Nexus 7 RMA. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm planning on RMA'ing my Nexus 7 due to screen lift and creaking on the left side. Just had a couple of questions:
1. I've rooted my device, how could I go about making a full backup so I can use the backup to restore onto my new N7?
2. Returning to stock; can I just use the Wugfresh toolkit to return my device to full stock?
Thanks.
EDIT: Posted in wrong section, mods can you move to Q&A please.

in my experienced, u can use this for back up http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
and this for return to stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
btw, im waiting for my replacement coming too >"<

You can use the Wugfresh toolkit for backup and restoring and for the returning to stock.
It has a back and restore section is explains everything as you go.

If you run "adb backup all" from your computer, assuming you have the latest SDK, you could back up your system settings and app data to your PC.
That won't back up the APK files though.
To restore your app data on a new device use adb restore.
You don't need to be rooted.

[Q] Don't Have Rom or Useable Backup On Device - What Next?

I got stuck on the google screen trying to revert from a custom kernel to a dowloaded stock kernel.
Wiped device with plan of restoring the backup I made earlier. When I get into recovery mode and attempt to flash backup it shows "no files" in backup folder.
***How do you get a ROM on the device at this point? N7 will not show on "computer" when connected.
Thanks!
If you're running windows, get the toolkit by WugFresh. If you aren't running windows, search the threads yourself to find out, I'm sure this has been addressed before.
So, 2 things, A) search the forums first, before starting a thread, and B) this is in the wrong section, try the Q&a section next time.

Complete backup and restore.

I would like to do a complete back up of the kernel, rom, apps, data, etc. and move it all over to another Nexus 7.
Is it possible to do a complete backup and restore via USB? Backup to Desktop, and then restore into the new 7?
If so, what is the best way?
Thanks!
If you use an older version of cwm (pre 6.x.x.x) it will create a single backup file instead of the current system with the blobs folder. However I would be very wary of moving one backup to another

Let me explain. I am replacing my Nexus 7 with a new one, and don't want to have to set it all up again because it's perfect right now
No clean way to do this? I have to just rebuild it all over again on the new 7?
If you are rooted, you can almost do it that easy, but you would need to unlock and root the new device first, install recovery and then move the saved nandroid backup to the new device and use recovery to restore that and you would have a copy of your old device on the new one.
The last time I did that,I was up and running on the new device in about 15-20 mins.

If you are not rooted, there is another method, but I've never actually tried doing it, so I don't know how well it works.

Thanks. That helps alot. I am rooted so should be good to go. I was not aware that the nandroid file could be saved and restored to a new device.

On my Android phone, Nandroid does not back up the internal (/emmc) data nor the /sdcard data. Does it back up EVERYTHING on the Nexus 7?

Restore problems after using Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.0

I rooted my device with success, But when i come to restore it then is starts to restore the 2nd app then it reboots and stops restoring. When I rooted my Nesus i was running 4.2 non rooted, any ideas ?
What do you mean by "restore"? Since I don't use toolkits, I don't know what this step is doing here...
If it's restoring apps, I would not restore them, and re-install them after the system boots up. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding this.
Took it is from WugFresh
I backed up my apps and sd card, and I have android *.ab since rooted and going back to stock, I can't restore my apps or my other files from sd card. I even flashed, back to 4.1

Any way to edit the *. Ab file to remove the apps,?

I'm not sure man, as I don't use toolkits to do things, I do things the manual way and re-install my apps as needed from the Play Store, or use Titanium Backup to create an update.zip with my installed apps so I can flash it after a fresh ROM install.
I have 0 experience with this, so someone else will have to chime in to help.
Okay thanks

revert back to android

hey guys i did a native install of ubuntu on my nexus 7 without multirom and now want to ditch it for android again. i see that it didn't get rid of twrp and i can still get into it so if i just did a full wipe including data and then flashed a rom would i be good to go or is there a certain precedure i should be following?
I would try flashing an official CM10 Rom as they typically have better flashing procedures to make sure the partitions are setup right and stuff.
I'd think you'd be OK though.

Id use WugFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit to reflash stock. It walks you through it, and that way it will make sure the file system is set up correctly. Then just root again.

[Q] Rooting Nexus 7

Alright, so I got a Nexus 7 for x-mas (my first and only android device) and I love it. Recently i have been wanting to root but information/explanation has been hard to come by. So, I have a few questions.
1. When i received the device i did not unlock bootloader, after reading about unlocking it it seems that this wipes all the data from the device. How do i backup my apps/data/storage? If i copy all the files to my CPU and then copy them back to the nexus will it work? What about app settings, like my settings on Apex launcher? I've seen threads and apps that recover data after it is deleted? What's my best bet for backing my info and data up?
2. What is the difference in flashing a kernel and rooting an android? Are they the same? As far as i know flashing is reversible, but is rooting?
3. How do you root? I've seen things about utilities (nexus 7 toolkit) and I've seen things that just involve unlocking the bootloader (flashing? i think)
Sorry if these questions have been answered or this is the wrong spot for this, I'm new to the forum.

1) You can't really do a backup of app data before unlocking the bootloader, that's why it's recommended to do it right when you get. I have to wipe everything so i know how you feel.
2) Inorder to flash a kernel you need to root first.
3) You could use a toolkit to unlock and root( either nexus 7 toolkit or wugs') or if you want to unlock and root manually you can use adb, which is just a few commands for a nexus. Both are easy, the only hard part is making sure you have the correct drivers.
Hope i helped and good luck!

Dang, that really sucks. What all can i save? App permissions, any of that?
I was just looking around and noticed there are some Apps that save data/info, the ones i saw were Carbon and TWRP. Would i be able to save my app stuff that way?
TWRP is a custom recovery which you can use AFTER unlock and root and i have never used carbon so i wouldnt know.

I don't own a tablet, but I am a beta tester for a few projects here, I have to wipe all data, but the cool thing is after the first initial wipe, you never have to worry about that again.
A backup of your non-rooted device, I would say do your best with titanium backup, need an easier program? Try go backup pro or Clickfree backup.
Then try to restore. If it fails, retry.. I got that a lot, most game data saved is usually stored in /mnt/sdcard/Android/data or /mnt/sdcard/Android/obb
You can store that info on an external SD, using directory bind, you can find it on here, very good app if your phone/tablet sucks because its internal storage is 3.75gb. my dual partitioned and mounted 64gb sdcard works wonderfully, my games get 16gb to themselves.
Anyway to stay on topic, I want this, but also looking at an Asus, and a Samsung galaxy tab 2

CM 10.1 JB - thanks thegreatergood

First of all, TWRP can only be used after unlocking boot loader and unlocking wipes all data
I also unlocked boot loader after 2 months when I have many apps, so it is simple you copy all the data to your PC and you can do a backup of your apk's by sending them to a Bluetooth device by the help of a app ( Bluetooth file transfer) , you unlock the boot loader and send all apks back either by Bluetooth or by using stick mount when you are rooted , and restore all data,
Flashing a kernel requires to root first
You can either root by using root toolkit or by using adb fastboot method manually
Here is the link to a post of mine for rooting nexus 7 by adb fast boot method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38195329
Good luck,if you are unable to root or having any problem, reply and I will look into it

flash kernel and root are two different things.
after unlocking the boot loader, you can flash anything you want, including an already rooted system image.
