Since I had to sift through a lot of cruft to find a root method that worked for the fascinate, i figured I should save others the trouble and test out the popular "universal" rooting options on ED05 Froyo and EH03 Gingerbread. None of the methods did any permanent damage to the test phone.
Root tool : Link : ED05 result : EH03 result
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SuperOneClick (ZergRush GUI) : here : Installed Busybox but did not give root : Crashed
GingerBreak : here : hung : hung
VISIONary : here : crashed and temporarily broke Play/Market : crashed
So, as you can see, Droidstyle's guide is the only working method I could find to root ED05 and EH03. Bravo, Droidstyle!
Most of those probably use the rageagainstthecage exploit. Which was patched a while ago and doesn't work for most stuff anymore. Easiest way to root is Odin clockworkmod and flash an SU zip.

Yup, I recently tried rooting my stock EH03 and found that the only way that worked are the instructions on droidstyle's guide (Odin CWM and flash su.zip from the microsd).
I fought with my phone for a couple hours yesterday to get it rooted. Finally got it rooted on froyo but i had to switch the download source of where i was getting the stock froyo from. Then it worked great.
(SuperOneClick)
I tries Gingerbreak in the past and all it did is hang....

Hey, I just rooted my vibrant with Superoneclick and backed it up with Titanium. Then I downloaded ROM Manager and clicked flash clockwork mod recovery and then clicked reboot into recovery. But I get the blue text even after clicking reinstall packages two times. Could someone please help me I'm new at this.
I think 2.2 has a locked bootloader. Use ODIN to go back to stock 2.1 and then root and use CWM recovery. After that you can flash whatever you like.
Use this guide here and you will be alright.
Doesn't have a locked bootloader. Make sure update.zip got put on your sdcard in the root directory.
If not you can use the one I've linked.

You can just use Odin to flash a voodoo kernel. Did the same on my girlfriends phone this weekend and that solved.

Followed the guide and worked like a charm!! Thanx for the other options too

Having two different issues with my phone.
SBF'd with .596. Rooted with Z4, using Droid2 bootstrap.
For one: I can't reboot into bootstrap through the app. I have to use the old fashion way.
For two: Any time I try to install any update zip files, I get an exception error. Doesn't matter what type of update it is.
Specifically, I've been trying to flash a wugfresh wireless tether update so I can use it on the stock .596, but no dice.
What could be wrong, and what could I do to remedy?
Your problem may be that Z4root can't root Gingerbread.

These are the steps I followed essentially.

SBF to Froyo. Root with Z4. Install D2 bootstrap. Flash two-part blur zip files. Done.
I used Z4 to root froyo, and install GB over it. Not to root GB
I'm used to Samsung Rooting/Flashingm but i'm new to MOTO.
i read the beginners guide, and i'm still unclear as to the exact procedure to flashing a ROM.
I'm trying to Root and Flash MSGinger 2.1 to a TMO Defy with a Red Lens. It's currently unrooted/stock, running 2.2.1.
I'm just unsure about if/when i need to use RSDlite to flash an SBF.
if someone could just give me a numbered sequence as to the exact steps, i'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

So just to make sure....
From stock 2.2.1
1. flash the fixed sbf....reboot
2. Root using superoneclick
3. Reboot and install 2ndinit
4. Reboot into recovery
5. Install with cwm using advanced restore method
That right?
Thanks again!

When all other methods (for some unknown reason) failed to reroot my flipside after sbf reflashing stock froyo, I had given up. Came across this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582 on my atrix forum. All credit to DoomLord and his one click root package. All rooted again, now ill be ready to check out an English recovery if ever one is found.
I have only tested this on the Vibrant and Captivate but should work well enough with other Galaxy S1 models.
This is a little something I picked up on when I had to odin my phone and did not feel like messing with toolkits or ADB or Rom manager or anything of that sorts.
This is a short step by step guide how to painlessly get from Stock JFD (eclair 2.1) after an Odin to CM 7.1 and then CM 10.0
This guide assumes you have the appropriate drivers installed your PC if not here is a link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Step 1:
- If you havent already, Odin your phone to stock JFD firmware
Instructions for that and all the necessary files may be found here: Link http://tinyurl.com/boo3bz4
Step 2:
- Download Cyanogen Mod 7.1 from their official site, after it is downloaded rename it to "update" and place it on to the root of your internal SD card, and then power down the phone.
Step 3:
- With the phone powered off hold volume UP and DOWN as you power on the phone to enter the stock recovery. There you will select Re-install Packages, and from there watch it magically go from Stock with no Root to CM 7.1 / Custom Recovery with out any problems.
Step 4: Proceed to flash CM 10 as you normally would from recovery:
There you have it, from Eclair to Jellybean in 4 easy steps. From all my time flashing this phone and coincidentally only this phone for the last 3 years this is the easiest way I found to get to Custom Recovery, Root, and Custom Rom on the Vibrant. Made me want to type this up because I was trying to flash from a Froyo rom with the Red Recovery and kept getting a getprop error get many roms until one rom finally bricked my phone and I had to Odin.
Hope this helps.
You realize there has been an update.zip method since almost the beginning of this phone right?

yes, but I just figured it was always for just Root, because it has never been mentioned that the update method could be used to just directly flash a Rom.
