among you people? If so pls tell me what you did about it

Robin

Ok so far i managed to edit my keymap layout, and removed the wakeup flag of the power button, this already prevents the powerbutton to show the Phone options when in locked screen mode.
This way he can't change he's airplanemode or something similar.
Only thing i still not understand is the power button behavior when you realy long press it. The phone automaticly shuts down complete. Is this hardware controlled or software controlled?
Nobody knows anything more about this?
Something can be done
Like disabling the power button temporarily by proximity sensor
An app could do this
i'm also looking for a solution with this damn power button...
if i have got my G3 in my pocket it happens quiet often that it turns itself off cause screen lock doesn't disable the power button
does anyone have a solution for this prob ?

The tasker app, could probably pull that off:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...EsIm5ldC5kaW5nbGlzY2guYW5kcm9pZC50YXNrZXJtIl0.
Its a paid app though. You could try to setup tasker to react to tilt sensors as well, an example would be: Tasker disabling the power button when you phone is upside down (like in your pocket). Hope it helpps
For people who have the problem of the power bbutton when in their pockets- Just put in upside down . I get the problem many times so I put the cell phone in such a manner that the power button is facing the top and the camera is touching the fabric of the jeans. Thus making the power buton free from any contact.
Works for me.

@ak700:
power button is facing top, display is facing to my leg that's how i have it in my pocket.
i guess that's the same way as you described isn't it ?
^^^^
Yup thats the way. It works for me even in slim fit jeans too.
lucky you
mine switches off too often when i have it in my pocket like that
i just don't get it why the galaxy 3 turns off when long pressing the power button, but every other samsung mobile i tried (galaxy S, galaxy S2, omnia 7) does not ...
makes me crazy -.-

That behavior can't be turned off. It is basically our "hard reset", to be used when the phone won't react to anything (instead of having to pull the battery). Even though I don'tknow that for sure, I'm fairly certain that this is hardware controlled. Out works even if there it's a kernel panic (better known here as "black screen of death"), when the system doesn't do anything anymore...
Sorry

You could pull the battery out or wait for the battery to die. Just kidding, sometimes the phone turns on automatically when plugged in

I'm pretty sure he asked how to get the phone ON without the power button, not OFF.
And no I don't think there is unless you open up your phone and do some improvised modding in there. If your power button is messed up though you should probably just get a warranty replacement.
For a single time turning on - remove the battery, plug in USB charger, insert the battery. Try several times if didn't work the first time.
When in Android - you can install an OS that supports trackpad wake, to wake the phone up with trackpad instead of power button. Default OS does, too.
For proper power button functionality - there's nothing you can do but replace either the button or the whole phone.
Hmm thanks for that Jack, I never knew about the USB thing. Never tried it on an android anyways so I wouldn't have ever tried it.
As another suggestion, you could try remapping your keys as well. Someone posted recently in this forum about remapping his power button to the camera button to bypass a faulty button. I don't think it will let you turn on the phone with the camera(I'm not sure anyways, I haven't done this), but it will give you power button functionality throughout the OS of your choice.
I hate to bump this but mine just broke and my dumbass decided to pull the battery because it wouldn't go to sleep =\
I'm going to try to get another one tomorrow but I need a phone in the mean time
Thanks in advance

Defect power button.

Hey guys.
Ive been having a lot of trouble with my power button. At first it became less responsive (Having to push the button 2-3 times to activate the screen).
Now it seems like it is not working at all (Having to push 6-7 times).
Anyone seen this problem before and knows of a way to fix it?
Or does anyone know a workaround? (Like using the search button to act like the power button perhaps?)
Thanks in advance.
I don't really have any suggestions on how to fix the power button itself, but I do have a few workarounds if you're interested
The first is Smart Screen ON. This app was featured on the main portal not too long ago, and I have to say, it works quite well. It uses the proximity sensor to turn the screen on and (optionally) off. In the span of two weeks, it's saved my phone over 2000 power button presses (the app keeps track). I have been running the app 24/7 since I installed it and have not noticed any impact on battery life. I'd say it's worth a try.
As an alternative, you may have some luck with ButtonRemapper (requires root). It should let you remap the search button like you had wanted. You could just edit the keyboard files directly, but this app makes it pretty simple. : )
Also, in case you didn't know, the home button will wake the phone by default, but it obviously doesn't turn the screen back off.

Thats what im trying to avoid.
What program did you use to remap the button?
Thanks for the info man!
Yeah it's a ***** how the phone only lasts a year before it starts breaking but glad i can get rid of it in 2 months.
I use ButtonRemapper, i take it you have root access so just download the .APK i have attached and its pretty simple just find the search key in the app and change it so it acts like the power button (It's simply you will get it when you open the app). Once you have done that the phone works fine when in normal use you just gotta tap the search button not the power button.
But as my power button is fully broken im not sure if the power button works if the phone turns off. So my work around is plug the charger in then when you see the sony logo keep taping the volume down until you launch in CWM and then just tap reboot now and it will boot up, hope this helps.
It's the only work around without having to spend money i could think off, so defiantly a good temp fix.
Yeah i think the build quality of this device isnt what it could've been. Although im happy the screen hasnt broken yet.
Thanks for the APK!
